Seven months had passed. Things had been set into a rhythm that Mona got used to. Sparring with Raph, meditation and Kata with Leo and Splinter. Her progress made the old rat smile. But she never made that big of a deal out of it. Always being calm and not making it seem that serious. Mona and Leo had gone to April’s apartment to celebrate with her and Casey. April’s antique business was really starting to take off again and got them some great acclaim. Much drinking, including silly drinking games happened. Mikey, Don and Raph came half way into the party and partook some themselves. She could feel in the room that things were changing. The brother seemed like they wanted a change. She wondered if this meant everyone separating and going to different horizons.
She let a sigh escape her as she sat on the roof ledge. Watching how the faint clouds swirled in the sky above. Her last beer still hooked between two fingers of her left hand. She had nearly half of the liquid still left. The alcohol had been making her head spin. A gentle breeze skimmed along her back and played with strands of her hair.
“I thought you’d be out here,” A voice said.
She glanced over her shoulder to see Leo standing not to far behind her. She turned back to look at the view and he walked towards the ledge. She then heard him sit down next to her and faintly heard the sound of liquid swishing around in a bottle.
“It was too nice of a night to stay cooped up inside,” She replied.
“Or you had your fill of Raph complaining,” He said.
She gave a small smile, “Ya got me, Leo.”
He returned her small smile with one of his own.
“What’s the plan now?” She asked. “Everyone seems to be wanting to go their separate ways.”
“Some are,” Leo said.
She smiled and leaned her weight on her free hand.
“I liked your dojo idea,” she said.
He raised an eye ridge at her, she then gently bopped her head on his shoulder.
“You were actually listening to me ramble on about that?” he asked.
“Yes,” she said. “You think I’d ignore you? Come on Leo. Give me some credit.”
She could feel something swimming in her stomach. A familiar sensation, one she had ignored.
“You should do it,” She said, looking away from him. “It’ll give you a chance to give kids a fighting chance to survive. To not get sucked into gangs and early deaths.”
She could feel him watching her. For some reason it brought a pink flush to her cheeks and made her want to cover her eyes. She gave a nervous chuckle.
“Really been thinking about it have you?” he asked.
She bit her bottom lip, “Yes. It’s something else to think of.. A good distraction.”
That feeling in her stomach grew heavier and now bore spikes. Living along side Leo and the others. How could she have not known what was happening? Right underneath her nose… In her own head… That idea scared her. She got up and made her way back to the access back to the inside. He watched her with a confused expression.
Once she had nearly run down the fire escape she found herself tapping the back of her head on the wall, just next to the window back into April’s apartment This wasn’t like her. Mona Lisa was not one to be chicken shit. She wanted to help him bring the Dojo to life. To train students along side him. Sip Sake out in the open with him, underneath a cherry tree. She exhaled and chose to walk into the main room. She found Mike passed out on the couch with Raph sprawled out on the floor. She flicked off the TV set and covered the two of them up with a throw blankets. She flicked off the lights and heard Leo step back into the living room. She glanced back at him.
“Guess they aren’t going home tonight,” Leo said quietly.
“Doesn’t seem like it,” Mona softly replied.
She headed down the hall past April’s room and towards the guest bedroom. Once again she heard him behind her. She opened the door up and groped the wall for the switch. She flicked the light on and sat down on the edge of the bed and pulled off her shoes. Leo sat down next to her and flumped back onto the bed. She chuckled.
“ ‘Hey Mona you care if I steal a side?’” Mona said, mimicking Leo.
“ ‘Sure Leo,’” He said back, mimicking her.
She whacked him on the thigh with a hand and he chuckled. She then flumped back onto the bed herself.
“I’m not drunk,” Leo said.
She snorked, “No shit. I’ve seen you drink more than that in Sake and still be coherent.”
He yawned, “Sake is different. Specially if it’s served cold or warm.”
She pressed a hand to the side of his arm. This made him look at her.
“… You guys are really cold blooded,” She mused.
He gave a light smile, “And you’re warm blooded.”
“Yeah,” Mona said.
Leo pulled the blankets out from underneath him. After a moment Mona followed his suit and curled up under the blankets. At first they had ample space between them.
“Humor me,” Leo said.
“Hmmm?” She asked.
“Where do you think the Dojo should be?” He asked.
She turned the switch on the small lamp near the bed to shut out the light. She then moved to find a arm in her path. The arm moved and she found herself being pulled towards the owner. She thought of protesting for a moment but chose against it.
“Maybe somewhere downtown, near major bus and train routes. Easy access,” She said.
She draped a arm across his chest and felt him put a arm around her back.
“I agree,” He said yawning.
She felt a sigh escape her and a yawn wasn’t that far behind. A few more minutes passed before sleep overcame them. Several hours passed with peaceful and calm sleep. She woke up while it was still dark and made her way to the bathroom and back. When she came back in she found Leo semi awake. In her sleepy daze she pushed her body against the door and it clicked shut behind her. She then made her way back towards the bed. He was partially on his back and she climbed back into bed. She curled herself up to his chest aiming to go back to sleep.
