Chapter 3
Danny had to admit, Dayston General did look significantly nicer than any hospital he'd been in. First of all, it was enormous, three large buildings were required to house the facility. The outside was so brilliantly designed that it hardly looked like a hospital at all. The place looked more like an art museum. Leave it to Vlad to go all out.
“Stop here Daniel, we'll go the rest of the way on foot.” Vlad called out to Danny as the two of them slowed their pace.
“Why? If we're going to fight this new ghost, then shouldn't we actually be ready to fight?”
“We don't know what she is yet. For all we know, she could be completely harmless. The only reason I brought you here at all was to see if you could identify her. Appearing in our ghost forms would only frighten her. Not to mention, the staff might be slightly disturbed.”
Regretfully, Danny let himself sink towards the ground, just out of view of anyone in the hospital. Switching back to Danny Fenton only took a moment, and by the time he turned around, he could see that Plasmius had already turned back into Vlad.
“If this turns out to be some kind of trick Plasmius....”
“As I said before Daniel” Vlad rolled his eyes “If I wanted to attack you, I would have done so outright. I would not have lured you out here were a witness could easy spot us. Will you calm yourself?”
Vlad didn't wait for Danny to reply, instead walking ahead of him, leading him into the building. Still on his guard, Danny tentatively followed after him.
The automatic glass doors pulled apart as Danny and Vlad approached them. Before the Billionaire even set foot inside the building, Doctors and nurses were rushing towards him, greeting him cheerfully.
“It's wonderful for you to drop by again Mr. Masters. Three times this week isn't it?” A young, dark haired doctor gracefully maneuvered himself towards the two halfas.
“Yes, Doctor Moore, I enjoy visiting here.” The Vlad Danny knew vanished and the skillful business man took his place. “I'd like you to meet my apprentice, Daniel.”
Apprentice? Danny smiled as he shook the Doctor's hand, making a mental note to rip Vlad a new one for that later. He distinctly remembered that night, three years ago, when Vlad had tried to convince Danny to be just that. Danny was now seventeen, and he thought Vlad had forgotten his little proposal. But what if he hadn't?
“Anything you need help with while you're here Mr. Master's?” Dr. Moore asked the older man eagerly.
“No, no Doctor, I just wanted to show Daniel around a bit. We'll be out of you're hair before long.”
“Sir, this is your building. Please don't feel rushed to leave.” Danny narrowed his eyes slightly, not liking the tone in Doctor Moore's voice, nor the way he batted his eyes suggestively at Vlad, but dismissing it. He'd just met this man, and he certainly seemed nice enough. He was probably just being friendly towards the man who was now signing his paychecks. Even if he wasn't, it was none of Danny's business.
“I won't.” Vlad turned to Danny, clasping his hand on his shoulder once again. This time, however, he did not deem it necessary to try and break Danny's shoulder in the process. “We should be going now.” He smiled at Dr. Moore as he steered Danny towards the nearest, glass, elevator.
Once they were safely inside the glass box, Danny broke free from Vlad's grasp. “Your apprentice? Since when am I your apprentice?”
“Would you have preferred I told him the truth?” Vlad asked dryly.
“No...just don't call me that, okay?”
“If you wish.”
The elevator trip was mercifully short. Danny always hated riding in elevators, suppose they stalled, or worse, fell? Granted, he was a ghost now, and phasing out of here wouldn't be much of a problem, but he still couldn't let go of the deep rooted fear. Not to mention the fact that he hated the cheesy elevator music.
The door pulled open once they were on the third floor. Just like all the others, this floor was jam packed with nurses and doctors. Most of them offered Vlad a respective smile as they past him by. Danny wondered how exactly Vlad wanted to do this without being seen, hospitals weren't exactly the most private place for ghost-fighting, anyone could walk in at any time.
“Fourth door on the left Daniel. The door is open, walk past it slowly. If we don't see anything, we'll keep on walking, if we do, we'll double back.”
Vlad kept his pace slow, allowing Danny to keep up with him without a problem. Slowly, they past doors one, two, three.......
The door to room four was flung wide open. Danny instantly slowed as they passed it, trying to peer in only with his peripheral vision. He needn't have worried, he could have seen the mysterious girl from space.
She was very pretty, long chestnut hair swung gracefully down to her mid-back, small strands framed her heart-shaped face. Dark brown eyes gazed, full of sorrow, down at the sleeping patient in the hospital bed. She wore clothes any modern teenager would wear, jeans and a sweater, which looked too hot for the warm spring weather. Something about her was distinctly familiar, though Danny could tell, unmistakably, that she was no longer one of the living. She was hovering lightly, instead of sitting in one of the nearby chairs. However, that was the only thing about her that was remotely mystical.
