Specter Hunters 3
(WE NOW RETURN YOU…TO SPECTER HUNTERS.)
“Danny, what did you just say?”
Sam looks over at him with confusion, in disbelief of the name that was spoken.
“OK, I think you’ve taken one too many blows to the head, Danny.” Tucker tells him.
“Oh no, he’s telling the truth.” Yancy tells them, slowly beginning his own transformation. Before their very eyes, Yancy’s hair turns from red, to neon green. The freckles on his face become more defined, and his skin turns a tea green. Danny was right; the spectral threat Youngblood stands right in front of them.
“Aw, DUDE! This is groundbreaking!” Don says, holding up a photo of a ‘younger’ Youngblood to the camera. “I didn’t even know Ghosts could age!”
“They can’t!” Danny tells him. “It’s impossible…at least I thought it was. So how did you do it?”
A devious grin crosses Youngblood’s face as he explains. “Actually, it was kind of a shock for me, too. I know you remember Ecto-Day.” Danny nods his head as Youngblood refers to when Danny & the ghosts from the Ghost Zone saved earth from a gigantic Ecto-roid. “Do you remember the aftermath?”
Danny’s eyes widen even more after hearing that question, as he nods his head. “Yeah, I remember…the storm.”
“That asteroid shower that rained down fragments of the Ecto-roid.” Tucker elaborates.
“Tons of ghosts were hit with the debris.” Sam adds. “Vortex, Walker, Bertrand…”
“…And Desiree.”
Sam gasps upon hearing Youngblood reveal that name. “She was hit while trying to escape back into the Ghost Zone.” He continues. “When I saw her, she begged for my help. And being the kid that I was, I wanted to do the right thing. I took her back to the Ghost Zone on my Pirate Ship, and it healed her. That’s when she offered to grant me any wish that I wanted, no matter how much power she needed to use.”
“And you wished yourself as a teenager?” Danny asks. “But…why?”
It’s at that moment that Youngblood’s eyes narrow, and he develops an icy stare. “You have no idea what it’s like being an 8-year old alone in the Ghost Zone.” He says coldly. “No one to talk to, no one to be with…just older ghosts who want nothing to do with you, at all. I’ve seen the way you live, Danny. You got friends, popularity; there’s not a moment where you’ve felt you were by yourself. I wanted that…and now I have it. And I’m not letting you take that!”
Sensing an inevitable battle, Danny preps himself by charging his fist with ecto-energy. “Dude, you made my family’s ghost portal malfunction, you kidnapped my house, and you made my girlfriend kiss other women! And you’re gonna pay for the first two!”
Sam nods her head in agreement, before realizing what her boyfriend said exactly. “What? HEY!!!”
Before she can comment, Danny raises his left arm and unleashes an ecto beam right at Youngblood, who counters with one of his own…from his right index finger. The two become engaged in a beam struggle, one that Danny calls off quickly by disabling his attack.
“If that’s your way of making me pay Phantom, you need to start running…” Youngblood jokes sinisterly.
Danny grows in response, and decides to unleash both barrels as he fires dual hand ecto-beams. Youngblood yawns at the powerful display, and answers with a one-handed ecto-beam of his own. They lock in a beam struggle again, but this one Youngblood takes advantage of. He uses his power to weaken Danny’s beam, to the point where his beam overpowers it, and he blasts Danny across the hall, sending him crashing into a row of lockers.
“DANNY!!!”
Sam & Tucker rush down the hall towards him as he picks himself up from the metal wreckage his crash created. “Man, you weren’t kidding Tucker.” He utters. “He’s off the charts.”
“I know.” Tucker agrees, still scanning the meter. “I think with the increased age Desiree granted him, she also increased his power.”
“Yeah, well let’s see how he does when it’s hand to hand!” Danny states, charging forward for a physical confrontation. Before he can throw one punch though…
“Ah-ah-ah, Danny.”
…Youngblood morphs himself back into his human form, making Danny stop in his tracks. “How would your classmates feel if they saw you violently beating me down?”
Subtly tilting his head, Youngblood refers to the gang of students at the other end of the hallway, who have just gathered there. All of them watch the two intently, whispering amongst themselves why would Danny Phantom…or Danny Fenton for that matter, attack one of their own. Not wanted to risk having a completely tarnished reputation, Danny stands down, and transforms into his human form.
Sam becomes concerned with this development. “Danny, what are you…?”
