Moana, Elsa, Maui, and Rapunzel were all watching the bow of the ship break the waves as it slowly turned north north east. All of them, with the exception of Rapunzel, knew full well the dangers that awaited Anna in Lalotai. The long dead giant crab Tomatoa was one of the least dangers. In Lalotai, size and power of the monster were separate, so a very weak monster, like Tomatoa, could become enormous, but one of the most powerful and dangerous creatures was a sloth like creature that wore a mask and had four arms with razor sharp claws on it's fingers but was only the size of a human.
Finally, Elsa let out a frustrated scream and stormed over to look at hers and Moana's boat that was tied down to the deck. Rapunzel came over and put her hand on Elsa's shoulder in sympathy. Elsa looked over at her cousin and her face was grim.
“These big ships don't move fast enough. We won't make it in time. Tangaroa can have Anna in Lalotai weeks before we'll get there. We need to move fast. Punzzie, put our boat in the water and let us go after her ourselves. Besides, we know Lalotai,” Elsa said firmly.
Rapunzel smiled wickedly. “How can I refuse the Queen of Arendelle?” she then turned to the captain who was standing close at hand. “Captain, get that little boat in the water, now. Elsa, Moana, Maui, and myself are going ahead. Meet us at this Lalotai.”
Elsa started. “Punzie, no! Lalotai is too dangerous for you!”
“Elsa, if you remember, I have faced down my own kidnapper who I thought was my mother, bandits, and even the castle guard! All with a frying pan! I can handle this monster place!” Rapunzel boasted.
Maui shook his head as he came to stand next to the pair. “Elsa, give it up. She is like you and Moana. Stubborn and determined to prove herself. Besides, I can't really go as someone has to lead these over-sized whales to the island. All that, and this is a family thing again. You three go. I'll keep an eye on these outsider mortals and make sure they get there safe,” Maui said softly.
Elsa smiled at the big man. “Thank you, Maui. Though, as far as I am concerned, you are family. A big brother maybe, but family none the less. We'll keep Punzzie safe as she won't take no for an answer apparently,” Elsa cast a wry grin at Rapunzel.
Rapunzel smiled brightly, “Then it is settled. Us three girls are going on another adventure!”
Elsa shook her head wryly again. The captain gave them all a glare. Rapunzel held up a hand to stall what she knew he was about to say. He just threw his hands up in the air and began barking orders to have the small boat launched. Rapunzel gave a snarky smile to the others.
“The good Captain can be a little over protective. He shouldn't give us any trouble though. Maui, I am going to let you stay to guide them. But once we get Anna back, we do need to head for Corona. So, we need the ships to be waiting when this adventure is done.
“And on that note, Elsa, is there anything I might need for this?” Rapunzel asked impishly.
“How about the common sense to stay on this ship and wait for us?” Elsa tried again, though the look Rapunzel gave her told her she hadn't had any more success than her first try. “Alright, then a weapon, and clothes that won't encumber you. We'll be doing some climbing when we get there, and likely quite a bit of fighting. Also, our boat isn't exactly a good place for a dress that billowing,” Elsa gestured at Rapunzel's billowing European style dress.
“Alright, I'll go get changed and grab my frying pan!” Rapunzel said imperiously. Before Elsa could stop her, the Captain came up and stopped her.
“You'll take a sword, my Queen! Not a frying pan!” he said firmly.
“You know I don't know how to use one! I have already fought off many things with a frying pan as it is! It is what I know, Captain!” Rapunzel countered.
The Captain didn't say anything more but just glared at the diminutive brunette. Finally, Rapunzel backed down and sighed heavily. “Fine, I'll take a sword,” she said in a defeated tone.
“Good,” was all the Captain said, satisfaction at having won at least one round against Rapunzel. He drew his sabre and handed it to Rapunzel as she hurried to the cabin to change.
Elsa and Moana were busy watching the boat being swung over the rail and into the water, so they didn't notice the Captain come up next to them.
“Please take care of the Queen out there. You two strike me as fully capable of handling yourselves, but she sometimes needs someone to reign her in. She takes too many risks, and she is too important to the alliance to lose. I can't stop any of you, so all I ask is that you bring her back to us alive. We already lost her once. Almost destroyed the kingdom,” he said as they turned to regard him.
Elsa gave a sympathetic smile, “Yeah, I know. We'll keep her safe.”
The Captain nodded then, “And you two need to come back too. We didn't sail half way around the globe on this rescue mission just to have you get lost again, Queen Elsa. As much as the alliance needs Rapunzel, it needs to have you back too, Elsa. You are our best chance of getting everyone to stop fighting. Even if we managed to kill that bastard Hans, everyone is too committed and determined to avenge Arendelle. With you back, there is nothing to avenge, and we can negotiate peace,” his voice was soft.
“We'll have to see how this goes, but I will try,” Elsa promised.
The Captain nodded and moved off. Elsa turned just in time to see Rapunzel come out of the cabin in a dress that was significantly less billowy, the sword in a belt on her hip, and a large pack on her back. Elsa just shook her head. The dress would still hinder her movement, and likely be torn to shreds just being on the little boat. Elsa then had an idea. She didn't even speak as Moana called to her when she darted for the cabin door.
Rapunzel just looked at her strange as she darted inside. Elsa already wore her obsidian edged sword in her skirt belt. Just as Moana carried her shark tooth spear. When she emerged she was carrying a number of hers and Moana's skirts. When the others looked at her, she just winked at them. They all shrugged as a ladder was thrown over the edge so they could climb down to the boat.
The trio were fast to do so, not wanting to waste any time. When they got down onto the boat, Moana took the oar up and pushed the small boat away from the much larger ship. Once they had drifted far enough away, she began to work the sheet and lines, bringing the little craft up to speed at last. As Elsa had thought would happen, she heard several distinct rips as Rapunzel tried to steady herself on the wildly rocking boat. Finally, they had put enough distance between them and the slower ships and Elsa decided to do something about it.
“Okay, Punzzie, strip. Outta what is left of that dress!” Elsa commanded as she and Moana stripped their tops off, letting their large breasts free at last. Rapunzel looked downright offended.
“You want me to get naked? Now? Be like you?” Rapunzel's accusatory tone was sharp.
“Yes, Punzzie. I am going to give you a skirt that will work far better than that dress, or what is left of it! And if you want, you can use my top too! Moana and I are used to just cruising the water naked, or in just skirts. And trust me, it is way better that way. You already look uncomfortably hot in that, too. Just trust me on this Punzzie,” Elsa said sympathetically.
