10 February 1915
Elsa was only too happy to be back in Arendelle again after the adventure with the mission to Atlantis. She and Moana had all but insisted on Helga staying at the castle with them, at least until the paperwork solidifying her as an official Arendelle citizen was finished. The fact that they'd stayed in the US longer than they had intended with the fact that the mission had taken barely a couple weeks to complete had not been lost on anyone. Elsa and Moana had made use of the time to try and use some diplomatic efforts to get all sides in the war to talk again by bringing the US to the table as a mediator. Of course it had failed, but she could return to Arendelle with a clean conscience for having at least tried.
When they'd gotten back, they'd found that the war had indeed ground to a halt and the front was not moving. Elsa had sighed heavily as she saw those battle lines and the casualties list. Moana had done her best to keep Elsa's mind off of it by reminding her to contact the Arendelle Institute of Science to talk to them about how to detect magic. Elsa had agreed, but she hadn't been hopeful. The last bunch of scientists who had wanted to study their magic had been far too intrusive for Elsa and Moana.
Which meant that when the scientists of the Institute insisted on respecting the trio's privacy, she had been down right pleased. She should have expected it given that she was going to the Arendelle Institute rather than random scientists coming to her. What was even more expected was that they had called in a collegue from Russia named Nikola Tessla. Elsa had heard of the famous inventor, but she had never dreamed of meeting him.
However, when she did, she found she enjoyed his thoughts on how to go about detecting magic far more than any other, particularly that Edison character who had been leading the previous effort. And so the group had gotten down to working on the problem. Elsa, Moana, and Helga all made periodic trips to the Institute's labs where they conjured the smallest magics they could for sustained time as the scientists struggled to tune their equipment to detect the energies.
It wasn't until two weeks in that Tesla had the idea to use gold and silver conductors to see if a change in metals worked. And to everyone's surprise, it worked. For the first time ever, the machines screeched with static as Elsa performed a minor conjuring. Even she had been caught up in the excitement of the moment. The only one it didn't detect was Helga. That had taken more work, and a crystal receptor after Elsa explained the source of Helga's powers. Again, it had been Tesla that had suggested a crystal receptor for the detection, and when it had worked, everyone had cheered. They had finally keyed into how to detect all forms of magic.
Which wasn't as really useful as it first appeared. The machines were bulky and utterly stationary. But it was a step in the right direction. Elsa had congratulated them, and had all but forced Tesla to protect his design for the detector behind a patent, lest Edison steal it too. She honestly didn't want the famous American inventor to get the patent and then rip everyone off like he usually did. Elsa truly detested the man's greed. Which was why she founded the Arendelle Patent Office and wrote the Patent Laws shortly after. And today she put her signature to the very laws she had written after they had passed Parliament.
Elsa sighed as she leaned back after dashing her signature across the paper work. Her aide picked up the parchments and stuck them in a folder to be filed and placed into effect. Elsa looked over to where Moana and Helga stood and she smiled brightly at the two. It was still freezing cold with snow all over the ground outside, but inside it was warm enough that both were in floral skirts. Elsa had helped pick out colors that complimented Helga's skin tone, tattoo color, hair and eyes. She was actually moderately proud of her choice of the soft blue shades mingled with vibrant reds and greens. Still, she pushed herself out from her desk and smirked.
“I am sure the two of you are as eager as I am to get things done. Honestly, I had hoped that something more interesting would have happened by now, but let's not look a gift horse in the mouth. Time to get to know you, Helga, as been a real blessing of the gods. And I love how your tattoo's Atlantian design contrasts so well with our Polynesian design! Though, I'd love to add some more tattoos to all of us!” Elsa smiled brightly.
“I'd love to get some more, but it will take time to detect the demons and monsters on a global scale like we want. Until then, we have a war to run and win,” Helga stated flatly.
“Helga, don't spoil the mood!” Moana protested.
“I am sorry, but I just came from the Intelligence Division. We've had a security breach at the War Ministry,” Helga's tone was irritated.
“How bad is it?” Elsa demanded.
“Bad. It looks like they got the designs for a few of the new armored vehicles and some strategic information on troop numbers and movements. And they took off on a ship, but made the Intel guys think they'd gone by plane at first. They think they are headed not to Europe, but to America, and via a round about route to Central Africa,” Helga explained as the group left the briefing room.
“Gods damn it. Central Africa? Isn't that largely French territory?” Moana groaned.
“Yes it is. Which is why they actually asked me to see of the three of us could try an intercept. The ship is docking at this little trading post near the Congo Jungle. Why there, I don't know, but it isn't making any other ports. However, the ship is going from that little port over to Miami. And that is why they think the spy, we don't know if it was male or female, is headed to America,” Helga explained further.
“Alright, so are we supposed to be beating the steamer there in our little boat? Because I don't see that happening,” Moana frowned.
“No, they are going to put us on a destroyer for the trip. They want to try and intercept at sea, but they aren't holding their breath. So, we are trying to beat them to the port. Where we are supposed to be laying in wait for them. Again, they don't know why they are going to this little trading post on a river, but I did some digging, and former President Theodore Roosevelt once passed through there on safari, about two years ago,” Helga stated with mild irritation.
