Ghost Command – Two hours later . . .
“Hello? I’m home! Is anyone here?”
“They went out on a call, Jessica.”
“Oh. Hi, Belfry.”
“Hi Jessica. Was everything okay with Mr. Sherman?”
“I guess,” she sighed. “How long have they been gone?”
“They left right after you did.”
“Great. I get to sit here and sweat it out until they get back. Just what I wanted.” She plunked down onto Fred the recliner, putting her feet up on the ottoman. “Man this day just can’t get any better,” she muttered sarcasticallShe She leaned her head back against the chair and closed her eyes against the mounting migraine. “Stress sucks when you’re pregnant.” Fred lifted his ‘hands’ to gently massage Jessica’s temples. She sighed. “You’re an angel, Fred.”
Belfry was concerned about her now. She looked upset about something. He flew over to where she sat and perched on her tummy. “Jessica, are you sure everything’s all right?”
She could hear the worry in his voice, even without opening her eyes. She thought about lying to him for the briefest of moments, but was hit with an overwhelming surge of guilt. It’s tough to lie to innocents.
“Jessica, you’re scaring me! Please answer me! Are you all right?” the little bat pleaded.
“Not really, Belfry.”
“Wanna talk about it?” he asked in hushed tones.
“Not really, Belfry.”
“Wanna talk about what?”
Jessica slowly lifted her eyelids to find herself looking into the alarmed faces of her husband and his fellow Ghostbusters. They could be super-stealthy when they wanted to be. ‘Oh yeah. This just keeps getting better and better!’ “Hi Honey. Hi guys. Job went okay?”
“The job went fine, and don’t change the subject. What is it that you won’t talk about that has Belfry looking so worried?”
“What makes you think that?” she asked with feigned innocence. His expression soured. Okay, so now was not the time to play dumb. Oh well, there’s always displacement of blame. “You know it’s impolite to eavesdrop on people, Jake!”
“I wasn’t eaves--- . . . look don’t play games with me.” He knelt beside her and placed the back of his hand against her forehead. His next statements came out all in one breath. “You don’t have a fever, but you look a little flushed. Are you feeling okay? Is there something wrong with the babies? Did something happen?” He stopped to breathe, so she took that moment to answer.
“I’m flushed because it’s cold out, I’m fine, the babare are fine, and nothing happened . . . much.” She muttered the last word under her breath.
He frowned. ‘Oh she’s definitely hiding something.’ “What is that supposed to mean?”
“Whhhaaat!” she whined, rolling her eyes.
“What do you mean nothing much happened?”
“Oh.” She didn’t think he’d heard that. “I meant nothing happened.” He stared at her for a minute with a mixture of concern, irritation, and frustration. He sighed and gave her an anguished pout, then stood and turned his back to leave her alone.
“Fine. Don’t tell me. I’m just your concerned, loving husband.”
She cursed under her breath. “Wait! Okay, you win. I’ll spill it.”
‘Sucker,’ he thought with a smile. He quickly suppressed his grin as she rose and came around to look him in the face. “You’re sure your health is good?” He turned her around and wrapped his arms around her from behind to caress her swollen abdomen. He lowered his head to rest on her shoulder, and she rested her cheek against his.
“Positive. It’s totally unrelated to our pregnancy. It has to do with work.”
“Ah, I see. Well then there is no problem because you’re on maternity leave, and if Harvey thinks that you’re gonna do anything but rest for the next two months, he’ll be answering to me!”
She rolled her eyes and looked to Eddie and Tracey for support. They wisely turned and left the room. ‘Traitors,’ she thought. ‘Oh well, I’ll just convince him alone.’ She turned to face him and found hiowniowning down at her. ‘This is not going to be easy,’ she thought. “Jake. Sweetheart. Love of my life. Father of my children.” The frown held. “Stimulator of my loins.” That earned her a barely visible smile. “It really isn’t Harvey that’s the problem. It’s a legal matter that has to do with my contract. Come sit with me. It’s a bit complicated.”
They sat together on the sofa. “So, tell me what’s wrong.”