Rapunzel thought about it for a moment, before she finally nodded. She began undressing as Elsa began looking through her vibrantly colored skirts for one she thought would fit Rapunzel's coloration and preferences. Finally, the pale brunette was naked, though shyly trying to cover herself with her hands. Elsa finally selected a bright red and orange colored skirt and walked over to Rapunzel. She showed that it was more like a sheet and wrapped it around Rapunzel's hips. She even demonstrated how to make it hold fast with a few simple folds. Elsa then held out her sailor's shirt Rapunzel had given her the previous night.
Rapunzel looked at it, and then shook her head. It looked like it took force of will to move her hands away from her chest, though a sudden jerk of the boat made it easier as she grabbed for the mast. Moana's laughter gave away that it had been on purpose. Finally, all the shyness in Rapunzel seemed to melt away. She stood up straight and looked out over the water to the slowly receding ships behind them. She nodded to herself and smiled.
Elsa smiled as she took in Rapunzel's figure. She was as soft as Elsa herself had been when she had first come here. Her midriff looked like a little extra fat had settled on her as well. Her small breasts still hadn't gotten any bigger though. And her short brown hair was blowing freely in the wind. Rapunzel seemed to finally be enjoying things. She smiled at Elsa.
“Elsa, thank you! That dress was a bad choice. And while I may not be entirely comfortable with it yet, this skirt beats the dress I was wearing by a large margin. Just how did you become so comfortable in nothing but your skin?” Rapunzel asked.
“Simple Rapunzel, I beat it through her!” Moana boasted.
Elsa and Rapunzel both laughed at that, but then Elsa sobered up fast. “Actually, it was because when the Moana saved me, she did so by stripping me out of the clothes that were pulling me down. I spent the next while completely naked, facing horrors I had never imagined before. It really kinda puts things like shame into perspective. From my new perspective, it is the Europeans and Americans who have the screwed up morals,” Elsa said sadly.
“Maybe we do. Maybe we do. I haven't seen you so happy as you are right now, cousin. When we met you at the village, it was like looking at someone pretending to fit in with us. Now I understand. You found acceptance and a kind of liberation out here. I'll likely never really understand, as I am too bound to European thinking, but you at least have found where you belong. I mean, I am struggling to hold onto this blasted thing, but you stand there like it is completely natural!” Rapunzel laughed a bit.
Elsa was about to respond, but Moana beat her to it. “Rapunzel, you eventually get used to it. I had to myself when both Elsa and I learned to sail with Maui. Though, I should point out, Elsa, you never once seemed to be bothered by the roll of the boat. More than that, when Maui was teaching us, you were much faster on your feet and steadier too. You come by it naturally, love.”
Elsa actually had to think about it a bit, and then she realized, Moana had been right. She shook her head. She then looked at the both of them.
“Yeah, I guess you are right, Moana. I just never thought about it, I guess. And Punzzie, you are right. I have never been happier than I have been the last three years out here. In Europe, I always felt like an outsider, and really kinda stifled. Suffocated even. Out here, I can breath, and let myself go. It has been the time of my life,” Elsa said with feeling.
“I am happy for you, Elsa. And I am sorry that we have to take you back to the place you feel you don't really belong. Maybe you can abdicate to someone better suited and then come back out here and be free again. I wouldn't have a clue who you would choose though. Not many people I'd want to be sitting on Arendelle's throne left,” Rapunzel said sadly.
“It'll be okay, Punzzie. I promise. And so long as I have Moana next to me, anywhere we are is home,” Elsa said as she smiled at her smaller wife.
Rapunzel then gave Elsa a curious look. “Elsa, I know from your coronation that you can create clothes with your magic. Why don't you do that any more?”
“Because these skirts are better suited here. When we get to Arendelle and Corona then I'll conjure something more fitting. But just so you know, my ice magic has been stunted since I came out here. I think it has to do with the different environments. Also, I just like the feel of the cloth on my skin, as opposed to what I created.
Moana smiled back and then she looked seriously at Rapunzel, “Hey, as long as we are dealing with this, Rapunzel, why don't we teach you how to sail like us? You never know, Elsa and I might get the crap beaten out of us bad enough you might have to pilot the boat sometime. Three Wayfinders is better than two!”
Rapunzel's nodded enthusiastically. She let go of the mast as Elsa and Moana began their lessons. As dark fell, they began showing her how to navigate by the stars, and Rapunzel seemed to have a definite gift for it. They had to prompt Rapunzel to stay awake though, as the small woman wasn't used to going days without sleep yet. They talked for hours on end, sharing their adventures and all the islands they had scouted.
Four days passed quickly, and Rapunzel was seeming to finally get the hang of piloting and sailing the little boat. Elsa was up the mast that morning, looking out into the rising sun. She squinted against the gaining light and she finally saw it. It was just to their east and in the sun. The island entrance to Lalotai. Elsa felt a wave of memories flow over her as she saw it. Pleasant memories.
She smiled as she landed back on the deck. She hurried to the tiller and helped Moana turn it to the east. Elsa kissed her wife passionately, and Rapunzel just giggled at that. They all squinted against the rising sun until at last it was high enough that they could see the ever closer spire of stone that was the entrance. They pulled the little boat up to the stone spire and tied it off. Moana began to climb as Elsa turned to Rapunzel.
“This is part of why you wanted to wear that skirt over that dress. We have to climb to the peak of this thing. The entrance is at the top. Last time we were here, it was Maui who opened it. We'll have to see if we can mange it too,” Elsa said.
Rapunzel smiled as she reached into the pack in the boat and pulled out her iron skillet. Elsa laughed as she noted it was the same one from her many adventures before she found out she was the princess of Corona. The various scratches on the iron showed where swords had been deflected by the heavy iron. Elsa sobered fast, however as she looked behind Rapunzel at the rising figure in the water.
Tangaroa spoke clearly, without the usual watery gurgle. “You have arrived, and I have a gift for the one who needn't have come, but did so anyway. I have been watching, and while you may never be of this place, as Elsa and Moana are, you have shown greater respect for our ways than any other has yet.”
Tangaroa reached out and dribbled a bit onto the iron skillet. Then he dripped a bit onto Rapunzel herself, and she briefly glowed. When the light faded Tangaroa spoke again.
“You'll find what those are when the time comes. Until then, make haste. The obstinate one has found her way into the lair of an old enemy long gone, now occupied by far worse than Tomatoa,” and then the ocean god simply splashed back into the sea again.
Elsa groaned, “Gods, damn it! Tomatoa?! That crab is still haunting us!”
“At least we know where we are going and don't have to search all over the fucking place for her! Though, that bit about worse than Tomatoa has me worried, so let's hurry, Island Lilly!” Moana called from above.
Rapunzel looked a question at Elsa as the pair began to follow her up. Finally, she couldn't take it any more as Elsa wasn't forthcoming about it, and asked, “What did she mean by 'Island Lilly?'”