“Helga, if there is one thing we figured out long ago, it is that you can't spend your immortality being irritated at things beyond your control. We'll do the best we can, but for now, we have a meeting to get to. Some British family of explorers are wanting to talk to us, and we decided to meet them in the salon. You up for tagging along?” Elsa asked sweetly.
Helga snorted. “Well, seeing as how this relationship is going, I guess I'd better. I might be one of three women making decisions around here before I know it!”
“That's the spirit! Look at the bright side of things! Immortality would suck if all you are is irritated and depressed all the time, right Island Lilly?” Moana actually poked Elsa in the ribs.
“Hey! My depression is getting better lately! Has to be my exposure to you two!” Elsa protested, and Helga actually giggled.
Elsa and Moana smiled at Helga. They really liked it when the former soldier let her hair down enough to giggle like one of the girls with them. Though, they had yet to even share the same bed, as Helga was insisting on getting to know them first. She wasn't the type to just jump into any girl's bed. And that was perfectly alright with Elsa and Moana. They liked the slow approach Helga was taking.
Elsa's thoughts chopped off as she stepped into the salon where the British family was waiting. Elsa smiled at them, the man was older and had obvious scars on his face, while the wife had the brightest red hair Elsa had seen outside of Norway or Ireland. Behind the seated couple stood four adults that Elsa took for the couple's children. Their style of dress was modern enough, but reflected the prudish fashion of England.
Elsa and Moana took their seats opposite across from the Brits and Helga stood right in between them, almost at attention, though she had a hand on each chair. Elsa and Moana smiled at the couple and it was then that Elsa noted that the wife had a scarf covering what looked like scars of her own on her neck. Elsa decided not to discuss the scars and instead turned to their reason for being there.
“Mr. and Mrs. Oliver, what can we do for you today? We didn't exactly get the chance to go into details on the phone. Just that you were wanting to see us about funding an expedition of some kind to Africa?” Elsa started.
“Yes, Empress Elsa. I am afraid that after our first attempt at the expedition, my dear husband and I have unfortunately been barred from making a second attempt by the Royal Academy. Even Oxford won't offer us funding to make a second attempt. Apparently, being the only survivors of the first expedition has left us somewhat tainted in the academic circles.
“Long story short, we'd just had a baby boy when we decided to launch an expedition to Africa to study some of the local plant and wild life in hopes of finding some new approaches to medicine. We'd gotten the funding and had hired an old fashioned sailing ship along with a crew and team. We were off the coast of Africa when something happened during a storm that set the ship on fire, and killed most of the team and crew in their sleep. My husband and I, along with our baby Michael, barely made it off the ship before it sank. We found ourselves shipwrecked on the African coast and alone.
“We decided to settle in, and build a new life there, as most of our equipment and supplies went down with the ship. We'd constructed a tree house and had fortified ourselves in against the local wild life. However, while we still hoped each day that a new ship would come and save us, we didn't have high hopes for that, so we decided to get as content as we could. Sadly, we let our guard down too much at one point as a leopard was able to get to the house and broke in through a window. John was good with a gun, but this thing moved like the devil himself.
“In the end, the leopard got us both. Slashed John across the face and neck, while it just got me on the neck. You might have noted the scars. We both blacked out at that point, so we have no idea what the fate of Michael was. When the sailors from the ship that rescued us found us, Michael was gone, and so was the leopard.
“It turns out that the Academy had been watching the progress of our expedition via telegraph contact with the captain and when we went silent, they sent another expedition to find us, or what was left of us, immediately via the fastest available ship. In the end, they only found us because of the last reported position of our ship mentioned the river and the jungle. They were able to connect the two with the coordinates and began searching the area. That is how we were rescued from death at the claws of a leopard.
“The Academy then did an extensive review of our academic credentials and fined both of us for the loss of life on the expedition as we were the stated heads of the expedition. We were barred from leaving England until just this year as part of the punishment. According to the Academy, the safety of our expedition should have been our first priority and we should have taken necessary measures to ensure that an accident of that magnitude didn't happen,” Mrs. Oliver explained with bitterness in her voice.
“I see. While I agree that you two were responsible for your people's safety, it sounds a lot like no one ever found out what caused the accident, did they?” Elsa asked softly.
“No. They never found the wreck, so all they had to go on was our statements. Still, we were easy scapegoats for a failed Academy expedition, so we took our lumps and have come back swinging,” Mr. Oliver stated flatly.
“So what did the two of you do in the mean time? I mean, while you were waiting for the ban to be lifted,” Moana asked.
“We worked in the medical fields as best we could. Louise and I experimented with various chemical medications that other expeditions found or other laboratories concocted. We maintained our credentials as best we could with all the obstructionism we were facing. However, no one had journeyed into the African Congo Jungle yet, so when we found our ban lifted at last, we immediately set about putting together an expedition to Africa. Unfortunately, our obstructionist opponents in the Academy and at Oxford have pretty much seen to it that even our children here can't get the funding we need to put the plan into action. Which is what brought us to you, Empress Elsa,” John Oliver said quietly.
“Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't you a seated noble of England, Mr. Oliver?” Elsa asked as her eyes narrowed.
“Yes, I am. I am Lord Oliver, but I lost my holdings over the failed expedition. All I have left of them is my seat in Parliament. Which is due to be passed to my son in just a few short years,” Lord Oliver smiled as he looked up at a strapping lad who towered over everyone but Helga.
Elsa smiled then. “As it happens, we have a mission of our own to Africa, so we'd be happy to fund your expedition. I do hope this isn't just an attempt to find a missing son who is likely dead now. Because as much as I am willing to help you right now, I won't fund you if that is your stated goal.”
Lord Oliver sighed, “Yes, I see you have heard the same rumors we have. That we haven't given up on Michael. Truth is, my wife and I gave up on finding him alive several years ago. The least we could do is honor his memory in trying to do the same mission again, and this time succeed at it. If the Porters could do it, then we should be able to as well. None of our children would be coming along, just in case of a repeat of unfortunate events, mind you. But our official, and true, goal is to seek new and valuable medications. The war will likely produce quite the need for them, if it hasn't already.”
Elsa leaned back in her chair and then her eyes narrowed. “You mentioned the Porter expedition. Then I am relatively certain you've heard the same rumors we have about just what they found. A wild man, with pale skin, and brown hair?”
“We have heard that yes. But there is simply no way that could be our Michael. The leopard got him, and that cannot be changed. This strange wild man, reportedly raised by apes, might be pure myth, or it could be some poor soul who suffered a head injury after a wreck like ours. There is simply no way Michael survived the leopard attack,” Mrs. Oliver stated flatly.
“I am sorry to have opened old wounds, Lady Oliver. Not ever having children means I am simply in no position to pretend to know what you are going or have gone through. Still, I have to ensure that the Foundation's funds for scientific expeditions are being spent on actual scientific research. Mind you, the Foundation is largely seen as an archaeological institute, but we also fund other sciences. So, for right now, I am going to approve your mission. We will need you to contact the Foundation board no later than two days from now with a sound plan and stated goal. Once they have that, they'll cut you a check for the funds.
“Sadly, mind you, my wife and I won't be in Arendelle much longer. So, we'll have to wish the two of you well now, rather than later. And I do hope that the two of you find not only the medicine you seek, but also some peace of mind in that jungle,” Elsa smiled softly.
“Thank you, Empress Elsa! We cannot express how happy we are that you agreed to this! We thought we'd have to ply you with promises or something,” Lord Oliver smiled broadly.
“Just promise me that you'll credit the Foundation as much as anything or anyone else for any finds. We need all the publicity we can get with the war hogging all the headlines these days, and with influential donors being so tight fisted with their donations!” Elsa returned the smile.
“Deal, Empress Elsa!” Lady Oliver smiled every bit as broadly.
17 February 1915
Elsa climbed out of the launch boat from the destroy Reinheart in her Royal Arendelle Army uniform and smiled as Helga and Moana followed her. They had gone full speed ahead ever since leaving Arendelle the day after meeting with the Olivers. Elsa almost regretted not telling them that she was going to the same place they were, but only slightly. Technically, this was an invasion of foreign territory, as this region was claimed by the French, but acts of war on a grander scale would mean the French wouldn't give this a second thought if they ever found out about it at all.
Elsa noted the French flag flying from the small trading port as the destroyer waited offshore. For such a small outpost, Elsa wondered, where was all the cargo going to? That would be something she'd have to look into, but for right now, she shouldered her rifle, pack, and other assorted gear. If they ran into any French troops, she had a plan to deal with them, but for now, it looked like there wasn't even a Foreign Legion post for miles around this way station.
Elsa opened the door to the small trading post and noted the man behind the counter suddenly go stiff. Then he cracked the most charming smile he could, which was saying a bit given his rigid posture. Elsa started looking around and examining his stores, and found that most of it was common household goods. Now Elsa's curiosity doubled. Why would there be a general goods merchant this far out in the jungle hinterland?
So, Elsa walked up to the clerk and put on her own winning smile as Helga and Moana entered the store as well. “Monsieur, I am looking for some information. Do you know if a freighter has come in recently? Likely flying a Swedish flag?”
“Mademoiselle, I assure you, no freighter has come in today! Or any other day this week! I am expecting a shipment of supplies aboard a Swedish flagged freighter within three days though! Please, I don't want any trouble!” the man said in a highly nervous voice.
“Then answer me this. Where is the Legion post you are supplying with all this?” Elsa gestured at the stores.
“Mademoiselle, I am sorry, but I cannot tell you that!” the French shop clerk stammered.
“Oh, really?” Elsa purred as she set her rucksack and rifle down. Her whole outfit was for show. Her real uniform was currently in that rucksack. She then leaned against the counter and smiled at him as she leaned forward. “What if I ask really nicely?”
The Frenchman swallowed hard, “Please, Mademoiselle, I must ask you to leave my shop at once! I want no trouble, but neither will I betray my countrymen!”
