The hot sun beat down upon her skin with relentless power but she loved it. She soaked in its nutrients and continued working on digging the holes for the seeds. They had two weeks left to finish planting before the nourishing rains began.
Azula pushed the long ponytail back over her shoulder with dirt-covered hands. She was on a mission to finish the Northern field. She told him she could do it and she meant it. He doubted her before. She knew he did not doubt her now. A strong wind blew the ends of the belt over her shoulder and before her face. She stopped digging to stare at the blue material before her.
Why was he being nice to her? Maybe he felt responsible for her cramp last night. He was never around to help her. Meng took up all his time and he saw nothing wrong with it. She did not care if this was just for the people’s sake; there was no way she would lose Aang to her. Azula pushed the ties back and continued digging.
What would her nation think if they could see her now? Princess Azula fire maiden of the fire nation; a farmer and married to the Avatar. A smile formed on her face thinking of the terrible wrath her father would bestow upon her. He hated everything she was. She knew that now. If he were alive, he would never love her as he did Zuko. No matter what she did, she never received an ounce of the love Zuko so easily garnered from their father. None of that mattered now, Zuko was emperor, and their father was dead, killed by Aang.
She watched the entire battle not looking away once even when Aang beheaded him with a sword of air. She was ready to die when Ozai fell. She closed her eyes and offered him her neck. It was the second time in her life that she cried, the first being the death of her mother. She did not know what stayed his deadly hand but now she sat here, Sowing seeds for her enemy and husband. She softly chuckled to herself.
“What has made you laugh?”
She looked up and turned around to find her shirtless husband standing behind her with a slight frown. It was not as if she had never seen him without a shirt but something was different. Something inside her belly tumbled as she watched the sweat roll over the muscles on his wide chest. His baldhead had a week’s worth of stubble on it and so did his chin and jaw line. He looked upset about something as he stared down at her. Even his marred expression caused a tumble in her stomach.
He heard a stuttered breath leave her and she turned away. “I…I do not think you will find it amusing.”
“Is it another peasant observation?” Aang kneeled down next to her seeing her uncomfortable reaction to his skin. This was new. The only reaction he had ever seen from her was contempt. Why was she so aware of him now?
“No it is not.” She looked into his blue eyes and found them looking down her body. Dirt covered the beautiful blue kimono; rips and sweat covered it as well. However, her legs were just fine, and golden.
“Why did you wear this? It is ruined.” He spoke not taking his eyes from her legs.
“You can buy me another one.” Her voice commanded his attention and brought his eyes to hers. The dark orbs bore into his blues. The Avatar raised an eyebrow feeling sensations running over his body. This was new. The only reaction he ever had towards her was one of preservation. He would let no one harm her no matter what she had done in the past.
“Are you speaking as a wife to her husband?”
A chuckled came from her as she raised her face to the sun. Another tingle surrounded his body and he continued to frown not being able to control his body’s reaction to her. Her eyes returned to his with a hint of mischief in them. “I am speaking to you as a fire maiden would her husband.”
“What do you know of the workings between a husband and wife? We could be doing this all wrong. Maybe you should be bowing to me all the time.”
Another laugh came from her and Aang rubbed his right hand over his stubble-covered head as his body hardened. He suddenly stood. Azula stopped laughing and stared up at him for a moment and then she returned to her work. She placed the seed in the last hole and began shaking the dirt from her hands. “What is wrong with you?”
Her voice made him angry as well as her question. She moved as if she was going to stand but her legs were not quite ready for her weight. She had been sitting for a while. She teetered as she tried to stand. Aang moved on reaction to save her the embarrassment of falling. His strong arms surrounded her body as he pulled her into his body. She stared up at him with surprise. He could feel her heartbeat racing against his chest. Their breaths mingled between them as blues met browns in a stare down.
