Sokka carefully picked his way through the forest taking care to leave as little tracks as possible and sound as the moon hung above silently watching him. He would have preferred back up but everyone else was either watching for the fire nation soldiers or preparing for their arrival besides he wasn’t sure how Appa would react to his presence let alone anyone else. Stepping onto the edge of a clearing he saw the giant sky bison sleeping without a care in the world. Raising his foot to cross the threshold to the clearing he quickly retracted it, disappearing into the bushes as a fire nation solder stepped into view leading several more. They quickly surrounded the unconscious creature with their weapons raised.
“What the hell are my scouts doing?!” He thought to himself as he watched them deciding what to do with the sleeping flying beast. He was fully equipped, his Armourdiloboar armour dyed black with wild berries, two straight blades hung on either side of his hips, a blow pipe at the small of his back, several small throwing blades secreted on his person and some smoke bombs for a quick escape amongst other things. Taking on a dozen fire nation soldiers was still unfavorable especially by himself.
“This is the avatar’s pet!” One of the soldiers shouted excitingly.
Sokka cursed silently as he began to form a plan to dispatch the soldiers without any running away to inform others. It would be difficult but doable and extremely dangerous; He Stealthily crawled from the bush to a tree trunk and drew his small blow pipe. He quickly loaded it with a deadly poison dart. Taking a deep breath for both the weapon and to calm his nerves he clamped his lips onto the wooden shaft and expelled his breath in a sharp burst. The small projectile sailed through the air without a sound and pieced the closest soldier’s neck. He had time to raise his hand to his offended neck and mutter out a grunt before toppling over like a sack of potatoes. The remaining soldiers were slow in realizing they were under attack, Sokka took down one more before ghosting his way to the side. The soldiers upon realizing the side in which they were being attacked from returned fire with a blazing inferno combining all of their power. The tree Sokka had been hiding behind along with several others and the foliage were incinerated even on the other side Sokka recoiled from the heat and averted his night adjusted eyes from the bright fire display. A loud roar that seemed to shake the earth was expelled from Appa’s mouth as he awoke to see a large fire and fire nation soldiers in close proximity. The troops turned to face the beast preparing to slay it but Sokka had other plans, cursing his luck he drew two small blades at the couple of soldiers closest to him and the charged whilst drawing his swords. The sickening crunches drew the remaining troops’ attention as his knives sunk into fire nation flesh however they were quicker to react as they turned to face the new threat. The first struck with a simple straight flame thrust but Sokka dived diagonally left and rose with his sword point leading the way. Sparks flew as his sword scrapped along the soldier’s chest plate as the trooper stumbled back by the force of the blow another fire bender sent a complex series of fire blows at him. He followed the fallen soldier and using him as a jump pad leaped backwards over the fire and threw his sword at the offending soldier whose death gurgles were screamed out as the fire attacks burnt the fallen man to death. Appa turned and stuck with a powerful wind sending Sokka and the remaining soldiers airborne. Twisting in the air Sokka avoided the trees’ larger branches; he gritted his teeth as the small tree limbs and undergrowth cut into his exposed flesh. He landed on top of a particular thick bush and let out a loud sigh. He rolled off the plant suffering further superficial damage as he landed on his feet thankful he had held onto his remaining sword throughout the ordeal. He surveyed the area as he heard several men groan and grunt as the soldiers stood up from their various positions. Sharply expelling a breath Sokka sprinted towards the closest soldier and fell upon him like death it’s self, he flipped around tree’s and dove over bushes to avoid the more powerful fire techniques but suffered the slight burns as he went from one soldier to the next mercilessly cutting them down. He ran the last unfortunate man through from behind and nearly fell on top of him as his victim collapsed nearly yanking the sword from his hand. He managed to pull his weapon from the corpse as he made his way to the clearing.