Elsa smiled nastily then. “But you already have trouble, sir,” she said in English now over French. “Because if you don't tell me what I want to know, bad things are going to happen here. Bad things to you, this shop, and anything else that I can think of. We are the ones with the guns in here, you know.”
The Frenchman seemed to steel his resolve then, “No, Mademoiselle, and that is final. Do as you will! I will not sell my countrymen to you British dogs!”
Elsa actually started laughing then and Moana and Helga stepped up behind her. She switched to her native Norwegian. “Sir, we are from Arendelle. You should have checked that first before accusing us of being Brits.”
Now the man stopped and gave each woman a hard look. He looked at Helga first, but didn't seem to register her, then looked at Elsa, and it was like a light began coming on, and then when he gave Moana a hard look, that light flashed on so fast he almost stumbled backwards. “Empresses! Oh, my apologies! I didn't recognize you!”
Elsa snorted as she realized he spoke Norwegian. “Your accent needs work, sir. Where did you learn Norwegian?”
“I trade with many peoples, so I require many languages! And I am sorry, but I must still refuse you the information you seek!” the Frenchman stated apologetically.
“Fair enough, sir,” Elsa sighed. “Your loyalty to your country does you honor. Still, there is a relatively close Legion post or this cargo you have on order wouldn't be coming here, would it?”
“Empress, um, Elsa, right?” Elsa nodded, “Right. All I will say is that I have many customers in the wilds of this jungle. And not all of them are Legion, or even some of them. I will not disclose my clientele.”
“Fine. Then tell me where the Porters' camp is, please. Surely you can tell me where to find them?” Elsa asked nicely now.
The Frenchman seemed to consider that for a moment. “I am afraid I can't. Since the war started, they have moved about. They even refuse to come here to seek my goods anymore. Even the tree house stands empty now. Tarzan and Jane are currently living with Jane's father in his camp or with the gorillas. And contacting any of them is a chore on a good day now.”
“Damn. Alright, I hate to do this to you, as you seem like the upright and honorable sort, but until such time as our target arrives, I am afraid I am going to have to monitor all of your communications, and camp out here. Our destroyer will remain nearby at all times, so don't get any foolish ideas about trying anything in the night. We are not here to grab territory, nor to harm the French Republic in anyway. This is a matter of Arendelle national security only. As such, I won't discuss it,” Elsa explained.
“But of course, Empress. I have fine rooms for yourselves if you wish them. And I can show you where my telegraph is,” the Frenchman offered.
“Thank you. I hope this doesn't cause you any undue loss of sales, but we are placing this whole post into Arendelle controlled territory now. We'll relent and return it to you immediately after we have what we came for,” Elsa assured him as he led her to his communications shack.
20 February 1915
Elsa was monitoring the telegraph when the distinctive clicks started up. She was careful to translate them, sending the proper responses, and then she smiled. Three days of staking out the shop had just paid off. The Swedish freighter Lutefisk was about to dock later that day. Elsa hurried to let Helga, who was watching the Frenchman tend his shop, and Moana who was watching the docks know. They all agreed to keep a low profile until the ship reached the dock and the sailors started unloading.
Elsa pulled out three copies of a hand sketched picture of a man that had been described by witnesses as the likely target. They took positions as the ship tied off and watched as each sailor descended the ship. Then they saw him. A rather nondescript looking fellow, if it weren't for the distinctive scar on his cheek. The three crept closer, and Helga cocked her rifle, just as the destroyer Reinheart came out of hiding and sounded their battle klaxon.
The man looked up and started to dart off before a wall of ice formed in front of him. Elsa smiled nastily as she walked around it. Moana came around from the other side, and Helga came out of hiding at last. All three pointed weapons at him, Helga had her rifle, Moana a pistol, and Elsa a ball of swirling snow and ice. The man looked between all three and seemed a little too calm.
“Give it up! We caught you. Hand over what you stole, and surrender peacefully, and you'll live to be traded,” Elsa laid out his options. “If you run, or you fight, you just die tired.”
“That is what you think, bitch!” and the man tossed a grenade between Elsa and Helga, and bull rushed Moana.
Elsa and Helga dove apart and the grenade went off. Moana got three shots off before the man slammed into her and knocked her into the ice wall hard enough to bruise. Then he was off. Helga was quick to her feet and fired several carefully aimed shots at him, though it was as if none of them hit as he kept running into the trees.
“After him!” Elsa ordered as the three women darted after him, their intelligence uniforms blending with the foliage better than the man's sailor outfit would.
They chased him deep into the trees until eventually, the sailor managed to elude them. Elsa, Moana, and Helga slowly worked a methodical way around and kept looking for signs of the man's passage. Ultimately, they each realized they were lost, and the sun was setting. They had been searching for hours and had lost their prey. Elsa let out a roar of frustration.
“Alright, we need to get our barrings. Let's try to back track to the trading post. That is the most likely place he went,” Moana suggested.
“Alright. However, I am almost positive I hit him a minimum of five times. He should have dropped,” Helga growled.
“And I hit him twice with my pistol. He has to be severely wounded, not that I have seen even a drop of blood,” Moana agreed.
