Movers and Shakers
Part 3
by Reppa
The next morning was relatively busy, seeing as half of the team seemed to have overslept. Wildwing sighed as he waited in the waiting room with Mallory and Grin until it was around eleven when the others groggily dragged themselves out of bed. Their excuses were as followed, Tanya had been doing research and Duke and Nosedive had trouble getting to sleep.
Wildwing sighed as he motioned towards the elevator, "I guess we'll just run practice a little later than usual, come on." The rest of the ducks nodded, a particularly wide grin on Mallory's face as they went topside. The white mallard looked at Duke's shoulder inquiringly, but figured, yay or nay, Duke was still going to practice for fear of falling behind. The tall drake found himself tilting his head in puzzlement when he noticed the stressed silence between his younger brother and the thief, something he decided to tuck away and aboutbout later.
After they had all changed, they skated out into the rink, Duke pausing momentarily and looking at his skate curiously. He shrugged before he began ignoring the ht kht kink in the blade and dashed out across the ice. Mallory smirked as she skated alongside him, glancing briefly at the drake, "Problems?"
"Naw."
"Okay." After that, she checked him into the board before taking off, leaving him to pull himself off of the floor with a curse. What is with that chick? he wondered, getting to his feet and making his way past Grin and on his way to, pass Nosedive when it happened. His skate blade broke and soon after he fell to the ground, Wildwing's younger brother went with him and the strap on his helmet snapped.
Nosedive's blades were good and far away from the older duck's head, promising no damage. But there was the issue of the immensely bigger duck who fell backwards on the ice when he tried to stop, -his- blades aimed right at Duke's beak. There wasn't any way Duke would have managed to get out of the way, having Nosedive practically on his, leaving him the only option of covering his face and hoped for the best. But there wasn't a sharp painful impact, instead it was more like Grin bumped into them and when Duke removed his arms from his face his jaw dropped as he saw the teen covering him and taking the blow to his upper arm.
Grin looked a little dazed as he sat up before gaping at the damage done, the others rushing over to help the trio up, save Mallory who slowly made her way over, a grimace on her beak and hissing slightly, "Damn, perfect shot, too."
The thief looked up at Nosedive, dropping his arms as he tried to relax, "Kid....?"
"Eugh...ow," was the start of Dive's response, which was followed by, "Nothing to it-Ow!"
When they all managed to be on their feet, Dive's wound turned out to be some rather fleshy, but not altogether serious wound that a little cleaning and bandaging wouldn't hurt. As Grin and Mallory escorted Nosedive back down to headquarters, Tanya picked up the broken blade and helmet and looked analytically at them, "This was, um, sabotage."
The two remaining drakes looked at her in surprise, Duke had an arm slung over Wildwing's shoulder as the white mallard steadied him, "How do ya know, Tanya?"
"Well, ah, the blade was filed and the strap on your helmet was kinda, well y'know, ah cut."
"Now who would do sucha thing?"
Wildwing frowned and looked back over the ice as the three of them headed towards the locker room, he intended to find out who would and they weren't going to like going up against an overly protective, 175 pound mallard with muscles to back that weight.
*
Mallory scoffed as Nosedive fidgeted squisquirmed on the table as the wound was bound. She couldn't believe that the only thing that kept Duke from losing his other eye or getting a permanently mangled beak was this brat's arm. So, in retaliation, she made sure the binding process hurt.
Grin stood behind her, watching over her shoulder and mentally noting the immense bad karma he felt from his smaller teammate while he wrestled with his slight guilt. He was relieved he wasn't the one to possibly kill a fellow player, but still he felt for for injury to another. He stepped back as Mallory finished and Nosedive scrambled off of the table, "Dude, that was harsh, Mal mal!"
"Don't call me that anymore..."
He blinked as she snapped at him, watching her stomp out of the room and shrugged when he turned to Grin, "So? What's the haps?"
"There are some angry vibes I sense from a couple of my fellow teammates, and Duke looked distraught."
Nosdive blinked while he tilted his head, distraught wasn't part of his vocabulary, but he shrugged it off as well, deciding he'd go see how Duke faired himself. He dashed out of the infirmary, coddling his arm as he rushed into the Ready Room where the trio stood, Duke not seeming to bring himself to look him in the eye now. Dude, now he won't even look at me??
