[THIS IS THE LONGEST CHAPTER YET!! :D]
Copyright stuff- Jackie Chan Adventures and all the characters are copyright of Sony Pictures. Well, except for Khaki, Devi, Lor, and some of the random people.
Notes- Mind you, I'm doing this from memory. I haven't seen the show in a long time. Once I get a hold of the episodes, I can go back and fix what I have messed up on, so for now, I am sorry if I mess up at some of the characters' reactions or quirks. ^^;;
---------------
At Uncle's Rare Finds, there was a sense of tension. Uncle's aura itself was comparable to that of the Grim Reaper. Tohru, however, was relieved of his mother's safety, and was busy making tea for her arrival. "Sensei... Are you all right?" He paused and glanced at Uncle, who was stiffly sitting in an armchair and glaring at space.
"Uncle is... fine. Make extra tea for Uncle."
"Yes, sir."
"And... where is Jade?"
"She just left for school."
"And Jackie?"
"He and Captain Black are cleaning up some of the rooms."
"Captain Black? He is here?"
"He... offered to help out in the house while my mother is here."
"Aiyah... Uncle needs all the help he can get..." Uncle muttered.
"Huh?"
"Nothing..."
---------------
Valmont smacked his head against his desk in defeat, groaning. "I can't believe... That I'm stooping to this level..." He lifted up his head and stared angrily at a memo pad placed squarely in the middle of his desk. On it was listed a time and a place: Two o'clock. Moose World.
--------------
The ringing of the phone resonated all throughout the Dark Hand condo. Chow darted to the phone and picked it up. "Yeah, Boss?"
"Tell Hak Foo and Devin that I want them to report to the Fish Cannery."
"Yessir!"
"That is all." A dial tone was heard.
Chow sauntered down the hallway and called through the door. "Boss wants ya at the office! You guys better go immediately!" He sighed and plopped himself on the couch in the living room, propping his arm on the back. He really questioned what had been going on in that room, especially when he heard Devin yelling. The others had heard too, and they couldn't figure out what Hak's 'personal belongings' were. Their only guess was that she touched some of his weapons without permission.
Hak Foo exited the room, followed by Devin after about ten seconds. Devin was staring intently and sternly at the ground. Hak gave Chow a look. "We are going now."
---------------
"Here's the deal. I found a small bit of work, but... in the most humiliating of places. We've got a money and drug laundering job, but you two have to go to Moose World."
Devin cocked an eyebrow. "Go to Moose World? With him? Doesn't that mean-"
"You two will have to dress and act like a couple. We can't risk a mess-up, and we can't risk suspicion. You two have been training together, haven't you?"
Devin had just opened her mouth to speak, but snapped it shut again. Now was no time to mess up a chance at a job, especially her first gig. "Yeah. But is the couple thing necessary? Can't I just be a tour guide to him or-"
"A couple would seem a lot less suspicious."
A vein was clearly pulsing on Hak Foo's forehead all throughout the conversation. He eyed Valmont with contempt, as he never expected that he'd have to do this, and Devin, for arguing with Valmont. "I am not happy."
Valmont seethed. "None of us are happy right now. But if you mess up this little gig..." He eyed Hak Foo's muscles... and a sweat drop went down his forehead, "I'll have to wring someone's neck..."
Devin's hand trailed up to her neck subconsciously... "Not mine..."
Valmont sighed. "Now, Hak Foo... You will need to dress more naturally."
---------------
Hak Foo and Devin stepped out of a Volkswagon and made their way for the admission line. Hak Foo was wearing a pair of jeans, a KISS t-shirt, a pair of boots, and a wristwatch, which read 10:30. There was going to be a lot of time before the mission took place. Devin was also wearing a pair of jeans, a Wonder Woman t-shirt, sneakers, and a baseball cap.
Hak mumbled something under his breath as they made their way to the line. Before he got very far, she hissed at him, "Listen, I'm not happy about this either. Let's just get this fucking deal over with and go home."
Hak was just about to use force on her, but he held back, and growled, "Don't use that tone with me. You will regret it." He looked at the very long line ahead of them and groaned.
Devin looked to the side. "Listen. I'm sorry I looked at the pictures. I'm not going to tell anybody or anything. I know there's not much I can do to admit that I truthfully am sorry, but we have to get over it. We're supposed to be acting like a couple right now."
Awkwardly, Hak Foo grabbed Devin by the shoulder and pulled her next to him. "I forgot," he muttered.