“Girls, we may have found a monster in human form. And with our ship penning his ship in, he won't likely be trying to get to the trade post. He'll be going for the next best thing. A Legion post,” Elsa pointed out as they found their trail back to the trading post.
It was dark and they found the trade post overrun by Arendelle sailors and marines, with the civilian sailors all being questioned, and the Frenchman looking fit to be tied. Elsa sighed as she walked up to the executive officer of the destroyer and he saluted. She returned the salute and sighed heavily.
“My Empress, I take it he got away,” the executive officer said.
“That he did, Bjorn. Look, secure things here. We need to talk to the Frenchman again. I think I know where our monster in human clothes is going,” Elsa sighed.
“Monster? You mean our spy was some kind of monster?” Bjorn exclaimed.
“Yes. That is the only explanation as to why none of our shots even hurt him. We didn't find even blood, and he left no tracks we could find. So, now we have to get answers from our new friend,” Elsa sighed as she turned to face the Frenchman who was looking more worried now than ever.
Elsa walked up to him and looked him dead in the eye. “Where would he be going? That wasn't a man. He should have been shot dead multiple times. If you value the lives of your countrymen, tell me where that monster is going to,” Elsa stated flatly.
“And what do you mean by that?” the Frenchman asked.
“I mean, that man, or monster as it really is, stole some stuff that will prolong the war considerably. He is a spy, though as monsters go, he could be working for anyone. For all we know, the next post he gets to, he'll likely destroy outright for being exposed. Monsters are prone to temper issues, after all,” Elsa growled.
“Mademoiselle, I promise you! I don't know where he is going. There are only scientific research posts and primitive tribes around here. Not a Legion post for hundreds of kilometers!” the Frenchman protested.
“You're lying. Where is the Legion post?” Elsa demanded.
“There isn't one! I promise! The nearest Legion post is on the edge of the jungle to the north!” the Frenchman explained in a rush.
Elsa growled and then turned away. She looked at Moana and Helga. “Damn it! Then where is it headed?”
“We'll have to find out, one way or another, Elsa. And we really don't have a lot of time to do it. Which means we have to start bright and early in the morning,” Helga shrugged.
Casiopea stumbled through the jungle blindly in the night. She hated the fact that she couldn't see in pitch black with human eyes. Still, as a hell hound, at least her sense of smell still worked. She kept sniffing the air and hoping against hope that the trio of demigoddesses had been lost in the jungle. Her male human form having left them behind some hours ago. She crept up to see the trading post, in hopes that the three demigoddesses hadn't returned and she could hide back aboard ship as a rat or something like that.
She was sorely disappointed when she noticed that not only had the three demigoddesses returned to the post, but there was a whole company of Arendelle marines and sailors ashore running all over the place. She momentarily contemplated still trying the rat form and creeping back aboard the ship, but she dismissed the idea instantly. If anyone of those marines saw her, they'd likely wonder what a rat was doing creeping out of the jungle. As far as she knew, rats didn't exactly survive well in the jungles.
She sighed and was about to turn around when she sensed a presence behind her. Then a voice came from the dark, all quiet and menacing. “Casiopea, I presume?”
For a male form, her female voice coming from it would have disturbed many of those humans, “You are my local contact?”
“Yes. I regret that I have been keeping my distance from the post since the war began, so I was unable to be here to meet and aid you. Did you get it?” the voice from behind asked.
“Yes, I did. However, since I was discovered, I won't be able to make the rest of the trip to America with it. I must return to the underworld quickly,” Casiopea snarled.
“I'll take it the rest of the way. However, I must give good cause for it, so I must set it up. Also, sadly there is no underworld access near by. And I don't have the ability to show you to one. I have responsibilities in maintaining this disguise,” the voice answered. “And just be aware, I may have to aid them in hunting you, to alay suspicion. My wife is already suspicious over how we have not conceived children yet, despite trying.”
“Be cautious then. Demons can have children, but that could be easily lead to worse complications. Better to use the excuse of sterility. However, if you use your powers, the demigoddesses won't fail to notice that. Even exceptional physical capability might be hard to explain to them,” Casiopea stated flatly as she dropped the case she had been carrying in a concealed pocket that was too small to have fit it. “Septimus found out how strong they are the hard way.”
“Indeed. Get going then. Follow the river. You should be able to find it easily enough. Just be wary of the dangers in the jungle. Also, how badly are you wounded? I heard the gunshots,” the voice calmly replied as she felt the case be taken from the ground.
“Badly. If my blood wasn't pure fire, they'd have had a trail to follow easily enough. As it is, I was just barely able to suppress the bleeding. Thankfully, they were aiming for a human form, not a hell hound's. Most of the wounds are purely flesh wounds,” Casiopea replied as she turned and hurried along the river edge, careful to avoid stepping in the water that would quench her flames.
Moana growled in frustration as she, Elsa, and Helga all slogged through the jungle, looking for any sign of the spy's passing. Finally, Moana roared in frustration and came to a stop. They were right next to a pool of water and a thought came to her. She whistled to the other two and they came over and looked at her. Moana just frowned.
