Stanley wouldn’t look at him, wouldn’t talk to him… But, they had to talk! He had to make sure Lee would be safe from Bill! “Please we need to talk!” Stanley snarled, hatred in his eyes….Stanley had never looked at him with hatred before and his heart pounded in his chest at the sight.
“Yeah like what you did before I had control of myself? Seriously Ford? I fucking told you something I would have never been willing to tell you! You violated me, my rights!” Stanford recoiled as his brother jabbed a finger into his chest. Stanley would have never told him and he would have kept thinking that Stanley hadn’t had any bad things happen to him, looking at him now...No, it was obvious that Lee was in a bad way and Stanford wouldn’t have noticed if Lee had come to the door on his own, his mind not hampered by whatever the hell an SCP was.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t think-” Stanley laughed bitterly, cutting Ford off.
“Yeah, you didn’t think! You didn’t think and I’m done. Fuck those doctors I’m leaving!” Stanford scrambled to grab his brother, he had to give Lee a journal to take far far away! If he didn’t then the world wouldn’t be safe from his mistake, from him trusting something that he shouldn’t have.
“Please, please wait Lee!” Stanley shrugged Stanford’s hand off his shoulder but stopped, clearly waiting for whatever he was going to say. He had to say this right or Stanley would just walk away and at this point who would blame him? Stanley was right, Stanford had violated him! But he hadn’t meant to! He didn’t know what Stanley had to go through and he knew deep down that Stanley had faced other hardships that Stanford would never know…
“I’m sorry I was so thoughtless Stanley, I didn’t realize that the effects would force you to tell me the truth. I’m sorry that it happened but please, please don’t leave yet. You have four more days, after that if you want to leave...You can. But, please allow me to explain some things, allow your body the rest it needs!”
He didn’t want to see Stanley get hurt because of the SCP’s effects or from Bill who might hunt him down once he realized Stanley had a Journal. Because Bill would find out one way or another because Bill was everywhere and had eyes in all sorts of places one might not expect.
“If I stay four more days, then you get to tell me why you have so many demonic images in your house.” Demonic? Wait, what? The confusion must have shown on Stanford's face because Stanley’s shoulders slumped and his face fell.
“You didn’t even realize it. God, Stanford your house is like a homage to a demon, a triangular one at that. What’d you do, sell your soul or something?” Well, that actually made it seem like he’d gotten something out of the bargain, which he had not. He hadn’t realized that until Fiddleford flipped out and the voices started in earnest.
“I might have.” Stanley sighed and ran a hand across his face.
“Did you try unicorn hair?” Ford frowned, and exactly how had Stanley known that unicorns were real? How did he know demons were real, what exactly was Stanford missing? Stanley collapsed into a chair and motioned for Stanford to sit down. If he was going to get answers about things Stanley knew why wouldn’t he join his brother?
“Why would Unicorn hair work and how?” Stanley rolled his eyes at the question and sat forward, eyes boring into Stanford like he was staring straight through him, and wasn’t that unnerving? Seeing such an adult look on his brother's face?
“Something about the purity of Unicorn hair combined with Moonstone’s motherly protection and Mercury's ability to ward off evil spirits.” He would have never expected Stanley to have gotten into such weird ideas, that was the kind of talk he was expecting from a crackpot magician. Not his brother.
“Look, weird things happen all over the world and I’ve been to a lot of places, people took pity on me and taught me stuff. Trust me demons are the last thing you want to deal with and I know how to deal with them to a certain point.” Wait, Stanley knew how to deal with demons? Maybe...Maybe he wouldn’t have to send his brother away, maybe Stanley could help him stop Bill.
“His name's Bill Cipher, he’s been directing things from behind the curtain...He lied to me, he. He tricked me into thinking he was some sort of Muse Stanley. I fell for it hook line and sinker god damned it!” All Stanford's rage and fear came boiling over and he stood before kicking his chair away from him, Stanley quietly watched him tear apart his living room. Stanford slumped to the floor, his rage dissipating into despair.
“Demons are tricky like that and they like playing with humans because we give them a challenge. Though it sounds like whatever deal you made with Bill, he tricked you, figuring if he could isolate you, which he clearly did so that he would get what he was after.”
Made sense, but why would he work with Bill now? What would make...Bill made up most of the controls of the machine that powered the Interdimensional Portal so he wouldn’t know if he was turning it on or off, hell it could be on right this second and he wouldn’t know...Well, he’d know the anomalies that it would likely emit would be obvious.
“So how do I stop him?” Stanley snorted and shook his head.
“We won’t be able to beat him alone, but we can at least stop whatever plan he was using you for.” We sounded like Stanley was thinking of staying. It would be nice to not be alone anymore, to have someone who might actually know a thing or two about stopping demons.
“I was building a portal between worlds.” Stanley let out a loud groan and shook Stanford. Just like any other time, Stanford talked about his machines and Stanley didn’t want to hear anymore. But this was important, he needed to turn the damn thing off and actually off not on.
“Of fucking course you were, like every other fool demon's trick. I knew a guy back in Wisconsin named Duke, he begged a friend to not summon a demon and failed. Though the guys he was friends with go hunting things that go bump in the night.” There were people who hunted the supernatural? Stanley knew people like that, what other tricks had they taught Stanley?
“I… How much did they teach you?” Stanford asked softly because his brother knew things he didn’t and might actually be good to have around to help if things went south. He’d always managed to get out of tight spots except when it came to Bill but here Stanley was offering help and pointers, if it wasn’t literally happening he would question if his brother was really here, was really offering the sort of help he didn’t know he’d be able to ask for.
“Enough, I could teach you some basics but most of what I know would take more than that, because there are all these layers you know and no one ever really learns everything, eventually something gets you if you take a hunter's life.”
Was that the kind of life Lee was living? Hunting down monsters to make sure they couldn’t hurt anyone?
“Are you a hunter?” Stanley laughed and shook his head at the question as if it was the funniest thing he’d heard in a long time.
“After the shit, I've seen? I’d rather not, thanks.” But, then what had Stanley been doing in the ten years they had been apart? What other changes did Stanley go through that made him more mature than the teen who had ruined Stanford's Science project?
“Okay, so...I assume you’ve investigated a lot of the odd stuff going on around here, you wouldn’t have come across any unicorn?” Stanford laughed, had he?
“The bastards said I wasn’t pure of heart.” Stanley grinned at him and wrapped an arm around Stanford's shoulders.
“That is a load of shit, I know because I asked a unicorn back in Minnesota and they said it was just a way to get humans to do dumb shit to amuse themselves as they’re immortal apparently.” Stanley’s eyes brightened and he lifted a necklace out of his shirt, pulling it off he shoved it onto Stanford.
“Stanley what, wait!” His brother managed to jam the odd-looking necklace around his neck and Stanford staggered as a weight was suddenly lifted from off of him, not his brother’s hands...This felt different like he’d literally had the world on his shoulders.
“Forgot I was wearing that, I never take it off. But, I figure you need it more than me right now.” What in the name of Yahweh?
“What is this?” Stanley twirled the pendant on the end of the multi-colored cord.
“Like I said I met a Unicorn in Minnesota, he gave me some of his hair, enough to make a few necklaces, which I gave to Duke and Sam by the way, and then I put one around my own neck. So it’s unicorn hair and the pendant...Don’t ask me how someone put Mercury inside Moonstone, but there it is. I kind of figured Sam knew a witch or two and one owed him.”
So like the protection Stanley had been talking about and obviously, it worked if he felt better not knowing what it was so no placebo effect.