Devin's cheeks flushed. It felt... different to be close to a guy. She went out with only one or two guys during high school, and most of it was very casual. After a few seconds of staring off into space, she snapped back into reality and remembered that this was a mission and that the guy holding her shoulder was a jerk. She sighed, knowing that she was going to have to tough it out, so she went ahead and put a smile on her face, leaning her head on his shoulder. She glanced up at him. "It'd help if you'd smile."
Hak paused for a second, causing Devi to tense up. She was worried about what his reaction would be. As of right now, his face was expressionless. His lips then curled upwards, revealing a rather charming smile. "Only for now," he said out of the side of his mouth to her.
Devi was surprised by how nice his smile looked, although it was very different from his toothy childhood grin. It was hard to believe that it was coming from a person who acted so cold-blooded. The more that she thought about it, she wasn't absolutely mad at him, although the way he had been treating her and the things he said when she apologized was what she had been irritated about. But she guessed it was understandable, since he didn't want anyone to see the pictures. She was also very grateful for how much he had taught her so far. "So I guess this means no training for a while still, huh...?"
Hak turned his head to see hers, and he answered her in his choppy English. "...I'll think about it. I don't trust you, but you will not be useless."
"Well, I wasn't expecting you to trust me after I was stupid. And I refuse to be 'useless'."
"That is what I expect to hear from you."
Devin glanced around. "Perhaps we should play our parts for a while. We don't want anyone overhearing us in the line."
"Fine."
She stood up straight and glanced up and down at his outfit. "Did you choose out that outfit yourself?" she asked, smirking widely. She was trying to suppress some laughter, and was successful. The only reason she thought it was funny was because she was not used to seeing him in anything other than the blue outfit he always wore.
"Yes."
"Good job," she smiled.
Hak Foo's face flustered slightly, as this was a weird thing to be complimented about.
-------------------------------
Jackie, Captain Black, Tohru were waiting near the front of the store, and Uncle had been spending the whole time sitting in the armchair with an ominous look on his face, when finally, the door bell gave a little 'ding', and in walked a short, stout lady with wiry black hair and beady eyes.
"Mommy!" Tohru shouted, and came over to greet her.
"My little pumpkin!" Mama Tohru made him bring his face down so she could hug him. She then paused and looked towards Uncle sitting morosely in the armchair. "GET UP, BILLY GOAT! That is no way to greet me!"
Uncle didn't even flinch as she shouted at him. He stood up and stalked over to her, looking down at her. Through clenched teeth, he said "Welcome, Old Bat," and then stalked out of the room. From Uncle's room could be heard a scream of annoyance and anger. "AIYAAAAAAAAAAAH!" Everyone except for Mama Tohru flinched.
-----------------------------
Hak Foo stood next to Devin as she vomited into a garbage can.
Between wretches, she hacked at him, "I told you - I don't - like roller - coasters!"
Hak hesitantly gave her a pat on the back, causing her to get slightly more sick. After another minute, she was finished, and he helped her up, since she seemed to be slightly wobbly. He walked over to a food booth and bought a bottle of water for her. "I refuse to go on kiddy rides," he stated, handing her the bottle.
Devin just sighed. She understood his pride and she didn't much feel like arguing. She took a small sip of the water. She would chug it at any other time, but she had just vomited and didn't want to risk getting sick again. She went and sat down at a table, resting her head. "Hak, I'm going to rest my stomach a few minutes, then we can keep looking around..."
Hak looked over at her. She was frail, in his eyes, but trying so hard. He went and sat down next to her. It felt very awkward to him to act like a couple along with Devi. He had never thought about relationships, and had devoted most of his life to training and to keeping alive and earning money. He had never really had the time for women, and to him, except for his mother, they were weak, nosy, and usually had sharper tongues than necessary. Well... At least Devin was... She was the only woman he had been around for a while. Yet again, hesitantly, he rubbed her back while she rested. This felt so weird. Was it really necessary?
Devin was shocked that Hak Foo would try and stay in character this much. She figured that he would act like a rude boyfriend or something like that, but he was actually coming off very successfully as a fiance or something of the like. She actually started relaxing and drifting off as he rubbed her back. After a minute or two, she swiftly sat up straight. "Time check!" She was realizing how awkward things felt, so she had to find a distraction.
Hak Foo looked at his watch and read out the time. "Twelve... We have two hours. Let's make our way closer to the location." Hak got up.
"Yeah..."
-----------------------
"Uncle... Please..." Captain Black stood next to Jackie as he tried to coax Uncle out of his room.
"Uncle will come out later."
"But it is time for lunch. Have some tea, Uncle..."
"Uncle will wait until Old Bat is out or something."
Captain Black patted Jackie on the shoulder. "Not much we can do for now. You know how Uncle is... He'll come out when he's hungry."
