Chapter Three
“Talking”
‘Thoughts’
‘The voice’
Feral watched her guards with cold gold eyes. Ever since the two males had left, she had been watched. She was uncomfortable, the straight jacket was making her hot and sweaty as was the helmet that covered her head. When she turned her head the small distance the helmet would allow her. This room was smaller than the huge one she’d been kept in before perhaps escape would be easier. She turned her attention forward again and watched for her opportunity.
The guards watched her with tense expressions staying outside the limits marked by those mental rings that circled the gurney. They were a male and female.
The female had cream colored fur with spiky red hair and blue eyes. She was twenty-seven years old and her name was Kallen Starfeld. The male was her older brother, Robert, twenty-nine and soon to be married. He had the same colored fur and hair, though his was straight, and had brown eyes.
They were edgy and well armed since they’d been warned the subject was extremely dangerous despite being weak. The Company planned to move number seventeen to another facility and until she was, she required close guarding.
It had been quiet for some time now so both guards began to relax their tense stance somewhat. Suddenly a loud banging began ringing loudly in the still room making the guards jump.
Robert didn’t turn his attention away from the prisoner while his sister searched the room for the location of the noise. There was nothing to see and the subject hadn’t moved or made a sound.
Frowning, Kallen turned back to stare at number seventeen suspiciously. 'She must be doing something but I can’t see what.' Pointing her gun at the subject in a more business-like manner.
“The thing’s obviously using those mental paw’s to kick the floor. It’s the only part it can reach.” Robert growled certain he was right.
Her face grim, Kallen barked a sharp command. “Halt the kicking or I’ll shoot you where it will hurt a lot but not kill you.”
The banging stopped immediately. Kallen and Robert didn’t relax for some time.
Time passed and nothing more happened. The two guards eased their stance holding their weapons in a more relaxed manner.
“I can’t wait for this day to be over with.” Kallen murmured softly.
“Yeah, me too. I can’t wait to see my Courtney again. God, I really miss her.” Robert sighed.
“Can’t wait for the wedding night, huh?” Kallen said smirking.
“Hush, you.” Robert said playfully knowing his sister was teasing him.
“You know, when I was told my last day on the job would be doing guard duty, I thought ‘Wow! What an easy gig!’ She said grimacing.
“Oh yeah, easy, right....not when the subject is a monster.” Robert snorted then pulled his cell phone from his pocket.
Kallen frowned at it and asked, “Hey, is that a new cell phone?”
“Uh Huh. Courtney gave it to me just before I came here.” Robert said as he turned it on.
Suddenly alarmed Kallen warned, “What are you doing? You know you’re not supposed to have electronics in here. Much less turn it on.”
“Hey, take it easy. I got the green light to use it by Dr...” He started to reassure her when another sharp sudden bang caused him to startle losing his grip on his cell phone sending it sliding across the floor and coming to a stop just within seventeen’s cage.
“Shit, no!” Robert cried out upset and moving to retrieve it without thinking.
“Robert! No!” Kallen shouted reaching out to grab him but missing.
Everything seemed to happen at super speed. Kallen watched helplessly yet holding her weapon up as her brother reached the cage and began to reach for his cell phone. She could never have said what happened next. All she saw was Robert’s paw reaching for his phone past the rings that warned of danger when he seemed to freeze in place.
Robert was so focused on getting his cell he didn’t realize where he was until he touched the phone and felt something grab his paw and arm....hard and tight. He gasped in pain, fear spiking his scent as he tired to get free.
Kallen was torn. If she threatened to shoot seventeen she could cause her brother to be killed by her or the subject. Not knowing what else to do she laid her gun down and went closer to try and free him.
She slipped her paws under her brother’s arms till she could wrap her own arms around his chest and tried to pull him free but no matter how hard she tugged he remained trapped. Her brother was beginning to panic.
“Let me go!” He snarled angrily. “Let me go!”
Kallen added her cries of frustration and panic to his. “Stop it, you monster! Let my brother go!”
‘If we don’t break it’s hold…’ Kallen thought desperately she halted that train of thought quickly. She did not want to think what would happen if she couldn’t save her brother.
Before she could come up with an idea to free her brother she felt a hard push against her chest that ripped her paws off Robert and sent her falling on her ass outside the rings.
As she scrambled to her feet and thought to get her gun,she saw with horror her brother’s body had been pulled past the marked rings on the floor and was now still in kneeling position up against the gurney being held there by invisible paws.