“There is a lot of jungle here, and only the three of us! Elsa, you and I can shape change into animals, but that won't help unless we know where the monster stopped long enough to get a scent. Helga, you can't, but you have your own powers as we have seen. That said, we need guidance, so here is a pool of water and Elsa, you know what to do,” Moana's frustration was so evident even she noted it.
Elsa nodded and then knelt down next to the pool of water. There she cast her magic and the still water began to ripple and shine with light as an image projected itself onto it. The image was clearly from the previous night and showed their quarry moving quickly through the jungle. Then he stopped at the water's edge and rested for what seemed only a couple minutes, before he began moving again. Then the water cleared and the image disappeared.
Moana nodded. “Well, there is the lucky break we needed! Look just ahead. There is the rock he stopped on!”
Elsa nodded and transformed into a wolf. Helga stared in wonder and then shook her head and looked at Moana. “I wish I could do that! Shields and bolts of energy just seem mundane compared to becoming an animal. And I only have guns to fight with, no magic weapons!”
Moana chuckled. “Would you know what to do with a spear, sword, or club? I mean really do with it to get the most potential from it?”
Helga grunted. “True, but we've seen that a mundane gun isn't cutting it. That monster got away because even though I shot it, it didn't do anything. Something with more punch is going to be needed for going up against these things.”
Moana nodded. “I agree. Maybe a magic gun with a bayonet would be good. Of course, that would mean another trip to Atlantis and trying to convince that crystal.”
“Yeah, I am not eager to try and go toe to toe with the Leviathan again,” Helga said with feeling.
Suddenly Elsa let out a bark and Moana nodded. “Elsa has his scent. Let's get this chase on with!”
Elsa led the way in wolf form and the other two followed at a quick march. Elsa then suddenly stopped and started growling as they entered a bamboo forested area of the jungle. Moana looked at her wife and Elsa transformed back into her human form. All three of them were soaked head to toe in sweat, staining their military uniforms, but none of them had even the slightest mind for that as Elsa spoke softly.
“We're being followed. I can't tell where from, but it is definitely a human smell,” Elsa hissed.
Moana just snarled. “Come out where we can see you!” she demanded, and her rage was building. This was supposed to be a quick mission and it was getting more and more frustrating.
Suddenly there was a soft thud behind them and all of them turned as one and trained their military issue rifles on a woman who stood there in a loin cloth that barely covered her middling chest or hips. Her long brown hair framed a beautiful, if somewhat plain, face with sparkling hazel eyes. Moana could almost see the brain behind those eyes working a mile a minute. Then the woman put her hands on her hips and glared at the trio.
“Who are you, and why are you in our jungle?” she demanded in a decidedly British accent.
“The better question is who are you? We have the guns, miss?” Helga snarled as she let her voice trail off.
“Jane Porter, thank you very much! Now, answer my question, before I or my husband have cause to be rude,” Jane demanded.
“I am Moana, this is Elsa and Helga,” Moana answered. “We are part of an Arendelle expedition to this region, for matters of national security we can't discuss.”
“Prove it! Show me some of your magic!” Jane demanded.
Elsa nodded and conjured a short lived ice spear in her hands. Moana then gave Jane a hard look and blew through a ring of her fingers, producing a gout of flames. Helga stood stock still as they had all agreed, keeping her powers as a reserve surprise as long as they could was best. Jane seemed to nod then and her sassy stance never changed as she folded her arms under her breasts.
“Alright then. I believe you. Now explain why two demigoddesses and their friend are in our jungle and nearing the gorilla nests?” Jane demanded.
“We are tracking a spy through this region who stole sensitive information about the war effort, Mrs. Porter. That is all we can say about what he stole. But needless to say, if we had someone who knew the jungle who could guide us to his potential location, that would be best. And being a British citizen kinda makes you our prime choice,” Moana offered.
“Perhaps I could. I know the jungle better than Jane does. What can you tell me about them?” a male voice from behind asked.
The three women turned as one to see a man with even less of a loin cloth around his hips, that did nothing to hide the size of his penis beneath it. Moana sighed and then looked at both of them, lowering her rifle. “Alright, we accept. I guess the rumors about you were true, Mr. Tarzan,” her voice dripped with frustration.
“Alright, can you point me in the direction he went?” Tarzan politely requested as Jane joined him.
“They were following the river, though I should warn you, it isn't a man we are following, but a monster in human form. We don't know what kind of monster, but several rifle shots yesterday didn't bring it down, so either it's form isn't humanoid, or it is made of a material that reforms easily like mud or lava,” Moana offered.
“Alright, that would have taken them close to the gorillas, but not right through them. Follow me,” Tarzan offered.
The group began hurrying in the direction and only took a break once for lunch. Then when night began to fall, Tarzan made a hand gesture and everyone froze in place. The group crept forward and they saw at the bottom of a narrow ravine, that they would have missed if Tarzan hadn't stopped them, the sailor they sought, desperately trying to climb the slick walls. He noticed them too, and started growling at them like a wild dog.
Elsa knelt next to the ravine and sneered at him, “Not so great of an escape artist as you thought you were, are you?” she taunted him.
