Disclaimer: I do not own Gargoyles/Disney related but the original character, Eve Anderson, is from my own mind and is not a character of Disney. I get no pay and am only doing this for fun |
Eve feels disappointed that he did not stay for the whole meal. Although it felt good to sing and know she would be getting a meal out of it, she really only wanted to sing for him alone. The girls teased her unmercifully for the rest of the day, making sure the clothes she brought home were the sexiest they could find and still be worn at work.
While they finish their shopping, Owen peers through the rear view mirror and watches the same jogger pass by for the 7th time. The hairs stand up on the back of his neck and he knows for certain now that they are being watched. He quickly dials Elise’s number, eyeing the jogger as he turns the corner at the stop light. “We might have a problem.” He glances around and notices another man he has seen before in the last hour watching the store front from across the street. “What sort of problem?” Elise whispers softly into the phone, letting him know the other two girls are close by. “Two unidentified males scoping out the store.” He glances in his mirror and sees the jogger return. “Since I am not sure if they are FBI or not, I would suggest you leave soon and let me take you back to the castle.” “Understood. We are on our way.” He can hear her call Fox’s name. “Who am I watching for?” “Jogger in red shirt and shorts just outside main doors and business man across the street in tan suit.” His eyes flicker between the two men and he starts the car. “I’ll leave the moment everyone is inside.” “Gotcha.” She hangs up the phone. It’s only moments later before he sees Elise hustling everyone outside, her eyes picking out both men immediately. Eve glances in the jogger’s direction and freezes for a moment. He sees her eyes widen as she lunges for the car. She grabs Fox’s arm and hauls her roughly inside. “Why the hell are the FBI following us?” She growls out as Owen quickly loses them in the afternoon traffic. “You knew one of them?” Elise relaxes against the seat. “Absolutely.” She kicks one of the shopping bags in frustration. “He tried to date me a couple of years ago. I said no.” Fox chuckles. “Well at least we know one of the men following us. I’ll make arrangements for you to stay at the castle longer until we know everything is safe.” “No.” Eve glares at her, anger starting to well up in her. “No?” Fox stares at her in shock. “If the FBI is following us, then there is a definite threat to our safety.” “I am quite capable of taking care of myself.” Her back straightens and the anger starts to well over. “I will not be coddled like a child and locked up for my own good. If you want to put up wards and security cameras at my apartment, then so be it but I will not hide away til this blows over.” Fox looks up to see Owen glaring angrily back at them through the mirror. “As you wish. At least promise me you will stay til after dinner so that we can have time to set everything in place.” “Til after dinner and no longer.” She turns and stares out the window, feeling as if she is now being pushed towards a gilded cage. Eve paces the solarium, her anger still bubbling near the surface. She had already chased off all the gargoyles except Goliath with her fuming and now he watches her quietly from a perch near one of the outer most windows as she tries to wear a groove into the stone path she is walking. She kicks a stone, knowing they are taking longer than necessary to get her apartment set up for her. She growls softly, kicking the stone again, and nearly screams when Goliath chuckles at her. “I believe the stone is quite unaware of what it has done to make you so angry.” He glances out the window at the street below. “Perhaps you should sit down and let the stone have a chance to recover.” “Perhaps I should leave now and take my chances.” She growls back, kicking a larger stone. “I wouldn’t.” He taps his ear, showing her an earpiece. “Besides, I think that would only make Owen angrier when he gets here to take you home. Elise says they have arrived.” “What if I don’t want him to take me home?” Her hands clench, feeling her anger rise. “I don’t need a bodyguard!” “Pity.” Owen narrows his eyes at her as he walks through the trees. “I had thought you would rather I take you home and show you the security system instead of Fox. No matter. I will just have Alexander transport you there instead. You can figure it out yourself.” ‘Whatever.” She growls back, knowing she shouldn’t be angry at him but not able to help it. “It’s not like I’m so stupid I can’t figure it out.” He glowers and snaps his fingers, Alexander magically appearing next to him. “Take Miss Anderson home and activate the wards on your way out.” “But what about in the morning?” Xander stares at them both in confusion. “She’s a big girl. Let her figure it out.” He turns on his heel and stalks away. Eve sighs, scrubbing at her face as Goliath glides down to them. “That was not a very good idea to anger him, Eve.” Goliath stares after Owen. “Things have a way of going very wrong when he’s angry.” “Maybe it was but it’s done now.” She sighs again and turns to Xander. “I’m tired and I want to go home.” Xander nods and