He was greeted by his older brother who wanted to know how his arm was, if he was in any shock, if the others tended it right and a few more ifs, ares, and hows. But the teen's attention kept straying to the thief who seemed to be inching out of the room to avoid any confrontation with him. Disregarding any courtesy in answering these fussy questione she shot after Duke and caught up to him at his bedroom door, getting a hold of the older duck's arm so as not to lose him. "Hey Dukester, what's with the really chilly shoulder? Are you cool?"
Duke looked at him with his good eye, frowning slightly since he didn't want o ovo over this. "I'm fine, just a little shaken."
"Dude, you were petrified out there, can't blame ya."
"I was shaken."
Dive shook a hand out in front of him, "Okay, okay, okay. I get it, you were just a lil bit rattled." He was rewarded with a curt nod before the thief tried to get away again, but he maintained a grip with his good arm, "Duke, why won't you talk to me?!"
"Because it's weird now!"
After he jumped back in surprise, Dive lost his grip on the gray drake's arm and the thief managed to slide into his room and shut the door without anymore incident. In a little frustration, Nosedive slammed his good hand on the wall with a slight wince, "I don't get you and your closing off from everyone else, I'm outty!"
*
Duke sighed softly as he listened to the young duck's tantrum and folded his arms, this was getting a little out of hand for him, and if it got anymore out of hand, he'd lose his ability to stop it. "The next thing I'll know, I'll end up bunking beds with Wing or Dive and I'd rather not put them through any trouble..."
Now, he had two people with the hots for him, a techie who wanted him on the scanner bed for a -full- body check, someone on the team who wanted him dead he khe knew just who it was, and he had come within seconds of the group finding out his little secret. But the worse of it was Nosedive's sudden interest in knowing him, since the kid had tried to study him on several occasions and now it was becoming more frequent.
"...."
Rubbing his arms in discomfort, Duke settled himself on his couch and leaned his head back. Dive was also reading him better. The kid had been right, he wasn't shaken out there, he had been terrified. If those blades hit, either his face or his hands would have been minced and that had scared him. I lost enough physically and emotionally, I can't afford anymore; he told himself, running a hand through his length of white hair and resting it on the back of his neck with his fingers tangled in the pony tail.
"Damn, damn, damn..." More attention than he wanted, or needed. He was the quiet, watching one most of the time; restricting himself to the confines of the room and only coming out when he was needed. This wasn't usual for him, it felt fairly ominous and now he had a feeling he was going lose his cool.<
*
It was around four o'clock in the afternoon when the team was gathered in the Ready Room for something of a discussion, today's practice and the accident that happened. Wildwing crossed his arms over his chest as he looked the group over, his gaze pausing on his brother and Duke before it settled on Mallory with a frown of his brow, "Well..."
"Someone has to come clean, and I want it now."
Everyone on the team looked at each other save Duke as Wildwing continued, "The only people with access to the locker rooms are ourselves. And the we're the only other people who would possibly know another person's locker combination. On another note, the sabotage is too targeted on one individual and too fussy a job, so we know the saurians didn't do it. Then one of the two people who have grudges against Duke is in jail, and I'm looking at the other one." He frowned at Mallory, who returned his glare with an appalled
expression.
"Now why would -I- do that?! I would never endanger a fellow teammate."
"Those who deny it when not accused of anything, -are- the perpetrators themselves." Grin commented slightly, looking down at the small femme, "Not to mention there were seriously heated vibes you gave off that suggested something also."
Wildwing shook his head, a hand to his forehead in slight disbelief. He couldn't believe Mallory would resort to something like this, but given her temper and her will to carry it out, it also made it believable. As he listened to Mallory argue her case against the others, he noticed Duke sitting down by the console with his elbow on the top with his cheek on his knuckles, he looked relatively calm about this.
"Duke...?"
The thief looked at him, before glancing at Mallory, "S'no prob, I get treatment like this from lottsa jealous ducks, even when I don't have what they want."
