The invading warriors were invigorated by the arrival of reinforcements. The Earthbenders dug trenches and walls to the harbor while the Waterbenders sank and stole ships belonging to the Fire Nation.
True to her word, Gran-Gran rowed her kayak swiftly ferrying hangers-on from the shores to the boats that would take them to safety while children accustomed to throwing snowballs hurled skins filled with whale and seal oil at unsuspecting Firebenders.
The Southern men fought hard to impress and protect their women and children while the Northen men fought hard not to be outdone by them. By the time the Fire Nation troops realized what was happening Katara had made it to Pakku’s side and together they had disabled four destroyers and a countless number of airships.
“What do you mean the blockade has been run by Waterbenders and half of my fleet is sinking?” Ozai growled spitting fire at the messenger. Enraged he called for his children as he gathered his armor to head into battle, “Today we end this.”
Zuko was standing outside his father’s chamber gathering the nerve to confront him when the doors flew off their hinges in a burst of fire. Ozai clapped his shoulder smiling menacingly, “My son, get your armor. Today we’ll put an end to the Avatar and his supporters.”
The Prince’s original intentions were momentarily forgotten at the rare display of approval and affection from his father.
The heralds’ announcement that “Fire Lord Ozai is leaving the palace and preparing to enter the battle!” was quickly taken up by the Fire Nation soldiers giving the invasion force a much needed warning.
The chants of “Long live Fire Lord Ozai, Prince Zuko and Princess Azula, saviors of our people!” grew louder as the royals made their way to the battleground.
“We gotta go now!” several of the invaders yelled.
Water flooded the shore as the Waterbenders minus Pakku and Katara moved as one propelling the rescue ships backwards through the gates of Azulon. The two masters stood on the shore pushing their comrades to safety while protecting the meeting point.
“Sokka, I see Aang where’s Toph?” Katara asked impatiently.
“I don’t know. She felt General Iroh fighting underground and went help him. She said she’d meet me here,” Sokka explained
“We can’t wait much longer. The Fire Lord’s coming and Aang’s not ready to face him while he can bend,” Katara yelled.
“I know, but we can’t leave her,” Sokka yelled right back.
“You must. She will be fine with Iroh.” Pakku said directing a large wave at the approaching wall of fire.
“Go,” Pakku ordered, getting into a bending stance, “Katara, this is your final lesson.”
“Master Pakku!” Katara screamed as Appa took off. She watched in disbelief as all of the water lifted from the bay creating a deluge the size of which Jet could never imagine flooding the city of Soizin. She was much too horrified to notice a single figure surfing a water spout the other direction.
Ozai inhaled deeply, swallowing his rage, letting it fuel his internal fire before blowing pure blue flames at the approaching tsunami single handedly saving his city.
When the steam cleared the Fire Nation citizens who had come out from hiding were cheering for their Fire Lord. The only sign left of the intruders was Appa’s decreasing speck in the sky.
Iroh hated fighting his own, people but it was necessary so Ozai would not think they allowed him to escape. The old general had helped design the current uniform so he knew all of its weak points and just where to hit it with a punch, kick or quick burst of fire to temporarily disable its owner without causing permanent damage. He turned shooting a burst of flame at face level when someone dropped down behind him.
“Good thing I’m short aye, Gramps?” Toph said pulling up a wall of rock on either side of them and pushing the ground beneath them forward.
“Miss Toph, what are you doing here?” Iroh asked surprised.
“I was in the area and recognized your footsteps. Just thought I’d drop in and give you an invitation to the Western Air Temple for tea in exchange for few Firebending lessons,” she said modestly.
“I’d be honored” Iroh replied, “However, I do insist that you drop the wall in front of us so I can see where we’re going.”
“Don’t worry about it Gramps, I know where we’re going,” Toph replied propelling their rock sled faster and angling it upwards only after she felt the sand and sediment mix unique to the rendezvous point.
“Something’s wrong. I don’t feel them.” Toph said nervously bending a small opening in the ground above her; steamed drifted into the tunnel along with fervent cries of “All hail Fire Lord Ozai, our leader and savior!”
“It can’t be,” the blind girl uttered.
Iroh stuck his head through the opening “It’s all right Miss Toph, I can see the Avatar’s bison escaping.”
He turned his head and quickly brought it back down, “Close the tunnel. Be very still and quiet. My brother is headed this direction”. Toph obeyed without question leaving a miniscule crack for air and eavesdropping.
“Soldier, prepare a war balloon. Don’t worry Father, I’ll track them,” Zuko said eyeing the retreating animal as it grew smaller in the sky. His uncle had apparently saved himself. Perhaps it wasn’t too late to join the Avatar.
His son had already left his side when the Fire Lord turned to his daughter, “Azula.”
“Yes, Father,” she replied dutifully.
Ozia’s eyes narrowed, “Take the Ursa and follow your brother.”
Azula’s widened and she bowed respectfully. The Ursa was her father’s personal vessel. It was an empire class ship that was part destroyer and part luxury liner. It said much that he was entrusting it to her but his next words said more.
“Return to me with the Avatar in chains.”
Unlike his order to Zuko, do not set foot on Fire Nation soil without the missing and presumed non-existent Avatar. He fully expected her to return to him victorious. She would not disappoint him.