snaps his fingers, transporting them away. The next few days go by in a blur. Every morning she wakes feeling less rested than the night before from waking at every sound throughout the night. She follows the bodyguard at her door to his car and lets him whisk her away to her job every morning. She tries her best to catch Owen to apologize but he’s always in meetings or busy on the phone. By Thurs she’s ready to call in sick just so she can let her emotions take over for a while instead of smile warmly at people she’d rather scream at. She stands in the quiet break room, eyes closed and her back to the wall, and tries to calm herself after yet another meeting with a supervisor who thinks he can bribe her out of firing him. She doesn’t even realize she’s no longer alone until a gentle hand cups her face and soft lips press against hers. Owen’s scent overwhelms her and she kisses him back hungrily. He presses his body against hers and growls in her ear. “Stop stalking my office or I’ll be forced to bend you over my desk and spank you.” She laughs softly, tears threatening to spill over in her eyes. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to get angry with you.” He wipes her tears away, kissing her cheeks where they had touched. “Shh. None of that. I am overprotective and you are not used to it.” He pulls her away from the wall and wraps his arms around her. “I have thrust you into a more dangerous world now and I cannot always protect you. I should be the one asking for forgiveness.” She leans into him, her nerves slowly calming. “I thought you didn’t want to see me after I snapped at you.” She feels him tense for a moment. “This whole situation is spiraling out of control. I have been in meetings with investors, FBI, and more every waking moment. David is going to try to send us away into hiding for a while until it blows over.” “What?” She feels her anger rise again as she looks up. He kisses her softly again, calming her down. “Peace, Kitten. I believe it is more for us to de-stress than it is for our protection. Things have a tendency to break when I get angry or too stressed. It always gets expensive.” His lips twitch up. “I’ll remember that.” She chuckles and finally steps away from him. “You know security is seeing us like this.” “Let the rumors fly.” He leans close and gives her one last kiss. “They already have you pregnant, having several affairs on me, and trying to takes me for millions. I, on the other hand, am supposedly only using you for sex while I have paid call girls on the side.” “Sex sounds good!” She grins. “Not yet, Kitten.” He winks at her. “As I said before, we need to take this slow.” She laughs and heads for the door. “We’ll see how long that lasts.” Eve is nearly done for the day when Fox calls her into her office. She can feel her nerves tingling as she walks down the hall, knowing something is wrong. She knocks softly at the door and then steps in, looking around. An older woman who looks amazingly similar to Fox stands, eyeing her curiously. “Is there something I can help you with, Mrs. Xanatos?” Eve tries not to stare at the older woman but the way the woman eyes her unnerves her. “Eve, I would like you to meet my mother, Anastasia Renard. We were just talking about everything that has been happening and she was quite curious about your ability to see magic.“ Fox waves her to a seat. “I thought it would be better for you to explain it.” Eve takes Ms. Renard’s hand and feels a slight jolt of power as she shakes it. “Pleased to meet you, Ms. Renard.” Anastasia smiles and settles back into her chair. “I am sure the pleasure is all mine, My Dear.” “What is it you would like to know?” Eve eyes her warily as she sits down across from her. “I find it interesting that you can see magic but cannot manipulate it. How is that possible?” She lifts a brow, daring Eve to lie. Eve sighs heavily. “I honestly have no idea. My father and his father before him could use magic. I ended up with the short end of the stick, I guess. “ She quickly glances over the other woman, noting several layers of magic sliding over her body. “I can see you have a spell on you to change your appearance. I assume it is to make you look younger and hide any flaws as makeup would usually do.” Anastasia’s eyes narrow slightly. “I see. Could I ask how this magic appears to you?” Eve glances at Fox, suddenly feeling as if a noose is sliding down over her neck. “It looks like a slight sheen over you. I can’t tell what it is doing exactly, only that it is there.” “Ah!” Her lips twitch up slightly and she looks over at her daughter. “She has a very unique gift, don’t you think?” “Yes, she does but I have not had a use for that talent so far. It is Eve’s gift for seeing things that I would not normally see that I use the most.” Fox winks at her. “I’ve been saved from lawsuits and thefts more since she has been my assistant than years past. That is why I hate to ask this but where do you want to go for a few weeks while things calm down here?” “Home.” Eve blurts out before thinking. “I mean the ranch, not my apartment.” Fox smiles. “I thought that would be your answer. The foals should be hitting the ground soon anyway, right?” “You have a horse ranch?” Anastasia grows more interested. “The ranch is