His breath was knocked from his lungs when he felt himself being yanked forward still in a kneeling position. He turned his head up his eyes locking with a pair of cold gold ones. Fear raced down his spine at that uncompromising look of hatred then spiked when he felt something cup his face. Before either guard could react a ripping sound filled the air as his head was torn from his neck. Blood sprayed to cover the gurney and the floor.
Kallen stared in horror as Robert’s head rolled across the floor. “No!” She screamed in anguish.
Robert’s body hung in the air as invisible paws searched his pockets. A jingling sound snapped Kallen out of her shock and she stared in disbelief as keys that had been given to them earlier floated toward the subject.
Feral floated the keys toward her eyes to figure out which one would open the lock on the straight jacket. After only a moment’s study, the keys moved to the padlock and opened it allowing the her to writhe and twist her way out of the jacket. Using invisible ‘paws’ she broke the cables and ties holding her to the gurney. She quickly managed to get the helmet off her head as well.
All this had taken her only moments.
“No!” Kallen shouted. Fury filled her at the death of her brother as she picked up her gun and aimed it at the now free subject. With murder in her eyes she began firing at the heat and chest number seventeen.
Feral merely raised a shield to deflect the bullets away from her as she walked toward the furious guard ignoring the thud of the body she’d released without paying anymore attention to it. She trod through his blood tracking it toward his sister who was still firing at her. Kallen ran out of ammunition as tears fell from her eyes. As the subject made its slow approach she shook her head wildly and began backing up in fear.
“No! Stay away from me!” She cried out throwing the useless weapon at the approaching monster who shrugged it off with her mental ‘paws’. Kallen continued to back up until her back hit the far wall. Before she could gather her wits to escape seventeen was upon her.
Not hesitating hatred of all that had been done to her here boiling in her blood. Feral slashed out and cut the female guard in half. Blood rushed out like a fountain spilling onto the steel colored floor. The two parts of the body thudded to the floor but Feral was no longer paying attention or standing near. She had walked away her feet stepping in the rapidly spreading pool of blood as she moved to the two double doors she had seen the two toms exit through earlier.
‘You know for a second there, I thought you were going to let that Kat live.’ Her inner voice said pride lacing its voice.
“Nobody in this place of hell has the right to live.” Feral ground out.
‘Oh, really? Then what about those on the outside?’ The voice purred silkily.
“I won’t know that until I get out of here.” Feral said shortly.
‘You’re still clinging to those pathetic morals of yours, aren’t you?’ The voices scolded. ‘When will you understand.........’
“Shut up!” Feral snapped irritably. “I have things I need to do first. I need answers to all my questions and I need to find Helen’s sister.”
‘Face it! You’re no longer who you used to be. Why believe you’re still one of them?’ The voice pressed. ‘Accept the fact, you are who you were meant to be and take up your destiny. You cannot change your fate now.’
“Just because my body changed, doesn’t mean my mind has as well.” Feral snapped. “And my morals are not pathetic. They are what has kept me going despite all this. It’s what has made me willing to continue to live even though life has become a living hell.” She said adamantly.
‘But those morals won’t protect you when Kats see you now. They will reject and fear you. You owe them nothing.’ The voice insisted. ‘You are no longer anything like them.’
“I said shut up!” Feral snarled wishing not for the first time that the insistent voice would go away.
Ever since she’d been locked in this room the voice had kept hammering at her. It delighted in bringing up every decision or choice she’d made in her life. Holding them up to ridicule forcing her to see how those decisions had brought her to this point and how she didn’t owe the Kat race any loyalty. On and on the voice pressed its point. The voice acted like an ocean wave beating constantly against her mind washing a small part of her away each passing day.
But despite the constant yammering and pressure Feral refused to lose her sense of self completely. Her chosen career and choices to protect the helpless helped her withstand the voice. Her mind focused on getting her questions answered and getting revenge for Helen.
Toward that end she needed to find Cindy, Helen’s twin. She needed to know the truth about the Company her sister worked for. About how the Company was torturing and using Kats to change them to something else and how they had been responsible for killing Helen because she wasn’t willing to be cruel to the ones imprisoned by the Company. Feral needed to tell Cindy how her sister really died and not what the Company had told her to cover up their dirty deeds.
She still felt horrible guilt for what had happened to Helen. After all it had been her fault the sweet she-kat had died so brutally. ‘She’d been my first friend......my only friend and now she’s gone.’ Feral thought still mourning her loss.