What could ever happen to cause him to hold her as he was? Meng stood ten feet away from them watching the silent tension growing between them. She had tried for months to get a reaction from Aang. He never even tried to kiss her and here he was holding their enemy closer than he had ever held her. She could feel the lust between them even before they noticed it themselves. It was just as the fortuneteller told her. Lust would ruin her future. Of course, she said that out of spite because Meng left her. Their power drew them to each other no matter how much they fought.
They were opposites that could become one if she did not get them apart. The fact that Aang told her he did not kill her because there had been enough killing that day; only fueled her resolve to get rid of Azula.
She hated when he called her his wife. He started calling her by this title two days after they were married. At first, she thought it was just to anger Azula but she began to notice the way he said it. He seemed to enjoy having someone around fighting or not. Azula was not a mystery to him. He knew what she was and what she had done; so why this attraction. She was always there for him not Azula.
Meng held the basket she carried tighter and forced a smile on her face. “Fighting again I see,”
Azula turned first to see the peasant girl with the short,and slightly tangled,shoulder length hair standing there with a forced smile on her face. She was here to take Aang away and at this moment, she would welcome that. For some reason she could not control her heartbeat or her strength. She felt as if she would fall if he released her. She was angry with herself for still allowing him to hold her. Her hands moved towards his chest and rested there for a moment before pushing against it.
As if burned by fire Aang released her as they stared at each other for a moment longer. He turned towards Meng with a questioning look.
“I thought you would be hungry for lunch. I did not think she would prepare it for you knowing that you both would be working.”
Why had she really come here? She knew they were busy. “We are very busy Meng.”
The woman scoffed at him as she walked towards him. “No one is too busy to eat.
Aang looked at his wife as she glared at Meng. “I’ll finish the field you two can eat.”
He waited for Azula to turn and look at him before answering Meng. “Thank you for the offer but we are really busy and we have more work to do.”
A frown marred Azula's face.They did not work well together.They did not work at all when they were together, they argued, and she did not want to be without food and have to go into town and be harassed. “You should reconsider that she came all the way here from the forest where she was hiding to bring this meal to you.”
“She’s right Aang why would you want to work with a woman like her; a woman without a conscience or enough sense to change her clothing.”
Azula smiled. “You don’t have enough knowledge to play with me Meng.”
“Try me fire bitch.” A look of terror crossed Meng’s face as a spark of lightening appeared at the princess’s hands. Powerful arms surrounded Azula and forced her once again into Aang’s chest. Loud cursing filled the air as the former fire princess struggled against her husband.
“Go away Meng.” He was not even struggling to hold her. His voice was calm and gentle as he spoke to her. Meng just stood there staring at the struggling woman trying to get away from her husband and kill her.
“Meng … I want you to leave here NOW!” His face now wore a frown as he stared at her. Meng looked towards his angry face seeing his eyes whiting over and began quickly walking away.
He carried her pressed against his chest toward their home. Her back slammed into the solid door. A sound of pain escaped her as he released her. Azula prepared her retort to his treatment but thought better of it when she saw his eyes. “You would lose your head over her?”
She could feel power flowing from him and over her body. The Avatar state was ready to take control of this situation. She looked away from him as he stared into her eyes. “She has no right to come here. She wants me dead. I will not stand here and allow her to think she can speak to me that way. She is not what you think she is.”
The power began to fade and she turned to look at him. The amazing blues stared back at her. “You started the fight. If you know she wants you dead why bait her.”
“Because I can,” A smile formed on her lips.
He said nothing in response to her answer. He just stared at her and after a while, her smile faded. Silence reigned between them. She watched him look down her dirty body with a slow inspection. She became nervous for reasons she could not fathom. His eyes slowly returned to hers.
“You would kill me over her? Does she mean so much to you Avatar? It is apparent that she is not the right woman for you.”
He decided to ignore the last part of her question knowing it was just a start to the Meng argument that she seemed to enjoy conjuring up. “I will not let you harm anyone or let anyone harm you.”
Again, silence plagued them as they continued to stare at each other. Azula looked down his now dirty body with a slow inspection of her own. She returned to his eyes with a smile on her face. “I guess we can continue planting now that we both are dirty.”
