Chapter Three: The Visit.
The General and Joanna visit the Joes.
The Joes watched as the General stepped from the van and then turned around to assist another person from the van. That was when they noticed the wheelchair and knew that the girl in the chair was handicapped. Some of them moaned about it but kept it as quiet as possible.
“General Brantley, it is an honor that you could make it. Hello Joanna,” said Hawk, as he smiled towards her. He turned towards General Brantley as they started to walk towards the Joes who all quickly stood at attention as the General and Hawk walked by saluting as they passed.
Flint and Duke were walking behind the General and Hawk when Hawk stopped and looked at Joanna. “Joanna, you do not mind if I steal your father away for a private chat?”
“No sir, I do not mind. Though I would like to tour this base while you two are talking,” Joanna stated gently.
Hawk turned to look at the General, who nodded. “All right, Duke, Flint please escort Ms. Brantley around the base…no make that a tour of the entire base.”
Duke and Flint nodded as the General and Hawk walked away. Duke placed his hand on her shoulder as he smiled towards her. He had planned on asking for permission to show her around but she took it from him.
Hawk and General Brantley walked into the building when he turned towards Hawk and asked, “This visit you invited me was a ruse to get me here to do some work right?”
“Yes, I had no other choice as you left me none. The Senators didn’t like how you just left the base even though you could have came to the base for three hours and then returned home,” said Hawk.
“True, but Joanna she needs me,” the General stated, as they walked down the hallway to the General’s office.
“For now, my men will watch her and you can get some work done. Joanna will do okay,” smiled Hawk. The General thought for a moment before he nodded and entered his office and started to do some work.
Hawk walked away towards the window where he saw Joanna and the Joes just standing there. He knew they would take care of her fine and headed back to his own office for work of his own.
Joanna was introduced to the other Joes when Junkyard wiggled his way free and planted his feet right on Joanna’s legs as he pushed his face right into hers and started to kiss her. Mutt was shocked and ordered Junk down. When Junkyard didn’t obey, Mutt started to approach to get his dog down.
“Don’t, I’m not offended by Junk’s action, Mutt. He’s more than welcome to plant doggie kisses on me. Are you a good boy, Junk? Oh yes you are, Junk.” Joanna turned to Mutt before scratching Junkyard’s neck, who continued to put slobbering kisses on her face.
Junk got down off of her legs and placed himself right in front of her chair preventing anyone from getting near.
“Junk return to your handler. That’s an order, soldier,” Joanna stated in a firm voice, as Junk turned his head to look at her before walking over to Mutt.
“How did you know Junk would respond to an order like that?” asked Mutt.
“We had a military trained dog as a visitor once and he hung around me a lot. I think the handler didn’t approve of how he went to me and stuck by me; ordered him to return and he did as he was told. I told the soldier that I didn’t mind having him near me. The soldier didn’t want to look weak about commanding his own dog in front of my father and me,” said Joanna.
Mutt shook his head sadly. “What did he do?”
“He had to walk over and pick his dog up and haul him away from me and he apologized heavily for what his dog did. I told him that I did not mind him staying near me. My father told him that he didn’t see anything wrong with the dog only that dogs seem to like me a lot,” Joanna said gently.
“Okay, we better get this tour on the way,” smiled Duke, as they started to move away from the other Joes.
Joanna's tour continued through the base until she and Duke reached the recreation room. Voices inside were laughing about something said that was funny, and Duke silently opened the door to have a look at the source of the raucous cajoling.
Bazooka was never the sharpest tool in the shed and he didn't see that Joanna or Duke had entered the recreation room. He just continued on speaking with a broad smile on his face. "I doubt she'll ever be living on her own. Paralyzed people can't do the normal things that we can."
"I don't happen to be paralyzed, Bazooka," Joanna stated calmly. "I am able to walk, but not as well as I did a few months ago."
