Excellent, this is exactly what I was aiming for, useful feedback for improvement. Keep it going everyone!
The hallway was coloured in a metallic shade of slightly greyish white with a close to mirror finish, as thought freshly painted. The floor was covered with a thick, black, industrial type carpet, the kind you would expect at a laboratory, or an environment that housed dangerous species like misbehaving brats… The doors were mostly unmarked, little more than twice as tall as either of the cousins, and each accompanied by a small display panel to the right, they would soon figure those out.
“Yeah! No what I expected AT ALL” Ben said astonished as he turned round and round, amazed by the pleasant surprise.
“You got yourself a pretty nice place Astrid” Gwen agreed as she inspected her new stay place much more quietly than her cousin.
“Thank you so much! I’m glad you like it! And now let me show you, here’s where you’re staying” said the basement’s owner as she placed her eye on a scanner and a large, metallic door opened, revealing a cosy bedroom that was no second class to a luxury hotel room: it was decorated in a similar fashion to Astrid’s cabin, with a flat screen TV on the middle and what seemed to be an air-conditioning device mounted on the ceiling. There was a large desk with a couple cushioned chairs, the floor was fully covered with a fluffy, dark blue carpet and there were 2 individual and one large beds on it.
“Wow, I like this place, I’ll take this one! You can send Gwen to whichever other room you have, the uglier the better” Ben said as he jumped over the large bed.
“As gentleman like as always Ben” Gwen mumbled as she headed to the door.
“Where are you going Gwen?” Astrid asked.
“To my room of course! The less time I’m spending with this dumb the better” Gwen replied in her usual snobbish voice.
“But you didn’t come here to be away from Ben, you came here to learn how to get along with him! That means you two get to be in the same room during your whole stay”
“WHAT!?” both of them replied as they jumped in surprise.
“Well, this is just the first step, you two stay in the same room so you are forced to learn how to coexist together, the big bed gives you something to fight over and teaches you how to make a win-win agreement, the two small beds are there in case you end up agreeing to nothing, which is most likely what will happen – giggles – so in any given situation, this is the best way to start your tuition”
“And what if I refuse to stay in this room?” Ben said defiant.
“I was waiting for either of you to say that, of course you don’t have to stay here all day long! Now if you would please follow me” Astrid replied as she stepped out of the room and towards the hallway.
“I couldn’t possibly hate you more at this time” Ben angrily whispered to his cousin.
“It goes both ways, you dork” Gwen replied as she followed Astrid out of the room.
“You see all of those doors? Each one of them leads to a different room, and each room has something different on it, a small cinema, a video game arcade, a 4 lanes bowling alley, even an underground garden! I spend a lot of time here when I’m bored”
“Video game arcade?” Ben said excited.
“A garden growing underground? How you do that?” Gwen asked expectantly.
“Well, you can find out on your own once you’re inside!” Astrid replied happily, not bothering to hide her pride on the environment.
“Now I can finally get away from YOU!” both cousins said to each other.
“Wait up kids! It’s not as easy as it sounds! Here you go, one for each” said Astrid as she handed over a slide-card to each one of them; “those cards act like keys, they can open any door on these basements except bedrooms other than yours, and this map will show you what’s inside each one” she continued as she pointed out to a virtual map on the wall; “the map is interactive so if you’re not sure, just ask! However there’s a catch, otherwise it wouldn’t be funny! To open any door you need BOTH cards, a single card is useless on its own”
“I knew it was too good to be true” Gwen said in low spirits as she sighed.
“What? But the arcade! And the movies! And the other totally cool stuff! I didn’t come here to spend a week doing girly stuff!” Ben ranted much more upset than his cousin.
“That’s another part of the lesson! Learn to agree and co-exist, and maybe you will find out spending time together doesn’t have to be boring or nasty; how you spend your time here is totally up to you however, you can spend 2 weeks staring at each other in anger, or can have the vacation of your lives, it’s up to you two! I’m leaving you now” Astrid said conclusive as she started walking to the elevator.
“Wait, so that’s all you gonna do? Throw us in a ditch and wait for us to get out on our own?” Gwen complained.
“Awwwwww, but you make me sound like such a meanie! Let’s just say I’m giving you the necessary means to get along with each other, and it’s up to you to use them!” Astrid replied with a big smile and headed back to the elevator, leaving them alone.
“I call the big bed!” Ben said as he rushed towards the room, only to hit himself on the door as it did not open automatically.
“Did your mom drop you on your head several times when you were a baby? Or you just were not paying attention? To open any door – and yes, that includes “our” room – you need both of these things” Gwen said as she hanged hers around her neck with a pink piece of string.
“Yeah I knew it” Ben answered upset as he slid his own card thru the reader on the left, a light turned green and after Gwen did the same on the right one, the door opened. Ben tried to rush in, only to trip over as Gwen placed her foot right in front of his.
“Not so fast Ben” she said sarcastically as she stepped into the room.
Right after that there was a big quarrel about the large bed, with no coherent arguments from either side, mostly just claiming it because of gender, heroic condition or just plain recklessness; they ended up throwing all their stuff over it, so none of them could use it.
“Happy now numb skull?” Gwen asked panting.
“If you’re not, then I am” Ben replied at the same condition.
A couple hours passed where they just sat at their beds seemingly doing nothing, Ben playing some super sumo videogame and Gwen typing non-stop on her laptop, it was also her who finally broke the silence.
“Ok Ben, I’ve designed a schedule we can both use, according to the different…”
“And I got a schedule of my own! Get out of my sight!” Ben said as he bashed the omnitrix and transformed into upgrade; “see you in 2 weeks!” he continued as he tried to posses the electronical matrix, only to be repelled by a quite strong impulse of electricity that tossed him back a couple of meters.
“You think I didn’t try that already? These are by far the strongest defences I’ve ever seen, they’re totally hacker proof! And I’m pretty sure you already noticed that” she replied as she saw upgrade with a hand over it’s head, trying to snap out of the shock.
“This officially sucks!” said Ben as a familiar red light glowed for a few instants; “and there’s no way you’re making me follow one of your boring, nasty schedules!” he continued ranting.
Well, do you have a better idea?
“Of course! I can just take this!” Ben said as he jumped towards Gwen, only to be repelled by a blue light.
“Nice try numb skull, I’m shrouded by a magic force field and won’t put it down until we’re out of this place, so you’re not getting my key that easy, it’s either go with the schedule or spend those 2 weeks staring at each other angrily as Astrid said”
“So be it!” Ben answered madly as he returned to his bed.
The rest of the day went by more or less the same, both cousins mad at each other and just glaring eventually; “why does he have to be so stubborn? I wouldn’t mind doing stuff with him if he only started thinking about someone other than himself” Gwen thought as she played the 15th round of solitaire in a row.
“I’m so bored, why didn’t I bring other games? Stupid Gwen” passes thru Ben’s head as he continues to play the sumo game.
“Dinner time guys! Going down in 5 minutes!” was heard across the room, with all the ranting and fighting, they had totally forgotten about eating.
