Chapter 37: Magic Touch
**This chapter is dedicated to Raavika and Garth, my new reviewy-peeps! (And yes, it’s named after an Aerosmith song…*hides*)
Late into the night, Zim stirred, having dozed off while working on his pak. It would only take a few more hours of work to finish, but he was absolutely exhausted. Standing and stretching, Zim sighed, walking out of the lab and down the hall. He paused in the doorway of his chamber, then turned and poked his head into the Dib’s room. The human was sound asleep, his breathing a little laboured due to the beating he’d taken from Zim earlier. In truth, Zim had been amazed by the human’s determination. That type of loyalty was hard to come by.
Zim approached Dib’s bed, sitting down on the edge and watching him sleep for a few minutes before reaching out and brushing the hair back off of his face, tracing his fingertips over the dark bruise on Dib’s cheek.
Yes…definitely hard to come by. He had to admire the human’s tenacity. Dib may turn out to be more useful than he’d originally thought.
Pulling the covers down, he inspected the damage he’d done to the human’s lean frame with almost sadistic fascination. He traced the dark bruises in the small of Dib’s back and on his ribs and stomach, pulling his hand back when Dib stirred, groaning softly.
Dib stirred groggily, blinking up at Zim and then rubbing his eyes. “Zim…?” He sat up a little, grabbing his glasses and putting them on, blinking at the Invader in the dim light. “What’s up?”
Zim smirked. “Nothing’s up, human.”
Dib blinked at him, then coughed, grimacing as the sharp motion hurt his bruised ribs. “Then…um…why are you here?”
Zim reached out and probed one of the bruises, grinning when Dib flinched. “I’m assessing the amount of damage I’ve done.”
“Oh.” Dib sat up a bit more, grimacing. “I think you may have dislocated my shoulder.” He felt for the familiar injury, an old one from a rough game of bludgeon ball back in skool gym class. Grimacing a little, he nodded. “Yeah. I thought you were gonna break my arm.”
“I considered it. I wasn’t sure how much you could take before you confessed.”
Dib snorted. “Well now you know: it’ll take more than any human can dish out.” He stood up and moved past Zim, leaning against the wall for a second.
Zim quirked his antennae. “What are you doing?”
Dib took a deep breath and then stepped away from the wall, ramming his shoulder against it hard, uttering a pained growl and sliding down the wall to the floor, sitting with his back against it. “Fu-uuuck…” he groaned, holding his shoulder, massaging the muscles, his eyes clenched closed.
Zim approached warily, unnerved by the human’s odd behaviour. “What did you just do?”
Dib looked up at Zim, then shrugged, wincing a little. “Popped my shoulder back in place. Hurts like a motherfucker, but hey, what’re you gonna do, right? I can’t leave it out of the joint.” He uttered a strained laugh.
Zim blinked at him. “I pulled the bone out?”
Dib nodded. “Yeah, back at the station when you yanked my arm up behind my back. How I fell asleep on it like that is beyond me.” He grimaced a little, then stood, still holding the injury. “I’m fine.”
Zim grinned. “You are quite resilient, for a human.”
“I guess I’ll take that as a compliment.” Dib chuckled, his glasses sliding down his nose a little. He took them off and set them back down on the bedside table again, sitting down beside Zim on the edge of the bed. “So, how’s the pak coming?”
The Invader stretched, then shrugged. “I’ll finish it in the morning. I’m weary.”
Dib nodded, running a hand through his hair. “Same here.” He looked over at Zim, quirking a brow. “Do you have anything really cold I could put on my shoulder?”
“Why?”
“Helps the swelling. Otherwise it’s going to slow me down tomorrow.”
Zim’s eyes narrowed a little, his antennae perking forward, then back again.
Dib blinked at him, not quite sure what that look meant. “What?”
Zim nodded. “Lie down.”
Dib lay down on his good side, looking up at Zim questioningly. The Irken stood and left the room, returning a few minutes later with a small jar, which he opened and set down on the table. There was an odd reddish substance inside, which Zim scooped up on his fingers.
“I don’t know if this will work on a human, but Invaders carry it for pain relief.” He touched his fingers to Dib’s shoulder, rubbing the substance into the skin. It had a spicy-sweet smell, almost like cinnamon.
Dib sighed in relief as the area started to numb, then frowned in confusion. “Um…not that I mind…but…why are you doing this for me?”
Zim paused, blinking at him. “I don’t know.” He closed the jar tightly, then sat back, lying on his side next to Dib, watching him with vague interest. “Perhaps I’m experimenting on you. Besides, if you are to wage war on this planet with me, then it would make sense to have you familiar with the superior techniques of the Irken Invaders.” His eyes narrowed slightly. “Not ALL of them, of course…I will only show you a few. I’m afraid that those types of privileges are reserved for the members of the Irken elite.”
Dib nodded quietly, rolling onto his back and looking up at Zim, who was leaning on one elbow, his chin resting in his hand as he looked down at Dib.
“That stuff helped. Thanks.”
Zim nodded, then yawned, his antennae flattening against his skull as he did so, then sticking up again.
Dib reached up and ran his fingers gently along one of Zim’s antennae, smiling when the Irken purred softly. “Is it still sore?”
Zim’s antennae twitched. “Hmm? Oh, my antenna? No. I think it’s healed fully.”
Dib continued to stroke Zim’s antennae, smiling when Zim eventually lay down beside him and rested his head on Dib’s chest so he could reach them a little easier.
“So, what are you going to do once you’ve conquered Earth?” Dib smiled, his eyes drifting closed as he listened to the Irken’s low, steady purring.
Zim opened his eyes, wrapping an arm around Dib’s waist as the human stroked his sensitive antennae. “I hadn’t thought of it. I’m not quite sure.”
“What will the Tallest say?”
Zim scowled. “I…don’t want to think of that right now.”
Dib nodded. “Sorry.”
Zim shrugged, closing his eyes again, sighing and purring again as Dib stroked his antennae.
Dib chuckled. “You like it when I do this, huh?”
Zim nodded, sighing in contentment. “It’s quite relaxing. I enjoy it, yes…”
“So do I.” Dib ran his fingers along one, straight down to the tip, then twirled it gently around his finger, continuing to play with the delicate antennae until he dozed off again.