“I see her.” Danny hissed out of the corner of his mouth to Vlad as the passed the room.
“I thought you would.”
The two halfa's ceased their walking slowly just before they reached room five. Abruptly, they turned on the spot so they were facing room four again. Danny moved to enter, but noticed that Vlad didn't follow.
“You're not coming?” Danny whispered softly, not wanting to be overheard.
“She's seen me Daniel, in my ghost form. She's afraid of me.
“Not surprising. You have that effect on most women.” Danny grumbled sarcastically, but loudly enough for Vlad to hear.
“I think it might be best for her to speak with someone closer to her own age.” Vlad wouldn't let his face show how much Danny's little comment hurt, although the young halfa knew he hit home.
“Fine.”
Danny turned his back towards Vlad and walked into the room. Although the young girl looked up when he walked into the room, she did not let her gaze linger. Clearly, she didn't know that Danny could see her.
“Before you decide to run away” Danny looked at the girl as he spoke “I want you to know that I'm not going to hurt you.”
Clearly shocked, the girl, still hovering, leaped back several feet. Her eyes flickered towards the nearest wall and, briefly, Danny feared he would have to chase after her.
“I'm not going to hurt you!” Danny repeated, louder this time.
“But you're going to try and make me leave.” She replied in a soft, mouse-like voice.
“Make you leave?”
“Like that other one does, the one who's always chasing me out.”
Danny paused. How was he going to explain that Vlad was just curious? He didn't trust the man himself, how was he supposed to convince a perfect stranger to trust the older halfa?
“We just want to know what you are.” Danny looked pointedly at the sleeping boy laying in the bed. “We want to make sure that you don't want to hurt anyone.”
The girl followed his gaze towards the boy. “Worse than I already have, you mean?”
“Already have?” The halfa could feel his ghost side trying to get out. Apparently the girl was dangerous.
“In the car.” She continued in her soft voice. “Two months ago.”
Car...two months ago.....Suddenly, Danny remembered where he knew this girl.
“You were in the papers, you're car got hit by that drunk driver!” Danny let his voice rise a bit too enthusiastically. Pain instantly shot through the girls lovely face.
“I did this to him. I was driving.” Tears slowly began to fall from the girl's eyes. “He's my brother....only fifteen. I wasn't supposed to take the car that night......” Her gaze shot towards the wall again as her tears began to flow more freely.
“Wait!” Danny called out to her just as she began to move towards the wall. “Don't go, I can help you. You name was...Amanda, right?” Danny guessed wildly. He hadn't paid too much attention to that newspaper article, and it was a few months ago...
“Adrienne.” She corrected him, not at all offended. And you can't help me.
Danny heard Vlad's shoes walking across the linoleum floor before the older halfa entered the room. Before Danny could shout out a warning to him, tell him that this girl, Adrienne, wasn't exactly in the best of moods, Vlad already crossed the threshold.
“Oh!” Adrienne squeaked, alarmed, as she moved to make her escape.
Before Danny could stop her, she took off through the window of her brother's room. The shades were pulled down, and by the time Danny opened them, she was already gone.
“Damn it.” Danny hissed. “Good going Vlad, I was just getting her to talk to me too. What did you do to her anyway, why is she so afraid of you?”
“I, or rather Plasmius, may have shouted at her the first time we met.” Vlad, unabashed, took a few steps closer to Danny. “I heard her little sob story too.”
“She's harmless.” Danny sighed as he pulled himself away from the window.
“For now. We still don't know what she is Daniel, she could grow violent as time goes on.”
“Well, it's going to be pretty hard figuring out now, considering you chased her away.”
“She'll be back.” Vlad shrugged confidently. “She's apparently tied to her brother, we'll have our chance later.”
“We?”
“Yes, Daniel, we. I discovered Adrienne in the first place, don't think you'll be continuing this without me.” Vlad smiled at him sweetly. “And, now that you have met her yourself, I know you won't be able to resist.”
“Bastard.” Danny growled, knowing fully well that Vlad was right.
The billionaire merely continued to smile. “Shall we go back to my manor then? So we can put together some sort of scheme?”
“To help her.” Danny finished definitively. He didn't want Vlad to mistake his role in this. The idea of spending time alone with Vlad, probably in a sealed off room in his manor, sent a shiver up Danny's spine. He had nothing to be afraid of, he was sure he could hold his own if Plasmius decided to attack, but he was fairly certain that the shiver wasn't from fear.
“Of course.”
A/N: Okay, I know there isn't steam yet, but it's coming. It would be too soon to introduce any just yet. Maybe, next chapter, things between them will pick up a bit. Also, more of Adrienne!