The word have was a gross turn around of want. Wildwing was aware Duke was trying to push him away, he pushed a lot of people away and the rest just left well enough alone, so the smaller drake wasn't used to having the person push back. He frowned down at Duke before he looked up to see Mallory stomp off, seeming thoroughly through with being accused. With a shake of his head, he sat down himself, wondering what to do with a duck who wanted another dead over the guy she liked who liked the one she wanted dead. It was some psychopathic cycle they had going.
Then he decided this all called for a private discussion as he got up and grabbed Duke's arm, "Come on, we need to talk."
That in itself was enough to give Duke's internal systems a chance to set off alarms as he tried to worm out of the taller drake's arm, "No, we don't." His objections fell on deaf ears as he was pulled from his seat and dragged up to the Pond and let go when Wildwing made sure he had no way to run back down to his room. "Wing, this is pointless, there is nothing...I repeat, -nothing- to discuss."
Wildwing shook his head as he crossed his arms again, "There's plenty to discuss. Now, would you prefer to talk like this or on the ice while your firing pucks at me for dragging you up here?"
"I'd check you rather than aim pucks at your head..."
"I feel the love."
"Don't." There was a surprising amount of bitterness in Duke's tone, which suggested that this was most likely due to all the bad experience the older duck had been through.
"Let me guess...." Wildwing began, now both of them in their hockey gear while Duke did a little target practice, "You've put up with a terrible childhood, and through your life you've been with countless people, gotten burned an infinite amount of times and you're filled with a deep hate for the word love."
All of that was on the money as Duke snarled at him, threw down the stick and tackled him on the ice, sitting on his stomach, "What would make you believe sucha load of shit?!"
"Well, other than your reaction...?"
The one-eyed thief took off a glove, tossing it down on Wildwing's beak, breathing heavily and somewhat blinded by a little rage, "Don't get me started...that's only half of what I've been through. There is no such thing as love, it's just bullshit they put into kids' heads to make them believe that when they go out into the world they'll find that perfect someone, have that perfect home, and live that perfect life, happily ever after! Well, that doesn't happen! Ever, it's a loada bull!"
Wildwing propped himself up on his elbows as he looked up at him, a little surprised at how pessimistic Duke truly was. He tilted his head, venturing a little, "Well, nothing's perfect, that's true. But that doesn't mean you can't find that right someone."
"Well, you lose that idea after twenty fricking years, you nimrod."
Oh, now we're getting into name calling. "No one said you'd find it easily."
"No one said it would be hard either, and your point being?"
Watching Duke slide off of his stomach with an ungraceful flop, Wildwing sat up and leaned forward, "My point is, if there's something good for you coming at you, don't treat it like it's as bad as everything else you've put up with. There's no abuse, no yelling, no lying or cheating or double crossing. You know you can trust us, we've all been living here for over a year now. This may be a sign for you to get a new life and stop being bogged down with your old."
Duke was giving him the coldest, most bitter, and rather resentful glare as he got to his feet, "I don't need you or any of them to be happy."
"So you're content with locking yourself up and getting eaten alive from your hate?"
"Yep."
Wildwing bolted to his feet, he couldn't believe what he was hearing as he grabbed Duke's shoulders and giving him a shake, "Are you enjoying all of this or what?! You hate the feeling but you won't let go, why?!"
"Because I'll bring everyone else down with me if I do, just like Mallory!!" After that outburst, Duke pushed away and bolted, not for HQ, but outside. He felt he'd have an easier time hiding out there and sneaking in later instead of going down with Wildwing. He phased into his trench coat, black sweater and leather pants as he made his way to the mall, figuring that if he was followed, it'd provide a good hiding spot.
*
Nosedive gulped loudly as he leaned on the wall, having heard every little word spoken and shocked Duke was still going to put up with his misery. That guy needs to do something good with himself for once! He watched his brother from around the corner as the white mallard went back in after staring in the direction the thief had stormed off.
When his brother went in, Dive exited through the back door and pulled off the covering over the duckcycle he had decided to borrow. He grinned a little, getting on and putting on a helmet, Duke couldn't outrun a duckcycle. He was going to find him and talk to him personally, now that seeing Wildwing's persistence got answers. "It's getting dark and I can't let a sexy bit o' duck like the Dukester running around with the weirdoes out now canst I? Oh, no I can't!"
