Hello world and my wonderful readers! I had a fabulous birthday weekend :). I dedicate this chapter to Phillip Seymour Hoffman, whose death has affected me tremendously. Not only was he one of my idols, but he was also on my list of thespians I wanted to work with. Such a tragic loss of such an extraordinary talent. :(
Sorry if it seems like I'm dragging the story out, I keep coming up with new ideas and the fans don't want it to end just yet. Sadly, all good things must come to an end, there's really only one or two more chapters left and an epilogue.
Another thing, sorry if it seems like the chapters are similar, I kind of did it on purpose to show that Duncan and Courtney have some of the same mannerisms. !
Also, I would love some more original Fanart, please contact me! Thank you SySaiyan for your two gorgeous pieces!
I finally hit over 200 reviews! WOO-HOO! Now, I really want to hit 300 and more reviews! I've been advertising the story on Instagram, I hope it works! I did not draw the cover image, I found that on Instagram also!

Chapter Thirty: Squaring Things in The Cards, Part Two
Later that day, The Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, 4:50 pm
Jose's grey Maserati Spyder pulled up in front of Culina at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, with a quiet yet nervous Heather in the front seat. Ever since her overdose, she had been attending Narcotics Anonymous meetings every day, and they seemed to be helping. Due to the face that the meetings were open discussion, she heard a lot of other people's stories, some worse than her own. Heather was a little uncomfortable at first to tell her story, but the environment really was unbiased, and when she finally did tell her story, she received nothing but warmth and support from the other members. She had was almost finished with the twelve steps and was on Steps Eight and Nine, making a list of all the people she harmed and making amends with them, respectively.
Mike had told Zoey that she was in the hospital, and Bridgette and Lindsay tried to see her when they got there with Geoff and Tyler. She was asleep but they had left her flowers and a teddy bear, and had a message from Courtney on her phone. Heather thanked Bridgette and Lindsay and texted Courtney that she was fine, but kept the contact limited to focus on her recovery. Last week, she received a message from Courtney telling her that there was going to be a mandatory meeting regarding the clubs. It had been a month since she had seen the other girls, but had heard about what happened at the club, the bust was all over the news. Heather was definitely surprised that Duncan had been undercover all along and had let go of wanting to be with him. After seeing how they interacted with one another in their interviews, she realized that Duncan and Courtney belonged together.
Jose looked over at her. "Ready?"
She heavily sighed, looking down at her lap. "I'm unsure and don't know how prepared I am for all of this."
Heather had undergone a physical metamorphosis as well as mentally, emotionally and spiritually. As a gesture to let go of the past, she cut her hair to just below her shoulder blades and began eating better, gaining ten pounds and was now at the perfect weight for her height. She looked lovely in a white button up shirt, black pants, and silver strappy sandals, but she was still uneasy. Would the girls listen and accept her apology? At one point, they had all been so close, she hoped they could build up to that again. Jose grabbed her hand, causing Heather to look into his green eyes.
"I know you're nervous, Heather, but you're going to be fine. Speak from the heart, they'll listen because they care about you. If they didn't, would Courtney have insisted you be taken to a hospital or would Bridgette and Lindsay have tried to visit you?"
She shook her head. "I guess not. You're right."
Even though she was having great progress with getting sober, Heather was feeling a strong attraction to Jose. He either attended meetings with her or would call or visit to check up on her. She still couldn't believe that a stranger would take time out of his life to help turn her own around. It proved that not everybody in this world was self-absorbed like she had once been. They had really gotten to know each other very well over the past month and were taking things slow, agreeing to take their relationship to the next level once she completed all twelve steps, and neither one of them could wait for it. He smiled and gripped her hand.
"I know. They'll be able to see that you've changed, and for the better. Believe in yourself, I believe in you, and they will also. They already do."
Heather nodded. Things weren't what they once were, she had changed, but she had also hurt a lot of people in the past that didn't deserve it. They did deserve apologies, and she would do whatever it took to prove to them that she was no longer that evil person. "Thank you. It's just difficult, but I know I'll be able to get my point across." She looked over at the radio. "I better go, I don't want to be late." Before she could turn to exit the car, Jose still held her hand.