Beach-head, acting as if a ray of light finally dawned on him after ignoring Bazooka, grabbed the missile specialist by the shirt collar and growled. "Dammit Bazooka, you show respect to people in wheelchairs, or you might find yourself sitting in one for life!"
"What's eating you, Beach-head?" Bazooka asked in a surprised tone, withdrawing to wrench his shirt free from the ranger's grasp.
"My best friend in college was paralyzed from the waist down," Beach-head said angrily. "And he could do everything you can except walk and run! He was living on his own and he never considered himself to be disabled or even limited in the sense you would think. He just had to learn how to do things differently."
"That's a new way to look at it, Beach-head," said another voice from the recreation room door. The voice belonged to Doc, the team's field surgeon and all around handy medical man.
"Hi, Doc," Duke began. "I want you to meet Miss Joanna Brant…."
Doc seemed to show an immediate sense of recognition on his face before Duke finished the introductions, "Lady Hawke! What are you doing here? I was told you had been reduced to in-active duty status!" Doc moved quickly to her side and took hold of the lady's hand.
"I'm still an in-active member of the team, Doc," Joanna replied. "I just came with my father for a visit, that's all." Before turning her full attention to her conversation with Doc, Joanna could see out of the corner of her eye that Duke and the other Joes in the
recreation room had looks of shock on their faces at the doctor's revelation..
Flint and Duke eyed each other before Duke nodded. Flint went rushing out of the room towards the records to find out if what Doc was saying was true.
Flint rushed down the hallway as fast as his feet could carry him to where Mainframe was at still sitting at his computer terminal. “Mainframe, I want to look up a Joe that’s on in-active status?”
“Name or Joe nick?”
“Joe nick, Mainframe. It’s Lady Hawke,” Flint said, as he grabbed the back of his chair loosely.
“Lady Hawke? I have heard of that name before. I was here when Hawk put her name in the banks. She’s very good at hitting a target far away from where a normal sharpshooter could hit. She’s top of her class at West Point. Okay, here it is,” Mainframe stated.
Flint read over the file and noticed what Joanna was – it floored him. “Print the file out!”
Flint placed the file in a folder and rushed out of the room towards the recreation room where he slowly entered the room to see Joanna still talking with Doc. Flint went to Duke’s side and whispered, "I have her file and yes, she’s a Joe."
Duke turned to look at Flint before he turned his eyes to the file and read over the file itself. It was very complete but the red letters that stated inactive was stamped over her photograph. Duke walked out of the room with Flint behind him. “This cannot be happening,”
“What?”
“I had always wondered why she looked familiar to me and now I know why,” Duke stated.
“You met her before?”
“No, you remember when I took Lady Jaye to that Olympic trial in Lexington, KY nine months back,”
“Yes, I remembered that both of you were a bit shaken when you returned. What happened on the detail?”
“We both saw a terrible accident involving a horse and rider. I think I better ask Joanna if she was that rider Lady Jaye and I saw,” Duke said, calmly, as they walked back into the room to see Joanna talking with the others.
Lady Jaye’s eyes went wide when she heard the words come from Joanna as she turned towards Duke and went to his side. “Is she…is she the rider we saw that day, Duke?” she whispered to him. All he did was nod.
Beachhead asked, “Joanna, what is this three day trial?”
“This trial is set for the Equestrians side of the Olympic Games that is to be held later this coming summer.” Joanna stated calmly.
Duke realized that the day was late and if he was to finish the tour, he would have to push her out of the recreation room. “Joanna, I would love to stay put and have you discuss the three day event with them, but we do not have much time if we want to finish the tour.”
“Right, my father wouldn’t be too thrilled if he had to haul my butt back here to finish the tour when it could have been finished today,” giggled Joanna, as she looked up at him.
Flint and the others watched as Joanna and Duke went out of the room. Doc followed them till they made a turn in the hallway. He wondered why she talked about being stuck in the wheelchair. It was not so in the medical files he had on her. He knew he needed to go over them again. He turned and hurried to his office where he went through the files looking for the nick Lady Hawke. He found the file and pulled it out. Doc walked to his desk and opened the file and began to read the contents of the file.
