Chapter 34: Memory
“MASTERRRR!!! I GOTS THE CAN FOR YOOOOOU!!” GIR shouted as he ran into the lab.
Zim set his pak aside and got up from the table, a pleased grin on his face. “Excellent! I didn’t think you’d…” frowning, Zim looked around. “Where’s the Dib-unit?”
GIR pulled the data canister off of his back and went over to the TV, sitting down and turning on the Scary Monkey Show.
“GIR!”
“Yes?” The little robot blinked at him.
“Where is the Dib-unit?” Zim asked, agitated.
“Oh, he got taken away.”
Zim’s eyes widened in shock. “He WHAT? By who??”
GIR shrugged. “The bad guys.”
Zim blinked at him. “Where did they take him?”
GIR shrugged again, watching the TV.
Turning off the TV, Zim stood in front of him. “GIR, where did they take the Dib-unit?”
“I dunno.” He turned the TV on again, pouting when a news broadcast pre-empted the Scary Monkey Show.
SUSPECT APPREHENDED…
“One of the criminals behind the bombing of the Off-White House and the Octagon has been apprehended…Dib Membrane, son of the missing Professor Membrane, was caught stealing information from the Octagon earlier this evening, and has been taken to a nearby jail for questioning before he is moved to a maximum-security prison to await trial for acts of terrorism…”
Zim watched as footage of Dib being dragged to a cruiser played on the screen, although the human was trying to keep his head down as reporters swarmed and shoved microphones in his face. At one point, Dib looked directly into the camera.
“Long live the Empire.” Dib grinned maniacally and pulled against the cuffs, struggling as the guards tried to force him into the back of the vehicle.
The footage cut out, returning to the reporter. “As of yet it is unclear what Dib Membrane’s comments pertained to, but sources are saying that he has a long history of dementia…”
As the broadcast went on, Zim shook his head and returned to the table, working on his pak again.
GIR eventually got bored of the broadcast and left the room, wanting to play with his friend Mr. Pig.
“Stupid human…” Zim muttered. He had all the information he needed now to access Earth’s most powerful weapons. Soon he’d have the planet at his mercy. He grinned. Dib had served him well.
Suddenly GIR came running downstairs. “You gots a phoney call, Master!”
Zim blinked at him, then followed GIR up to the ground level, picking up the receiver. “Hello?”
“Hey.” Dib’s voice sounded weary. “This is my one phone call, so I figured…well…” He sighed.
Zim’s antennae twitched. “So you’re calling me.”
Dib chuckled bitterly. “Yeah. I’ve killed everyone else I could’ve called, anyway.”
“I see.”
“Look…” Dib swallowed hard, letting out a shaky sigh and then speaking softly. “I know better than to ask you to come and break me out of here. I just wanted to say thanks for giving me a chance…it meant a lot to me…and…”
There was a momentary silence on Dib’s end before he spoke again, although his voice had changed…it sounded like he was in pain. Zim frowned a little, confused.
“…and I want you to know that I’m…that I’m gonna miss you.” Another shaky breath. “And if I don’t see you again…I hope you blow this place to shit…and…”
Zim’s antennae twitched again when there was a choked sound on the other end. Dib must be doing that crying thing humans did sometimes.
“…please don’t forget me.” There was a loud click, and then a dial tone.