Aang smiled. “I have already finished the other fields.”
A slight frown appeared on her face when she realized he could have easily helped her instead of causing the uncomfortable feelings in her body. “Having the ability to bend all the elements does have its benefits.”
“It does.” He continued to stare at her. She moved closer to him signaling she wanted to leave but he did not move. Her body pressed against his. She looked up at him with a questioning look. Her eyes were darker than normal and they made his body hard at the sight of them.
“Can I return to my work?” He moved towards her forcing her back against the wall. Her face showed surprise when she felt tremendous power flowing towards her body. She closed her eyes when it enveloped her.
“Did it get it all?”
His lips were at her ear as he spoke softly to her. He felt her rapid heartbeat and breathing as she recovered from his bending. He pressed his body tightly against her holding her up and keeping her close at the same time.
She could feel every muscle on his body. A small sound of surprise escaped her lips as his body moved closer. It was telling her of the power he held and her body responded with softness that did not know she had. She opened her eyes to find him staring at her with dark blue eyes. He was so close…too close. Azula placed her hands on his chest to try to push him back but he would not move.“I ca… can’t breathe…Aang.”
He moved back slightly to allow her a breath of air. She did not move to escape him. She just stood there staring back at him as strange feeling ran over her body at the loss of his. She did not need his touch to complicate their already complicated situation. She wanted to move away but her legs would not respond.
Aang watched her continue to recover wanting only to touch her again. He felt the lust flowing through his body for the first time at that moment. Had it always been there and he ignored it? The others noticed her beauty right away but he fought it. He did not know why he called her wife so easily but he was starting to see why as he looked down her clean dress. Her shapely body cushioned him perfectly. He quickly turned away from her and walked towards the field she was working on before Meng interrupted them.
He began to move the earth and placed the remaining seeds into the holes he created. He knew she watched him from the door. What attracted him to her? Aang looked back at her watching him carefully. His eyes travelled along her body and he knew what attracted him to her. He wondered come nightfall if her attitude towards him would change. She feared the night because of their closeness. Maybe she noticed the lust between them before he did and tried to diffuse it with meaningless arguments. She wanted to keep their situation without physical contact. It was too late for that.
What had she allowed to happen? She saw the way he looked at her. It was not like those in town it was different because he could do something about it and that frightened her. It frightened her that she felt something growing for his touch. He was powerful. She could not deny that. She had seen it firsthand. He knew how to wield his power and he was not afraid to use it. She had to turn him from his path of using it on her.
He finished the field, turned, and looked at her for a while. She was still where he left her. He watched panic cross her face as he walked towards her. She looked down at the ground when he stood before her. She felt the weight of her hair about her shoulders as he removed his belt from her hair. He lifted her chin forcing her to look at him. He lowered his lips towards hers and she did not fight to escape.
The sound of hooves on the upturned dirt turned Aang from his wife’s lips. A man who looked as if he had travelled a long way stared at him. He jumped down from his donkey cat and kneeled. “Avatar we have a problem with the dam in Hing Hi province. It threatens to break and destroy our lands. Please come I have come a long way and we need your help.”
A whistle from the Avatar brought Appa from his cozy stable. Aang directed the man to climb onto the beast and turned back to his wife. “Stay here and do what you have to do to stay unharmed.”
She nodded staring at him with dark eyes. “I will expect dinner cooked and not burned.”
A smiled crossed her lips and she slowly swayed her hips in a challenge. “You speak as if I will be here when you get back.”
A slow smile formed on his lips as he accepted her challenge. Aang pulled her into his body and stared down into the dark pools of lust staring up at him. “I can find you anywhere believe that princess.
She raised her chin towards him. “So many empty threats make you look weak Avatar.”
His lips abruptly slammed over hers in a hard and viscous kiss. Azula moaned in surprise as heat ravaged her body. He just as quickly pulled away. He released her and watched her disoriented and trembling body as he climbed onto Appa. He sat in the saddle watching her just stand there. “Go in the house.”
