Chapter 3- Confession.
Kimi gingerly walked into the coffee shop. It wasn't her families place, the Java Lava. But was a smaller place across town. It was run down and looked ready to go out of business, yet her father still considered the place competition.
Dill was sitting on a table in the center of the room, wearing a trench coat and dark sunglasses. Kimi wandered over and sat down opposite him.
"The red haddock flies at midnight." He whispered to her. Kimi sighed, she wasn't in the mood to play any of his spy games.
"Dill, please." He sighed and pulled off the shades. He snapped his fingers to get the attention of the woman behind the counter.
"Garcon, two cappuccinos." He yelled. The woman tutted disapprovingly, but began to fill the order.
"Lets start with the obvious." He said, getting unusually serious.
"You're Doctor. D." Said Kimi before he could continue. Dill smiled and nodded his head.
"Tough to get more obvious than that." The waitress came over and put their coffees onto the table.
"Garcon means boy." She muttered to Dill and wandered off back to the counter.
"Look Dill, about what I said in that chat room."
"You mean about you being gay? Or the fact you used my brother for sex to find out that you were gay?"
Kimi looked downward, unable to meet his gaze.
"I'm not happy about what I did. I just had to know." Dill didn't accept her excuse.
"So you fucked my brother." Dill almost yelled it, he was only just containing his anger. "Tommy thinks you want a relationship with him. He can't figure out why you're avoiding him. He has a right to know why you did that to him. What about Suzy? Does she know how you feel about her? It's not fair to let her think you only want to be a friend. They both have a right to know the truth." Kimi grabbed his hands and stared desperately into his eyes.
"Please. Dill you can't. You have to keep it a secret. For me, please, I will tell them, but I need a little time." Dill pulled his hands away from her grip. He still looked quite angry.
"You have to tell them, you can't keep something like this a secret forever." Kimi dropped her head into her hands and fought hard to hold back the tears.
"I know. I know." She muttered. "But I just need the right words and the right time."
Dill became serious and leaned forward.
"Your afraid of what they will think. Because of that fear, it will always seem like the wrong time. The best thing for you, and them, is to just gather them together and tell them. No big speeches, you don't need anything fancy. All you have to do is say those three little words. 'I am gay'."
"Then watch my life crash around me." Kimi said gloomily. Dill pulled back in his seat.
"You know why psychologists have so many different theories about why people behave the way they do? Because human beings are unpredictable. What works for one person, won't work for a dozen others. You may expect the best-case scenario, or you may expect the worst. But the truth is that you have absolutely no idea what will happen until it happens."
Kimi sat in silence for a few minutes as Dills words made their impact, as much as she didn't want them to.
"Where did you pick up all this stuff?" Dill laughed and shrugged his shoulders.
"I took a course over the Internet. You're looking at Doctor Dill Pickles. I just set up the chat room because apparently I can't open my own real practise until I graduate high school." Kimi laughed, only Dill would think of becoming a psychiatrist over an Internet course and actually pass. She felt good laughing, she hadn't done it in so long that she could have sworn she'd forgotten how.
Finally her good mood faded and she sighed deeply.
"Your right of course. I have to tell them." She broke his gaze and looked down at her quickly cooling coffee, but she didn't feel like drinking it.
"But when?" Dill pressured her. Kimi thought about it for a moment. Inspired by Dills words of wisdom, she knew sooner was better.
"Tonight. I'll get everyone together and tell them tonight." She said it with calmness in her voice. But unseen, under the table, her hands were shaking.
************************
"Last number. Come one Kimi, you can do it." She dialed from memory the last number of their group. The last person she needed to gather to her meeting tonight. Her hands shook and she had to take care not to miss-dial.
"Hello?" Asked a voice at the other end of the phone.
"Suzy. It's Kimi." Her voice shook and almost stammered. Suzy became instantly concerned.
"What's the matter? Do you want me to come over?" Kimi had to pause for a moment to gather her thoughts 'More than anything' she thought. 'I want you to come here and let me love you.'
"I need you to come here tonight." Was what she said. "I'm coming out and I need a friend." It hurt her just to say 'friend' but she knew it was the only thing she could say.
"I'll be right there at your side. Don't worry, It'll be fine. Who are you telling tonight?"
"Everyone. Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lill, Angelica and my parents."
"Are you sure that's the best thing? I mean maybe you can tell your parents first and then your friends. Or your friends first then your parents."
"No." Kimi interrupted. "I have to tell everyone or I'll never tell anyone." Suzy sighed, but it was a sigh of understanding.
"When do you want me to be there?"
************************
Tommy was the last to arrive. He was practically being dragged by Dill up the path.
"I don't want to do this Dill." He tried to shrug off his brother's grip, but Dill held on tightly.
"Come on, T, Kimi said she had something important to tell us. It'd break her heart if some of us weren't there." Finally Tommy stopped resisting. He may be uncomfortable in Kimi's presence, but he wouldn't ever disappoint a friend.
Dill knocked on the door and Kimi's father opened the door.
"Hey Mr. F." Said Dill walking straight in.
"Hello boys." He replied in his nasal voice. "Kimi will be down in a moment. Everyone else is in the den. Would you like something to drink?"
"No thanks." Replied Tommy as he wandered into the den and took an empty seat next to Chuckie.
"What's this all about." He asked in a hushed whisper. Chuckie shook his head.
"I'm as clueless as you. Kimi just said she had something she wanted to tell everyone. Then she's spent to rest of the day in her room."
"Well she better be quick." Complained Angelica. "I'm missing my favourite show."