Elsa moved for the next ledge, “Her pet name for me. Her little way of affection,” Elsa huffed as she made a short jump to the next hand holds.
“Oh, I gotcha! So, what are we expecting down there?” Rapunzel asked as she pulled herself up to the next ledge.
“Just about anything, really. Just remember, Rapunzel, down in Lalotai, the big things aren't necessarily the strong ones, and the small ones can be far more deadly than you can imagine. Size is meaningless in Lalotai,” Moana called down as she moved to her next grip.
“Also, watch your first step, it is a long drop. Lalotai exists below the ocean. We will basically be falling into it. I'll try to make it so that you can land safely, Punzzie, but if you have any skill as an acrobat, it is just easier to grab a vine and let yourself down into the landing spot. Hitting the ground hurts a bit,” Elsa said as she pulled herself up to another ledge.
“Elsa, remember, I used to use my hair for all kinds of acrobatic stunts, and even getting into and out of a tower! How do you think I learned to climb like this?” Rapunzel shot back as she climbed up to the next set of holds.
“Alright, fair point. Just be careful and try to do as we do, Rapunzel,” Moana called down.
The group continued their climb, stopping on ledges to catch their breath and rest. They didn't talk much more as their climb took them above the low hanging clouds. Finally, however, they reached the top and Rapunzel whistled as she looked around at the ocean around the stone pillar.
“We should all probably have slept before coming here,” Rapunzel commented.
“Punzzie, it wouldn't have made a difference. Both Moana and I are used to being Wayfinders. We spend whole weeks awake. We only rest when we hit land or absolutely have to. And in that latter situation, we trade off. 'A real Wayfinder never sleeps, so they actually get where they are going,' as Maui once put it. In short, you get used to it,” Elsa said as they looked around.
The entrance face was still mostly clear of dust and dirt, though three years had deposited some on it. Elsa looked at Moana and shrugged indicating that she wasn't sure how to do it. Moana nodded and took a stand on the nose of the giant face. Elsa took Rapunzel's hand and pulled her to the lower lip. Elsa nodded, and Moana did Maui's chant and then took a giant leap into the air, and came down hard on the nose, slamming it with both fists. For a moment it seemed as though nothing happened, and then the mouth slowly opened, revealing the long shaft down.
“Okay, Punzzie, don't go outside the rings, and hold your breath when you hit the water. We are going to be falling for almost a minute or so,” Elsa explained.
Moana jumped in even as Rapunzel nodded. Then Elsa leaped in, quickly followed by Rapunzel as the mouth snapped shut again. The trio fell through the air until they hit the water and then they followed each other down through the glowing rings. Moana burst from the water into open air and grabbed for the first vine, using it to swing her way down to the ground, for a three point landing.
Elsa came out next, and managed to stick her landing, only bouncing a little as her feet touched ground. Rapunzel on the other hand managed to grab the vine, but rather than let go and swing to the ground, she held on, leaving her suspended above the other two. Elsa and Moana shook their heads. Elsa looked up at her cousin.
“Punzzie, let go! You'll be fine! It isn't that far of a drop left!” Elsa called out.
Rapunzel sucked in a breath and then let go, falling to the ground. Elsa used her ice magic to create a small snow mound and Rapunzel fell into it, landing safely, though she was shivering as she worked her way out of it. She looked a thanks at Elsa, who just nodded and smiled.
“Everyone has an issue the first time. Don't worry about it, Rapunzel. You should have seen Elsa drop in like she did the first time!” Moana laughed sympathetically.
“Yeah, don't remind me of that,” Elsa said with mock seriousness.
All three laughed and took a moment to get their bearings. Finally, Moana pointed off in a direction. “It should be over there. I just hope it isn't a bunch of sloth monsters that have her. Tomatoa's cave doesn't have a lot of great hiding spots.”
The group nodded and began walking. Rapunzel was staring wide eyed and in awe of the vibrant colors and otherworldly weirdness of the realm. Then she had a thought and looked at Elsa.
“Elsa, just what kinds of monsters live down here?” she asked.
“All kinds. Eels, crabs, sloths, bats, carnivorous plants, lizards, and so on. Seriously, nothing down here is 'safe' so be on your guard,” Moana said as she put her spear into a defensive posture.
Rapunzel stuck close to Elsa as the trio walked the short distance. Eight eyed bats flew past, startling the small group. When they were gone, the group got up and continued on. The walk was short as they came to a giant conch shell that rose up to poke the tip into the ocean above. Rapunzel wore a look of awe as she saw the massive thing, and the number of shiny objects scattered around the area. Elsa and Moana looked at the mess and wore grim looks. Whatever did this didn't value shiny objects like Tomatoa did.
The three peeked around the corner and what they saw shocked them. Anna was tied to a pole in the center of the cave and her dress was shreds hanging off her. She looked to be unconscious, and had a number of small cuts all over her body. Strangely there were no monsters anywhere to be seen, which worried the girls. They pulled back and did a small huddle.
“Alright, she looks alright, but this feels like a trap. Which means they are expecting someone. Not necessarily us, but someone,” Moana said seriously.
“Yeah, which means even if we try to sneak in, we are going to be stepping into the trap. We might as well just go in there and see what is waiting. Tomatoa liked to burrow, so there is no knowing what might be waiting in there,” Elsa pointed out.
“Then let's just get it on with. Three of us can handle anything!” Rapunzel boasted with confidence.
Both Moana and Elsa chuckled but then sobered. This was not going to be easy, no matter how they came at it. The trio just nodded and then strode boldly into the cave, weapons at the ready. They hurried to the post where Anna was tied, and Anna seemed to stir.
“Anna, be still. We'll get you out of here,” Elsa promised as she went for the ties.
“Elsa,” Anna's voice was soft, “It's a trap. Get out. There are too many.”
Elsa didn't get a chance to reply as a war cry went up and out of the shadows came dozens of monsters wearing elaborate shaman masks. All of them were a bit shorter than a human, but they had tails and feet like monkeys. And all of them carried spears. Elsa and Moana put their weapons up in defense, and put Anna and Rapunzel behind them.
“Lookie what we captured! More humans! Girl was right! Girl was right! They came! They came!” the creatures hooted.
Then one in a more detailed and elaborate mask came through the ranks of the monkey monsters and lifted it's mask showing the face of a baboon. It smiled a toothy smile that was nasty and predatory.
“Tribe need meat. But cursed meat is no good! Good to see un-cursed meat come! Now tribe can eat!” the monkey monster said.
“You'll find us more than you can chew. Let my sister go and us leave, and we won't exterminate the lot of you,” Elsa growled back.