“He’s right, Sam.” He tells her. “And I’m not gonna fall into his trap.” He then turns back to Youngblood. “But this isn’t over between us. You’re going back…”
Youngblood can only smirk at the Ghost Boy’s threat. “Gee, then I guess I’ll just have to continue making your life a living hell.” Turning away from his foe, he makes his way down a crossing hallway, but not before glaring at the entrance with glowing green eyes. A moment later, the massive Mastodon Skeleton Danny & Valerie were fighting outside appears at the entrance…and then transforms into a parrot skeleton, Youngblood’s assistant. It then flies & flutters down the hall past Team Phantom, effectively staying hidden from the students at the other end of the hall, and onto the shoulder of Youngblood. The two then make their exit, just as Valerie enters the scene, wearing her street clothes.
“The giant elephant ghost just disappeared.” She tells them. “I think it might’ve morphed and…”
“It went with Youngblood.” Danny informs her, cutting her off.
Valerie raises a curious eyebrow. “Youngblood? That little pipsqueak pirate kid?”
“He’s not a pipsqueak anymore…” Sam utters, walking over to Danny.
This only confuses Valerie more. “Huh? What’re you talking about?”
“Let’s just say that puberty hit him hard.” Tucker tells her, as the group opts for a change of scenery from the school.
KSSSSSHHHHHHHHHKK!!!
SCENE 12
“Dude, are you sure this is the right place?”
Don & Henry find themselves in the parking lot of Nasty Burger, best known as Amity Park’s teen hangout & eatery. “Hey, here is where Sam told me to meet over the phone.” Don says, as they approach the double-door entrance. “Besides, I could use a double cheeseburger right now.” As they open the doors though, they receive something very different.
“YOU! Hands behind your head! On the floor!”
In an instant, several large men wearing white suits tackle the duo to the floor, forcing their hands behind their back as they pin them down.
“Dude, TELL me you didn’t shoplift from the electronics store again!” Don barks at his partner. Fortunately for them, thankful interference saves them from prosecution.
“No! Wait! They’re cool, they’re with me!”
Looking up, Henry & Don spot Tucker rushing over, just as the men release their hold and help them back to their feet. “Sorry about that, guys. They’re former ‘Guys in White’.” Tucker explains. “They’re part of my secret service now…though they still need to learn how to do things in this line of work.”
As they brush themselves off, Tucker waves them over and walks them to the booth he, Danny & Sam occupy. “OK, what’s going on?” Don asks. “I thought this was gonna be another night of wild ghost battles and supernatural action.”
“Thank god it isn’t.” Henry murmurs.
“This was my idea.” Sam tells them. “I brought you here to show you that our life isn’t all catching ghosts and epic battles. We do normal teen stuff too, like just hanging out here. Even though this place is a haven for mindless carnivores.”
“You say that like it’s a bad thing.” Tucker tells her, before taking a huge bite out of his double-cheeseburger.
Sam just rolls her eyes and continues. “Anyway, we all do have normal points in out lives, right Danny…Danny?”
She looks over at him, and spots his head in his hands. He’s deep in thought. “Wha, huh? Oh, sorry. Yeah.”
“You’re still thinking about Youngblood, aren’t you?” Tucker asks, before taking another bite of his burger.
“I can’t help it.” Danny answers, confirming Tucker’s guess. “I mean, he’s out there right now. Who knows how much damage he’s doing and…”
“Danny, you’re starting to freak out.” Sam tells him. “You’re worrying too much about him. Besides, he said he was after you and…”
“And you believed him?” Danny asks, shocked. “Sam, you don’t know the kid like I know him…hell, he’s not even a kid anymore he’s…”
“I know, a teen like you & me.” Sam interrupts. “And I’ve been thinking about that. Maybe we should just let him keep this life. He’s not really hurting anyone and…”
“Yeah, not yet.” Danny says, cutting her off. “I know he has something planned though, Sam. And I have to find him before it’s too late.”
“Uh, actually…” Tucker chimes in, pointing at the entrance. “…it won’t be too hard to find him.”
Both Danny & Sam turn toward the entrance, and spot what Tucker is pointing at. There he is, Youngblood, in his human form living it up with Dash, Kwan, and several other members of the Casper High Varsity Team. As they make their way to a booth across the room, Danny rises up immediately to confront him. But he’s then stopped by Sam.
“Danny…”
He lets out a low sigh, before smiling reassuringly at her. “Don’t worry, I’m not going over there to pick a fight. I’m just getting a free refill.”
Believing him, she lets go of his arm, allowing him to go on. “Oh, and could you bring back a 44oz vanilla shake?”
Danny looks back at her and just grins. “Geez, she may be a vegetarian, but she attacks sugar worse than Tucker on Halloween.”