The man just opened his mouth and spewed a gout of flames at Elsa. Elsa just smiled and gently blew a cloud of icy vapors back, snuffing the flames. Moana cocked and eye brow as she wondered when Elsa had figured that trick out. Honestly, her wife kept pulling random trick out when she'd thought she'd figured Elsa out already. Still, that reaction from their enemy meant that they still had that fight in them.
“Have it your way, buddy,” Moana called down as she inhaled deeply and then blew out a huge gout of flames, hotter and larger than the monster's.
The monster just flinched and then started laughing as it's form began to shift. Rapidly, the male human form disappeared, revealing a dog like creature that was all fangs, claws, and horns. Slung across it's back was a large sack with straps. Elsa was about to call down to it again when several shots rang out in succession. The hell hound lurched and fell to the ground, but continued to growl. Moana and Elsa turned as Helga began switching out magazines in her rifle.
“Helga, stop! We need her alive!” Elsa ordered.
“Her?” Helga gave Elsa a confused look.
“It is a female hell hound. We need her to answer questions,” Moana said as she looked down into the ravine.
Then the hell hound started a strangled form of laughing. “You're too late! What you seek I no longer have, and I'll never tell you a thing! Not that I have long to do so!”
Elsa snarled down, “We can get you healed if you tell us what you did with the documents! And of course, tell us who you really work for!”
“Fuck you, wretch! My master will know of my fate,” Casiopea snarled, the coughed twice and then lay still.
“Damnit!” Elsa snarled and then conjured an ice stair down into the ravine. Everyone saw it begin to instantly melt, but each step Elsa took on it froze it solid again. When she reached the bottom, she began to dig through the back that was strapped over it. Moana looked over at Helga who looked somewhat ashamed of herself.
“Helga, don't worry. I tried to reduce her to ashes with that breath of fire I did. Elsa was the only one who thought to take her alive. Not that I expect that it would have done us any good. So don't feel bad for defending us against an obviously hostile monster,” Moana tried to soothe Helga's feelings as she wrapped her in a hug.
It took a moment, but Moana finally felt Helga relax in her arms and Helga sighed. Moana let her go and kissed the tall blonde on the cheek. She then turned back to Tarzan and Jane, both of whom stood a distance away and looked on with curiosity. Moana noted the soft smile on Jane's face, but Tarzan could have been carved from stone. She shrugged and then smiled at them.
“Hey, we are going to need to go over every step this bitch made. We'll have to look for hiding spots or recently dug up areas. Unless Elsa finds what we are looking for on the bitch, that is,” Moana smirked.
“Honey, we didn't get that lucky! Bag is empty except for magical components!” Elsa called up.
Moana sighed and everyone noted that this time Elsa came up on a pillar of ice as she came to stand next to Moana and smiled at Helga. “Helga, I don't blame you. You did the right thing. That beast wasn't going to go down without a fight, and hell hounds are notoriously loyal to those they serve. So you don't have to feel bad about it. I just get a little frustrated when things go sideways.”
“Thanks, Elsa, Moana,” Helga said softly.
Elsa stepped up and gently kissed the blonde on her soft lips. Helga seemed startled for a moment before she relaxed into it and embraced Elsa, her hands wandering all over the pale blonde's body. They came up for air as they both felt another set of hands envelope them. Moana smiled up at them, and they both leaned down and shared a soft kiss with the brown islander. They finally broke apart as Tarzan coughed from behind Helga.
They all turned to see Tarzan giving them a frown, though Jane was obviously glaring at Tarzan. Moana read the tension between the two, but couldn't figure it out. Still, she was grateful that Helga was finally beginning to respond to her and Elsa's affections. She sighed as she walked up to the jungle couple.
“Alright, we won't get anything done tonight. Not with the sun setting. We need to camp for the night. Do either of you have a suggestion where we should pitch our tents?” Moana asked politely.
“Yes, in our camp. I'd welcome the company. We don't get a lot of visitors,” Jane said enthusiastically.
“Good! Lead the way!” Helga demanded in a light hearted tone.
Tarzan looked sullen but led the group through the various trees and vines. The walk wasn't overly long, but when they got there, they'd have sworn there was no camp. That was, until Tarzan pulled back a bush to reveal a quaint tent with a small camp ground that had been well concealed. The trio of women smiled as they entered the area and found that there was enough room for them to pitch their four-man tent. They immediately set about setting it up as Jane started a fire. Tarzan grunted something about checking on the gorillas and took off.
Jane seemed to sigh in relief as Tarzan took off. She then smiled at the three women and came over and pitched in on setting up the tent. Between the four of them, they had it up in record time. When they were done, the three set up their cots and set their bags down. They then walked out to find stump and logs set around the fire for seating. The trio opted for a log across from one of the stumps. Moana and Elsa flanked their new lover as they took their seats. Helga just chuckled as the pair laid their heads on her shoulders and put their hands in her lap.
Jane chuckled, “Well, I can see where this is going. Will I need ear plugs tonight?”
“We don't do that kind of thing when on a mission. It is too distracting. Not that it isn't tempting, as it would be our first time including Helga in it,” Moana purred.