“No! Meat stays! Cursed meat not wanted! But tribe must eat!” the monkey monster hooted back.
“Have it your way,” Moana said as she inhaled and spewed forth a fountain of fire. Elsa was quick to put a curve of ice in front of the group. The monkey monsters seemed to back away, and then they charged. Rapunzel blocked and parried spears with her frying pan. Moana dodged inside the reach of those spears, even while slashing out with her own. And Elsa's obsidian edged sword flashed and severed spear tips and limbs with equal abandon.
The fight was not in the girl's favor though, as Moana took a jab to her leg that put her down on the ground. Rapunzel was quick to respond and inspect the wound, even as Moana and Elsa worked to hold back the tide of monsters. Another quick burst of ice shards from Elsa drove them back just long enough for Rapunzel to put her hands on Moana's calf. Then her hands began to glow with what looked like sunlight and the wound began to close instantly.
Rapunzel was shocked, but didn't relent. There would be time to contemplate this new power after the fight was ended. Finally the wound was closed and Moana stood and tested her weight on the leg again. She nodded and then launched herself back into the fray. Elsa was the next to take an injury to the arm, and Rapunzel was there quick with her healing magic. And when one of the monkey monsters managed to get around behind the group and got close to Rapunzel, she batted it squarely in the face with the frying pan even as it tried to slash her with long claws. The hit sent the monster flying to punch a hole in the wall of the shell cave. Rapunzel had a brief moment of wonder before Moana herself came flying back, shortly followed by Elsa.
The pair hit the ground hard, and Rapunzel immediately went to work healing what looked like two extremely heavy hits. Then from among the remaining monsters came a larger one, with four arms and looked like a giant gorilla with half a mask on it's face. The monsters began hooting and chanting as the big monkey monster bore down on the trio. Rapunzel barely had a moment to react as the heavy fist came in to crush her, only to be blocked by the simple frying pan, with a resounding “pong” from the hit.
The look on the monster's face was of utter confusion as the frying pan stopped what should have been a crippling hit and sent Rapunzel flying. Without hesitating, Rapunzel swept the pan back and then swung with all her might and the “pong” was resounding as the hit sent the giant monkey monster slamming through the shell wall again. The other monkey monsters seemed to hesitate and back up at last.
Rapunzel was quick to apply her healing magic to the injuries of Elsa and Moana, who were back on their feet shortly. The three set their weapons and stared down the tribe of monkey monsters. The monkey monsters looked at each other, then to the many who were dead on the ground, and then they all screamed and scattered as they fled the cave. The fight was at last ended, and seemed to have taken forever.
“That was not good. That was too many. Punzzie, that was a good time to discover that healing magic again!” Elsa said with feeling.
“Yeah, I guess that god of yours figured we'd need it,” Rapunzel said with equal feeling.
“Tangaroa is wise,” Moana said philosophically. “Still, we need to see to your sister, Island Lilly.”
Elsa nodded and the group turned to Anna. The monkey monsters words echoed in Elsa's mind. “Cursed meat” they had called her. That made Elsa wonder. She lifted Anna's head up to meet her gaze, and a green flash was visible in the redhead's hazel eyes. Elsa nodded.
“Alright, are you going to behave if we let you off this post?” Elsa asked, though she was watching Anna's eyes intently.
Again the flash of green crossed her eyes, “Elsa, you let me down from here if you know what is good for you! God will see me through this and that you and your whore and my traitorous cousin are all punished for this offense!”
Rapunzel stepped up, and again that flash of green crossed Anna's eyes as Elsa watched. “I am Queen of Corona, and you are just a Queen Regent in trust for Elsa's inevitable return to the throne of Arendelle. You will show us respect, cousin!” Rapunzel's tone was firm and cross.
“I do not bow to you! You may be my cousin, Punzzie, but I see even you are falling to these savages' heathen ways! Cut me down from here right now or the Alliance is finished, you whore!” Anna spat.
Elsa intervened and pulled Rapunzel and Moana to one side. Her voice was a soft whisper, “I think Anna is under a curse. When she was really out of it, she seemed back to normal as the monkey monsters were talking. Now, every time one of us speaks to her or her to us, there is a flash of green in her eyes.”
“I never noticed before! That would explain so much! Anna was riding a ragged edge before Hans' shitty stunt, it was like she was feeling stressed or something. I just thought it was the pressure of trying to end the war and manage your kingdom that was causing it. But her break was just so sudden, it caught us all off guard,” Rapunzel whispered back.
“I have an idea Island Lilly. Just follow my lead,” Moana said loudly enough that Anna could hear. Elsa raised an eyebrow but nodded.
Moana walked back over to Anna and slapped her hard across the face as she hung from the post. “You'll not talk to my slave, Island Lilly, like that ever again, you bitch! I know my gods are greater than yours, because I have met and spoken to mine!”
Anna opened her mouth to scream at Moana again, again with the green flash in her eyes, but Moana just grabbed her by the jaw and looked her dead in the eyes. “And what proof do you have of your god? A book from what I heard, and a priest. That is all! Your beliefs aren't even your own! You got them from others!”
The green flash was flashing more rapidly across Anna's eyes as she stared with hatred at Moana. Elsa walked up to her and grabbed the little silver cross that hung around Anna's throat and tore it off and held it up to Anna's face. The green flashes were almost solid with how rapid they came now.
“Tell me, Anna! What did he say to you to make you believe shit that you never did, and once swore to never allow into our kingdom? What lies or threats did that priest use on you to make you believe that hatred was the way of things? What evil curse did he put you under to make you hate me so?” Elsa pleaded.
The green light was solid now and Anna's eyes seemed bewildered. It was then that Elsa noted that the closer the cross was to Anna the brighter and firmer the light shone. Elsa took the cross and stepped back from the struggling redhead and froze the silver in her hand so brittle that when she threw it at the cave wall it shattered into minuscule fragments. In that moment, the green light in Anna's eyes flashed once, twice, and then was gone.
Anna was blinking hard, shaking her head and seemed more disoriented than ever. “Elsa, where am I? What are you doing here?” Anna's voice was soft.
“Anna, you were under a curse! What can you remember?” Rapunzel asked.
“Punzzie? I was in Arendelle, I was meeting with an emissary from, I don't remember, and then everything just goes black. What are you wearing and who is the brown girl?” Anna seemed to be coming back to her senses now as her voice became stronger.
“Anna do you remember anything from the last four years?” Elsa prompted before Rapunzel could.
“Four years? Elsa, you just sailed a month ago. How are you back already? And what are you wearing?!” Anna seemed genuinely shocked for a moment.
Elsa just smiled, “Anna! You don't remember anything do you?!”