Jackie sighed. "I suppose you're right."
They made their way to the table and sat down across from Tohru and his mother.
Tohru awkwardly picked up his chopsticks and began eating, and the others followed soon after.
For minutes, no one said anything. Captain Black didn't really know Mama Tohru very well, Jackie was scared of her, and Tohru didn't want to say anything she might scold him for.
Finally, Mama Tohru opened her mouth and spoke. "Where is Junk Monger?"
Captain Black started up, "He is really pi-"
Jackie immediately tapped his foot with his and took over the sentence, "Poor in health right now. He's been very tired lately. He is taking a nap. Right, Augustus?"
He blinked. "Yes, he just went to his room, so he'll probably be sleeping for a while."
Mama Tohru squinted at them and sighed. "Billy Goat is probably sick from being lazy. ...Why is the bald man here?"
Jackie smiled nervously. "He is here to help with the house while you are here. We want to... make sure you are comfortable."
She gave Black an investigative look. "Fine. What time will the girl be here?"
"In an hour or two. She is still at school right now," Jackie replied.
-----------------------
"We should go on one more ride. There's still plenty of time. How about..." Devi looked around. "That one?" She pointed to a very tall ferris wheel. 'It doesn't go fast, at least... Kinda high, though.'
"What does it do?"
"Um... Well..." 'Oh shit... It's not a "macho ride"... He's never gonna get in there... Unless I confuse him! Perfect!' "It... it is a big metal pinwheel that spins on an axis, and it's supported by metal beams. And those little cables hold up the little compartments that people sit in, and then the pinwheel rotates." She smiled.
Hak Foo stared at her for a second. "That translates to 'It doesn't go fast', huh?"
Devin's smile went away. "Hak," she paused and corrected herself. "Hak Foo, you got to choose the other ride! Do you want me to vomit again?" she complained.
Hak Foo grunted and grabbed her hand and started walking off, as he didn't want to ride such a slow-moving ride at the moment. He had gotten too much of an adrenaline rush from the roller coaster.
Devi dug her heels into the ground as he started trying to drag her off. "I'm. Not. Going. On. Another. Roller. Coaster!"
Hak gave a tug and she went flying.
'Shit! I'm going to fall!' She was almost immediately caught by him after the tug.
"You are being very persistent, so fine. But it is the only slow ride I will go on."
The line was slightly long, but as soon as the prior groups of people got out of the ferris wheel, all of the new people filled it up, including Hak and Devi.
Hak took a seat opposite to the door, and Devi sat to one side. She knew that they were supposed to be acting like a couple, but everything was weirding her out.
Hak was feeling the same way. He didn't ask to be paired with a annoying girl who had a nosy attitude and a weak stomach.
The ferris wheel started moving, after a sharp jerk.
"Hak Foo...?" Devin paused. Wouldn't it be easier just to call him 'Hak'? Then again, he'd slit her throat for being that 'casual' with him.
"Yes?"
"M-m-maybe this wasn't th-the best ride to choose... I-it's kinda shaky..."
Hak made a note to himself. 'Weak and cowardly, too.'
As the compartment made its way higher, Hak leaned back and relaxed, but a gust of wind shook it slightly.
Devin gave a shrill squeak. "EEP!"
'I'm never going on a ride with her again.'
The ferris wheel, although it wasn't even close to the top, was starting to be a bit less wobbly, so Devin stood up. "I guess this isn't s-so bad..." Surprisingly, another gust of wind hit the gondola, and she shrieked, falling at Hak's feet.
Hak looked down at her. "It would be wise to stay seated."
Devi shakily got up again, deciding she would sit down as soon as possible. She, even surprising herself, decided to sit down right next to Hak Foo, in his personal bubble, which was unusually big.
"What are you doing?" he asked in a state of shock. He didn't feel comfortable with her sitting that close when it wasn't necessary. He didn't mind the sitting next to her in public because he wasn't as close as she was right now, and also because it was 'necessary'.
"I'm... scared. This thing is fucking wobbly..." she muttered in a shaky voice. "It's not as bad as using a gun, b-but... this thing could break or something..."
Hak sighed. "Safety regu- reg-... Whatever."
Devi looked down intently at her knees. She didn't make eye contact with Hak. She already felt bad enough for sitting so close to him when he probably didn't want her to. She started thinking. She felt that all of this was her fault. Perhaps things wouldn't be so awkward if she hadn't been an idiot and looked through those pictures. Not only that, but... She was surprised that he was even trying to comfort her. Or at least, that's what she thought he was trying to do. Her eyes started watering and tears started dripping onto her jeans. 'I'm the nosy, stupid idiot! I'm the one who made all of this more awkward than it should have to be!'