It would be Feral’s indomitable will and stubbornness the same stubbornness her peers derided her constantly for that would help her resist the voice and continue to survive to escape this place. She wouldn’t rest till she had succeeded in putting an end to this Company finding out why they had done this to her and what their plans were.
Now was her chance to escape this room and hopefully find someone or some computer that would answer her questions but she had to get out of here first. She called up her mental ‘paws’ and made ready to punch through the heavy doors when suddenly began to move ponderously open on its own.
Startled she stepped back and waited tensely to see what was going to happen next. When the doors opened enough to see into the outside corridor it revealed three guards with a rolling gurney who gaped at her in shocked surprise.
Not giving them an opportunity to react she shot her ‘paws’ forward and tore into them brutally. In moments there was nothing left of the three Kats but shreds of meat and blood painting the walls and floor.
Some part of her mind was sickened by what she’d done but the part that was the voice was well pleased and sated on the carnage. Feral shut it out as she quickly picked a direction and found an elevator. Pushing the button she was greatly relieved when the doors snapped open almost immediately. She stepped in and studied the panel for a moment and pressed a button she hoped would take her to the surface. For them to do what they’d done to her and others she knew she had to be underground.
As she waited for the elevator to reach the upper floors, she stayed on alert. She knew a place like this would have video security cams everywhere so her escape would already set off alarms, it was only a matter of time, so she had to find the information she needed quickly while evading the hunt for her then find her way out even if she had to make a bloody swath through this place to do so.
She had been partly right. The main security room that had all the subjects under observation was being manned by a single tom. The four guards that had been manning the screens were all dead with a single shot to the head. The unknown tom sat in one of the rolling chairs and watched Feral make her escape to the elevator.
He smirked to himself as he watched her enter the elevator and push a button. He was all lean and sharp featured. His fur was walnut colored with black hair that was cut short. He was wearing a lavender shirt paired with black jeans. His slate blue colored eyes watched the monitor intently, a cold smile on his face. Laying on the console before him was a white lab coat with a name tag that said ‘Dr. Nakamura’ on it. Those that knew the odd, cold, older doctor would know instantly this male in his late thirty’s wasn’t him but apparently he had made sure those that knew the doctor never saw him and now here he sat monitoring an escaping subject with rapt interest.
“Now, now, Seventeen. I can’t let you get out that easy. It would seem too much like a setup if we did that, so...” The stranger said humorously as he leaned toward the monitor.
His paw drifted over the computer keyboard and set off the alarms that would alert the facility to an escaping subject. He had no worries that seventeen would escape for he had planned her escape route very carefully.
It had been he that had told Robert it was alright to use his cell phone that precipitated this chain of events. These two guards had never met Dr. Nakamura hence the reason he chose them and since they were now dead no one would be the wiser. So far everything was going as planned. He smirked as he watched seventeen jerk a little as the alarms went off but there was no other sign of panic in her body language. Her face gave away nothing of her emotions.
At hearing the alarms go off, Feral felt a moment of fright and anxiety but she pushed it away and focused on getting out of the elevator alive. Her thoughts were jarred by the ping of the elevator’s arrival. In that instant she had her shield up and ready.
The doors opened and the air was filled with the sharp reports of guns firing then her shield was being pounded by multiple weapons fire. The bullets veered off and others flattened and hit the floor with a chink noise. Nothing touched her. She continued to wait to see what would happen next. The guards outside the elevator halted their firing and move just enough to see into the car. They froze in shocked dismay as they saw their target staring back at them totally unscathed.
Eyeing them she moved forward keeping her shield between her and them as she left the car. Her shield shoved them back like one large paw. Frightened they began firing despite being shoved backward. That had been a fatal mistake as their bullets came back at them and took them out. Calmly but moving quickly, Feral hurried on.
Elsewhere in the facility a cell phone rang. Director Jason frowned in annoyance as he pulled it out to answer it. He was presently in the blue room that processed newcomers monitoring the testing of a new subject. Before he could answer his phone the alarms went off.
Cursing, he barked at the one on the phone, “Talk!”
The voice on the other end confirmed his suspicions of an escape. ‘Damn! How the hell did she manage to escape?’ He thought furiously. Into the phone he said, “Don’t let her reach the first floor! Force her back down to the lower levels where we can contain her. Order the guards to use .50 caliber tungsten ammunition.”