Appa was stalking back and forth along the clearing edge unsure of whether to follow his prey. He wiped the blood off his blade with his hand which he smeared on a tree before sheathing the blade. He finally stepped into the clearing wary of Appa, ready to dodge if the mythical creature was violent. Appa stepped up alarmingly close and took several long sniffs of him trying to identify the oddly familiar yet also strange scent. Finally the Bison realized it was Sokka and with a roar of joy as he crashed the young man over and licked him madly. Sokka pushed him off though it was more Appa reluctance to continue pinning him than his own efforts. He pulled himself up and pulled his weapons from the troops which had been thankfully spared the giant creature’s typhoon. He walked up to Appa running his hand only his flank as he felt its ribs through the skin. The animal calmed as Sokka stroked its sides making his way to the head he spoke clearly.
“Appa you can’t stay here, let’s go before anyone else spots you” Appa for his part was obviously anxious to leave the bloody and burnt battle field. He leaped into the night air immediately after Sokka had climbed on and grasped the reins. Sokka sighed as he felt a feeling he hadn’t felt in seven years sweep through his very soul. His hands tightened on the reins as he stared at the moon memories flashing threw his mind as the image of Yue falling into water as her hair and blood alike spread thought out the pool. He was called back to the present as Appa’s growl filled his ear. He realized he was pulling on the reins forcing Appa’s head painfully back. He took in a quick scan of his surroundings and steered Appa towards the mountain and into the enclave that would shelter the giant beast. He slid off the side and grabbed some hay that they kept stored, mostly for beds but hay was hay Sokka reasoned.
“Stay in here, where no one can see you” He said to Appa as he stroked his head before he left the large room through a smaller door.
He nodded to the guards as he stepped out who were obviously curious as to what was in the room but figured they would peek when he was gone. Sokka walked calmly to his room the smell of blood and burnt cloth filled his nostrils as he sorted through his pack grabbing another set of clothes. His muscles protested as he began to pull off his armodilboar armour, he would have to grab Lee and send runners in the morning to find what happened to the scouts but right now he wanted nothing more than to slip into the hot spring he had discovered in the mountain and soak.
Aang sat outside the cave drawing awkward glances from the two guards at the entrance though it was hard see with the sun down and they still didn’t light any torches. The moon light gave sufficient light to see the scenery and the town was lit up like a bonfire on the edge of the water. His eyes were drawn to the town like a firepossum to a torch, he pulled his eyes away to look out to sea thoughts swirled around his head like a tornadoes. He had failed…again, the world had paid for his mistake, his friends had paid…Katara had paid but she still looked for him never giving up but why didn’t she realize he wasn’t worth it. A shuffle noise pulled him back to reality; one of the sentries was walking towards him and kneeling down. He quietly whispered to Aang like he was scared someone would overhear them.
“Hey, a-are you really the Avatar?” It was a long time before the child monk answered.
“No, I’m a failure” This answer seemed to confuse him before he finally seemed to shake off it off and almost as if a river exploded he started shooting questions are Aang.“So is what they say true are you like hundreds of years old? Can you really fly? Is it true you can destroy a nation with a wave of your hand? Where have you been all these years? Are you going to slaughter the fire nation?
“Wh-What?! No, why would I slaughter anybody?”
“The fire Nation of course! Cos what they did”
“What did they do?” Aang asked dreading the answer but refusing to shy away from his responsibility.
The youth took on a thoughtful expression though in the moonlight it was difficult to tell.
“They killed my parents…they were in the earth nation when it was burnt”
“What do you mean the Earth nation was burnt?”
“Well just before Ozai was-”
He was cut off as Heavy footsteps echoed from inside the cave and he immediately leaped back into place. Sokka appeared at the entrance wearing a pants, shirt and slip on shoes. He shot the lookout that had been talking to Aang a look then turned to Aang.
“Come on she won’t be here until at least morning probably much later so you best get some sleep”
“Umm, yeah sure” Aang took one last look out to sea and followed him into the cave. Sokka led him through the maze of tunnels and to a room with only a bed of hay in it.
“What about Apa? He’s outside waiting for me”
“Don’t worry I already flew him here he’s in the alcove down the hall”
“See you in the morning” Sokka walked up the hall a bit then went into his own room.
Aang laid there awake staring into the rock ceiling, thoughts of the years he had missed and what could possibly have happened.