Hak stiffened. He was now extremely uncomfortable. There was a girl sitting directly next to him, crying her heart out. He kept on thinking about his personal bubble, and how he was going to deal with a crying woman...
Devi finally spoke through her tears. "I'm sorry! This is all my fault!" she shouted.
Hak paused. "Your actions... did not affect the decision for us to go on this mission." He was actually trying to comfort her because he didn't want to have to deal with it.
"But it wouldn't have been so fucking awkward if I had just kept my hands to myself!"
He decided to wait until she was finished spouting, but little did he know, something in her reasoning snapped.
"That brings up another thing!" Her sad tears started turning into frustrated ones. "Why would you kill a woman over seeing pictures of you as a child!? It's not like I broadcast them on the internet! I didn't show anybody and I didn't plan to! You must have some sort of problem! Yes, I was being nosy! Yes, I was being stupid! But killing someone over a few damn pictures?! There's something wrong with that!" She seethed very deeply and continued. "You're nothing like you were in those pictures! Nothing makes you happy! I bet even that charming smile earlier was absolutely fake!" More tears were starting to pour out of her eyes, and she was becoming hysterical and angrier at him. She didn't even realize she slipped the word 'charming', because words were just pouring out of her mouth. "I worked my ass of when you trained me and you think I'm just going to be some useless root! And the worst thing of all! You think all women are the same! You know nothing about women! You know nothing about ME! You don't think you can trust anybody! Yes, I'm grateful that you trained me! But you have been such a JERK! I've been trying to be nice!"
Hak was caught between shock and rage. He was almost speechless from the outburst, but as he noticed that her hand was raising to strike his face, he grabbed her wrist and tossed her to the floor, standing up and looking down at her as she cried in a heap on the ground. "IT is YOU who know nothing about ME! I have little in this life that makes me happy! The pictures make me happy! They remind me of a past I can't have now! Besides the pictures, my happiness is DEAD! I can't trust anybody or else I can't live! Trust hurts people! And you, you are different from other women! Your mouth is too sharp! A woman should not use that type of tone! And if I did not train you, you WOULD be useless! You probably still are!" He stopped right there. Perhaps he went too far...
As they finally reached the top, there was a long silence as the sun shone in on them: a tall and heavy-breathing figure and a crying, heaped-up woman.
It seemed like an eternity before Hak Foo finally spoke or moved. "Devin Smith... I..." He shut his mouth. He was starting to argue with himself. He wasn't going to apologize for her yelling. BUT- He did toss her too the ground. He had let his rage take over. He could have just yelled, rather than acting on his instincts. "Devin Smith, a woman has never shown such fierceness towards me. None has dared to." He knelt down. "You have... guts." The pause was because he was not sure what analogy was usually used in that spot. "You... may be weak and frightened, but you have a sharp tongue and you're stubborn." He paused. "I don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing..." He hesitantly reached down to help her up, because it was the least he could do instead of apologizing.
Before his hand reached her arm, she shouted, "STOP!" which made him halt. "If you lay those fingers on me after tossing me to the ground, then I will scream bloody murder and we'll have to leave. This whole mission will be ruined because you decided to touch me. And it will be YOUR fault."
Hak turned around and hissed through his teeth, then turned back. "You would not dare."
"Oh, I would. Don't touch me and everything will be fine. Maybe if you apologize, then I might reconsider."
Hak squirmed. He refused to apologize to an idiot brat like her. "I have no reason. You were being stupid."
Devin glared. "You know what? Maybe I'll just scream right now..."
Hak glared back. "You do not mean that."
Devin opened her mouth, and as sound started coming out, he slapped his hand over it.
Hak gritted his teeth. "Gah! STUBBORN!" He clenched his eyes closed, and stumbled over his words. "I-I....I......... am... I am sorry."
Devin blinked. She knew she was putting him in a tough situation, but she never thought he would actually apologize. She was so confused right now... Earlier in the day, she had been thinking that he wasn't so bad, and went all the way from that to being pissed off at him, the more she thought about it. She didn't even know how she felt anymore. She was sure that he was confused about something too. She wouldn't have expected him to apologize. BUT- He did. She bit her lip. "Accepted. Let's wait for this thing to be over... There's still one more rotation." After all of the commotion, Devi had completely forgot about the shakiness of the gondola, and paid no attention to it. She sat down back at her original spot. "And... Thank you for trying to comfort me earlier." She paused. "All of this is so stressful, you know? It's my first shot, and if I screw it up, you'll think I'm useless. And after today, I'll have an official criminal record if I'm found out. After that, no going back to my family, and besides, I'm too old to go back home. It's pretty much if I do okay, everything will be fine, but if I screw up, I have nowhere to turn to..."