His orders were implemented immediately but it did them no good. Number seventeen passed through the guard positions easily. She realized she wasn’t quite to the top floor yet and was trying to find a staircase or another elevator to get there.
Director Jason received notification that none of their efforts were working and that number seventeen was still attempting to get to the first floor and was only one floor away from attaining that goal. Jason cursed loudly when informed of that.
“Director?” A soft high voice questioned cautiously.
He turned his head toward his new secretary, Selena Legatee. The lovely she kat was white furred, young, and had a fall of red hair. Her deep green eyes stared at him nervously, fear making her shiver slightly. She’d only just begun working for him and was concerned about what was going on.
She, unlike his former secretary, did know what the Company was about and the dangers involved. The monsters they were testing were deadly and she did all she could to aid Jason in studying them to find ways to control them. The fact one had escaped was a serious threat to all they were trying to accomplish.
“Selena, I want you to head straight to your quarters and lock your door. Do not leave until you’ve been given the all clear. Understood?” He ordered.
Selena nodded, “Understood, sir. Do be careful.” She said quietly in parting.
The Director only nodded and turned away as she left the room. He was already barking other orders to try and contain number seventeen. But the reports he continued to receive said none of his measures were working.
“Don’t we have heavier ammunition at our disposal?” He demanded speaking to the head of his security. He received a negative response to that. Jason was losing control and it made him angry. Tendrils of panic were just beginning to creep in but he squashed them quickly as he focused on the problem.
‘Damn it! Her mental ‘paws’ have gotten stronger and have a greater reach.’ He thought bitterly. ‘I can’t let her get away, she’s far too important.’ His mind raced with possible options.
Meanwhile on the second floor three guards tried to keep Feral at bay as she slowly approached them. They were losing as one dead guard attested already laying fetched up against a wall where he’d fallen victim of his own weapon’s fire.
“Stay calm! Just stay beyond the reach of her mental ‘paws’. We can’t be too close or we’ll get it like Harry did. Distance is the key to keeping your ammo from taking you out. Focus all your firing on her chest area and we should be able to break through her defense.” The head security guard ground out tightly.
“Alright, but didn’t Director Jason say that these things can use other stuff to cause harm so we needed to keep all items from her?” One of his guards asked worriedly.
Before their leader could respond to that, Feral who had paused over the body of the fourth guard had one of her 'paws' reach down and retrieved a pen from inside the Kat’s pocket. She held the pen as if it were a projectile and fired it forward like an arrow. It flew straight through the third guard’s forehead passing through it like butter. The Kat drop to the ground like a sack of flour....dead.
While the other two guards stood in shocked horror she moved forward again and shredded them before they could recover. She hurried down the corridor and encountered more guards. She managed to take out more but one was quicker than the others in escaping.
Thinking he would be heading for a way out to avoid her, she quickly followed him. She soon caught up to him pounding on a door frantically shouting at someone to let him in. Terror struck him as he saw her getting closer.
Frozen in fear all he could do was press himself tightly against the door he desperately wanted into. Seeing the young tom too scared to escape her, Feral began a motion to take him out when the voice that had been blessedly silent up to now, spoke up.
‘Wait a moment, my dear.’
Frowning she hissed softly, “What is it? I’m nearly out of here.”
‘Reach out but don’t kill him just yet. Let your paw pass into him. Anywhere is just fine.’ The voice instructed patiently.
Feral blinked a moment in puzzlement but slowly did as the voice bid her and allowed one of her mental ‘paws’ to pass through the young tom’s head. Her mental ‘fingers’ felt wet, slick strings of something. Some were very thin others as thick as her small pinky.
“What the heck is it I’m feeling?” She asked in confusion.
‘Those are his veins and blood vessels that run through his brain. Now, what I want you to do is pinch a couple of the thicker vessels between your fingers.’ The voice instructed her.
“Why should I do that?” Feral demanded voice still a mutter. She didn’t want the tom to hear her talking to herself.
‘Trust me. Just do it and you’ll see why. You want to learn to control this power of yours don’t you?’ The voice asked simply.
“Yes of course I do.”
‘Then do as I say.’
Still rather hesitant not trusting anything the voice said completely but knowing she did need to learn how to use her abilities, Feral finally did as the voice asked. She took hold of a couple of thicker vessels and pinched them tightly between her mental ‘fingers’.