He commanded her as if she was his to command. She felt her feet move towards the door and before she knew it, she was inside watching him leave.

“It is pure evil what the Avatar has forced up on us. He has brought her into our goodness and made her his wife. He gets to enjoy the sweetness of her because he holds her life in his hands.” Jet looked around the small room at his odd collection of guests. They came here with the thought of either freeing Azula or harming Aang. All were attentive to him just as he wanted. He had their undivided attention the moment he mention the marriage of the Avatar and the Princess.
“While he lays on top of her fucking the poor princess into submission we get nothing but words that we should forgive her for what her father had done to us. Well I say that is not fair. We deserve to see her suffer not cry with pleasure because she belongs to the Avatar. I ask that you help me convince the Avatar to let the princess come into my care. I am the voice of the people and fought against evil longer than the air bender. If she were in my care, the people would know that she suffers me every night."
Jet hid his excitement from the crude grumbling from his guests. All but one seemed willing to help him. He could not defeat the Avatar and neither could his assembled guests; but they could distract him. They could help turn the people against Aang’s decision to marry Azula and keep her safe from harm. He did not want to kill her. He wanted to be the one with the power. He wanted everyone to say he had captured Ozai’s daughter. He wanted the fame the Avatar had and the only way to get it was to take Azula from him anyway he could.
King Boomey grumbled to himself as he sat to the right of the freedom fighter. He wanted answers from Aang. He wanted to know why he would choose their enemy for a bride. He had betrayed them. Their last conversation did not go well and ended with threats of harm from Aang. Boomey pushed him too far and was too stubborn to ask for forgiveness. There was only one course of action left. He had called on his friend from the Northern water tribe Pakku to assist him in obtaining answers from Aang, but he refused to join him. He told Boomey he was wrong and what Aang did is what they should all do… forgive. Their friendship ended when Boomey received that letter.
It was easy for Jet to turn the old man to his cause. His stubborness paved the way for his compliance.
Commander Zhao was another to attend the secret meeting in the cellar of Jet’s house. He came for very different reasons. He had no interest in either the Avatar or the Princess. He had problems of his own. What drew him to this meeting were the Yu Yan archers that had joined Jet and his freedom fighters. They had no loyalty towards him or the fire nation. They would capture Azula for Jet and let him have his way with her. Was he the only one that could see the destruction in the man? He knew this power well for it had cost him everything he held dear.
Zhao turned to his left to stare at the man sitting beside him. He was a water bender named Fuyu. He had heard Jet speaking to him alone. Apparently, the Avatar knew this man. He trusted this man and Jet knew this. Whatever he promised this man to make him think that he could trick the Avatar must outweigh death. It is all they would receive if they went up against the most powerful bender alive. He was a grown man now. They had no hope of defeating him.
“Why should we risk our lives for you? The avatar has fought for us and won. He deserves the princess. He deserves some prize for defending us.” The earth bender in Boomey’s army looked around for support and received none.
Jet held up his hands for silence. “He has chosen your enemy to bed. He cares nothing of how it will affect us; all he cares for are the long nights he spends with her. This is what he calls her punishment. Believe me it is no punishment for him for she has grown to be very pleasing to the eyes. I know that he no longer feels he owes us anything. He is the Avatar he should represent our wishes and relinquish her to me.”
The same earthbender shook his head. “I do not see why you need to have the princess. You are not the voice of the people. He is.”
The old earth bender king Boomey stood and faced the others in the room. “He must be made to answer our questions. Why has he betrayed us for her?”
The men in the room began to yell out their willingness to aid Jet. The Yu Yan archers raised their bows in the air pledging their allegiance to the cause. However, Zhao sat quiet and watched the proceedings. The objecting earth bender shook his head and walked from the room. One of the men in the shadows followed the man out.