‘What the…? I know that she can walk just fine.’ thought Doc, as he flipped through the file again searching for something that is not there anymore. He turned on his computer screen; typed in his password and typed Lady Hawke’s name into the box. He found her medical file but the missing part of the file was not there. Doc groaned as he stared at the screen. ‘Who would have access to her medical files here at the base?’
The tour of the base was winding down as Duke and Joanna neared her father’s office to see him and Hawk standing outside of the doors talking in a low but angry whisper.
Hawk turned towards Joanna and Duke. He smiled as he asked, “Joanna; how would you like to have an open ended pass to come to the base when you want to till you return to active duty?”
“I would love that, sir. I know you will have to put a Joe as escort for me, may I suggest someone?” asked Joanna.
“Sure,”
“Lady Jaye, unless she’s on a mission,”
“We’ll see when you return,” said Hawk, glancing over to see General Brantley fuming towards him.
“Oh, we will be returning tomorrow. I want to talk with the other Joes, especially Beachhead, he’s cool and my father can get more work done,” Joanna said, as she looked at Hawk.
Hawk seemed to be very pleased by her suggestion and agreed to grant her an open ended pass. He smiled as they headed down the corridor. “That worked out better than I hoped.”
“What do you mean Hawk?” Duke turned to look at his commanding officer.
“I was about to suggest that she comes back tomorrow as it would force her father to come with her and get tomorrow’s papers finished. The only way for him to stop coming here is if he was to retire officially but he won’t retire as long as his daughter needs him,” Hawk said as they walked down the hall to the recreation room.
The van was driving away from the base when Joanna turned to her father and asked, “Father, tell me the truth about what happened in the hospital about my legs?”
“You know what had happened. No more words about it. You are stuck within the chair for life,” snapped General Brantley, glancing over at her before resuming his gaze at the road.
“Father, you know I need to know . . .” spoke Joanna.
“No you do not need to know. I told you what the doctors told me. I’m sorry that we had to put Star down but his leg was destroyed beyond repair and even if we were able to repair the leg, he would have died from the infection,” General Brantley snapped, turning to look at her. “Please I made sure that he went as fast as possible without suffering like you would have wanted.”
Joanna growled under her breath. She always hated how he would refuse to answer her questions about her legs – he always switched it to her horse knowing that would hush all discussion on it. She turned towards the window and watched as several Joes went about their daily duties. She sighed as she thought back to the day of her accident.
~ ~ ~ ~ Flashback ~ ~ ~ ~
The ride in the endurance part of the trial was going smooth and was faster than she had hoped for till the water jump. Joanna urged Starbright over the jump but she heard a crack but thought it was just Starbright slamming against the jump as he leapt over it. It was only when they got ready to jump the next one; when he fell forward against the jump itself.
Everything went slow motion for her as she struck the jump with the helmet. The next thing she saw was people on Starbright holding him down. She was screaming as they tugged and pulled her from underneath him before she passed out again from the pain.
When she woke, she found her leg in a full cast from her foot to the middle of her thigh. She turned her head to see her father sitting by her side. “Father, what happened to…?”
“I’m sorry, Starbright had to be destroyed. His right foreleg was shattered beyond repair, Joanna. I had the vets put him down as soon as they told me how bad it was. There was nothing they could do to save him,” spoke General Brantley, as he held her hand. He followed her gaze to her leg. “Your leg was broken in three places. They are talking about you losing your leg. Joanna? Joanna?”

“Joanna? Joanna, we’re home. Wake up sweetie,” spoke Brantley, as he gently shook her awake.
Joanna rubbed her eyes and looked up at her father. “I need to sleep, father,”
“This day has worn you out,” he whispered, as he helped her get to the door and pushed her into the house and to her room, where her assistant came to help her into bed.
Stay tuned, the next one is coming.
