The day before he was scheduled to leave, Dib awoke, looked at the ceiling, and felt his eyes slide out of focus. "...fuck," he whispered, rubbing them as hard as he could. They had been working perfectly for so long, he almost forgot about the fact that he had previously been myopic. Why were they suddenly doing this to him now?
He sat up and looked around. Meg was still asleep in her makeshift crib. Rubbing his eyes again, he cursed when they seemed to get worse instead of better. Trying to mess around with his body, use his newfound "mastery" of the Meekrob, had probably caused this. Something they had done when they revived him made his eyes work, and he had undone it.
If he could regrow his arm in a few years' time, he could do something so simple as fix his eyes. Getting to his feet, he searched the room until he found something that would suffice as a mirror. The back of a platter. Staring at his pupils, he tried to visualize the lenses... the tissue in the back of his eyes... All he had to do was shorten his retinas, right?
Were it not early morning... Were he not cocky... Had the world not been turned upside down so recently, maybe he would have had second thoughts. But he didn't, and somehow he was surprised at the result when he stuck his finger up towards his eye and tried to do a little self laser-corrective surgery.
"SON OF A BITCH!"
It burned. He grabbed his face, curling into a ball and screaming at the top of his lungs. After the pain faded, he tried to look up... But all he saw through his right eye was blackness, with a little afterimage of something his brain had probably saved there. "I'm BLIND I FUCKING BLINDED MYSELF!" Desperation overwhelmed him and he began to sob, thrashing wildly, knocking things over... Megami, naturally, awoke during this and began to scream in confusion.
Remembering his child, he leaned against the wall and tried to calm himself. His breath came in panicked gasps, chest heaving as the levity of what he had done sank in. WHY did they give him these powers?! He was obviously not responsible enough to wield them...
Suddenly two Meekrob, followed by Ninnehla, burst into the room.
"Sir Dib?! What's wrong?!"
"I'M AN IDIOT!" he bellowed at them, still holding his eye. "I blinded myself. BLINDED MYSELF."
Ninnehla took hold of his shoulders firmly, looking him down. “Relax, Dib! Explain what happened.”
And thusly he found himself on the operating table again, with Ninnehla and a team of five scientists looking at him in confusion. “Your eyes just don't work correctly? It doesn't make sense.”
“It happens sometimes if you read too much or use the computer too much when you're young... they say...” Dib felt stupid. He wished they'd quit talking and fix it. “I wore a... device over my eyes to fix the problem when I lived on Earth. But that device was broken shortly before I died.”
After a few tests and some discussion amongst themselves, they came to a consensus that they had no clue what they were supposed to do, as Dib couldn't quite explain how to replicate the device. With a little effort they were able to repair the cells in his right eye that had been burned up... However, there was still the issue of him not being able to see clearly. “We can't just make adjustments. We don't know if they'll be correct. This is something you yourself will have to do.” Ninnehla looked down at him forlornly, though he couldn't tell because she was just a mass of blue.
“...I tried that, remember? Blinded myself? Yeah.”
“It has something to do with how these planes in his eye refract light,” one scientist piped up, pointing at a digital image they had taken of his orb and stuck up on the computer screen.
Nodding, another said, “Then we can just create some method for him to adjust them himself, right? Some way that is safe, that won't cause him to go blind if he does it incorrectly.”
Dib blushed at the mention of his fucking up again. And then they got to work, poking and prodding and making him generally uncomfortable.
By the next evening they had installed four tiny metal rods in his face, piercing through the skin and bone with only the ends showing toward the outside. Two near the corners of each eye. They felt odd at first, but he got used to them, and in fact thought they were pretty cool-looking.
Ninnehla stood with him before a (real) mirror and touched one with her smallest finger. “Send a charge through it, command it to do something. Spin it around, tilt it upward, downward... See how it affects your vision.”
Doing so, Dib felt the back of his eyes somehow tighten. The sensation was odd at first, but he got the hang of the adjustments and was able to modify his vision quite well.