“No, I don't, and you are avoiding the question, Elsa! Would one of you three half naked girls please cut me down and explain what in Odin's Hall is going on here?” Anna asked as she suddenly realized she couldn't pull her hands down from the post.
“Hold on,” Elsa said as she took her obsidian edged sword and deftly cut the ropes.
Once Anna was able to lower her arms she pulled Elsa into a hug. “I am happy to see you back, Elsa, but where are we, and what has been going on? Everything goes blank after that Emissary was announced in the throne room.”
“Anna, it is an extremely long story, and covers about four years of time. But we shouldn't be talking about it here. This place is too dangerous. Moana, we need to get to a geyser and get out of Lalotai,” Elsa said firmly.
“Not so fast, Island Lilly. I want to be sure first. Let's all have a seat and talk. Four years is a long time for magic like that to dig it's way into someone's heart,” Moana countered.
“Alright, then let's go have a seat away from the entrance. Moana, you keep watch in case anything comes in,” Rapunzel asked.
Moana nodded as they helped Anna down from the pole and over to a rock so she could lean against it. Elsa held her gaze as she relayed the last four years to her sister. Elsa had to hold up her hand every time Anna wanted to ask a question so that she could get the explanation out of the way. Anna listened intently, but there were no green flashes in her eyes. Then Rapunzel relayed everything that Anna and the Alliance had been involved in and the look of pure horror on Anna's face was telling. When they were done, Elsa and Rapunzel sat back so that Anna could process what she had just been told. She shook her head in disbelief.
“Elsa, Punzzie, I don't know how much of that I can believe! Even cursed, how could I have been so compelled to do such things?! And more, I have so many questions for you, Elsa, it isn't funny, but those need to wait. I have to fix what I did. Even if I was cursed, there is no excuse for it! And I want to apologize for anything I might have said to the two of you since!” Anna exclaimed in a rush.
“Anna, it wasn't you. Someone was using you like a puppet,” Elsa said softly.
“Two guesses who,” Rapunzel sarcastically pointed out.
“Hans will get what is coming to him. For now, we need to get out of Lalotai. I didn't see any more green in her eyes, so I think we are safe,” Elsa said, relieved.
“About that, I am glad you lot finished up, because we have company,” Moana said warily.
Anna, Elsa, and Rapunzel turned and saw the giant boar with tribal tattoos all over it and four great big tusks and four eyes staring at them. Elsa stood up slowly hefting her sword in her hand, and Rapunzel was slow to rise with her frying pan.
“Anna, stay out of the way. We'll deal with this,” Elsa said softly as the trio squared off against the monstrous beast.
Anna just nodded and ducked behind a nearby rock. The giant boar paid her no mind and instead seemed to be sizing the three women up. Finally the great creature snorted, and spines on it's back rose into the air.
“Well, I suppose the monkeys were right. Three demigoddesses all standing here. I owe Maui a thing or two, but I guess you three can be appetizers,” the boar said.
“And you are?” Elsa asked.
“I am Pua. And you are lunch,” the boar said as it began pawing the ground.
“You'll find us a bit of a mouthful,” Moana said cautiously.
“We shall see, small one,” Pua roared as he charged.
Rapunzel went left, Elsa right, and Moana charged under the giant pig before it could gore any of them with it's tusks. Moana had slid under the charging beast at an awkward angle and so didn't have a shot with her spear. Elsa narrowly avoided a swipe of the tusks and so missed her shot with her sword. Rapunzel failed to connect with her frying pan as the beast suddenly veered right to pursue Elsa.
The three grouped up again as the boar readied another charge. Again the trio split and again nothing connected, the boar proving too nimble and capable. Elsa growled in frustration as the hulking beast evaded them a third time. She and the other two were studying the beast's movements, but it was proving difficult.
When it came in on a fourth charge, this time Rapunzel went under, with Elsa to the left and Moana to the right. This time, Moana scored a small cut on the beast's right flank with her spear, though none of the others did. The beast seemed to not even notice the wound.
“This isn't working,” Elsa pointed out as the trio deftly dodged another charge.
“I have an idea,” Moana said as she lined up with the boar again.
On Pua charged at the girls, only this time Moana held her ground longer, and used her spear to pole vault up into the air and onto the beast's neck. Pua screeched in rage as Moana dug her spear into the pig's neck flesh, but then it shook violently, throwing Moana from it's back. Moana hit a rock hard, and was struggling to get up. Pua sensed her momentary weakness and started charging her again.
However, Elsa wasn't about to let it, as she froze the floor of the cave with ice and then spawned a wall of ice spears between Pua and Moana. Moana dove to the left just as the giant boar tried to stop on the ice and only succeeded in slipping right into the wall of icicles. Pua squealed in pain as it impaled itself on the ice, but it was far from finished.
Pua extracted himself from the wall of ice, bloody from multiple impalings, and bore down on Elsa. This time the pig was ready for the ice, and managed to keep from sliding into a second wall of icicles. However, the group noted that the pig's movement was less precise and slowed, partly from wounds, and partly from trying to move on ice.
“Elsa, I can't stand on this,” Moana said.
“Neither can I,” Rapunzel confirmed.
Elsa just nodded, “just focus on keeping out of his way. Let me deal with him.”
Moana and Rapunzel nodded and just kept dodging even as Elsa would use the ice like normal ground. She herself did not have any trouble with her footing. However, the pig wasn't so fortunate and it began sliding around erratically. Moana had to dodge the beast twice, and a sold “pong” showed the moment when Rapunzel finally managed to connect with her frying pan. The pig slammed into one of Elsa's wall of icicles and then just lay still. Elsa approached cautiously, but Pua was quite dead at last.
“Finally,” Moana sighed in relief. “Island Lilly, get rid of this ice, please.”
Elsa nodded and began focusing her will to melt the ice. It only took a moment and then the cave was back to normal. Moana smiled at her wife and then helped Rapunzel up from where she landed among the rocks from her rebound from Pua on the ice. Anna came out from behind the rock she was hiding behind and just stared in wonder at the three obviously powerful women.
The trio all started as Anna cleared her throat. “Um, so when do I get my super powers? Last I checked, Punzzie didn't have any magic, and now she has a magic frying pan?”
Elsa just smiled, “Anna, I don't know, it'll depend on if the gods are feeling generous or not. But for now, let's get out of this place. This is our third battle in here, and I for one don't want a fourth.”
“Agreed,” the other three said in unison.
The quartet moved out of the cave, and immediately had to duck a swarm of eight eyed bats that swooped overhead. Anna looked out over Lalotai with obvious wonder. Elsa smirked and pointed her up, and Anna started as she noticed the ocean over head. Elsa held up a hand to stall the question, and waved everyone over to a geyser opening.
