Chapter 3: The Next Morning
I woke up the next morning in my bed, back in my dorm room. “Wow, what a weird dream.” I looked over at my clock, which read 7:26 A.M. I then looked at my calendar next to the clock. Saturday December 2nd. I decided to got out of bed, get dressed, and head down to the cafeteria for breakfast. I threw on a pair of black pants, my Gears of War 3 Infected Omen T-shirt, and My Gears of War 3 hoodie with crossing Lancers on the front that my parents sent over for my birthday. I slipped into my black sneakers and grabbed my glasses off of my nightstand (yes that is part of my regular attire). I opened my door and saw Odd and Ulrich walking down the hall to the door leading outside. “Morning guys.” I said groggily while cleaning the lenses of my glasses. “Morning.” Ulrich said. “Sleep well?” “I guess you could say that. I had this crazy dream though. You, me, Odd, Yumi, and Aelita were on this place called Lyoko fighting monsters that were like giant Krabs and Hornets. Odd looked like a giant purple cat and could shoot arrows from his wrist, and you were a samurai, and I was… What?” I asked when they were looking at me seriously. There was an awkward silence for a few minutes when Ulrich finally said, “That wasn’t a dream.” “Huh? Please tell me you’re kidding.” “I wish.” “Oh boy.” When we got outside, we saw that it was lightly snowing. As the three of us walked toward the cafeteria, I wasn’t paying much attention to where I was walking, only to realize at the last possible second that I was about to walk right into Yumi, but couldn’t stop and we both ended up on the ground. “Owww. Sorry, Yumi. I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going.” I said as I stood up, walked over to Yumi and offered her my hand. “That’s okay, it was an accident.” She said, taking my hand as I helped her up. “I just have a lot on my mind.” I said, trying to hide my nervousness. “Other than about what happened yesterday? What else is bothering you?” She asked. “Well, I know it’s still a few weeks away, but I was wondering if maybe, if no one’s asked you yet that is…” I tried to say, hiding my face so Yumi couldn’t see how bad I was blushing as I tried to say this, “… if you would be my date for the Christmas dance?” I finished quickly, extremely embarrassed over such a simple question. “Well uh, I don’t know what to say…” I could tell from her voice that this made her fell really uncomfortable. “I don’t need an answer right now. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you feel uncomfortable.” I said, trying to ease the nervous tension in both of us. “No, it’s okay. I’m actually glad you asked. I’d love too.” Yumi replied. “Seriously?” I asked, felling my embarrassment and nervousness subside. “Sure, why not? If we’re going to talk, can we get out of this cold though? I’m starting to feel like an ice cube.” Yumi said. “You definitely have the personality for it at times.” Odd said jokingly. “ODD!!!” Yumi, Ulrich and I all said at the same time. “Too far?” Odd asked sheepishly. “Yeah, way too far.” Ulrich answered, as we started, again, walking toward the cafeteria. We walked into the cafeteria, got our trays and got in line, got our food, and then went over to our regular table, where Jeremy and Aelita were already there. “Hey guys.” Jeremy said. “Morning Jeremy, morning Aelita.” I said, yawning due to the fact that I was still pretty tired. “So, how are you felling Ryan?” Aelita asked. “After yesterday? Honestly, I’m still trying to sort everything out in my head. Would it be possible for us to go over to the factory later so that I can get a little training in?” I asked. “Sure. We can head over right after breakfast.” Jeremy replied “Uh, yeah about that. I heard Jim was able to get a half pipe for student use in the gymnasium on the weekends and Odd, Ulrich and I were gonna go try it out and practice a bit.” I said. (I don’t actually skateboard. I had a board at one point, but the color wound up getting bleached by the sun, and it rotted away because of the moisture, so I had to get rid of it. I would however love to try and learn again) “Okay, then how about we meet at the factory around 9:30 then?” Jeremy asked. “Sounds good to me. Guys?” I said, looking to Odd and Ulrich, who also wanted to try out the new half pipe. “Sure.” They both said at the same time. It was about 7:53 when we got done eating breakfast. We then went up to my dorm so that I could grab my helmet, elbow and knee pads and my skateboard, which had the skeletal structure of a falcons skull (same as the Falcon 2 board in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater). We left my dorm and went down to the gymnasium (I use gymnasium in case I have Jim immediately after, because “… to the gym, Jim” sounds a little weird). I opened the door to see the finished half pipe in the middle of the gymnasium. It looked like we were the first and only people at the time. I looked up and saw Jim standing at the top of the half pipe, and I yelled up to him, “Morning Jim!” Jim looked down and said back, “Good Morning.” He then walked down the stairs and said, “Hmmm, judging by how the three of you are dressed, you want to use the half pipe, correct?” he asked “Of course, we wouldn’t have our skateboards otherwise.” I said back. “Alright go ahead, but one at a time. We don’t want any accidents.” “Okay Jim. You guys can go ahead, I need to adjust a few things and make sure that my board is balanced.” I said, walking over to the bleachers, sitting down and placing my board on my lap, and started checking anything and everything that could cause a problem on my board while Odd took his turn. Yumi, Aelita and Jeremy sat down on either side of me, Yumi on my right, and Aelita and Jeremy on my left, while Ulrich sat at the top of the half pipe, waiting for his turn. It took me quite a while to adjust everything on my board. When Ulrich finished his run, I was too focused on making final adjustments when Yumi tapped my shoulder and said, “You’re up.” I stood up and started for the stairs.(if this part doesn’t sound to great, please let me know, and if you have a suggestion of how it should be written). When I got to the top, I placed the tail end of my board on the edge of the half pipe, placed a foot on the back, and then placed my other foot on the board and started rolling down the pipe. At first, I just went back and forth to get a little momentum. Then, I did a handplant on the left side of the half pipe and held it for about 3 seconds and let go. When I reached the top on the other side, when I felt I was high enough, I pulled off a kickflip, into a 360 heelflip. When I got back to the left side, I tried for a 540 Benihana and landed it. I decided to go for one last trick before I was done. I decided to try the one thing that I had never had any success with; a Varial into a 360 Flip to Mute. Every time I tried to pull this off, I could never get the timing right, Unfortunately, today was another one of those days. I hit the half pipe hard, tumbling down the ramp, while my board snapped in half in the middle and landed on either side of me. I sat up, unhooked my helmet, and threw it to my left, almost taking Jeremy off his feet, as he and the others rushed over to help me, and Jim right behind them. “Are you okay, Ryan?” Yumi asked with concern in her voice. “Yeah. The only thing that hurts is my right shoulder. That’s gonna be sore for a while.” I answered. “I hate to tell you, but you’re boards not so lucky.” I heard Ulrich say. I looked to right, and he was holding half of my skateboard in each hand, and handed it to me. I took the pieces from Ulrich, looked at them for a moment, and tried to hold back tears from forming. “My dad bought this for me for my first board.” I said, unable to keep the tears back any longer. “I guess it was bound to happen sooner or later.” I said, wiping the tears from my eyes. I stood up, walked over to my helmet, picked it up, and started for the door. I made sure that everyone was outside behind me and that no one else was around to hear me say, “You guys head to the factory. I’ll catch up in a bit.” For the record, I don’t actually skateboard. I just played a LOT of Tony Hawk while I was writing this chapter.