Jet saw Commander Zhao through the crowd of men coming towards him. He knew he would be his greatest problem. The general was loyal to Ozai and Azula. It was possible he would warn the Avatar of the coming war against him. Jet had planned for his defection. With a nod of his head, another man hidden in the back of the room quietly moved out the door behind them.
“This is so very festive to see all of the once allies of the Avatar against him.” The booming voice of Zhao quieted the fevered group. The general stood and walked towards the men.
“Can you not see the dilemma that you face? He is the Avatar. He will destroy you. This man has fed you death for his own gain. He only wants what the Avatar has. He wants his power and will use anything to get it.”
Jet moved through the crowd towards the fire bender. “I want justice for all those your kind has displaced.”
“You want her and could care less about what the people want.”
A slow smile appeared on Jet’s face for only a moment so the others could not see it. Zhao moved away from him and headed for the door. “You walk away from the chance to redeem yourself general. A fallen man is a lonely one.”
Zhao turned to face Jet before opening the door. “I will not die for you and if any of you had any sense you would leave here with me.”
No one moved and Zhao continued out the door.

The vegetables were all different sizes and shapes. She could not stop her hands from shaking nor the aching soreness of her lips. She was nervous about his return home. Azula shook out her hands and took deep breaths to calm her jitters. All of this was his fault. She would remind him that this was not why she was here. The people wanted this not her or him. She had no doubt he would turn it into her fault.
A light knock at the door made her freeze. Aang had been gone for a while now and sunlight was fading on the horizon. Who would call on him at this hour?
The frail old man at the door knocked again this time calling for the Avatar in a small harmless voice. He could hear soft footfalls inside and the door began to open. A beautiful woman appeared before him. Her brown eyes were questioning his being here.
She was pleasing to the eyes, as Jet had said. He could see why the Avatar claimed her as his wife. Her long dark hair blew towards him as he stared at her. “What do you want and who are you?”
“I need the Avatar.” He spoke slowly as an old man would.
“What is your name?” Her voice was sharp and aggressive.
“My name is Boomey.” He waited for her to attack he was sure his name had reached the fire nation. There was only a frown from her. Apparently, Aang had not talked about him to her. He was nothing to her or Aang. Anger began to grow inside the king.
“He will return shortly I will tell him that you came by.” She began to close the door but an old wrinkled foot stopped it and forced it open. Azula refused to move back as the old man tried to gain entry into the house.
“I am afraid that you are not welcome inside my home.”
Boomey smiled. “And I am afraid that you won’t be here when he gets back.” His body began to transform in the doorway. Maybe many of those he fought before waited until he finished transforming to attack him, not Azula. She electrified the man and sent him flying from her doorway. She slammed the door shut and leaned against it trying to calm her heartbeat.
Azula closed her eyes when the house began shaking. There were earth benders on the Avatar’s land to take her away. She slowed her frantic heartbeat and concentrated on the power inside of her as objects began to fall around her. They wanted her to come outside and face them. Her eyes opened and lightening filled her body. It would not be an easy kidnapping for them.
~~~~~~~~~~
The man watched the Avatar as he flew them back to his home so he could retrieve his mount. The money given to him by the freedom fighter jingled in his pocket as he pulled the blade from his boot. The air bender was oblivious to his impending death. He would be famous and rich.
The assassin slowly made his move towards his target in the front saddle. However, that which he coveted betrayed him. The coin rattled getting Appa’s attention. He saw the shiny object the man carried and began to roll. A scream came from the assassin as he tumbled from the beast’s back. He felt a powerful hand grab his shirt collar and stop his fall.
His eyes opened to behold the Avatar glaring at him. “It does not matter if you kill me you will be too late. They will already have her by now.”
He never knew that wind could whistle. The sound in his ears would be the last thing he ever heard as he plummeted towards earth.
The air sliced through Aang’s clothing as Appa’s speed increased. Lightening lit the sky below them in a deadly display of power. Azula told them where she was and what she was doing. Aang leaped from the beast and dove for the light with staff in hand and the Avatar state taking over his body and mind.