“I guess we got a couple minutes before this thing goes off. Anna, when the geyser goes off, hang on to me, okay?” Elsa prodded.
“Alright, is that how we are getting out of this place?” Anna asked.
“Yes, Anna, it is,” Moana replied curtly.
“What is your problem?” Anna demanded.
“I know it was a curse that was making you like that, but you have a lot to atone for just on Lani Tai,” Moana curtly replied as she kept her watch for anything that might happen by.
“I know, but I can't remember any of it! I am sorry for everything, I really am,” Anna said sadly.
“That is a start. But you need to apologize to Chief Tui, our father,” Moana said firmly.
“Wait, what do you mean 'our' father? Who are you including in that?” Anna asked confused.
“Me, Anna. Moana and I are married. We have been for about two years now,” Elsa said dryly.
“Wait! Hold on! Elsa, that wasn't in your explanation a bit ago,” Anna's voice trailed off as the shock of it wore off and her mind engaged.
“Ladies, we'll have to continue this top side. Hold your breath!” Moana cried as the ground began to rumble below them.
The geyser erupted and the four women were shot up with the water. They rode it as it forced them up through the ocean ceiling and then up through the ocean. They broke the surface and flew a little ways into the air. They came down into the shallow water near the island where three of them had entered Lalotai. As they pulled themselves up onto the beach, Anna realized that her dress had been blown mostly off and she desperately tried to cover herself.
“Anna, hold on. Let me go get a skirt for you to wear. And we have a top if you want it,” Elsa said as she turned to head quickly to the boat. “The rest of you stay here. Four people is pushing the limit on our little boat, and we have to wait for Maui and the Corona and Arendelle ships.”
“Elsa, I would prefer a top please, no matter what it is,” Anna replied as she blushed deeply as she watched Elsa walk off.
“I don't like it when she leaves, but I love to watch her go,” Moana said wistfully as she watched Elsa put a little extra sway in her hips for her.
Anna just quirked an eyebrow as she watched Elsa walk off and the look on Moana's face. Finally, she shook herself and gave Moana a hard look. “Hey, that is my sister! You two may be married, but geeze, you don't have to be so obvious about it!”
Moana gave herself a little shake and glared at Anna, “And what have you to say about it Fire Hair?! Our lives are our own!”
“It is just, I don't know, I never figured Elsa for a lizzie. Nothing wrong with it, it is just hard for me to process is all,” Anna admitted.
“Tell me about it,” Rapunzel commented as she came up next to Anna and put her arm on the bigger woman's shoulder. “I am still getting used to it myself. I had a bit of an idea where Elsa's tastes were going when she left, but even I didn't see this coming.”
“Yeah, well, we didn't plan on it, initially. Just, one thing lead to another, and now we are married. Though, I do want to change the subject. I feel this is something you and Island Lilly should talk about, Fire Hair,” there was no condescension in Moana's voice now, just awkwardness.
Anna giggled a bit at the awkward islander, but nodded. “Yeah, I think it is. Wait, Moana, am I seeing things, or did your tattoo just move?!”
Moana looked at her chest where the living tattoo came out of it's panel and pulled in a new tattoo showing a battle with the monkeys. Then it ran to another spot and pulled in a tattoo of the battle with the giant pig. Moana chuckled.
“Yeah, she does that. Kinda like a conscience for me. Elsa has her own too,” Moana said as she showed off the new tattoos.
Anna stared in wonder at the little animated tattoo Moana. The little Moana glared briefly at Anna, but then nodded like it had made a decision and then waved happily. Anna just waved at it, and smiled. Her look was that of wonder.
“I knew there was magic in the world, Elsa is proof of that, but I never imagined anything like that!” Anna blurted out.
Moana chuckled. “Fair enough. We come from different worlds, Fire Hair. Elsa has found a home here, but she took time to understand some things. These tattoos are all magical. They show the victories Elsa and I have won, often together, though I had a battle of my own before I saved her from drowning. So I have two tattoos she doesn't. Though, I try not to rub it in. The kakamora were hardly worth it.”
“Kakamora?” Anna and Rapunzel asked simultaneously.
“Little goblins that wear coconuts for armor. There were a few hundred of the pests, on three boats, but I wasn't in a mood at the time to deal with them. I went after an objective, this really stupid chicken, Hai Hai, who had swallowed the Heart of Te'Fiti. When I got the chicken back, I ran for my boat to escape. Maui had to do the piloting then, as I hadn't learned how to sail yet. Needless to say, Maui was a bit stubborn about teaching, but after we beat and killed Tomatoa, he finally started teaching me and Elsa how to sail,” Moana explained.
“I never figured Elsa would learn how to sail,” Anna said in wonder.
“Another thing you should talk to your sister about, Fire Hair. Though, she should be back with a skirt and top for you soon,” Moana said sincerely.
Anna nodded. “Alright, I can see Elsa and I are going to be talking at some length. Moana, I want to go to your island and apologize to your family first thing, then we can head back to Arendelle.”
“Cuz, that may not be feasible. I have a sinking suspicion as to what may have occurred in our absence, particularly now that I am thinking about who likely cursed you,” Rapunzel commented uncomfortably.
At that moment Elsa came jogging up the beach, a skirt and one of the shirts from the ship in her hand. She smiled at Anna and held out a blue and green skirt that had a sea scene on it. Anna looked at the fabric and smiled brightly. She was quick to strip out of her rags, or what was left of them, and Elsa helped her wrap the skirt around her waist. She then handed Anna the shirt and she gratefully put it on.
Rapunzel let them finish dressing Anna, but then brought the discussion back to the topic at hand. “Okay, now that Elsa is back, as I was saying, I am afraid that Arendelle might already be in Hans' hands. Not the Southern Isles, mind you, but Hans'. He had cursed Anna so that he could control her. He made her do terrible things that is going to make the remaining people more inclined to follow him when he returns victorious from this mission. After all, how could Hans be any worse than what Anna was? And without Elsa, there would be no one to contend his claim.”
“Yeah, well, he is going to have to contend with me. I'll see to that!” Elsa said firmly.
“I don't know how I'll make it up to the people though, Elsa. I may have been cursed, but the people aren't going to care. You may have to make an example of me, just to appease them,” Anna whispered fearfully.
“I would never willingly or knowingly hurt you, Anna. You are my sister! We'll find a way to make the people understand that it wasn't you running that horror show. It was Hans using you like a puppet. I am sure our people will understand,” Elsa said soothingly as she put her hand on Anna's shoulder.
“Thanks Elsa,” Anna whispered quietly. She then noticed Elsa's magical tattoo showing her sympathy as well, and nodding. Anna smiled at that.