At first nothing seemed to be happening. The tom continued to stare at her in fright eyes darting for an escape but then his eyes went wide in confusion before going slack and empty of all intelligence then after a few more minutes the tom slid to the ground in a heap without a sound. There was no sign he was alive and nothing beat against her mental ‘fingers’ any longer.
Shuddering in shock she hurriedly pulled her fingers out of the now lifeless tom and stared down at his body for some moments. “W-w-what did I just do?” She asked in barely a whisper.
‘You killed but in a more cleaner and quieter way, leaving no trace.’ The voice said sounding pleased.
“But…”
‘And the brain isn’t the only place you can use this technique. Just think what you can do to every organ in the body. A snip here.....a slice there.....and viola you’ve managed to kill from within the body even break bones.’ It said in a very cold, pragmatic way.
Feral felt a cold shudder run down her spine. What she could do was just too horrible to contemplate. “That’s horrible and cruel.” She finally managed to say.
‘Cruel! You call what you just did cruel?! What about what they did to us? What’s not cruel about that?! We were treated as if we were an unthinking animal. How much worse can that be?’ It demanded.
Feral couldn’t really answer that because in a way the voice was right. Still it didn’t feel right to her. To be able to kill that way seemed to be cheating in someway.
Suddenly the door the young tom had been trying to get open began to pull open slowly just as most of the heavy secure doors did down here. She had her defenses up immediately and waited tensely for what might come out.
However, nothing appeared. Suspicious Feral moved cautiously forward through the door. It turned out to be an entry point to another corridor. Frowning she stepped forward and began walking down it.
‘Something’s not right about this.’ She thought to herself. It had the feeling of some kind of trap or that someone was directing her movements like a puppeteer. She snarled inwardly at that thought. She had enough of people controlling her life she needed out of here now.
At the end of the corridor she came to a cross corridor. She halted and tried to decide which way to go. She looked right and was starting to turn left when she heard a strangled gasp. Flicking her head that direction she saw Selena standing there like a frightened rabbit.
Selena could only stare at Feral in horror. The subject was naked and covered in blood and other bodily fluids. As her heart stuttered at the sight her mind was frantically trying to decide if she should run or stay where she was as she didn’t know the range of this subject’s ‘paws’.
Feral made the decision for her. Reaching out with her mental ‘paws’ she snatched Selena by waist and pulled her closer.
Selena let out a sharp scream struggling against the ‘paws’. “No!”
The mental ‘paws’ pulled Selena close enough so that Feral could grab her physically. She released her mental ‘paws’ and used her own paws to grab the she-kat by the neck and twisted one arm behind her back ruthlessly.
“Get me out of here and you’ll live.” Feral hissed softly close to Selena’s ear.
“Promise?” Selena squeaked breathlessly.
“Well that depends on the Director.” Feral said icily “Now move.”
Selena let out a little cry as Feral pushed her forcefully. Using her free paw Selena pointed down the corridor Feral had been heading down. As one they moved down the quiet corridor meeting no one.
They went on walking down many more hallways till they came to another elevator. Selena pushed the button to bring the elevator down to their floor. It soon pinged then opened. They stepped in then Feral had them turn around so that Selena was facing the door. The car reached the first floor and the doors slide open allowing them to step out into yet another hallway. They moved out once more with Selena pointing out the direction to take.
At the end of the corridor there was a sharp corner and when they turned it they were met by twenty some guards with Director Jason standing grimly behind them. Both sides froze. Feral stared at them her hold on Selena tight and painful. The twenty guards were divided up with one half kneeling and one half standing and all pointing high powered weapons at her.
Jason cursed mentally to himself at the sight of Selena being held hostage by number seventeen.
“Director! Please help me!” Selena begged.
“Let her go, Seventeen!” Jason ordered coldly.
“No! And that’s not my name!” Feral hissed coldly holding her prisoner in front of her.
Jason growled then leaned close to one of the standing guards and asked softly, “Can you get a clear shot?”
“No! Not without hitting Ms. Legatee.” He said barely opening his mouth.
He glared at Feral. ‘Of course she would know what to do in this situation. She’s after all the former Chief Enforcer.’ He thought bitterly clenching his jaw in anger. He looked at Selena a moment then at Feral. ‘I can’t let her escape for any reason. Those were Dr. Nakamura orders.’ He sighed knowing he had no other recourse.
“Sir, what are your orders?” The guard asked softly.
Jason relaxed having made his decision. Speaking loud enough for all to hear he said, “I’m sorry Selena but you’re expendable, number seventeen is not.”