A heavy and strange feeling swirled in her stomach. Made her feel warm and anxious. He shifted underneath her a little and she looked up at him. She wasn’t quite sure how it happened, but she found her mouth brushing against his. She thought it was a accident at first. But it happened a second time. Hands went into her hair as the kiss grew deeper. Everything passed her by in a strange haze. She didn’t remember her clothing coming off with his help. She had let her hands wonder and found herself curious. She was on her back and he was partially against her, body close to hers. Her fingers went down his plastron and then lower. She watched his face as her fingers went around hard muscle covered by smooth cool skin. She moved her hands along there, His mouth was against her neck and she could hear his breathing change as her hand movements did. He moved a arm and she found his once free hand now resting between her thighs. Digits moving in a slow swirl there.
Her mind was turning foggy and full of haze, she stopped her hand movements and pulled him towards her. One hand went to the side of his neck while her mouth brushed his. He took his hand away from between her thighs and they both moved. She hitched up one of her legs and felt the lower plates of his plastron hit her stomach. There was a push and a stab of pain inside of her. But there was no effort from either of them to stop. Voices and breathing were kept quiet, his arms around her back in a close embrace. This went on for several moments until the impending release came. Sweat mingling they lay there for a while, almost looking lost. Still tangled up together they fell back into sleep.
When she woke up with daylight she was confused. The fog in her mind slowly went away and she yawned. She started to get out of bed but found arms wrapped around her waist. She could feel a mouth on the back of her neck.
“Are you going to wake up?” She asked quietly.
“Been awake,” he replied. “Didn’t feel like moving.”
She moved to lay her side to face him. He looked slightly groggy.
“You… uh,” She said. “Realize what happened last night?”
He looked to be in thought a moment, “ …. Oh hell.”
She blushed, “I don’t know exactly how that even…”
He exhaled and covered his eyes with a hand, “It hadn’t been my intention.”
“It wasn’t my intention either. Things… just happened,” Mona said.
He let her go and sat up, rubbing a sore spot on his neck. She sat up herself and watched the view out the window.
“I… don’t regret it,” She said. “I just think… our timing was…”
“Off,” Leo said. “I have no regrets either.”
She got out of bed and recollected her clothing and got redressed. He got up himself and made his way to the door once she was dressed. They walked out into the living room to find Leo’s brother still fast asleep. April was in the kitchen seemingly watching the brothers sleep while she drank coffee. She exchanged looks with them. April raised a eyebrow and Mona tilted her head.
“What?” Mona asked.
“Thin walls,” April said.
Mona walked into the kitchen and poured herself a cup of coffee. Leo gave a look that seemed to be somewhere between a sheepish grin and a tired scowl. Mona was about to take a sip of her coffee when Leo relieved her of the cup. She gave him a look and poured herself another cup of brew.
“I thought we were quiet,” Mona said, praying she wasn’t blushing.
“You were,” April said. “It stays here. I’m not going to tell anyone about it.”
Leo sipped his coffee with a thoughtful look.
“Quite honestly… I was surprised,” April said.
“Why?” Mona asked.
“Just not expected,” April said with a shrug.
“People can surprise you,” Leo said.
Mona wondered how she and Leo should go about things now. There was no intention at any time yesterday for what ended up transpiring in the rather late hour of the night.
“We still have morning practice to do,” Mona said, breaking her own thoughts.
Leo glanced at the wall clock, “We have about two hours before the others will start to wake up. We should be finished by that time.”
Mona headed out towards the fire escape and April bid them a good practice before they disappeared up the fire escape. One on the roof Mona began to stretch to get ready. Leo stood across from her and began his own stretching routine. Once warmed up they went through the normal morning kata in silence. At least the first few minutes in silence.
“It stands to question,” He said, breaking the silence. “Where does this put us?”
She brushed her nose with a finger, “I don’t know. We’re friends, I still feel that way. It.. doesn’t really change anything… Does it?”
He tilted his head, “Depends on your point of view.”
“I… admit it was early. I do like you, I just.. didn’t think I’d jump all the steps and dive right in,” She said.
He came to a stop in the kata and looked over at her.
“It was both of us, Mona,” he said. “We have to find out for ourselves if we intend to dwell on what happened or keep going.”
“We keep on going,” Mona said.
“Hey did we miss the party?” A voice asked.
They turned to see Mikey leading the rest of the brothers onto the roof.
“Nope,” Mona said. “The party’s just starting.”
Mona ended up just watching them practice. Seeing them using different weapons than usual was nice treat for her. After practice they chose to relax and hang on the roof, it was a nice cool morning and it seemed like a great place.
“You really thinking about going to Hawaii Mikey?” Don asked.
Mikey chuckled, “Yeah I mean why not? Video game championships are there this year and I want to brush up on my surfing.”
“You surfing? You haven’t done that since we were like.. What twelve?” Raph asked.
“Hey I wasn’t half bad. And it’s just like skateboarding…,” Mikey trailed off.
“Just with sharks and the possibility of drowning,” Mona finished.
“What about you Don?” Raph asked.
“Well… Mona did offer shacking some of us up if we so desired,” Don said. “I rather like that idea.”
“I’m considering Australia,” Raph said.
Don looked at Leo like ‘well?’.
“Seems Mona will have two room mates then,” Leo said, with a smirk.
She tilted her head at both Don and Leo. She chuckled.
“Hmm the geek and the neat freak, my life is set,” she joked.
Raph snorted, “How long we talkin’ here?”
“Until she’s sick of us,” Don chuckled.
“Heh, sides, Splinter’s choosing to take care of the farm house. He wants his space.” Mikey chimed.
Raph gave a annoyed kind of noise. Mona got up and headed towards the fire escape. Leo and Don seemed to be the only two who glanced over to watch her leave.