“Well, now that that is out of the way, what do we do until the ships get here? I mean, we could take the little boat back, even if four people is pushing it,” Rapunzel suggested.
“No, Punzie, we can't. The ocean is a big place, and it would be easy to miss the ships, even back tracking the way we came. We'll just have to wait until Maui gets them here,” Elsa said firmly.
“So, um, who is Maui?” Anna asked tentatively.
“Demi-God of the Wind and Sea, hero to all. And our best friend. You'll know him when you see him,” Moana promised.
“Alright girls, let's get a camp fire going. We just need to gather the firewood, and Moana can light it,” Elsa pronounced in her best queenly form, causing the others to giggle.
“Yes, your majesty,” Anna teased, and Elsa was relieved to see that teasing side back.
The four women went about collecting the firewood and they set up a small camp on the beach. Elsa and Moana offered their sleeping mats they used when on islands to Rapunzel and Anna. Both of them accepted, but only after Elsa forced the issue. Moana lit the camp fire with her fire breath and then hurried to bring the small boat around to the beach. Once that was done, the four women laid out under the stars and Moana and Elsa broke out a small cache of bananas to share among them.
Rapunzel then looked at Moana and Elsa cuddling up together. “So, um, not to trash the mood or anything, but am I a demigoddess now too?”
Moana looked at Rapunzel for a moment then shook her head. “No, I don't think so. I think Tangaroa only gave you some powers, not made you a demigoddess. Still, I'd have to confirm that with him, but he isn't here just now.”
As if summoned by Moana's comment, the sea rose up and spoke in it's usual watery voice. “I did give her some powers, but she is not of these islands as you and Elsa are, dear Moana. She may earn full demigoddess status at some later time, but she has not done so to my satisfaction yet.”
“I did far less than she did, and you gave me powers?” Elsa asked.
“I did so only because your heart was already of these islands as much as your home island in the cold northern seas. I knew you belonged here in full, so I made you a part of this place,” Tangaroa replied simply.
“Whelp, there you have it, Rapunzel! Not a demigoddess, yet!” Moana laughed as Tangaroa splashed back into the ocean.
“Ladies, not that that wasn't fascinating, but I think we all need to get to sleep. We can discuss exactly what that was in the morning,” Anna prodded with a big yawn.
The four women bedded down next to the camp fire, with Moana and Elsa cuddled up together. The night would pass peacefully, with nothing interrupting them. In the morning they set about collecting more provisions and generally looking to waiting on the large Corona ships. Elsa and Moana did have to explain exactly who Tangaroa was then. It would be two more days before the lumbering ships came into view and the girls waved excitedly to them.
Anna turned to Elsa as the ships began lowering a boat into the water. “So, are you ready to go home after this wild adventure?”
“Honestly, Anna, no. I found my home. It is out here in the sea, with Moana and our tribe. Arendelle never really felt like home, and now I know why,” Elsa said sadly as she looked at the incoming boat.
“Hey, enough of that, Island Lilly! You have two homes, and you'll see both more than you think! Particularly if I have anything to say about it!” Moana demanded.
“Yes, Mistress,” Elsa giggled at the smaller brown woman, her mood instantly lightened.
Anna raised an eyebrow, but didn't say anything more as the boat beached and Rapunzel's flag captain stepped out and surveyed the small group of women. He raised an eyebrow as he noted Rapunzel's lack of a top, and she suddenly squeaked as she ducked behind Anna when she realized what he was looking at. Elsa giggled a bit and then waved him up.
“And what in the name of all the gods of land and sea has been going on? Where is the Queen's dress and top?!” he demanded as he stepped up to the group.
“Her dress was destroyed, as I figured it would be, but she is the one who decided to not wear a top,” Elsa pronounced.
“Alright, then we need to get her, and you all, into some proper clothes! Preferably before the Arendelle ships get here and that priest pitches a fit!” The Captain grumped.
“They weren't right behind you?” Rapunzel asked, bewildered.
“No. They seemed to be having trouble with a current of some kind. They were making slower head way than we were. Not that I'll shed a tear for that lot,” the Captain audibly growled.
“Wait, what priest? And why all the hard feelings for Arendelle's ships? Does this have more to do with the four years I can't remember?” Anna asked seriously.
The captain gave Anna a hard look, “You don't remember the last four years? All the, um, things, you have done, as Queen Regent?” the Captain asked seriously, though tentatively, as though testing her.
“No, I don't. I was under some kind of curse, or that is what Elsa said,” Anna huffed.
“Then my apologies, Princess Anna,” the Captain heaved a sigh of relief. “I am sure there are many things your sister and cousin have had to bring you up to speed on. And if you were cursed, then I am sorry that you had to hear those things.
“We may not want to let her return to the Arendelle ships. She might get cursed again. I wouldn't put it past that vile priest,” the Captain said as he turned to the others.
“I don't plan to let her return to those ships,” Rapunzel said flatly as she put her arms protectively around her cousin. “We just got her back, so I don't plan to let them have her again.”
“Good. Now, ladies, let's get you all into something decent before the crew sees too much,” the Captain said as he waved to the boat.
“Of course, Captain, but don't forget Elsa and Moana's boat. That thing was fun to ride on!” Rapunzel stated enthusiastically.
“I can imagine your Majesty. Alright, I'll see to it we get it loaded. Maybe by then we'll see the Arendelle ships and we can link back up. We'll need them if we run across any Concordant fleets, particularly if Admiral Hans is out here already,” the Captain said sternly, trying to remind the impetuous young queen of the danger they were still in.
“I understand, Captain. At any rate, we are ready. But other than adding a top and boots, I think I'll keep this skirt on for a while. At least until we get close to the cold end of South America. This thing is damned comfortable in this heat,” Rapunzel said impishly.
“That is acceptable for all of you, I guess. Just add tops and boots please, that is all I ask,” the captain remarked in a resigned but relieved tone.
“Yes, Captain,” Rapunzel's enthusiasm never faltered.
It only took a few minutes for them to get back aboard the ship, and they were shocked to see Maui in a shirt and long trousers. He gave Rapunzel an irritated look, but then gave a hard look to Anna. She seemed to wither under his regard and hid behind Elsa as the big man strode up to the group.
“They made me wear this stuff. I am only doing it out of respect for you, Rapunzel, though I see you have been adapting to our island lifestyles,” Maui's booming voice was even.
“Elsa and Moana were great teachers. As for Anna, don't worry, she is back to her normal self. Apparently, she was under a curse and no one noticed until Elsa looked her in the eyes, which was something none of us had done before,” Rapunzel puffed out her chest to meet the big man.