"Heather, wait." She turned back to face. "I was wondering if-"
"Yes?" She looked at him inquisitively and watched as he ran a hand through his spiky hair. Is he nervous?
"I was wondering if I could take you out to dinner when I pick you up? You know, like a date?"
Jose thought that Heather was absolutely beautiful and very smart, her vulnerability showed such a genuine side that drew him to her. She was lost in her problems and just needed somebody to guide her down the right path, he was glad to be that person. For such a confident guy, he was a bit nervous asking her out due to the state of mind she was in, but she smiled widely at him.
"Of course! I'd love to."
He returned the smile, glad that she had accepted his date, and she was also happy that he had asked her.
"Great. I'll pick you up in an hour and a half and we can go wherever you want."
"Sounds good." Even if the meeting didn't go how she wanted, at least Heather had the date to look forward to.
"Good luck, and remember, you can do it." Jose gave her a quick peck and they both blushed. Heather was feeling giddy over all of this as she stepped out of the car, it was the first time in probably ever that she wanted to jump up and down cheering.
"I'll see you later." She closed the car door.
"Bye, Heather. Can't wait." He smiled at her and drove off. Heather took a deep breath and walked into the restaurant.
Culina Patio, 5:00 pm
Courtney sat down at the head of the long table. She had decided that since it was a beautiful and warm Californian night that they should sit outside. The patio was surrounded with palm trees and bushes behind brick and marble paneling islands, as well as chrome outdoor heaters spaced out perfectly between the green and white tables linoleum tables and green and black chairs. There were a good amount of people on the patio as well, but things were quite peaceful.
After the bust, most of the other girls took offers from The Body Shop and Spearmint Rhino. Courtney, Bridgette, Zoey, Lindsay, Dakota, Heather, Leshawna, Katie, and Sadie were the only ones left, as were Izzy, Jo, and Eva. Jo and Eva were unable to make the meeting, but everybody else was in attendance, they were just waiting on Heather.
"Courtney, can we start already?" Katie asked.
"Yeah, or at least order? I'm hungry after that three hour power workout." Sadie whined.
"I don't want to do anything until we're all together. I think I see Heather now." The girls turned around to watch Heather walk out on the patio and were shocked with how fabulous she looked. Courtney walked over to greet her. "Hi, Heather. How is everything?" She had never seen Heather so timid before, but perhaps this was a good thing.
"I'm a lot better, actually, but do you mind if I say some things before the meeting starts? It's imperative to Step Nine of the twelve steps."
Courtney nodded and smiled warmly. "Absolutely, the floor is yours. I'm really glad to see that you're doing so well." She hugged her, which surprised Heather, who hesitated at first, but hugged back. Heather knew she had misjudged her, that she was just jealous of Courtney because of her own insecurities. They walked over and sat down, Heather started feeling a little self conscious by all the stares, but figured it was only natural and that they were curious.
"Ok, girls. Before we start, Heather has some things she'd like to say. Take it away, Heather. Whenever you're ready."
The girls were still staring at Heather, which made her more anxious. What if they get mad at me? They should be, I was awful to them! She took a deep yet shaky breath before speaking.
"I'm sure you all know about my cocaine overdose the night of the bust. I had hit rock bottom and was intentionally trying to kill myself because I had transformed into such an ugly and cruel person who put herself before others. If it weren't for Courtney's insistence that I be brought to the emergency room, my suicide attempt would have been successful. Thank you, Courtney, you rescued me. I am lucky that I survived, and view it as a fate providing me with a second chance to turn my life around to how I want it to be. Once I was released from the hospital, I enrolled in a twelve step therapy program and am making immense progress, being on Steps Eight and Nine. Step Eight is making a list of all the people that I harmed and making amends with them."