“They just channel your power in the right direction, allowing you to make more minute changes.” Nodding in satisfaction, Ninnehla said, “I'm sorry we had to mar your face... but it's a small sacrifice for your peace of mind, don't you think?”
“I do think. And being able to see is worth the price.” Smiling at her, he chanced to reach out and take her hand. “Thank you, Ninnehla. And them. Please thank them all for me.”
Extraneous physical contact wasn't common among the Meekrob, Dib knew... And it might have made her uncomfortable. She allowed him to touch her for a moment, smiling, but eventually she pulled her hand away. Dib couldn't help but feel disappointed. Megami was fun to cuddle, but he missed having real affection from another more on his wavelength.
“You're quite welcome, Dib... A small token for you. A trifle, even...” Brushing her soft golden hair back from her face, she took a step away from him. “Now, hopefully, you are all set to depart. Tomorrow we'll reapproach your schedule.”
Nodding, Dib leaned back against the wall and folded his arms. “...that's right. I should have left a few hours ago. Had I not done this...”
Ninnehla began to glow faintly, which was something Dib had rarely seen from her. He hadn't ever asked what it meant. “...don't worry about it, Dib. I'm actually... somewhat glad I could spend a little more time with you.” After regarding him for a few moments, she finally gave a little bow. “I have some things to attend to yet. If you'll excuse me...” She ducked out of the room.
“I think I creeped her out, Megami.” He bent over and picked up the baby, nuzzling her forehead. “Don't tell Zim I held her hand, okay? He would take it way too seriously.”
“Mmmumumm,” Megami answered. Well, he liked to pretend she answered, but she was just babbling.
Sitting down with her in his lap, looking over all of his preparations again, he hoped that he could accomplish something significant after he left. He missed his family and Zim terribly. Before he had most certainly taken them for granted... Sighing, he vowed never to do so again. Meg reached at things and he kissed her soft hair, smiling to himself. He had decided not to send a message announcing his arrival on Nirvana... he wanted to surprise them. Having a half-Irken baby may upset some people... but at least Valerie would probably find her to be cute.
Dib played with Meg for a few hours to pass the time, until she got cranky. Then he rocked her until she slept. Afterwards, he paced the room, planning, fantasizing about his reunions. When his door creaked open and Ninnehla poked her head inside, he jumped in surprise and gasped.
“Ooooh, I didn't mean to startle you,” Ninnehla cried breathily, stepping quickly inside and closing the door behind her.
Smiling, Dib replied, “I'm just wound too damn tight. You didn't do anything wrong.”
They stood across the room from one another, regarding each other strangely. Smiling warmly, Ninn finally spoke up. “...My shift has ended for the day. I'm going home.”
Dib tilted his head. Normally she didn't tell him when she was leaving... He wasn't even sure what her shifts were. She seemed ever-present when he needed her... She was probably on-call. “...have a good evening, Ninnehla,” he said, putting his hands on his hips.
She looked away, beginning to glow again. “I was thinking... You might have liked to see the outside of this facility before leaving... Meekrob's capital city...”
“I would!” Dib cried, his eyes widening. He hadn't bothered to ask recently, despite feeling fully capable of defending himself. Getting a view of the planet from close-up, instead of from space, would be nice.
“Wonderful!” Ninnehla clapped her hands together. “I've arranged to have a caretaker for Megami... So it can just be you and I...”
Almost like a date. Dib blushed, putting his hand behind his back. Ninnehla just wanted to show him around... it wasn't like that.
Meekrob was a fascinating planet... The creatures there did indeed use their powers for everything from work to play to aesthetic enhancement. Their buildings were not typical, tall structures one would expect from an advanced civilization... The landscape was rather bare, their dwellings small and inconspicuous. Greenery bloomed from every corner, overtaking streets in some cases.
“They're just now returning to normal after the Irkens tried to overtake them... The aggressors sent an Invader, but they were able to thwart her.” She held out her arms. “This is a reflection of their shunning of the physical,” Ninnehla explained to him. “They evolved past such limitations long ago... It's almost as if they're trumpeting it to the universe, isn't it? Their simplicity shows how much they've progressed beyond creature comforts, mortal weaknesses.”
