A/N: Just an FYI, in my version of RWBY, there are not two Scrolls, a phone-sized and tablet-sized one. Rather the Scrolls have seams coming from each point of the golden diamond button, allowing it to be opened into either a smartphone or tablet.
Zero sat up, his weaponized prosthetic, Grimoire, already in blaster mode and ready to fire. Gasping for breath, Zero quickly realized he was in his Dorm at Beacon Academy, not the Bone Woods. Shifting Grimoire back into normal mode, he fell back into bed and wiped the cold sweat from his face with his real hand. When his breathing started to slow, his scroll began to blare its alarm tone. Grumbling in annoyance he sat up again and turned off the alarm. Standing up and looking out his window as the sun rose to shine on Beacon, he let out a heavy sigh and began to prepare for the day.
Once he was dressed, he walked to his desk and attached the battle-scarred armor. Taking the tattered scroll, he tied it around his left bicep, an inch above where Grimoire ended. He picked up Gypsy Danger, checked the Dust levels in vial in its circular cross guard before sheathing it across his back.
His eyes ran across the weapons hanging on his wall, before settling on the pink and purple Boom Sticks. Rotting through his desk for a roll of time-faded bandages, the same kind he used to wrap the hilt of Gypsy Danger. Taking the Ballistic Escrima Sticks from the wall, he wrapped them tightly in the bandages, leaving only the tips of the barrels and the triggers uncovered. Satisfied, he slipped them into the back of his belt, ensuring they were secure before leaving his Dorm and heading for the Beacon Cliffs.

Zero emerged from his hiding place among the trees as the last student, Joan Arc, was launched off the cliff. “You do realize she is probably gonna die, right?” the Wolf Faunus asked as stopped just behind the two Professors.“I have faith in her,” Ozpin repeated, taking a sip from his coffee as he kept his eyes glued to the video feeds being displayed on his scroll. “By the way, you will not have access to the surveillance video. Technical problems. Professor Goodwitch or I can sync a video feed to your scroll if it becomes necessary.”
“Figures,” Zero said with a sigh. “Guess I’ll have to keep track of them the hard way.” He ended by tapping a finger against the side of his nose.
“Remember, Mr. Ebon, you are to observe only.” Glynda reminded as she turned to face him. “Do not interfere or reveal yourself unless absolutely necessary.”
“Don’t worry so much, Professor,” Zero replied as he walked to the launch platform Joan had used and stomped it down before taking up a ready stance on it. “Your hair will go grey!” He ended with a wink.
Before Glynda could do more than glare, Ozpin hit a button and launched the teaching assistant off the cliff, and safely out of harm’s way. Taking a sidelong glance at his assistant, he had to hide his smirk at her agitated expression and blushing cheeks behind his mug. “You know, Glynda, Mr. Ebon is correct. If you don’t stop worrying so much, your hair will go grey.”
Glynda turned her glare towards the headmaster and seriously considered using her Semblance to send him off the cliff. Pushing her glasses up her nose and sighing, she turned back to her Scroll as she calmed herself. “Are you sure this a good idea, Ozpin?” she asked in a quiet yet serious voice. “He only finished his physical therapy a week ago, after all.”
“Mr. Ebon will do fine, Glynda. We both know that this position at Beacon will do far more good for him than harm.” Ozpin replied equally seriously, before a note of humor entered his voice. “And besides, secretly chaperoning the Initiation was your idea, wasn’t it?”
The blond shot him another glare and once again considered throwing him off the cliff, before turning her attention back the her scroll. To her surprise, despite Zero having already landed in the Emerald Forest, there was no sign of him on any of the cameras. ‘Strange,’ Glynda thought to herself. ‘He has become as stealthy as his sister was…but when did he have time to practice stealth and evasion during physical therapy?’