Suddenly, Danny finds himself bumping into someone as he reaches the main counter. “Oop, sorry about…that…” Unfortunately, that someone is Yancy Blount a.k.a. Youngblood. Clenching his fists, Danny’s immediate response is to disable his ‘foe’ right then & there. But he resists the urge and turns to the counter, waiting for a cashier. Youngblood does the same.
“So, you’re following me now?” Youngblood asks, his voice an utter. “Keeping tabs on me until some kind of sneak attack?”
“What? I was here first.” Danny utters back. “You’re the one who came in here! And I’m not gonna let you hurt any innocent people…even if they are Dash & Kwan.”
“You just want me back in the Ghost Zone.” Youngblood responds, anger growing in his voice. “Little Danny Phantom, keeping the ghosts in line. You wanna take this away from me…and I won’t let you.”
“You’re going to hurt people…and I won’t let you!”
And suddenly, the two find themselves face to face, seething in anger. Both of them are ready to drop the gauntlet and engage in an epic battle right then & there, despite who’s around to see.
“May I help you?”
Their attention is diverted though, as the cashier now stands in front of her register, ready to take their orders. Deciding to delay their face off, the two turn to the cashier, smiling innocently & nervously.
“Uh…yeah! I’ll just take two free refills, both vanilla shakes.” Danny says.
“And I’ll just have an order of cheese fries.” Youngblood orders.
Within moments, the Nasty Burger worker comes up with their orders. Youngblood pays her for his order, and as she turns to process it on the register, he extends his index finger covertly and blasts Danny’s cups, knocking over both shakes as they splash onto him.
“Keep the change…” Youngblood tells the cashier, before flashing a devious grin at Danny and walking off. Not content with him having the last laugh, Danny fires off a covert ecto-blast of his own, nailing the target…Youngblood’s backside.
“YEEOUCH!!!”
The shock & pain causes him to toss his order into the air, where it eventually comes down onto his head. Dash, Kwan, and the rest of the Varsity squad spot Youngblood’s predicament, and burst into hysterical laughter. Danny makes his way back to his friends as Henry stays behind with the camera, just having made his own order. Unfortunately, he captures Youngblood’s contempt for this development on camera…and his plan for revenge.
“So Danny wants to play it that way…fine.” He says, reaching in his pocket and pulling out what looks to be a skeleton keychain. “Hey, I’m gonna need a distraction.”
Henry becomes nervous as he watches Youngblood talk to the keychain. But he begins to freak out when the keychain talks back. “Do I really have to?” It sighs.
“Yes, you do.” Youngblood answers. “I’m not letting Danny have any advantage over me. He’s not sending me back!”
“Youngblood, have you ever considered…talking to the Ghost Boy?” The Keychain asks. “Perhaps you and him can come to some sort of…”
“Less talking, more distracting.” Youngblood tells him coldly.
The Keychain sighs again. “…oh, very well…”
And with that, it vanishes from Youngblood’s hand, and completely from sight. Panicking, Henry decides to leave his order as he rushes back to Danny’s booth, to find all of them ready to leave.
“Uh guys? I think there’s gonna be a really big problem coming…” He tells them.
“Freaking out, much?” Sam asks sarcastically.
“Dude, chill. You’re just a little on edge from hanging around Danny when he’s fighting ghosts.” Tucker explains. “Happened to me when he first…”
“NO!” Henry interrupts. “I mean, that guy over there. Young…something! He said something about a distraction. And he was talking to his keychain, and…”
“I apologize for my partner’s behavior.” Don chimes in. “He gets paranoid when filming big ghost episodes.”
Danny nods his head, understanding. “Henry, you can relax.” He says. “I’ll be the first one who knows a ghost attack is coming. Because when it does, I can see…my…breath…”
And he can, as clear as day. The room might as will be the arctic for Danny, as he senses a gigantic ghost presence approaching. “Oh, crap! EVERYONE GET OUT OF HERE, NOW!!!”
Too late.
The front of Nasty Burger is suddenly ripped from its foundation as a horrifying skeleton behemoth roars menacingly, looking ready to devour everyone inside. Henry drops to the ground, saying his Hail Mary prayer as he struggles mightily to steady his camera. But even though his shot is shaky, the sound comes in crystal clear.
“DANNY!!!”
“GOING GHOST!!!”
In a flash of light, Danny morphs into his hero form to do combat with the ghost threat and…
KSSSSSSSHHHHHHHKKK!!!
…Darkness.
SCENE 13
Henry turns the camera back on, just in time to catch the scene from the Nasty Burger parking lot. The restaurant is now a raging inferno, and the skeleton monster is nowhere to be found. However, action still remains on the scene.