“You often speak of them as if they're not your people,” Dib said, looking about at everyone as they passed. Both Dib and Ninnehla were apparently objects of fascination, being so much different from your average Meekrob.
She gestured to the others and smiled. “Sometimes I don't feel as if I am... And they feel the same. Though they treat me nicely enough. I can't complain, I've had a good life...”
“You feel like you're stuck here, don't you?”
Ninnehla thought about it for a moment, and then nodded. “I think I do... Often. It's silly, I know...”
“No, not at all... Because I've felt the same way. Amazing how similar we are.” He put his hands in his pockets. “When I lived on Earth, I hated it, I felt shunned. I was stuck there... And then... it was destroyed, and I could never go back...”
“Earth... was not destroyed.”
Looking at Ninn in surprise, he cried, “No?!”
“They rarely destroyed the planets they took. The Irkens... Instead, they molded them into toys, symbols of their conquest...” She balled her hands into fists. “They turned your home planet into an amusement park.”
Dib's eyes dropped to the ground, and he almost laughed at the absurdity of it. “Really, now...”
“Dib...”
“Hmm?”
Meaning shone deep in Ninnehla's eyes when she looked at him. “Don't ever waste this gift we've given you. Because the Irkens spat in your face, and squashed the immense potential I know you have... Make something of yourself, Dib. Make yourself known throughout the universe-- not just for killing the Irkens, but for something else much more meaningful... More soulful, more unique to yourself...”
“I won't waste it. I won't...” He fiddled with his tunic a little. “I hope you don't waste your potential either, Ninnehla.”
The rest of the evening was mostly passed in contemplation between the two of them.
********************************************************************
Promising Ninnehla he would keep in touch, Dib departed early the next day. He was given an escort, though the Meekrob was very small, timid and quiet. Dib wished Ninnehla wasn't so damn important; she could have come instead. But of course it wasn't fair for him to expect her to come halfway across the universe with him.
The facility had given them a small personal craft that only one with a Meekrob signature could pilot. Using his mental powers he was easily able to interface with it and make it take off, though he let the guide do most of the work. Quite exhilarating, either way.
Megami was strapped soundly in the passenger's seat, a little annoyed at the sensations she felt as they took off. But once space could be seen through the viewfinder, she quieted and stared at the stars, breathing loudly through her little mouth. Dib laughed at her. “Beautiful, isn't it? After you see it enough, it starts to get old, though...”
“Everything has... its own beauty, as well as its nastiness...” the guide remarked quietly, seemingly pained. Ninnehla's earlier comment about them disliking vocalization occurred to Dib... He would just have to speak mentally to him from now on.
After setting their course, the guide excused himself to his own quarters. Dib looked over everything and sighed. It was going to take a few months to get to Nirvana, even at full speed. He decided to delve into the newsnets he remembered Gaz being so fascinated with, catch up with everything he had missed. Calling up a music and light program to entertain Megami with, he began to read... Thankfully, during his time on Meekrob, he had been able to pick up enough of the Federation Language to make sense of most of the headlines. The more he read, the more he was able to understand it. It was a fairly simple language, which is probably why it had been adopted throughout the Planetary Federation. He grinned, remembering how smug Gaz had been about learning it. “S'not so hard, you egotist,” he murmured.
Six months is a long time to be hidden away. He guessed that he had been dead for a few months before that, though it was impossible to be sure. Neither the Federation nor Meekrob measured time as humans obviously did, so he had to approximate. After a little digging, he was able to find news about Nirvana, though there wasn't much. The humans, as he figured, tended to keep away from other species.
He shouldn't have been surprised when he saw his name pop up, but he was. Delving further, he started to find it again and again and again... Often with Zim's... The universe really did see them as saviors. Blushing, he tried to read all of the dripping praise written for them, but had trouble.
Then he found the video...