Silence filled the corridor as Selena stared at the Director in shock and horror.
Feral’s hatred for Jason increased tenfold when he said that. No life was sacred or special to him. Only his mission was important. She felt sorry for the she-kat caught in this nasty situation.
‘How could you think he wouldn’t sacrifice her? After all his guards didn’t hesitant to kill to Helena. So why should he be any different for this one?’ The voice said in a dark ugly tone.
Furious at the voice and unwilling to listen to it Feral made a quick decision. Using her mental ‘paws’ she released Selena snatched her with her other ‘paws’ and hurled her back around the corner they had come. She tossed the she-kat a bit harder than she’d planned and heard the body smack a wall around the corner. She hoped she hadn’t killed her trying to save her.
She had no more time to think about that as she took advantage of her sudden movement to charge the line of guards. They never got a chance to fire nor defend themselves. The standing guards were instantly beheaded as she sliced from one side through to the other. The kneeling ones felt the falling bodies hitting them freaking them out.
Jason had stepped back from the line of guards which was why he didn’t end up beheaded himself. He stared in shocked surprise at the carnage and blood that flew around him decorating his clothes.
In the chaos Feral plunged past them and continued down the corridor at a run. Jason watched as Feral ran past him without touching him at all. Growling, he reached into his pocket and brought out a handheld radio.
“She’s on her way to the emergency exit. Seal corridor twenty-six now! She must not escape!” Jason barked into the radio.
As Feral finally reached the emergency exit she heard a rumbling sound through the wall then a sliding metal panel came down to block her escape. She turned around and found her back track was now blocked as well. She was effectively trapped.
Hissing furiously to herself, she placed her five fingered paws on the door tested its strength. It was a very thick solid piece of metal. She stepped back and attempted using her mental ‘paws'.
Watching Feral make her attempts to get out, the strange tom reached out to the keyboard once more and pressed another button. The panel slid back up out of view leaving the exit open to her easy access. Feral froze and stared. ‘That proves it! Someone is playing with me, like a mouse in a maze.'She thought angrily.
‘What are you waiting for?! This is our chance at freedom! Take it!’ The voice cried out urgently.
Still Feral hesitated every sense in her warning her this was not good but what other choice did she have. Still not happy she carefully stepped to the exit and pushed open the door. To her surprise it lead outside. That was a bit confusing since she’d not made it to the upper floors yet. She could only guess the place sat against a hill or mountain and allowed other floors access to the outside.
Regardless it was outside and she didn’t hesitate to step through after so very long trapped inside. It was night and a moon rode high in the sky. The feel of the cool grass under her feet was heavenly after so much time walking on nothing but steel surfaces. She could hear water nearby and walked further out until she could see the ocean pounding against the shore the moonlight glittering like many stars over the constantly moving water.
Looking around, she found her guess to be right. The facility was built into the side of a mountain. Only about four stories showed at the top of the mountain its wall of glass offices reflecting the moonlight.
Turning her head away from her former prison, she searched around her environs for a direction away from here. The cliff she stood on ran along for about a mile before descending gently toward a small valley. Making her decision she began to hurry along the cliff. She had a strong suspicion she was on an isolated island. It was important she find a way to get off it.
Meanwhile Jason had just received word his carefully prepared trap had been breached and his subject was now on the outside. There was no way the sealed panel could have been raised unless someone had done it purposefully. He didn’t have time to find out who could have done it right now. It was more important to retrieve number seventeen.
He barked into his cell phone, “I don’t want excuses! Just send me a sniper!”
Putting his phone away Jason turned from Selena’s body before heading off to meet the sniper. Feral would have been upset to learn she had unintentionally killed her hostage after all but that was not his concern right now. The sniper met him near the door Feral had gone through. The two of them went outside and looked around then spotted the missing subject moving down the cliff side at a fast pace.
Glaring at the departing form Jason hissed his order. “Finish her off with a single bullet. Make it count since she’s not going to let you get a second chance.” He warned.
“Don’t worry, sir. This is a tank piercing round. It will go through anything including her ‘paws’. Besides she isn’t looking back here so won’t know its coming until its too late to repel it.” The sniper assured him then raised his weapon took careful aim then fired.
What the sniper hadn’t counted on was this particularly subject survived by her special talent for sensing danger. That came to her rescue in the form of a tingle at the base of her neck. She had just enough time to raise her defenses before the high powered bullet came hurtling at her.