“You see, there was a huge supernatural disturbance in Manhattan during Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Some demon or something was trapped in a painting and tried to break free to take over the world. Your four pals from New Yotopptopped it. It was supposed to be really spectacular, and they did something with the Statue of Liberty. They haven’t been talking to any press about what happened, but we hear that every station in the Tri-State area has been trying to get the scoop. Our station wants to send someone too, since we do so many Ghostbuster stories, but they can’t because I’m on maternity leave.”
“Why don’t they just send someone else?”
“Two reasons. First, to blow my own horn, I’m the best. No one else at the station could ever get this story, but I know I could get them to talk to me.”
He rolled his eyes at her. “There’s that ego again.”
She smiled with a mixture of pride and seduction. “I got you to give me the exclusive, didn’t I?”
He smiled. He could never resist her when she gave him that look. “Point taken. And the second reason?”
“Your clause in my contract.”
“The one about you being the only one at WGPN to interview us? Has nothing to do with it.”
“Actually, it has everything to do with it. You see, the lawyer who drew up the contract revision stated that I was the only journalist at WGPN who could interview the Ghostbusters so long as I remain in the employ of the station. It doesn’t say which Ghostbusters; therefore, it means all Ghostbusters. I have to do this interview, or the station will lose the opportunity for a very big story, and WGPN could sue me for refusing to do something that I’m contractually obligated to do, maternity leave or not.”
“WHAT! Harvey plans to sue you?”
“No, of course not Dearest, but Harvey doesn’t own WGPN, now does he?”
“So if you don’t do this, you’ll get in trouble, and it’s my fault for insisting on the clause?”
“Of course it’s not your fault, Sweetheart.” She sighed impatiently. “It’s the attorney’s fault for being so vague in his wording. Regardless, I’ve decided to do it. It’s just an interview, and it’ll be much less hassle to just do it than to go to war with my employers.” She wasn’t surprised to find him scowling at her. “What now?”
“You know, you have a nasty little habit of using terms of endearment in a way that sounds like an insult.”
“What do you mean?” she asked with feigned innocence.
“I mean you call me Sweetheart or Dearest sometimes in a way that sounds like you mean Stupid or Dumbass.” She suppressed a smirk. He was right. She had been hoping he wouldn’t pick up on that.
“You’re just being paranoid! And you’re avoiding the issue because you know I’m right! Besides, they’ll pa twi twice my usual salary for the rest of my maternity leave, which will be lengthened an extra four months!”
“Sure, until they need you again. I don’t care how much they want to pay you; I don’t want you flying to Manhattan alone to do an interview, no matter how benign. You’re almost full-term!”
“I won’t be alone, Sweet . . . uh, Jake.”
“Uh huh.”
“See! Now you’ve got me all insecure about calling you Sweetheart. I should call you Jerk for that. Jerk Kong. That has a nice ring to it.” She leaned against him, giggling uncontrollably. He couldn’t help chuckling along with her.
“Very funny. And what do you mean you’re not going alone? Who’s going, Tom? He’s as bad as you are for finding trouble. And nowhere near as brave when he finds it.”
“Quit picking on Tom. And no, I didn’t mean him. He’ll come later if I nail the interview. You and Eddie are the ones going to New York City with me!”
“We are?” Eddie caught her last statement as he returned to the living room with a soda and a sandwich in hand.
“We sure are, Eddie! First class flight and five star hotel accommodations.”
“Really? Wow! When do we leave?” Jake scowled at his best friend, who took the hint and sheepishly returned to the kitchen with his lunch.
‘So much for the cavalry.’ She sighed audibly. “Look Jake. I know you don’t want this. I don’t really want to do it myself, but it’s easier to just do it and get back than to go through a whole messy legal battle with the station, especially while I’m recovering from giving birth to twins, possibly by C-section.”
“But . . .”
“And I’ve been feeling great lately.”
“Yeah well . . .”
“And we get a free trip, first class all the way, just in time for spring, the season of love.” She wiggled her eyebrows at him.
“I don’t care about . . .”
“So I should just do it, and you should come with me to make sure I don’t overdo things. We’ll be home in no time.” She gave him a cheesy grin not unlike the one Harvey gave her when he first mentioned needing a favor.
Jake waited a moment. “You done?”
“All finished.”
“Fine. Although I do understand everything you’re saying, and I respect your talents as a journalist, I still say there is no fucking way we’re going to New York while you’re almost nine months pregnant!”