Hak had listened to the whole thing, after sitting down. Of course, he was relieved that she accepted the apology, because if she hadn't, he would have gotten even more impatient and angry with her. "If I did not comfort you, you would make things troublesome for the mission." And as for a reply to the other problem, he said, "Do not screw up then." He glanced over at her, giving her eye contact. "It is hard to screw up if I am there too..." He paused and thought for a moment. 'Although, I could be wrong. She could screw things up even worse...'
Devin actually smiled, but was rubbing her wrist after the toss he gave her. "You're right. I guess that's a bit comforting."
Hak stared off into space in the other direction. 'WOMEN! I DO NOT GET THEM! ...She was right....' He grunted to himself. In that aspect, she did make a fool out of him. 'One minute, she is stubborn, the next thing she is scared. After that, she is sad, then angry, then stubborn again, and then... HAPPY? GRAAAAAAAAAH!' The whole time, his face had a flat expression. He had a very good poker face. 'This woman is crazy! ...No girl has ever made a fool out of me... She either has a death wish, or is not very smart. But that took a lot from her.' After this whole thing was done and over with, he did not know how he was going to deal with her. He had a feeling it would be very awkward though. This woman may have been crazy, wimpy, and nosy, but she did have guts when it counted. He supposed had a tiny bit of respect for her now, for being that gutsy, but that wasn't going to change much. "One more ro- rota- gah... One more circle, you said?"
-------------------------
Hak and Devi finally made their way to the location of the deal.
There were two men in jackets with a little moose emblem over the left side of the chest. Next to them sat average-sized duffel bags. Here was the plan. These two men, although they worked at Moose World, had connections with the gangs in 'Frisco.
They were to walk up to the men and say a code, and then retrieve the bags and leave. The reason they were sent as a "couple" was so that it would be less suspicious.
Since Devi was the better English speaker, she began to walk forward, but Hak put out his arm in front of her and walked up to them. Devi quirked an eyebrow and frowned, but didn't stop him.
Hak made his way over to the men, with Devi close behind. He sighed, feeling very stupid for what he was about to say, but opened his mouth to speak. He said, "And the moose jumped over the moon..." in his choppy English.
One of the men, who was bald with a hoop in his ear replied, "Because the dish ran away with the spoon."
The other man picked up the duffel bags and handed them to Hak Foo and Devin.
Devin gave a thanking nod, and both her and Hak made their way to the exit.
----------------------------------
"Jackiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiie!" A shrill cry came from the throat of Jade Chan, who had just gotten to the entrance of Uncle's Rare Finds. She was wheezy and extremely out of breath.
Jackie exasperatedly ran, almost tripping on the way down the stairs, and stumbled over to the door. "What's wrong, Jade?!" He stopped, smacked his head, and sighed. This wasn't the first time she had scared the wits out of him like this, and it probably wasn't even going to be over anything life-threatening.
"Jackie-Jackie-Jackie-Jackie! I saw Hak Foo! And he was with this woman! And-and-and they had duffel bags! I think there was something in the bags!" She was still out of breath and was holding on to the side of the door for balance.
Jackie became more attentive. "Augustus!"
Captain Black shuffled down the stairs in a quick manner. "Yeah, Jackie?"
"Jade saw one of the Enforcers... Have you gotten any leads on any of their crimes lately?"
He thought for a second and shook his head, surprised at the fact. "Surprisingly, no. There hasn't been anything from them for a while. It's almost like they disbanded..."
Jackie gave Jade a look. "Jade... People do have lives besides their jobs. I will look into it, but he would be violent if he were committing a crime."
Jade still seemed rather worried, but her focus changed right after as she stared at Black. "What's Captain Black doing here?"
Jackie smiled. "He is going to help out around the house while Tohru's mother is here."
Jade blanched. She had forgotten about Mama Tohru.
CHAPTER END!
A/N - This was probably the longest one to work on since I let it sit for such a long time. Thanks very much to my beta reader, Rei no Ikishini, who helped me think up the 'code', since I was stuck. I am very looking forward to writing the next chapter, as things will progress even more. Black and Jackie will try and get some alone time, the success of Hak and Devi gets them sent on ANOTHER mission, which causes some changes, the Chan Clan [namely Uncle] tries to deal with Mama Tohru, and the Enforcers get some more screen time! [I'm not sure what about yet...] But please, I would love constructive criticism, but please, no flaming.