<><><> Zero Ebon was bored. He barely had to try and be stealthy to keep his presence hidden from the four male students who had chosen the Black Bishop pieces. They had encountered minimal Grimm, and always had the monsters outnumbered. Still, he had learned enough to realize that only two of them had any real potential. Cardin Winchester was way too headstrong, and would probably get himself killed doing something stupid. And Sky Lark was…pathetic for lack of a better term. Sure, he could handle himself well, but he scared way too easy. And that fear was attracting Grimm.Roughly a dozen Beowolves were closing in on the group, and so far not a single one of them had noticed. “Idiots,” Zero muttered to himself. He looked down from his perch on a tree branch, and wrapped his right hand around the bandaged hilt of his weapon. Just as he started to lift the weapon from its scabbard, the two students with potential, Dove Bronzewing and Russel Thrush, finally realized they were surrounded and warned their future teammates.
Zero shook his head and dropped his hand. Though they were outnumbered, he had confidence they could win. And hell, some cuts and bruises might toughen them up a bit. Although…Zero’s ears and nose twitched as he sensed more Grimm approaching from the west. A lot more.
Already moving from branch to branch, tree to tree, Zero pulled out his scroll and started to dial the headmaster, but quickly changed his mind and dialed Goodwitch instead. “Professor! A large group of Grimm are approaching four of the students, who are already engaged in combat. This group is too large for them. Requesting permission to intercept!”
Glynda sighed. “It’s obvious by your movements you are already on your way to do just that, regardless of whether I give you permission. Very well, Mr. Ebon, but do not reveal yourself to the other students!” The professor ended with a stern look.
Zero answered with a wolfish grin and ended the call. He quickly reached a small clearing where the Grimm would have to pass through to reach the students behind him. “Sure hope this is far enough away,’ he thought to himself as he landed and drew Gypsy Danger. He started to shift Grimoire into blaster form, but stopped as he remembered just how loud the explosions of its energy bolts could be.
As the first Grimm, a Beowolf, burst into the clearing, Zero sidestepped its attack and brought Gypsy Danger down in a powerful slash, easily cutting the monster in two just below its shoulders. An Ursa pulled back its arm, ready to swipe, but Zero was faster, and brought his sword up to bisect the Grimm from hip to shoulder.
As the two halves fell, he saw a Boarbatusk rolling towards him. Thrusting out Grimoire and planting his feet, he barely managed to stop it from running him down, though it continued to spin in place, grinding against his palm and sending sparks flying.
As the Grimm slowed its roll, Zero plunged the tip of sword through a gap in its bony armor. Planting a foot on its carcass, he leapt backwards, barely avoiding a swipe from another Ursa. Taking in the large number of Grimm now in the clearing and converging on him, a feral grin spread across the Wolf Faunus’s face as he switched Gypsy Danger to whip form and started swinging, the gleaming black blade segments flashing in the light filtering through the canopy of leaves above.
More and more Grimm flooded into the clearing, faster than he could kill them. Zero’s grin only spread, and he triggered the Violet Dust in his weapon. The dark grey chain connecting Gypsy Danger’s blade segments began to glow as the energy flowed through it, and the force of his attacks increased as the Dust of Gravity and Mass took effect.
Zero’s grin grew ever wider as his eyes began to darken, a maelstrom of death and destruction forming in front of him. When the last Grimm fell to the ground in three separate pieces, Zero retracted his weapon and planted the tip in the ground, leaning heavily against it as he fought off the fatigue of using even a partial Semblance. The trees were deeply scored, with several severed branches lying about, and the smoldering remains of almost 50 Grimm covered the ground like a morbid carpet.
His scroll chimed faintly and he fished it out, accepting the call from Professor Goodwitch. “It’s done,” he said, trying to keep the fatigue out of his voice.
“Excellent work, Mr. Ebon,” Glynda replied. “Mr.’s Winchester, Thrush, Bronzewing, and Lark have made it the cliffs and are scaling them now. However, it appears the other students have encountered two big problems. Please make your way to the ruined tower at once!”
Zero sheathed his sword and quickly made his way towards the ruins he knew all too well. It was where he, his sister and their team mates had held their ground against a small horde of Grimm that they had rather stupidly attracted the attention of by blundering all through the forest in search of the temple holding the relics that would assign them their teams.