She gulped, dreading what the reactions would be to her apology. "I know my actions over the past couple of years have been deplorable and that I have hurt all of you in one way or another. It was never deliberate, I was so unhappy and miserable with my own life that I succumbed to the drugs and let it take over who I was, and I was too far into my addiction to stop on my own. I took out my pain on others, which is why you all turned against me, and I understand. Another thing I understand is the fact that I don't expect any of you to forgive me, and in all honesty, I don't think I'd forgive me if I were you, either. All I can say is that I am truly sorry for all the terrible things I have done and said. Even if you don't accept my apology, I do hope you can see that my words are coming from a place of honesty and remorse."
Heather heavily sighed, her eyes had actually filled with tears as she watched the other girls look at her, and awaited the scornful comments. Except they never came. All she could see on their faces were looks of sympathy and compassion.
"Heather, we know that wasn't who you really were when you were on the drugs." Dakota piped up.
"Exactly, we tried to help you, but maybe our efforts were too minute and we didn't see how deep the addiction was. We probably should have delved into it more instead of writing it off that you could kick the habit on your own." Zoey said.
"This whole group used to be so close, and when you were on coke, you were a monster, a pure Tasmanian Devil, girl. Whenever we tried to approach you, you'd push us away and tell us to butt out, which we did and now we regret it." Leshawna added.
"You may have been a spiteful and conniving bitch, but we knew that eventually you'd come around. Honestly, maybe we should be the ones apologizing since we did you a horrible injustice as your friends by not trying hard enough to get you help." Bridgette said.
"What?" Heather blinked and shook her head, confused. Why are they the ones apologizing?
"Yeah, Heather. We just stopped because you told us to, but we should have ignored your words and had an intervention." Lindsay proclaim, surprisingly insightful.
"Totally! Like on TV! I remember one time my uncle had one because he couldn't stop masterbating while watching cartoons! It was so funny but also sad!" Izzy broadcast, causing a silence that came to an end when all the girls busted up laughing. It had been such a long time since they had laughed together or even hung out as a group with Heather included. Things were starting to feel like the good days.
After the laughter stopped, Courtney spoke up. "I think Heather is very sincere with her apology, and I know that I forgive her. It takes a lot of courage to admit when you're wrong and try to make amends after exhibiting transgressions and attempt to mend the broken relationships in the process." Heather looked at her, awe-struck. She forgives me? Even after what I did to Duncan? Courtney really does have a pure heart of gold, and to think I tried to bring her down. I hope to be a good person like her someday, I know I'm already on my way there.
"I agree with Courtney!" Sadie spoke up.
"Absolutely. We were hoping you'd come around eventually, Heather. It's sad that you almost died and we're so grateful that you didn't, because you're an important part of this family as well. I can see already that you've changed and not the person you used to be. Who else agrees?" Katie asked. All the girls started nodding and concurred with her.
Heather was in complete amazement that they had forgiven her, but that only meant that she had true friends all along. "Thank you so much." She blinked and let the tears fall, except for the first time in probably her whole life, they were tears of happiness.
"Cheers to the New Heather!" Lindsay shouted. The girls all started clapping and one by one, got up and hugged Heather, who was crying and laughing with joy. The amount of absolution and love that surrounded her was overwhelming and lifting her spirits to the high heavens.
"We're really proud of you, Heather." Dakota said as everybody sat down and Heather wiped her tears away.
"Thank you again, I can't even express how overjoyed I'm feeling right now, and I'm really proud of myself for getting this far. There's one more thing though." They all looked over inquisitively. Heather wasn't sure if she should break the news or not, but she was so happy she wanted to share everything. "I kind of started seeing somebody."
"Ooo!" The girls all excitedly chattering and asking questions.
"Who is he?"
"What's he like?"
"Where'd you two meet?"
"Details, details!"
Heather laughed at their enthusiasm and finally felt like she was part of the group again. "Ok, ok. His name is Jose Burromuerto, he's a doctor at Northridge hospital. He's the one that treated me that night and got me into the program I'm in. We're taking things slowly, but he's a very wonderful and kind man, I couldn't have done this without his support. Even though it's early, I think I can definitely see it going somewhere."