Unfortunately, the force of the impact was so violent she only succeeded in keeping it from penetrating but not from sending her over the cliff. She stumbled and fell toward the ocean below.
“No! She kept it from striking her. She’s still alive!” Jason said watching her fall. “Send in a search team and bring her back!”
“Yes, sir!” The sniper said amazed the creature had sensed the strike and managed to keep from being taken out. He would not underestimate these things again.
A search team gathered quickly and took a boat out and began an extensive search for the subject who should have been either swimming or floating on the surface after such a long fall. But some twelve hours later there was no sign of her.
Jason was not happy. ‘It’s just not possible she could have drowned. No, with her luck, she would have survived the fall and is even now on the shore somewhere recovering.’ Jason thought with certainty.
Turning to his head of security he ordered, “Alert all police forces on the mainland about number seventeen. There’s still a chance she could be alive. Tell them that she is an escaped murderer from the prison. I want to be notified immediately if she’s found or if anyone fitting her description appears. Understood?!”
“Yes, sir.” His chief answered then left quickly leaving Jason alone with his worried thoughts.
Early morning on the mainland with the sun not quite up yet a group of toms were settling around a campfire on a remote section of beach a long ways from the nearest town where only outlaws tended to go. They had been sleeping in a sheltered cave above the surf line and were now making a meager breakfast before heading off on various missions of mayhem and theft before returning here again to share their booty.
One of their number went for a solitary walk to stretch his legs and look about. Sometimes the waves would send something interesting their way if one just searched about. He was a scruffy looking tom with black fur and patches of white on his chin, fingers and one spot in the shape of a star on his forehead. His copper eyes searched the stretch of sand keenly in the slowly brightening light of day.
It wasn’t long before he spotted something. His heart soaring with excitement he hurried to see what it was. The waves pushed it continuously but it never moved. When he got close enough he paused in shocked surprise. ‘What the fuck?’ He thought. Pulling out a small flashlight from his pocket he shone it on the object to see it better. He knelt down and prodded what appeared to be a body but unlike any kind of Kat he’d ever seen.
The body had the ears and tail of a Kat but nothing was familiar except its shape. It had no fur but skin which was a dark brown color with very long wet black hair that lay splayed out on the sand and back of the body. He rolled the body a little and found it was a female.
“Huh? What kind of fem is she?” He wondered in bewilderment. Deciding to take the unconscious female creature to his boss, he put his flashlight away and carefully slung the surprisingly tall fem over his shoulder and carried her back to his campsite.
As he approached he could see the group had stoked the fire anew from the night before and the smells of food drifted to him. He hurried his steps and was soon coming up to the fire and calling for his boss.
“Hey, Boss! I found something!”
“What is it, Aaric?” A large tom asked. He was broad with tan gold fur and black hair that was slightly green tinged due to the hair gel he liked to use to hold it back from his face. His one brown eye looked up, his left eye was closed completely due to a scar over it.
“Have you ever seen a fem like this, Justin?” Aaric asked coming into the camp light and laying his burden down for all to see.
The big Kat stood up and knelt down beside the stranger. He brushed her hair from her face and frowned down at the strange looking female. Blood was running down her face but he couldn’t see what was causing it. ‘Must be in her scalp somewhere.’ He thought dismissively.
“Well?” Aaric asked again.
“No, can’t say I’ve ever laid eyes on a female like this before.” Justin grunted. “But we still might be able to sell her. Though it might be tough with her not having any fur like that. Could be a turn off to some of our clients.” He mused thoughtfully.
“Yeah but someone still might want her because she’s odd!” Another of the group piped in. He was a cream color with gray stripes. He’d dyed his hair blue and had dark brown eyes.
“And maybe more if she’s pure!” Yet another of the group said sagely. He was a titan color and had amber gold hair with one gray eye and one hazel.
“Mind if I do the checking on her, boss?” Aaric asked already extending a paw toward Feral’s body.
Before Justin could say anything in response, Feral’s eyes snapped open. It had been alert since Aaric carried her to the campfire. It was the one part of Feral, she knew as the voice inside her head. Over the years the voice had listened to everything that had happened to Feral since it had first awakened within her mind.
For a very long time, it was merely a voice that was barely heard by its host but over the years it had grown stronger and stronger feeding off all the negative feelings her host experienced without Feral's knowledge. But like a kitten, it was limited in what it was able to do. It's abilities had strengthened when Feral was altered to this new shape but it still couldn't do more than badger it's host.
