Chapter 310
"What's gotten into you? Why are you so angry? You were happy earlier," Katara grumbled.
"Something's not right. The War Minister is here. I didn't clear Sokka being outside and I know Azula and Chu-hua didn't either. The twins don't have the authority," he replied lengthening his stride Katara began to jog beside him.
She raced outdoors ready to come to her brother's aid only to be pelted by a snowball.
Sokka laughed, "I was wondering when you were going to join us."
Katara scooped up a pile of snow and immediately joined the fray while Zuko went to stand at a safe distance next to a bystander, one of the scientists Katara had buried in the snow the day before. Pol barely glanced at the person who'd come to stand next to him. He continued to kneel in the snow drawing, cataloging Sokka's movements: the way he lifted the snow, packed it, and threw it; no little detail from how long range balls were thrown one way and short range balls were thrown another was missed.
He turned the page, made a few calculations and continued drawing. This time it was a machine and not a person. Zuko quickly began to get an idea of who'd authorized Sokka's outing. The loss at the North Pole was blemish upon the Fire Nation and Pol had lost several family members. The machine and calculations the older boy was making had to be for a weapon to avenge the loss. Pol looked up and once more began drawing humans.
He smiled as he moved onto his next subject. The Waterbender had a completely different throwing style than her brother. Both made very effective snowballs but the girl’s were far more painful. Pol continued studying her technique then began sketching first her hands and the way she lifted and shaped the snow. Then her arms as she threw. His eyes widened as she leaned back slightly and turned her entire torso to make up for the difference in her gender's lack physical of strength. Her brother didn't do that. He began adding the Waterbender's torso to his drawings. It was easy to see how her body was moving beneath her coats - unlike her brother she had breasts.
Zuko closed his eyes and clenched his teeth as Pol sketched Katara. If he wanted to help her, really help her, had to be patient. His hand clenched into fist as the older boy sketched the curve of her breasts then added lines to capture their movement. He closed his eyes once more and began his favorite set of breathing exercises. He opened them to find his reward. The breasts on the page were uncovered and Katara's joyous face was drawn above the torso.
"Nice picture."
"I think so," Pol replied without looking up. He couldn't ignore the hands sliding down his arms and fingers weaving between his as the Prince kneeled down behind him or the voice in his ear asking, "Are you lusting after my Katara?"
Pol screamed as fire raced down his arms, over his top of his hands, and ignited the sketchbook he was holding.
"I asked you a question, Maggot, are you lusting after my woman?" Zuko repeated as he stood.
"No Prince Zuko, I'm not!" he screamed desperately. "I was-"
Zuko's fist ended the sentence before the scientist had a chance to explain he was developing a weapon. He kept hitting over and over before grabbing the remains of the sketchbook and putting it in Pol's face "Then what the hell is this?"
"It's a-"
"Wrong answer" Zuko replied slamming his fist into his mouth and reigniting the book as Pol reached for it. This time the prince was sure to burn everything but Katara's bare-breasted image.
Zuko slid off of him but the boy continued to speak trying to explain what he was really doing. Zuko kicked him in the ribs hard enough to send him flying. Pol attempted to stand and Zuko was on him as soon as he did. Katara and the others ran forward screaming Zuko's name but he continued. Katara soon realized Chu-hua had been speaking the truth the morning after Zuko beat her. He had gone easy on her. She heard the crunch of bones with each heavy blow.
Zuko forced down bile and kept kitting. When Pol stopped moving Zuko wove his fingers between the other boy's and once more set fire to his hands. He grabbed his wrists and burned his forearms. For good measure he punched him in the head again. This time he felt the bone give way to soft tissue. Zuko stood and turned to Mao.
He grabbed the other scientist's arm and twisted until the bone snapped. He grabbed the boy's head and delivered two quick blows in rapid succession before leaning in where only Mao could hear him and showing him the drawing of Katara's face. His thumb covered her breasts, "I know what you and Pol were doing. Katara is my concubine. Mine. Any movement against her people is a movement against her and will be treated as an act of treason against me. I will kill your mother, I will kill your father, I will kill your older sister, I will kill your grandmother, your dog and your niece and nephews. I will leave you in the custody of the grandfather who's been fucking you in the ass since you were little."
"Didn't think I knew that did you? I also know about that serving girl at the Royal Academy. She was the illegitimate child of a noble and he's still very upset about what was done to her. Nod if you understand what I am saying."
Mao nodded and Zuko began speaking once more, "Now Mao, in addition to that sick bastard of a grandfather who else did I say I wouldn't kill?"
"My little sister," he whimpered.
"That's right, your little sister. Do you know what I'm going to do to her?"
Mao shook his head.
"I'm going to give her to that nobleman so he and his sons can do the same things to her that you and Pol did to his little girl. Do you understand me?"
He nodded and Zuko let go of him. He slammed his fist against the side of his face knocking him unconscious before grabbing Katara,'s arm "Let's go."
She pushed his hand away and he grabbed her face with his bloody hand, "This is not the time to fight with me Katara."
He flashed the piece of paper in his hand in front of her face before removing the other one from her face, "Let's go."
Katara's eyes widened and the shock was enough to let Zuko grab her arm and drag her past the people rushing outside inside into the building. He stopped one of them a woman, he tightened a warm fist around her arm, "Where are their rooms?"
"Whose rooms?" she asked in a panic.
"Mao and Pol."
She pointed, "That way, at the end of the third hall on the left. They're roommates."