Helga smirked, “And do I not get a say in that detail? Kissing for the first time is one thing. I think I still need some time before sex is on the table.”
“Awe, spoil sport!” Elsa teased as she pinched Helga's butt to elicit a squeal.
Helga just glared at Elsa but then began to laugh. “Damn, what the hell did I walk into here?”
“Right into the laps of two big perverted lizzies! That is what!” Moana purred as she snuggled closer to Helga.
Helga just laughed again and put her arms around Elsa and Moana, and hugged them close. Jane chuckled again and then seemed to sober up fast. Moana gave her a concerned look but then it was Helga who beat them all to the question.
“What is wrong, Jane?” Helga asked gently.
“Seeing the three of you like that reminds me of when Tarzan and I first met. He was so taken with me! I thought I'd have to beat him off with my umbrella. But then I began to fall for him too. He was actually the first man I ever developed feelings for. Of course I had crushed on both women and men before, what school girl hasn't, but he was the first I actually had feelings for.
“And for a time, life out here was good. Mind you, it took getting used to to become comfortable with a loin cloth that almost doesn't do the job, but it grew on me. Then Tarzan started to change. It was little things at first, but now he is so distant, I am worried about him. I thought that we could try starting a family about a year ago as a means to fixing the problem, but in the year since, we haven't been able to conceive. It has me worried,” Jane explained sadly.
“I am sorry to hear about that, Jane. Moana and I can't have kids, both of us being women and all, and if we add Helga, that won't change the mix. But I know what that pressure to have them feels like. My parliament has been pushing us to seek a solution for the sake of producing an heir. We just haven't had a lot of time to think about it and come up with a solution,” Elsa explained sympathetically.
“And I am sorry to hear that. But I wonder, do the two of you want children, or rather, the three of you?” Jane asked seriously.
“Yes,” Helga answered instantly and firmly.
“Well, while Elsa and I agreed before we got married in the Pacific that we'd never have them, I kinda wanted my own kids. I just wasn't comfortable outliving them, so I agreed in principal,” Moana cast an apologetic look at Elsa.
“Honey, why didn't you ever say anything?” Elsa asked softly, looking up at Moana.
“Because, you never seemed to give it a second thought, Island Lilly. Unless someone brought it up, you never seemed to think about it,” Moana countered.
“Moana, I deliberately tried to not think about it! It is a sore subject, particularly after losing Anna. But yes, I wanted a family too, or at least that is what I thought until I met you. After that, and becoming effectively immortal, it seemed to be less of an issue, but it was still something I'd dream about from time to time. I don't think my heart ever let that dream go,” Elsa softly put her hand on Moana's in Helga's lap.
Helga covered their hands with hers, “It seems we are cursed to always want what we can never have.”
“I know. Three women can't have children,” Elsa said softly.
“Maybe so, but there are solutions. Daddy is a medical doctor as well as a primatologist. He has kept up on all the latest medical journals, or at least as best we can out here, well before we were no longer welcome at the trading post, and he suggested Tarzan and I go to England or America and get tested for fertility. Daddy checked Tarzan as best he could and found that he was good to go, but we can't check me way out here. That is why we are concerned. I am afraid of finding out that I am sterile, and I think Tarzan is too, which is why he refuses to go even for a short trip,” Jane explained sadly.
“What solutions were you talking about though,” Elsa asked in an effort to distract Jane.
“Oh, yeah, well, Daddy said there are new procedures coming out for artificial insemination. Basically, they would take one of my eggs and artificially insert one of Tarzan's sperm into it. It is a really crude method, and I hope in years to come, they'll refine the procedure, but it has a higher success rate than what we have been trying so far.
“Daddy even said something, as he usually gets off topic on most things, about a new process called a sperm bank. So far, it only exists in England and America, but basically, male donors supply semen which is then frozen until a woman pays to have it inserted to try and have a child. Daddy didn't say much about how successful they are or anything else detailed, but you might look into that as a way to have children,” Jane offered.
“Thanks, Jane. We'll have to look into that then. But I have a feeling your family issues with Tarzan go deeper than you two not having kids. Do you want to talk about it? We are as friendly of shoulders as you are likely to find around here,” Moana offered.
“Thank you, but no. I don't want to talk about it right now. Not with three women I just met. Suffice it to say, if you three stick around long enough, and I have a chance to get to know the three of you, then maybe. However, it is getting late, so let me get some food on to cook before we all turn in for the night,” Jane offered.
Elsa, Moana, and Helga all agreed and Jane turned around to pick up a small stew pot and began filling it from what looked like freshly picked vegetables and hunted rodents. Jane asked the trio about their adventures as they all sat and waited for the food. Moana and Elsa were all too eager to share their adventures, even going as far as pulling off their tops and showing the magical tribal tattoos. Helga similarly took off her top to show her own tattoo when the Atlantis mission came up. Jane wondered at them and returned the favor by regaling the group with her own stories of her and Tarzan's adventures in the Congo Jungle.
They never noticed the sullen presence of Tarzan watching from the shadows.
