[ Sorry about the long wait. I'm going to aim at having more updates. Instead of monthly I'll try to update at least weekly if not more. I had a bit of IRL issues crop up along with some not so urgent things that I needed to take care of first. Here's the update with a horrible shameless cliff hanger. ]
Sunrise was a wash of blood red that faded quickly away into orange and back to that flat gray leaving only about twenty feet more visible than at night. The terror of the night before was still hovering over the two of them as they unwillingly came to terms with the fact that they couldn't stay there all morning lest it come back and just end them in the hotel. Dipper was the first to stand and had offered down his hand to Mabel to give her a hand up. Looking at her brother with both sorrow and fear he could almost feel the twist of what he could only call an emotional knife as she took his hand. Guilt for the whole situation they both found themselves in was only just starting to settle in and he was sure it would only get worse as time went on. She was here because he was, because he /offered/ to take her with him. Hell he had even suggested it.
Empty stomachs and dry throats motivated both of them to some extent as they got up and started sorting through their things that could obviously not stay here in the hotel. It wasn't safe to come back to and they couldn't cart around suitcases so instead they broke out backpacks. Graduating from schoolbags to hiking packs they had more room than before though at Dipper's suggestion they didn't pack them full.
“If we need to run we need to be able to. We can't weigh ourselves down.” Another dry swallow while looking at the empty camelbak in his bag he wished he had thought to fill it up before, but who could have known the water would be off here? Another swallow consisting of saliva did what it could to give him a break for a short amount of time as he looked to Mabel. “Don't forget to prioritize. Flashlight, maybe two changes of clothing, jacket. Thick clothing, it's cold.” She nodded as she let him talk since it was comforting to her and likely to him too. Once everything was stashed in its place, and Mable had snatched the hotel soap from the sink, they had for the first time in a long time took each others hands for comfort before Dipper opened the door.
Cold air flooded in around them reminding them of just how much colder it was at night than it was during the day and how much colder it was last night than it had been when they arrived. The cold air sucked the breath out of them and stunned them for a precious moment and.... nothing. Nothing was waiting for them outside the door, they saw nothing right away and there was no sound. No bird song, nothing aside from the wind in the trees and their breathing.
“We should get moving, we're- we're only wasting time.” Leading the way from the room Dipper walked with Mabel down the cement path to the stairs and down to the car to survey the damage. Anything that even looked like a wire had been chewed through and the inside of the car smelled like burnt and decayed flesh. Covering his mouth with his sleeve Dipper leaned in for a hunting knife he always kept in the car, not for anything dangerous or even personal safety but instead to cut the seat-belt should the car crash and he be trapped inside- Dipper wasn't overly violent after all.
It was a ways back into town where they could try and scavenge the remains of Gravity Falls for something to eat, perhaps some bottled water, but nothing much happened, as far as they could tell that monster from last night was gone, or at least was doing something else?
“Hey Pine Tree!”
Every hair on Dipper's body stood on end hearing that voice and he turned his head slowly to confirm that yep, there he was, the little golden triangle.
“You said you could only talk to me in my dreams?”
“So I lied, I figured I should wan you that you're in a lot of danger kiddo. You need my help.”
“Dipper? Who are you talking to?” Mabel asked with a concerned look. Things had been stressful and she was honestly concerned for him and how he was talking to himself like this.
“Ah, Bill, he's... here bothering me again.”
“BOTHERING? Oh Pine Tree, I'm insulted! Prices just rose!”
“I won't help you Bill, we don't need you.”
“Call if you need me then Pines, but the price goes up by the hour.”
While Dipper had no intention of calling on Bill the thought that he might stick to that made his skin crawl. No, there would be another way to fix this. There was always another way. Bringing in a lion to solve a problem with a mouse was in no way a good plan or something that Dipper wanted to do or be responsible for. While Mabel was still concerned for her brother when Dipper told her that he was gone she dropped it and the two made it to the small supermarket to find the doors unlocked and the shelves still stocked. No one left because the water was out, there was no raiding of the markets, it was as if someone blinked and everyone just vanished. Unsettling was an understatement and while every bone in his body screamed for him to leave, for him to get out of this town as fast as possible Dipper couldn't just go. This was spreading like a bad infection and there had to be a cure introduced or this would kill the world and of that Dipper was sure.
Food that wouldn't go bad or spoil was priority, so canned anything was fair game. To Mabel this meant fun canned meals she would eat as a child, while to Dipper it meant spam, tuna, vegetables and some canned fruit, something to even out the fact that it was all pretty much junk food. On the way out Dipper had demanded they grab a bit of fresh fruit, at least one banana to prevent muscle cramps and an apple for later though they both took a bit more than that. Should they live long enough they could eat the fruit before it went bad.
Should they live long enough.
It was hard to tell what time it was in this fog and the daylight hours were somehow shorter than outside the town so the pair found themselves dangerously close to sundown and with no plans on where exactly they could go for the night. With time waiting for no one they quickly got together to talk about exactly where a safe place from some horror from the depths of time and space might be.
“Maybe one of the houses?”
“Mabel, we have to make sure there aren't too many windows, somewhere that it would have to work hard to get into.”
“What about a vault like in the bank?”
“Oh come on. You two can't be serious. What if it just spins the wheel and locks you both in? You want to starve to death? Well you would likely run out of air first and as funny as that mi-”
“Bill's back.” Dipper informed his sister who rolled her eyes.
“Ugh. He's so annoying, and why can only you see him? Last time I could see him too remember?”
“Hey, that's right. Why /can't/ she see you Bill?”
“Look kids, that doesn't matter, what does is that it's getting dark. Now if you want to play one hundred questions that's fine with me but uh, we should get you somewhere safe you know. Like the hospital! That would be safe AND you could get me a body!”
As much as Dipper didn't want to think about it, it wasn't a bad option. Sure there were other places that could be just as safe but the hospital had a few floors, likely a morgue and other reinforced areas they could retreat to.
“Fine. We're going to the hospital, come on Mabel, we've gotta run or we won't make it.”
Taking Mabel's hand once more the pair of them ran together while the fog darkened around them hiding the sun from view all together and leaving it painfully obvious that right now they were in a good deal of danger. It wasn't until they could hear claws on the cement behind them that the both of them broke out into a run with everything they had. What ever it was seemed to be fast, and with every one of their steps it took two, but they were so close and the doors loomed just before them.
Dipper reached out to pull the door open and-