Zuko forced Katara down the hallway and kicked open the door. Once they were inside he pushed her against the wall and showed her what he was hiding with the palm of his hand, "It's a weapon that throws snow. They were studying you and Sokka and planned to use your movements to build this."
Katara yelled, "What? Why would they?"
Zuko's hand clamped against her mouth, "Shut up and think. We lost at the North Pole against Waterbenders why do you think they were building a weapon that uses snow?"
He stepped closer pressing her further against the wall and whispered in her ear, "Where do you think they were going to test it? They damn sure weren't going back to a bustling city full of Waterbenders until they were sure it worked."
"I can think of a place that's very similar to the North Pole but far less protected. I only saw women and children when I visited," he whispered as he stepped away from her.
Katara slid down the wall as Zuko's words sank in. He had done what he did to protect Gran-Gran and the others. She lifted her head and softly called his name, "Zuko."
"This isn't the time, Katara. Help me search this room to be certain they didn't come back and make any drawings yesterday. They've already told Qin. He's the one who allowed your brother to go outside but if I know them they kept something back to reveal at a later time if their ideas began to slump," He muttered while rifling through the books on the desk.
"If they hid it it wouldn't be in the open," Katara replied rising and rushing to open a set of drawers.
"What in Koh's name is going on here?" Eiji screamed as he rushed into the room.
Zuko flashed the picture Pol had drawn of Katara. Zuko yelled, "I am well within my rights as a Prince to prevent perverts from touching themselves using an image of my concubine!"
"Those idiots," Eiji groaned as Zuko burned the picture.
Katara lifted the mattress farthest away and gasped. Zuko rushed to her side, "What is it are there more pictures of you?"
She shook her head and extended her arm towards Eiji. It was shaking as she gave Eiji the picture.
"Why are you giving me this?" he asked before looking down. The picture and his whole body burst into flame. He picked up the mattress and threw it across the room to see what was hidden beneath it. "Get out. Get out both of you."
Katara grabbed Zuko and pulled him to the hallway. Flames engulfed the room as Eiji extended his arms and opened his mouth. The heat was so intense that even Zuko had to go farther down the hall. He and Katara hugged the wall as the enraged father walked past them towards the infirmary; both of them noticed the stone melting beneath his feet.
Katara wrapped her arms around Zuko and trembled. Her teeth were still chattering when she was finally composed herself to whisper, "He'd drawn pictures of his children; of all the disgusting things he wanted to do to them even the infant."
"That was Mao's side of the room. The one I killed was Pol," Zuko whispered. "All he wanted to do was help his country."
Katara wrapped her arms around him and led him back to their room. The full weight of what Zuko had done was beginning to settle on him. He'd thrown up twice. His hands were shaking so bad Katara had to help him out of his bloody clothes. He lost his bowels once they were in the shower and cried as Katara bent the water and waste mixture around their feet. He continued to cry as Katara washed his body and shampooed his hair. The pain was too raw and sudden for her bending to soothe his mind like it did last time. All she could do was hold him as he whispered his guilt for killing someone trying to help his country even thought it meant he was protecting what was left of hers.
She began telling him stories about Gran-Gran, Aunt Yuki, Amnak and her other loved ones at home as she helped him out of the tub. She told him about the children she'd helped Gran-Gran deliver and their mothers. She finally got a response when she told him about the little boys he'd saved -Sokka's group of warriors in training. Their unanimous decision after seeing their fearless leader manhandled by the prince was "Sokka you suck! We wanna be strong like him when we grow up."
He laughed for a moment even with the tears streaming down his face and whispered, "I'm not strong. I'm weak."
"Yes Zuko, you are strong, what you did today displayed great strength. You prevented the creation of a weapon that would have been tested on the defenseless."
"But Katara I,"
"Zuko you saved the people of my tribe and your own country. The last time the Northern Water Tribe was caught off guard. They've become more aware of the possibility of an attack and have begun preparing for it. The ships carrying those machines would never get close enough to use them."
"But Katara -"
"But nothing Zuko, you saved my Gran-Gran and your soldiers who would have been decimated had your people chosen to attack the North Pole a second time. Chief Arnook lost his only child and his wife is unable to bear more children. Do you really think your people could waltz right in like they did last time after his only child made such a tremendous sacrifice? You nation is made of islands Zuko. If your people went back to the North Pole how many full moons do you think it would take before those islands began to disappear?" She asked firmly.
Zuko shook his head, "I killed another helpless person Katara after I swore not to."
Katara shifted so Zuko was laying more on her chest than her shoulder so she could face him, "They were roommates Zuko. Do you really think one made those disgusting drawings without the other knowing?"
"Katara-"
"No Zuko stop arguing and listen. I've been here before Zuko and know there are enough rooms for everyone to have their own. Even if that woman hadn't said it earlier I know there is more than enough space to go around. They chose to share. Why do you think they did that? Do you think that one would have continued to room with the other if they weren't the same type of monster?"
She caressed his cheek, "What if you hadn't done that and one of them had actually done those things to your little cousins?"
"I'd kill him," Zuko said without hesitation.
"Yes you would. And so would their mother, father, aunts, grandfather and any other reasonable adult. He met the same end without your cousins experiencing the pain."
Zuko nodded as his tears started to fall again, "But still I didn't have to burn him or hit him so much. I could have done it faster, been more merciful."
Katara pulled her arms tighter around him and held him as he cried. This time she had no argument. It took over an hour for him to cry himself to sleep and he woke every five minutes screaming. As she held him she could only think of one thing - the first time he'd killed for her he'd been alone. There had been no one to help him then.