Maui raised an eyebrow as he looked on at Anna, but then broke out into a deep laugh and smiled, “So serious! I may not like this stuff, but it helps to keep these mortals off my back! But I am glad to know it was a curse she was under! Your people will understand too, Moana and Elsa. Come on, the food here sucks, but at least it is hot!”
Elsa smiled, and shook her head. “No, first we have to go put some clothes on. The Captain said we needed to dress decently, like you.”
“Then hurry up! I want to talk when you are done. Find me at the bow,” Maui said as he walked towards the bow then.
The four women hurried to the cabin where Rapunzel immediately began going through her foot locker looking for decent tops for all the girls. She was surprised to find four pairs of boots also waiting. Apparently the Captain had had the foresight of a prophet.
The boots almost fit perfectly, but well enough for sailing. Rapunzel managed to find a quartet of tops she had in her foot locker, and handed them out. Anna was grateful to change out of the poor quality cloth shirt and into a fine cotton shirt. Once the four of them were reasonably dressed, they hurried out to the bow where Maui was waiting. Rapunzel noted that the Captain was directing the loading of Elsa and Moana's little outrigger.
“Okay, Maui, what do you want to talk about?” Elsa prodded as the group met with him.
“I didn't want to tell your captain this while we were sailing here, but I saw that Hans guy turn his ships away and start sailing south south east. He was putting up a lot of sails too. The Arendelle ships are only about a few hours behind us, but they should be here soon. Though, just prior to this, I noted some birds flying back and forth between Anna's flagship and that Hans' ship.
“Oh, and your Captain has been most helpful explaining how a number of things work. Like weapons and your 'Navy' as he called it,” Maui said.
“That is troubling, but not unexpected Maui. He probably knows we broke his curse, if it works like I think it did. So he is rushing back to try and beat us to Arendelle, but if his ships are faster, then we might be too late. I am more worried about the Arendelle ships at this point,” Elsa said flatly.
“What do you mean, Island Lilly?” Moana asked as she came up and put her arms around her blonde worry wart of a wife.
“I mean, I don't know which side those two ships are really going to be on when they get here. Tangaroa might have been impeding them for a reason, and even still, the birds going between those ships and Hans might mean they are actually working for Hans now,” Elsa pointed out.
Rapunzel looked worried now, and Anna as well. Maui looked at the girls and the smiled. “Well, if they want to cause trouble, they are going to find more than they can handle. We've three demigods here, and from what Tangaroa told me three days ago, Rapunzel got some powers of her own now. I think we can get these lumbering whales where we need to go.”
Maui had no sooner spoken when the look out in the crows nest shouted down that he had spotted the two Arendelle ships coming. Everyone hurried to the rail, but the ships were still so distant that none of them could make out much detail about the specks on the horizon. Something about the two ships raised hackles on Elsa's neck, and it looked to her like Moana was having the same reaction. Elsa and Rapunzel waved the Captain over.
“Yes, your majesties?” he asked as he came over.
“Don't trust the Arendelle ships. I'd have your guns ready to roll out. Something isn't right here,” Elsa said firmly.
The Captain looked at Elsa, then to the ships, and then he stiffened. “Yes, your Majesty. I'll see to it they don't get us!”
The five of them watched as the captain hurried off to begin barking orders for the ships to get under way immediately, and to stay away from the two Arendelle ships. It took a bit, but finally, the group felt the ships begin to get under way. Time seemed to drag by as the ships gathered speed and began to try to evade the Arendelle ships.
It became obvious that the Arendelle ships were on an attack run when one of the fired with a bow cannon across the bow of the fleeing Corona ships. The Captain raised his spy glass and stared at the Arendelle ships for a moment before lowering his glass. He waved for the group of five to come to him on the sterncastle and he frowned as they faced.
“They are demanding the return of Queen Anna,” the Captain said bluntly.
“Well, they can't have her because I am only Princess Anna! There is no Queen Anna,” Anna hissed as she nodded to Elsa.
“That is what I figured, your majesty. Unfortunately we are in their long range now, and will be for some time. That means they can fire on us for a while if they choose. Worse still, they may not care that we have Anna at all if what I am reading is true. I kinda overheard your conversation a bit ago.
“Because of all that, Captain Sternwick has made a decision. He is going to turn his ship to engage the Arendelle ships. He is going to buy us time to flee, and maybe cripple the Arendelle ships. But it will likely cost him his ship,” and the Captain nodded at the ship behind them as it began to make a turn.
“How could you know that?” Elsa asked.
“He had his signal flags flying. My guess he didn't need to know what was going on, cause he already read the situation for himself. That is a brave crew over there. We mustn't waste the chance they are giving us,” the Captain said somberly.
The Captain's words were punctuated by the roar of what seemed to be a hundred cannons all at once. It was obvious Captain Sternwick was fighting now. The Captain turned from the group and began barking orders at his bosun. More sails fell into place, and the ship seemed to strain to move faster. Suddenly the ship seemed to lurch as two cannon shots hammered into the back of the ship.
The Captain began barking orders for the stern chase guns to open up. However, another pair of shot came hurtling in. Only one of the shot was going to plow through the group of demigods and royalty this time. Only it didn't.
There was a resounding “pong!” as Rapunzel reacted on pure reflex and hit the cannon ball with her frying pan. The cannon shot rebounded and flew right back at the Arendelle ship that fired it. Rapunzel seemed stunned as the shot hit the ship squarely in a mast, damaging it severely. It seemed to hold for a moment, and then there was an explosive cracking sound as the mast began to topple over the side of the ship.
The Arendelle ship slewed sideways and the next two shots went wide as a result. The Captain turned his ship slightly and ordered still more speed. That was when the ship lurched again, only this time it wasn't from cannon fire. Everyone looked over the edge of the ship as the water suddenly seemed to shift and froth in a direct line away from the Arendelle ships. The Captain laughed as he noted another current form under the Arendelle ship that further hindered the crippled ship.
It took time, but finally, the ship got out of the range of the Arendelle ships and left them both far behind. Regrettably, everyone saw Captain Sternwick's ship go up in a fiery explosion. However, from the looks of things, both Arendelle ships were heavily damaged and not going to be able to give chase.
The Captain sighed heavily and turned back to the group again as another crewman took the helm of the ship. “My Queen, that was too damned close. I am ecstatic that you have magic again, and that your frying pan sent that cannonball back rather than killing you all, but I don't want a repeat of that. If we get into another fight, you five get below decks and stay there. I am not losing any of you to shit that can be helped.”
“Yes, Captain Renquest,” Rapunzel said with the first bit of humility. That shot had really come far too close.
Captain Renquest nodded and then turned to getting the ship on course. The five headed back to the bow where they all stared out at the ocean ahead. The next leg was going to be far more important than they feared.