In her room Suzy was talking to Kimi, trying to comfort the fearful girl. Kimi sat on her bed, holding her legs tight against her chest and slowly rocking back and forth.
"I can't do this Suzy. I can't tell them." Suzy rested a hand on her friends back and slowly rubbed up and down.
"It'll be alright Kimi. No matter what happens I'll be at your side. You're guaranteed one friend out of all this."
Kimi began to cry, loud and long sobs. Suzy wrapped her arms around her and rocked her like a mother would a frightened child.
"They're all going to hate me." She cried bitterly. Suzy rested a hand on Kimi's chin and tilted her head upwards so their eyes locked.
"When I found out you were gay I didn't hate you. Your still my friend." Kimi turned her head and stared at the wall.
"You're going to hate me too." She muttered, but Suzy heard it and laughed disbelievingly.
"Why would I ever hate you?" Kimi couldn't bare to meet her gaze and continued to stare at the wall. For some reason, not looking at Suzy made it easier, like she could pretend she wasn't there and that Kimi was in fact, taking to thin air and was merely practising a speech for later.
"The other day you asked me if I had a special girl in mind. I do." Suzy smiled.
"Well that's great, you've managed to find yourself a girl." Kimi turned and looked at her friend. Suzy's smile dropped at the sight of Kimi's grim expression.
"It's you."
Suzy took her arms away from around Kimi and slid to the other end of the bed.
"I wanted to tell you so many times." Kimi continued. "But I was afraid that it would destroy our friendship. But I can't tell the truth and still keep lies from you." She reached out a hand toward Suzy, but as she approached Suzy pulled away.
"I thought you were my friend. I trusted you. All this time you just wanted to..." She trailed off and jumped to her feet. "I thought you were my friend." She repeated as she made for the door.
"Suzy wait." Kimi sobbed, her tears were starting again and her pained voice made Suzy hesitate, just for a second.
"I need you there. I can't tell them without you. If your not there, I won't be strong enough."
Suzy didn't say anything. Nor did she turn and look at Kimi. After a few seconds, her hand returned to the door handle and she walked off.
Nearly fifteen minutes later. Kimi finally descended the stairs and walked into the living room.
"Finally." Complained Angelica. "I thought you'd never get here."
"Be quiet. She's here now." Called up Lill. Angelica sulked but fell silent.
Kimi stood in front of them all. She was shaking with fear and her eyes stayed glued to the floor.
"I have something to tell you all." She muttered, she was quiet, but everyone managed to hear her.
"What is it?" Inquired her mother. Kimi raised her head and looked at them all, her heart was pounding in her chest and she felt like she was going to be sick. With ragged breathing she felt light headed and wanted nothing more than to run away and shut herself in her room.
"I...I...I." She began, but never finished.
"Go on Kimi." Called out a sweet voice.
Kimi looked around and saw Suzy standing in the doorway with the same sweet smile that she loved on the girl. Kimi's lip twitched and she wiped a happy tear from her eye. Suzy had come back, to stand by her just like she promised. Taking a deep breath Kimi felt better, her heart slowed down, and she no longer felt nauseous.
"The last few months, I've known that there's something different about me. For the longest time I was unsure and when I did figure it out I tried so hard to deny it. But I can't hide it anymore. I am gay."
There was a stone silence and once more the feelings of nausea returned. Kimi admitted to herself, that this was the most nerve-racking moment of her life. She wanted to run, but she kept her eyes on Suzy and that made her stay.
Tommy was the first to act. He didn't say a word, he just jumped to his feet and ran out of the house, closely followed by Dill.
"Cool." Came out of Phil' mouth, and Lill climbed to her feet and put a hand on Kimi's shoulder.
"It was brave to tell us all at once." She gave Kimi a hug and a reassuring smile.
Her parents stayed in their seats and said nothing. Chuckie looked nervous and his eyes glanced at the open front door Tommy had run out of seconds before. He climbed to his feet and stood next to her.
"Are you sure?" He asked, almost concerned. Kimi stared at the floor for a moment as memories she was ashamed of surfaced.
"Very sure." He smiled, but still looked uneasy.
"Whatever makes you happy."
Angelica climbed to her feet and slowly made her way toward the front door. She rubbed her hands together and smiled slyly.
"Wait until everyone hears about this."
Suzy rushed Angelica and pinned her to the wall.
"You're not going to say a word. Kimi will let people know in her own time." Angelica shrugged her off and stared at her disbelievingly.
"Are you nuts? This is the best news since Samantha Timmons had her nose job. If you think I'm keeping this a secret…" Suzy interrupted her by grabbing a handful of Angelica's blonde hair and yanking it hard. Angelica's head was thrown back and she fell to her knees.
"You listen to me. You *will* keep this a secret. You will let Kimi take all the time she wants to come out and tell others. Or I swear to god your going to regret it." She let her go and Angelica leapt to her feet and jumped back from Suzy. She'd never seen the girl this upset about anything before.
"Alright." She sulked, rubbing the patch of hair Suzy had been yanking on. "I'll let the little dyke keep her secret." She stormed off out of the house.
Kimi came over and placed a hand on Suzy's shoulder.
"Thank you." She said. Suzy shrugged off Kimi's grip and didn't turn to face her.
"I'm going to need a little time with this. I need to be alone to get things straightened out in my head." She walked off into the night, leaving Kimi alone in the hallway.
Kimi couldn't fight the tears. But she didn't want to break down in front of her family and remaining friends. She turned and ran up their stairs and slammed the door of her bedroom shut.