However with her host unconscious she could finally take action of a sort. It had kept Feral from drowning and was grateful the mainland was so close or they might have drowned despite it's efforts.
Once it got their body to the beach, it let her rest for a time but was caught off guard when Feral was picked up. It decided to wait and see what was going on and played 'dead' as it were.
It continued to play possum trying to determine who or what these toms were and now that she was certain they were slave traders there was no longer any need to pretend. Besides the voice had no intention of letting that tom touch Feral to determine if she was ‘pure’.
Moving swiftly the voice raised Feral's defenses using the mental ‘paws’ to strike out at the males. It snatched up all the toms that were near enough including Aaric and sent them hurtling out into the water.
Justin was frozen in shock as he watched three of his tough gang members be hurled by nothing he could see. The rest were just as confused. They had jumped to their feet and were looking around for the danger not knowing it was the female laying in their midst.
“What the hell just happened!?” One of the toms said in a scared voice.
The ones not in the water were standing together trying to determine what had happened and none noticed Feral was now sitting up.
Justin was the first to take note. Confusion turned to fear as cold gold eyes settled on him. This strange female reeked of danger. His mind screamed at him to flee.
The female stood up and continued to glare at him and the others who also froze at the scary glare. Suddenly the female smirked a dark kind of evil smile that sent a deadly chill down their spines making their fur raise up.
On the island Feral had recently been imprisoned the Company was in a panic. Many were being questioned on just how subject number seventeen could have been able to escape. Jason stood staring dispassionately down at what was left of the two guards that had been on duty in seventeen’s cell. The sound of footsteps coming near made him look toward the door. He stiffened when he saw Dr. Nakamura enter the room. The old Kat looked around before setting his gaze on Jason.
“How?”
Jason paused to gather his thoughts. “My apologizes, sir. I’ve checked everything, the restraints, the cell, the security system, the sealing system.......nothing was wrong with any of it. However, we did find the security team in the video room dead and no way to determine who had done it. Also there’s the odd business of the sealing door opening to allow her to escape. I know for a fact she was trapped in that corridor but someone had to have reopened the seal. I haven’t been able to find out who it was.” Jason said in frustration.
Nakamura frowned a moment. This meant a traitor might be in their midst but at the moment that would have to wait. “We can figure that out later. Right now, capturing number seventeen is our highest priority.” Dr. Nakamura said firmly turning way to walk out.
“Sir, capture her? Not kill?” Jason called out to him in confusion. The order was a surprise.
He didn’t answer Jason unvoiced question but said instead, “Use the Special Assault Team. SAT should be able to handle it. If not…” Dr. Nakamura said shrugged then left Jason to handle the problems of the security breach and trying to recapture her.
Once back in his office, Hiroak Nakamura sat down behind his desk. He sat there for a long moment in silence before turning his computer on and typing in a few key words. A picture of Feral popped up showing her test results they had run. One particular test held his attention. It showed Feral was capable of breeding in her new form.
She had been capable of breeding in her male form but no one was certain he would after undergoing the change. Normally, they were sterile but Feral surprised them and stayed fertile much to his delight. He chuckled. His team might have been surprised but he wasn’t. He had seventeen collected specifically because he knew she could breed.
“So my old friend. You tried to hide her even after Number One had appeared and your wife was murdered.” He muttered, a smile tugging at his lips. He leaned closer to his computer and stared intensely at Feral when he had been first brought to the facility. The dark tom glared at the camera with a cold stare a measuring system showing behind him. “Well Richard, it looks like you failed to keep her hidden though you did make a good stab at it.” He allowed himself a deep evil chuckle.
He stop a moment later but a grin still graced his lips as he said darkly, “Don’t worry, Seventeen. Soon you’ll be back where you belong and fulfilling your destiny just as I planned. Then the era of Kat kind will come to an end and the new world of the Savannahs shall begin, my dear Queen.”
He began laughing again. The thought of seventeen escaping didn’t halt his mirth nor did it cause any more than a temporary stall to the project. When she was recaptured, she would be shipped to another facility where she would meet her King and then things would move more swiftly after that. It had been the reason she was to be moved today and that security hadn’t been as tight.
One thing did trouble him though. How she had escaped so easily and who had helped her in doing so. It was clear that someone knew security would be weak today. They had a traitor, but despite that his plan was only slowed but not stopped. It would still go on and be ready when she was returned. No matter what, all the pieces of his plan would come together and nothing would stop it.