As he got closer, he heard the sounds of battle. Stopping on a tree branch that let him see the battle unfolding while staying far enough away to remain undetected. He saw Joan display a surprising capability for tactical thinking and leadership when she recognized a weakness on the Giant Deathstalker and was able to guide two of the other students into exploiting it. “Faith indeed,” Zero said to himself before turning his attention to the tower itself, where the other four girls he was responsible for were doing battle against a Giant Nevermore.
He watched in shocked awe as the girls improvised a giant slingshot and launched Ruby Rose at the beast. His eyes widen as she ran up the cliff face, dragging the Grimm behind her. And when she reached the top, decapitated it.
“Wow…” Zero whispered as he gazed at the distant figure in red. “I have got to meet that girl!”
<><><> As the newly formed Teams RWBY and JNPR celebrated, they were approached by a young man who looked one or two years older than them. Two scars ran across his handsome face, and his school uniform was modified by two pieces of armor on his right arm that had seen better days, a tattered scarf tied around his left arm, and a white glove on his left hand.“Sorry to interrupt,” he addressed the girls in a voice that seemed both quiet and powerful. “My name is Zero Ebon. I am a second-year student and teaching assistant. It’s my duty to show to your Dorms, so if you’re ready, please follow me.”
The girls were all too happy to comply after their long day, and continued to chat happily amongst themselves as they followed the upperclassman out of the Amphitheatre and across the campus. Ruby Rose was distracted, however. She had never really been all that interested in boys before, preferring the company of her sister or weapon, but something about Zero had her mesmerized.
As they neared the cluster of dorm buildings, Ruby worked up the courage to talk to him, increasing her pace to match his. “Umm…hello, my name is Ruby Rose,” she stated nervously, a blush spreading across her cheeks. “But I guess you probably already knew that, since Professor Ozpin said it, and it was on the big screens, and my team is called RWBY and I’m called Ruby…” the petite girl slowly ended her rambling, blushing even brighter and seriously considering using her Semblance to run away.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you,” Zero replied, flashing her a small smile that sent her heart all aflutter. “I saw your fight against the Nevermore. Very impressive, Little Red. It was a crazy plan, but you know what they say, if it’s crazy but it works-“
“Then it ain’t crazy!” they both ended at the same time, bursting in laughter. At least until Ruby processed what the upperclassman had called her. “Hey!” she cried out indignantly, crossing her arms under her small breasts and turning up her nose. “I’m not little! I drink milk!”
Zero laughed nervously, turning his face away to hide the blush spreading across his cheeks. ‘No one should be that cute when they pout.’ Thankfully he was saved by their timely arrival at the dorm building. Clearing his throat, he spoke loud enough for the group to hear “This is our building. Please, follow me.”
Zero led them up the stairs, there be too many of them to comfortably fit in the elevator, and entered their hallway from the back rather than the front. “I’m your floor manager, so this first door on your right is my room, in case any of you ever need anything. On the left is the bathroom.” Leading them further down the hall, he walked past the other two doors in the hall before turning on his heel and facing the group. “The room on your right is for Team RWBY, and the room on your left is for Team JNPR.” Zero looked each girl in the eyes before continuing, “You have all had a long day, and won difficult battles. But classes start first thing tomorrow morning, and you really don’t want to get on Professor Goodwitch’s bad side by being late on your first day of class. So, get some rest.”
As the girls happily filed into their rooms, more than happy to go to bed after such a long day, Zero moved past them, back towards his own room. When he reached his door, he felt compelled to turn around, and saw Ruby Rose standing outside her own door. Violet eyes met silver, and time stood still for just a moment. Both teens blushed and quickly entered their own rooms.
Zero headed straight for his nightstand and took one of his Alpha Blockers to suppress the instincts he could feel welling up inside him. The instinct to take that girl in his arms, to kiss her, to rip off her clothes and….’NO!’ he roared inside his own head. “Not again….never again….” He whispered to himself as he slumped on his bed…