Danny & Youngblood are inside the burning building, going blow for blow as they have been for the last 5 minutes. The Varsity players have already fled the scene, with Dash & Kwan leading the way, but Sam, Tucker and the others remain to see the results of this epic battle. Each punch thrown rattles the restaurant, and brings it closer to collapse. The look in both young men’s eyes is that of pure rage. They both want to end this battle right here, but with every blow one takes, the other comes back stronger.
Finally, Youngblood’s able to down Danny with a knee to the gut. Danny doubles over in pain, and holds his gut as Youngblood goes in for the kill.
“Say goodnight, loser.”
“Goodnight…loser!”
Out of nowhere, Danny summons up all of his strength and delivers a haymaker to Youngblood’s jaw, powerful enough to propel him from Nasty Burger. Danny flies right after him, leaving the restaurant in the nick of time as a second later, the blazing burger joint comes crashing down. Sam breathes a sigh of relief for Danny’s safety, but quickly gasps once she sees Youngblood back on his feet again, ready to continue this fight. He clenches his fists, grits his teeth and prepares to deliver another beating…when the sounds of sirens quickly fill the air. Looking down the street, Youngblood & Danny spot several fire trucks on their way, all being lead by the Fenton RV, driven by Maddie as Jack sits in the passenger side, aiming the Fenton Bazooka.
Youngblood knows he’s outnumbered, and decides that discretion is the better part of valor. “This isn’t over, Phantom…” He utters coldly, before fading from sight. Using his invisibility, he makes his clean escape, as Danny drops to his knees.
“I kinda wish it was…” He utters back, as Sam & Tucker join him. “I…I never faced someone that powerful before, and with powers almost exactly like mine…I don’t think I can beat him.”
Hearing his self-doubt, Sam decides to shake him out of it by holding him close and looking him in the eye. “Danny, listen to me…” She starts. “…You are the greatest hero this city has ever known. You’ve saved us countless times, and you’ve saved the world. With your powers, there is nothing you can’t do. But Danny…JUST TALK TO HIM!!! Every time you two fight, property damage rises!”
“She’s got a point there.” Tucker chimes in. “It’s bad enough I gotta raise taxes.”
“Sam, I can’t talk to him!” Danny responds. “I know he won’t listen, and…”
“Actually…I think Sam’s right.” All eyes turn to Henry, as he steadies his camera & explains. “Y’see, before the big…ghost fight thing, Young-dude was talking to his keychain. But…his keychain was talking back. And it was saying how he should talk to Danny, a lot like Sam’s telling you that you should talk to him.”
He finishes his statement to a combination of strange stares and silence that lasts for several moments. “O…K. The talking keychain again…” Sam repeats in disbelief.
Tucker starts becoming a believer, though. “Wait, it’s starting to make sense. Dude, was the keychain like a skeleton or something?” Henry nods his head, just as Danny begins to understand.
“You’re right, his skeleton helper!” He concludes. “But, why would he want Youngblood to talk to me?”
“It doesn’t matter now.” Sam says. “We just have to find a way to get to Youngblood.”
At that moment, the Nasty Burger worker approaches the group, her clothes tattered & smoke damaged. “What am I gonna do? My boss will kill me when he sees this.”
“Don’t worry about it. Here, take this card.” Tucker tells her, handing over a gold credit card. “Just charge it to the mayor; the city will handle the clean-up.”
“Hey, thanks.” She replies, before reading the card. “Hey, wait a minute. This card says it belongs to Mr. Vl—!”
“Trust me, it’ll work.” Tucker assures her.
The young worker shrugs and runs off with the card as Tucker walks back over to his friends. They all take a moment to stare at the inferno, which firefighters are currently trying to quell.
“Well, this has been one helluva week, hasn’t it?”
“H-uh, you can say that again.” Sam agrees, starting to vent. “We’ve been attacked by legions of ghosts, sent on a wild goose chase for Danny’s house, and we found out a former 8-year old ‘minor’ threat has grown up to become a major threat! Not to mention I haven’t been alone with Danny…”
“Wait…that’s it! THAT’S IT!!!” Grinning widely, Danny pulls Sam close and gives her a huge kiss on the lips, before pulling back. “Sam, you’re a genius!”
Sam grins in agreement with that. “Well, that’s a given.”
“I should’ve known!” He continues. “She’s the perfect choice to stop all of this. I’ll be back…I have to make a visit to an old friend.”
Floating into the air, Danny makes his exit as he soars off into the night sky, to a destination only he knows. “Where’s he going?” Sam asks.
“He said something about ‘She’s the key’. I think he’s going to get Desiree.” Tucker concludes. “So she can take back the wish and make everything normal again.”
Unfortunately, they can’t question Danny of his true motives, as he’s over several stories in the air, and three blocks away. All they can do is wait…and see what develops.