Seeing the pain on Zim's face, towards the end... Seeing the way things truly were from an outside perspective... Seeing himself DIE. Zim had taken his body, holding it closely, his posture slumped, as the Pak pulled him onto that ship...
Tears streamed down his face. He hoped he found Zim soon. Their love couldn't be left like this.
Megami was becoming restless, so Dib took a break and lifted her from her chair. He wiped his face as he spun her in his arms, dancing a little in the small cockpit. “Megami Megami Megami Moooo,” he cooed, smiling as she giggled and flailed her little arms. Covering her in kisses, he cheered up a bit. Their love had survived... It was right here in his arms, wasn't it? No matter what had happened in the past or the present, they still had this little bit of future.
Over the time they spent traveling, Megami learned to sit up on her own. Soon, she was crawling. It was then that Dib learned about childproofing, and the true depths of Meekrob patience. He would be dozing at the captain's chair and hear a loud crash or thump and turn to find Megami playing with a broken piece of equipment, the little guide rushing out to gesture wildly at her. Thankfully, Dib smartened up before she hurt herself or destroyed the ship. The guide spent more time in his room, hiding from them. It was when Dib was in the midst of guiltily plugging and tying and tightening that the computer sent him an alert.
“Fuel reserves low... Refill of reservoir is suggested.” He scratched his head, going to fetch the guide. Megami burbled and pulled herself up to stand on the captain's chair. After scrutinizing, the guide said, “We'll have to make a stop...” He searched and cursed a little. “The only station around is outside Federation rule... The one we planned to stop at was shut down.”
From what Dib had read, Nirvana was indeed on the outskirts of the universe just like Earth had been. Having to go so long without a rest stop was probably unnerving for the little Meekrob. He tried to be understanding and mentally spoke with him. “So we'll have to be on our toes, hmm? Might be some unseemly types there?”
“It would probably be advisable that you stay onboard the ship with your young while I purchase the supplies.”
Dib felt a little put off, as he had been excited to see a new destination. However, the Meekrob made sense... No telling what would be waiting for him and his baby out there. Distracting Megami as they landed, he tried to resist running outside for a peek as the guide prepared to disembark. All he could see from the viewfinder was a dark, inky purple sky and a small, rundown building surrounded by ships.
The guide appeared quite nervous, but he bucked up. “I shall return soon, Sir Dib. Please remain here and keep yourself safe.” With that, he left, closing the door soundly behind him.
After an hour, Megami fell fast asleep.
After two hours, Dib started to get a little nervous.

AN!! Hey, I'mma try to do review replies, because I just love you guys that much. HERE WE GO.
Uppertorso: I win because I have awesome people like you supporting me and harrassing me to write XD;;
Noise Pollution: Haha, yeah, Dib's an alien badass now. Only not >_>;; But I loved the episode where he got Meekrob powers so of course I had to plot device the hell out of it. Mmm, devicey. I don't know much about the Zoras but from what I DO know you're on the right track. I'll have a better profile pic of her up on my site eventually. She's basically a Crystalline alien, only more flowy. If that makes sense.
This is basically a flashback, yes. But there will be juicy present-times things as well, I think.
Persephone: Thanks! I hope I don't disappoint! :3
Krimzon: I think I already replied to you on DeviantART XD;; ...I think. I LURVE YOU EITHER WAY.
Foxdragon: ....Karis will not be in this fic. XD;; I'll be honest with you. BUT he will show up in the next story arc. :3 Can you survive for that long?
Masks-san: I am so glad you took the time to write that review. It made my damn day, really. I am honored you think I've improved since I started. I don't read nearly enough fanfic to avoid cliches, but I try to pay attention and improve my technique as I go. Input is very appreciated as I reach for this goal! It surprises me that you empathize with Dib so much... Hopefully you will continue to do so throughout the story. I never intend for these things to affect people as much as they do XD I'm sorry I made you cry! But... I'm happy that it made such an impact. I hope you continue to stick with me :3
Aaaaand I think the end of the review got cut off. Now I'm wondering what you think about "new dib." lawl.