Lindsay squealed and clapped her hands. "How romantic! Tell us more!"
"I will later, I promise. I've talked long enough, it's Courtney's turn. After all, she is the one that called the meeting." The two of them smiled at each other. Before Courtney started, the waitress walked up and took their order, Courtney whispering something in her ear before she left.
"Thanks, Heather. Well, we're here today to discuss the fate of The Tainted Kitty and The Smoking Gun."
As predicted, Blainely did try to go after everything Chris left to Courtney. Like DJ said, there was nothing she could do since the deeds were now in Courtney's name, but she decided to compromise: She let Blainely keep the house and the car, under the condition that she get off her ass and get a job in order to be a better provider for their son. Even though Chris claimed that he wasn't the father, Timmy still deserved to be well taken care of. There was still a chance for him, which is why Courtney decided to put the money that Chris left her in a trust fund for when Timmy turned eighteen, and made sure that Blainely wouldn't be able to touch it. Courtney kept the clubs and Chris' Rolex, the latter she had purposely refrained from telling Duncan, not wanting to cause any jealousy. The watch was now in her hope chest, as a memento of their six years together, both romantically and platonically.
"After much deliberation, I have decided to close the clubs and open a dance studio. It was always a dream of mine to open a dance studio, and now it's being fulfilled. I have a fantastic location secured in Encino and renovations have already begun. Except, I wouldn't feel right about leaving you girls out of a job. More or less, we've been together for almost five years, we're a family and will always be one. I also know that each of you have previous dance experience prior to The Tainted Kitty, which is why I've decided to bring you all in as dance instructors."
The table was silent for a moment, but the girls started cheering. Courtney exhaled, relieved that they embraced her decision.
"This is fabulous! I love it!" Dakota squealed.
"Yeah! So much better than working at a strip club, it's a real job!" Katie stated.
"No more sweaty pervs to grind up against." Sadie said, which made the girls laugh.
"Absolutely. We'll delve more into salaries and hours and such once the studio opens in a couple months, but you won't have to worry about making money. George Clooney has approached Duncan to make a movie about the whole operation, and I'm pretty sure they finally settled on a deal. They're having a meeting tonight with John Goodman to discuss pre-production, Duncan's playing a big part in this. Long story short, we're bringing you in as consultants, and you'll be receiving a consultant's fee of $25,000, which will certainly hold you guys over until the studio opens."
Their mouths instantly went agape at the news, but again, they started cheering. Courtney laughed as she noticed the other patrons were watching.
"Sully from Monster's Inc. wants to make a movie about all this? No way!" Lindsay said.
"Linds, come on! He's not just Sully, he's also Pacha from The Emperor's New Groove." Katie added.
"Oh yeah!"
Courtney rolled her eyes. "That's not all he's known for, but that's besides the point. Didn't you hear me say "George Clooney". Ocean's Eleven, Twelve, and Thirteen George Clooney. Sexiest Man Alive George Clooney?"
"GEORGE CLOONEY!" The entire table started squealing and cheering over the news that they were going to meet George Clooney. The waitress walked over to Courtney.
"Miss, I'm sorry, but we're getting some complaints from the other customers."
Courtney looked up at the waitress. "I'm sorry about that. They're just really excited from the overwhelming amount of big news in store. Will this take care of it?" Courtney fished out $200 from her wallet, which made the waitress smile. "Keep the change!" Duncan had taught her that little trick. Once the girls had calmed down, she resumed speaking.
"There's something else that I have to announce, something enormous that I managed to quietly keep out of the news. I wanted you to hear it from me in person, but we're going to make it public in our follow up interviews." The girls once again looked over at her. Courtney turned to Bridgette, Zoey, and Lindsay, all of whom were trying to conceal the smirk since they knew the secret. She shot them a smile and faced the others.
"Duncan and I are engaged! We're getting married!"
