Chapter III
The home of Hur was nothing short of a palace. It would rival the structures of any nation. The massive structure of rock and wood sat on acres of land surrounded by water. The rolling green hills reminded the banished prince of his home before his father turned on the other nations and burned everything green and good.
There was no scrambling from the people here. They were at peace because his father was dead. He was still-hunted but not with much vigor, he was just an after thought now only a small reward for his head, but he was not welcome in his own land. He would wander for the rest of his life.
Zuko turned away from the scenery and back toward the sleeping Waterbender and the smiling old woman watching him.What was she smiling? There was nothing amusing about his situation. He was their enemy and now he had a wife.
The carriage stopped and Tage opened the door and smiled at Zuko. “Welcome to the house of Hur. I will carry her in.”
He moved towards Katara’s sleeping body preparing to lift her from the bed when a strong hand grabbed his wrist. “That will not be necessary.”
The healer smiled and pulled away from the strong grip rubbing his wrist."You seem tired.”
“I carried her all the way to your village her weight is not much.”
“I am just here to help you; one should not disrespect those that have shown you kindness.”
“Your father has shown us kindness do not confuse yourself. My wife can heal herself and if she requires any further attention I will give it to her.”
Tage looked at the old woman walking from the carriage. “You would listen to the ranting of an old woman.”
“No I just do not trust anyone.”
“I healed your wife if that is what she is to you.”
It was the smile or smirk on Tage’s face that reminded Zuko of his sister. Her face looked exactly as his did when she intended evil on someone. He would have no peace because of his family. She was the cause of his running now. Tage would not run him away from here.
Zuko stood and stared down at the earthbender with harmful intentions if his facial expression did not change. “Would not a hot bath and new clothing improve your disposition my Nephew?”
His Uncle’s voice calmed the fire threatening to release from Zuko’s body. Just as quickly, as the fire departed it returned, as Tage approached Katara’s body. He was openly challenging him. This was not the reaction of a sane man. He wanted to see what Zuko would do. The former Fire nation Prince moved towards his prey with uncontrollable anger filling his body. Tage held his ground until they were inches apart; he smiled at Zuko, and then moved away.
She could hear the soft voices surrounding her as the darkness slowly began to recede in her mind. Katara opened her eyes to see a young man standing before her with a scar that covered his right eye and some of his cheek. His golden eyes held anger and coldness as he stared at her. He moved to sit on the bed beside her.
“Katara you are awake.”
His voice was unfamiliar to her and she closed her eyes and opened them again. Tage moved to the other side of the bed amazed that she recovered so quickly from her injuries.
Katara focused on the golden-eyed man again. “Who are you?”
“I am your …husband Lee.”
Katara tried to sit up and Zuko reached out to stop her but Tage was much faster. His strong hands held her shoulders down with ease. Katara’s eyes moved away from the cold man and towards the man holding her down. This man was handsome with green eyes that held kindness, warmth and something else she could not place.
“I am Tage the healer and you need more rest. Even though most of your wounds have healed in only a few hours your body requires rest.”
Katara turned away from him and back to Zuko. Her husband, he looked hard and uncaring; maybe her condition caused him to act that way. There had to be something that she loved in order for her to marry him.
Tage slowly removed his hands from her shoulders caressing the bare skin there as he did so. Zuko stared at him with dark eyes until a soft touch on his hand took his attention from the healer.
Iroh and Hur walked into the room to see the scene of Lee sitting beside his wife holding her hand with tenderness. Iroh smiled at his nephew’s confusion, he wanted to pull away but did not.
“She is making a rapid recovery.”
“Good” Hur said smiling at the young man lightly touching his wife’s hand.
Zuko gently ran his thumb over the softness of her dark skin. He could smell her soft scent from this distance. She was vulnerable. “I want her with me.”
Iroh smiled. Hur chuckled. “Cri said you would want that; that old woman thinks she knows everything.”
Tage nodded at his father. “I will move her wh…”
“That will not be necessary Tage your assistance to my wife is over.” With that, the banished fire Prince gently picked up his sleeping Waterbender and walked from the room.
Iroh smiled at the frowning healer. “He loves her a lot and is very protective of her.”
“As he should be, she is much too beautiful to be left alone.” Iroh moved aside as the healer walked from the room still angry over Zuko’s dismissal.
“He is very proud.”
Hur nodded. “It is to his detriment. I hear things of what he has done. He denies much Iroh. I am too old and weak to stop him and he knows that I will die soon and he will rule this village. I hope your nephew is strong enough to keep her safe from him. He desires pretty things. As soon as she is healed it would be in your best interest if you leave here.”
Iroh nodded.
~~~~~
Zuko paced his room with hard steps. What was he doing here? Why not just move away from those who challenged him? He moved from one war to another without rest. His Uncle had just involved him something he had no desire to end. He did not care if this healer wanted to abuse the Waterbender. She was no concern of his. She was part of his disgrace. She helped put him where he was now.
Zuko looked over at the sleeping woman lying in his bed with complete trust in him to keep her safe. She looked soft and weak now. She reminded him of his mother and all the abuse she suffered at the hands of his father. He could not save her then he was too young. He wondered if he could let another fall prey to someone just like his father now that he was strong.
He turned away from her closing his eyes trying to burn the image of his mother from his mind. It never left. There were things that just did not burn. His shoulders slumped as his attempts at erasing her memory failed. The prince opened his eyes and returned his gaze towards his sleeping enemy. He could not let her become the spoil of Tage or anyone else now that he was strong.
Familiar footsteps approaching his door broke his concentration on the woman lying on his bed. The door opened and the smiling face of the most annoying man he knew appeared.
“What have you put us in the middle of Uncle?”
Iroh smiled again and closed the door to Zuko’s room. “Are you thinking of her now?”
Zuko snorted and smoke came from his nose. What did he know of what he thought? He sometimes doubted his Uncle could hold a thought in his head. The unprovoked situations that Iroh put them in, enraged dangerous fires within the prince and this situation was just another example of his Uncle’s carelessness.
“I have known Hur from a long while. I spared his life at Ba sing Se and he has not forgotten that. He has shown us kindness in return.”
“What about his son? He does not want kindness for my wife, I mean Katara.”
Iroh smiled. “He is a problem but we can avoid him.”
The golden eyes became slits staring down at the smiling old general before him. Zuko was not good with avoiding things. He tended to run at the things that made others quiver and fear. He knew his Uncle knew this and he knew Tage would end up a pile of rubble.
A soft sigh turned Zuko’s attention towards his bed and the beautiful woman sleeping on it. What did she want now? He did not know how long he could pretend to be civil to her no matter how injured she was. His heavy footsteps moved him closer to the bed as her eyes opened. He stared down into pools of blue water and a smile that made him pause despite the anger running through his body. She did not know him but she was smiling at him.
Zuko moved closer until he was sitting beside her. He wished she stop smiling at him and stop looking at him. Her soft hand moved over his and he looked down at the small dark skin touching his rough skin, marring it with softness. He wanted to pull away but found it difficult and returned his eyes to hers.
“Hello my husband.”
