Chapter 3: Into the Fire
Zim groaned as the lights in the room snapped on, and Dib and the redheaded female scientist walked into the room in their white lab coats.
“There, you see? All of the burns have healed. And it looks like his eye has healed as well.” Dib grinned proudly.
Zim didn’t even lift his head, closing his eyes wearily.
“Amazing…” the female scientist murmured, walking over to the metal table and pulling Zim’s eyelids apart, inspecting the eye that had been blinded the previous morning.
The Irken shuddered and pulled away from her touch, clenching his eyes closed again.
“And you see that the burn from the meat is starting to heal, although it’s still noticeable.” Dib pointed out.
The redhead nodded. “Yes…his rate of healing is definitely impressive.” She looked at Dib and smiled. “So, were you planning on anything specific today?”
Dib leered sadistically. “Well, I’d like to test my theory about his hearing.”
“Oh, yes! Your theory about his antennae...” The female scientist walked over to stand behind Zim’s head, pinching the base of Zim’s antennae, giggling when the Irken cried out sharply. “My, my, they seem to be quite sensitive!”
Zim clenched his teeth in rage. Heartless bitch-monkey…he shuddered, feeling a strong wave of nausea as the female ran her fingertips down to the base of his antennae. How dare she touch him like that…
“They’re quite smooth…I wonder if there are any bones inside of them?”
“Only one way to find out…” A sadistic gleam showed in Dib’s eyes. “Let’s cut one off.”
The Irken’s eyes snapped open and he gaped at Dib in absolute horror. “NO!!” Zim cried, wrenching at the restraints. “No!!” He swallowed his pride, his voice a desperate whine. “Please…”
Dib quirked a brow, grinning. “Well, that’s the first time I’ve ever heard him use that word.” He snickered.
Zim clenched his eyes closed. “Please…don’t do this…”
The scientist shook her head with detached amusement, her voice a sickly-sweet lilt. “We must learn about you, which means we’ll have to take one off, my little one.”
Zim tossed his head violently as the female approached with the scalpel, and she frowned. “Dib, would you be so kind as to hold his head still?”
Dib smirked. “My pleasure.” He slapped Zim hard when the Irken tried to bite him, then held Zim’s head down firmly against the autopsy table.
Zim whined, his whole body trembling as he felt the sharp edge of the scalpel press against the base of his left antenna.
“Excuse me, forgive the interruption, but Professor Membrane has just stopped by and he wishes to see you both.”
Dib and the female scientist looked up, and the scientist smiled. “Oh, all right Stacey, that’s no problem at all. Could you just keep an eye on our precious charge while we’re speaking with the Professor, then?”
“Of course.” Stacey smiled. “Professor Membrane is waiting in the reception area for you both. He said he might step out for a coffee, so if he’s not in the lounge when you get there, he should only be a few minutes.”
“All right, then.” The scientist set her scalpel aside and patted Zim on the head before leaving the room with Dib. “We’ll be right back, love.”
As Stacey approached, Zim gazed at her imploringly. “You…I haven’t seen you before…” he swallowed hard, pulling against his bonds, his expression desperate. “Please, have mercy…deactivate me…please…they’re going to cut off my antennae and remove my pak by force …I have a self-destruct switch, all you have to do is push it…” Tears escaped his eyes although he tried to force them back, and he swallowed hard, his antennae curling submissively against the sides of his head. “Please… I beg you, destroy me…”
Tak, having knocked Stacey out and programmed the holographic generator she was wearing to mimic Stacey’s exact appearance, gazed at Zim for a long moment. And in that moment, she felt an overwhelming sense of pity. She’d never seen a fellow Irken reduced to such a state, especially an Irken soldier. And no matter how much she hated Zim, she wouldn’t wish this type of suffering on anyone, even him. She stepped forward, her voice low as she spoke, quickly removing the ankle restraints.
“I will not deactivate you, Zim, and neither will you.”
Zim was far too upset to register that this Stacey person somehow knew his name, but her words distressed him. “What?”