only part of it.” Eve shrugs, trying not to sound boastful. “It’s mostly a reserve my grandfather made to keep nature as it is.” “Interesting.” Anastasia taps her lip in thought. “And is anyone allowed on this reserve?” “No way!” Eve chuckles and then catches herself, blushing slightly. “Sorry, the thought is ridiculous to me. Grandfather put up wards to keep anyone with bad intent out and only allow those with permission to enter.” “So you’ll be safe there?” Fox leans forward, hoping this will be her answer to her dilemma. “I should be.” Eve shrugs again, not liking the idea of being separated from Owen. “Good. It’s settled then. I will arrange transport there for you tomorrow.” Fox reaches for the phone. “I can’t leave til after the banquet.” Eve stops her before she can dial. “Alexander has worked hard and is counting on me to make sure this event goes smoothly. I’m not going to let this cause me to back out now when he needs me.” The door opens behind them and Owen steps inside, coming to a sudden halt when she sees Anastasia. Fox waves him over, confusion on her face. “If that is how you feel about it, we’ll plan it for Sunday then.” Eve sighs in relief. “Thank you.” “I have one last task for you, My Dear.” Anastasia takes Owen’s stone hand in hers and eyes it critically. “If you can see spells, can you see how they were made?” She glances at Owen, seeing confusion on his face as well. “No, but father always said there is a weakness in every spell. If you can find it, you can break it.” “Can you see one here?” She thrusts his hand towards Eve. Confused even more, Eve glances back up at him. When he gives no indication to stop, she looks down at his hand. She sees layers of fine lines running all over it but one looks weakened. She points to it. “Here.” Anastasia glances up at her and then follows the line of where her finger is pointing. “This one right here?” When Eve nods yes, she quickly grabs the line in her fingers and pulls. “And this should break it?” The line snaps and disappears. Owen cries out in pain and doubles over his hand. Eve lunges from the chair, holding him as he crumples to the floor. “What have you done?” She growls at the older woman. “The pain is only momentary. If you are right, the hand will be restored.” Eve gently strokes the hair from his eyes. “And if I’m not?” “Then we shall see.” Anastasia grins down at her. “Mother that was uncalled for.” Fox stands, watching Owen closely for any sign. “You didn’t even give him a choice in the matter.” “Do not test me, Daughter.” She warns back. “He is mine, not yours. It is my decision to test the woman he wishes to keep.” Eve blocks out all of this as Owen begins to stir against her. He groans as he lifts his head weakly against her. “I’m sorry. Are you alright?” “Don’t be.” He slowly sits up and flexes his now restored hand. “I should’ve known she had something like this in mind.” He glances behind him and sees Anastasia watching him intently. “I believe they are done with you now. It is time for you to go home.” “But..” She glances at Fox and sees her shift her eyes to her mother. “Go Home, Miss Anderson.” Owen heaves himself to his feet, looking away from her as he turns his back to her. Eve frowns as she slowly stand, her confusion growing. “Very well.” She brushes at her skirt and then nods to Fox. “I will see you tomorrow morning, Mrs. Xanatos. It was a pleasure to meet you, Ms. Renard.” She turns on her heel and quickly leaves the room. Anastasia grins. “Your human has spirit, Brother.” “Was this necessary, Sister Dear?” He growls back at her, his anger rising. “If you continue to choose to consort with her it is.” She stands and takes his hand again, checking it over. “My Lord husband is quite concerned with your recent behavior. I had to be sure she would not be a danger to you.” He jerks his hand from hers. “That is not your decision. You left me here to survive as a human. How I do it is my choice.” She stalks to the door, laughing. “I will be sure to let My Lord know you feel this way.” “Tell him what you like.” Owen growls back. “I no longer care.” She stops at the door, eyeing him carefully. “I think you do, Brother. However, at this moment, I think I shall keep the peace between you and my husband for now. “ Fox grabs his wrist, keeping him from throwing a large metal paper weight at her mother as she closes the door behind her. “Why did you stop me?” Fox takes the paper weight from him and sets it back down. “There are enough people hunting for your blood. Let’s keep the wild hunt out of it.” She settles back in her chair. “I need you to arrange for Eve’s departure on Sunday.” He sighs softly, closing his eyes. “Where is she going?” “Shouldn’t you be asking where the two of you are going?” She smiles warmly at his startled look. “I’m not separating the two of you. I do, however, want it to look as if you are going in two different directions so no one knows you are in the same place. “ “That means I will have to make it look as if I wish to be away from her.” He frowns at the prospect. “I know.” She leans back in her chair, steepling her fingers. “Do what you need to and ask for forgiveness after. “ He nods and quickly leaves to set the wheels in motion. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