The table simultaneously burst into squeals, cheers, and applause. Heather had a feeling this would happen, and thought her heart would sink upon hearing the news, but she ended up having the biggest smile of them all.
"Since when?"
"How'd he propose?"
"When's the wedding?"
"The ring, THE RING! Girlfriend, let us see that ring!"
Courtney giggled, already fitting into the role of blushing bride as she held out her hand, watching the girls lean over and look at it, some were confused.
"A skull? Isn't that bad luck?" Katie asked.
Courtney shook her head. "No, that's only if it's in black. He proposed on Christmas Day, so it's been a month. Duncan got down on one knee and gave me this passionate speech about wanting to spend the rest of his life with me, and he actually cried, which made me cry. I know it's not a traditional ring, but like I told him, we don't exactly have a traditional relationship, so it's very fitting. Look, he even had it engraved." She turned the ring around to show off the "D+C" on the back of the ring, which made the girls coo.
"There's more. The wedding is going to be at Sleeping Beauty's Castle in Disneyland in the spring. Since Bridgette and Zoey will both be my maids of honor, I want the rest of you all to be my bridesmaids!" If the girls were excited early about the dance studio, they were now beyond thrilled to be hearing the news that they'd also be bridesmaids. The waitress returned with their orders and was about to speak to Courtney when she whipped out another $200 that she had secretly tucked away, knowing she would return. "Treat yourself to something pretty, and please relay my sincerest apologies to the manager." The waitress walked off, already planning a trip to Tiffany's for her next day off.
"I have a present for everybody." Courtney stood up and passed around grey Bvlgari boxes with name tags on them for each girl. They opened them up and the leather boxes inside, gasping at what they saw. Inside the boxes were gold necklaces that had a single pink diamond, blue sapphire, and yellow diamond in the shape of stars dangling. Joan had to pull a few strings to get them since the piece was discontinued, but it was worth it to see the looks on their faces.
"Even me?" Heather asked incredulously, to which Courtney smiled.
"Of course, Heather! We've all been provided with a fresh start, why not get off on the right and fashionable foot?"
The waitress brought over a chilled bottle of Dom Perignon and poured it all in flutes as the girls were putting on their necklaces once they had finished marveling. Courtney raised her flute and the girls followed suite.
"I'd like to propose a toast. To second chances, forgiveness, ever-lasting friendships, success, love, and the future. La fortuna aiuta gli audaci!"
"La fortuna aiuta gli audaci!"
They all clinked the flutes around the table and gracefully sipped the champagne.
"Wait, what does that even mean?" Zoey asked Courtney.
"It's an Italian proverb, it means "Fortune favors the bold". Duncan taught it to me."
"I like it! Oh, by the way, Court, what's the movie called?" Dakota asked.
Courtney giggled to herself, knowing the reason behind the title.
"Nights in White Satin."
She watched the girls give her confused looks.
"Huh? What does that even mean?" LeShawna spoke.
Courtney shrugged and gave her a sly smile. "You'll have to see the movie to find out."
"Anyways, give us more details about the wedding!"
"Well, Duncan's mother and I have been doing a lot of planning…" Courtney and the girls chatted about the wedding plans and Jose for nearly two hours. When they left, they left as strong ladies with even stronger friendships and bright futures ahead of them. They even got to catch a glimpse of Jose picking Heather up, and were very impressed, which made Heather blush. As Courtney drove Bridgette, Lindsay, and Zoey back to Stanley's for the meeting the boys were having with George Clooney, John Goodman, and Jeff Bridges, she tuned out their chatter and smiled to herself. This was the life she had always wanted, and this was the life she was going to lead, and none of this would have been possible if she didn't take a chance on a smartass punk.
THE GIRLS FORGAVE HEATHER AND SHE HAS A DATE WITH JOSE! WHAT DID WE THINK OF THIS CHAPTER? CHAPTER THIRTY IS WHEN I REVEAL WHAT DUNCAN'S HIDING! WHAT COULD IT POSSIBLY BE?!