“You heard me.” Tak/Stacey growled. “If you so much as reach for that switch you will suffer my wrath.” She pulled an anesthetic out of her pak and administered it to Zim, knocking him out and then dumping the drawer full of files which contained the information gathered on Zim since his arrival at the centre onto the floor, one of her spider-legs extending from her pak and sending a sharp laser blast into the centre of the pile, setting it ablaze. Another spider-leg lashed out and destroyed all of the cameras filming the proceedings, and then shot forward and fried all of the hard drives of every computer in the lab. Undoing the wrist restraints, she grabbed Zim and pulled him into her arms, hurrying out of the ward on her spider-legs, rushing out into the parking lot where her new Voot runner was disguised as a severely damaged ambulance (so no-one would take it, of course). She leapt into the Voot and set Zim down, ordering Nara, her brand new SIR unit, to hold onto him carefully so the takeoff would not jar his undoubtedly injured body. Cloaking the ship, she lifted off into the air and sped towards her base.

Zim awoke groggily, groaning in pain and curling into a ball, holding his knees against his chest, his antennae quivering.
Tak watched him, once again feeling pity for Zim in light of his suffering. It had taken her an hour to remove the titanium shield placed over Zim’s pak, as it had been welded on in several places. She would need access to his pak in order to proceed with the execution. “You’re safe.” For now, she thought to herself.
Zim eventually came around, his eyes opening slowly. He looked around, finally meeting Tak’s eyes and gasping. “Tak!” He tried to scramble away, but he was in too much pain to move more than a few inches, and the effects of the tranquilizer were still impeding his motor skills. “What are you doing here? Where am I? W-who brought me here?” He started panting rapidly, wrapping his arms tightly around his body and shivering.
Tak sighed. “You’re inside my base, and I am the one who brought you here.”
Zim blinked at her incredulously. It must have been the drugs, because he thought he’d just heard Tak say that she rescued him. “You? You brought me here?”
Tak rolled her eyes. “That’s what I said, Zim.” She shook her head. “You’re just as dense as you were the first time I found you here.” she muttered.
Zim flinched at the insult, looking away. “I…” he swallowed hard, shuddering again. “Thank you…” he honestly didn’t know what else to say. Tak had saved him from an excruciating world of suffering, and had brought him to a place where he would be safe. Well, safe until she saw fit to destroy him. He closed his eyes, sighing heavily. What was that saying humans used sometimes? Out of the pot and into the fire? No…that wasn’t it…but it was the general idea. Opening his eyes, he gazed wearily at Tak. “You came back to destroy me, didn’t you?”
Tak quirked an antenna. “Well, perhaps you aren’t as dense as when I first found you here.” She crossed her arms haughtily. “And yes, that’s exactly what I came back for. The Tallests will pay me handsomely for destroying you. They will promote me to the rank of Invader, and make me a first class member of the fleet.”
Zim sighed. “So then that’s why you rescued me.” His antennae were still quivering. “I see.” Zim closed his eyes wearily. “I knew it was only a matter of time until the Tallests sent someone to dispatch me.”
“Hmm…you’re definitely not as stupid as when I first came to Earth.”
Zim didn’t reply other than to curl up into a tighter ball, his teeth gritted. When he finally spoke, his tone was one of resignation. “So are you going to destroy me now?”
Tak stretched and shook her head. “No…I don’t really feel like killing you right now. I think I’m going to go and have a nap first.”
“Better you than that horrible Dib-beast.” Zim shuddered, then opened his eyes, looking up at Tak questioningly. “Unless you plan to torture me as well?”
Tak shrugged. “We’ll see how I feel when I wake up.”
Zim grabbed the thin blanket folded at his feet and wrapped it around himself. “I hope your sleep is pleasant, then.”
Tak blinked at him for a moment, then turned and left. As she lay back on her bed and gazed up at the ceiling, she considered the things that Zim had said. He was definitely far more mature and insightful than he had been ten years ago. Not that it really mattered. She had a job to do, and she was going to do it in order to please her Tallests and to achieve the status she had always dreamed of.
Tak drifted off with a smile on her face.

Oh so much love to all who read and reviewed! I smile!
To Makota: Well, as you can see, Tak has been fully (re-)equipped by the Tallests...and I don't think Dib and Zim are really going to be on very good terms in this one...
To hellsoldier: LOL thanks for the reviewyness. *lurve*
To Tugera: ah, I've said that many times myself. I kinda feel bad for Zim, though...*pets poor little Irken Zim*
