Ghost Command
Eddie was very cranky as he went to the door. The person outside was knocking insistently, despite his cries of “Be right there!” and “I said I’m coming already! Hold your horses!”
He didn’t expect to see her standing there when he finally opened the door. In truth, he didn’t expect to ever see her again. She’d been contact zero since she’d called Jake to tell him he was going to be an unwillingly absentee father. But there she was, staring at him uncertainly.
He eventually remembered to close his mouth, and he frowned darkly at her once he did. “What do you want? You’ve already stomped his heart into the ground and set it on fire. Here to piss on the ashes now?”
Her face contorted in misery, as her eyes welled with fresh tears. “I . . . I need to talk to him.”
“No. You want to talk to him. You need to leave him alone. You know, he loves you! More than I’ve ever seen him love any other woman, and now I don’t know if he’ll ever want to risk his heart again! That’s your fault! And I’m not letting you hurt him any more!” She turned around and leaned against the railing, too devastated to look at this man who had so recently been her friend. “Go home, Jessica! You’re not welcome here anymore!”
“That’s enough, Eddie!”
They both turned and saw Jake standing behind his best friend. He brushed him aside and held out his hand to her. She began to tremble, and she did not extend her hand to him. She looked into his eyes and saw not one trace of anger, only loving concern. Unable to hold it back any longer, she began to sob violently. His eyes got wide and horrified. He didn’t wait for her to take his hand. He grabbed her by the shoulders and steered her inside.
Eddie frowned at her as she entered. She could tell he thought she’d planned that. She shrugged out of Jake’s grasp and started back toward the door. “I . . . shouldn’t . . . have . . . come . . .” she sobbed brokenly. “So . . . sorry . . . .”
Jake ran over to her and grabbed her hand, forcing her to follow him. “Stop trying to leave! Yes, you should have come! I want you to sit and talk to me! Please! Stop struggling!” She didn’t want to upset him any more, so she finally remained still. Jake frowned at Eddie. “Look, I appreciate your protecting me and all, but she’s pregnant and you shouldn’t upset her like that. She could lose the baby!”
She listened to him defend her and she cried even harder, collapsing to the floor. The two men watched her hysterics and it suddenly occurred to them that they had no idea what could bring her there in such a state, but it must have been serious to cause her to be so distraught. They arrived at the same conclusion almost simultaneously, and Eddie felt the tears sting the backs of his eyes when he saw how Jake’s face fell at the prospect of the loss of his child, even if he wasn’t to be allowed a role in raising it.
“Jessica?” Jake asked, his voice catching in his throat. “Is . . . is our . . . um, is the baby okay?” he corrected himself.
She looup aup at him in confusion, but soon realized why he was asking. He thought she’d lost the baby, and he was trying to comfort her. Not once had he been hostile to her, despite how she’d treated him. It was like it didn’t matter to him as long as she let him help her. She’d looked for that kind of love all her life, and she couldn’t believe she’d almost thrown it away. She cried harder still, until she was coughing and hiccupping. Unfortunately, Jake and Eddie took this as proof that their worst fear was true.
“Oh no!” Eddie whispered. He dropped down onto the couch and buried his face in his hands. Jake sat down on the floor next to Jessica and wrapped her in his arms.
“I’m sorry, Jessie. I’m so sorry.” His voice cracked as he fought to hold back tears of mourning.
She knew what they thought, but she was having trouble speaking. “N-no! Th-that’s . . . not . . . it!” She rubbed her arm across her eyes, soaking her sleeve in tears. She took a few deep, shaky breaths to calm herself and then tried to say it again. “The baby’s fine. I didn’t lose it.”
Jake and Eddie’s sighs of relief did little to comfort their visitor. “Then what is it, Jess?”
She looked at him, her mouth open to answer, but she couldn’t begin to find the words. So she opted for showing him instead. She tangled her fingers in his hair and pulled his face down to hers, kissing him hungrily, as if she wouldn’t be able to breathe if the air wasn’t from his lungs.
Jake was possibly more surprised that she was kissing him than he had been when she’d burst into tears. But he wasn’t going to fight it! They kissed for what felt like an eternity. When they finally pulled away, Eddie was gone, and the haunted furnishings were all pretending to watch the Skelevision to give them a bit of privacy.
“Oh, Sweetheart I’ve been awful to you! I’m so sorry! I got the wrong idea and I pushed you away and I was so mean to you and I’m sorry!”
“It’s okay, Jess.”
“No! It’s not! And that’s not the beginning of it anyway! I started pushing you away before we were even together! I just thought that your job was too dangerous for me to settle down with you! But I don’t care anymore! I’d rather have you for a day than live the rest of my life apart from you when I could be with you!” She began to cry again. “I love you, Jake! I love you so much, it hurts!”
He stroked her cheek, wiping away her tears and kissed her eyelids. “I love you too, Jessica. I have for a long time now. And I understand your concern. You and your nephew have been in mortal danger because of my job on multiple occasions. You just wanted to do what was right for our child. But the truth is, tomorrow isn’t promised to any of us. Dad and Uncle Eddie have survived just fine, with families, as Ghostbusters for almost half a century. They were busting ghosts for over twenty years before Eddie and I were even born.”
“That’s right.” She could have kicked herself. There was living proof that Ghostbusting didn’t have to be a fatal profession. In truth, no Ghostbuster to date was ever killed. “And your job isn’t that much safer than mine. Just last month you did that exposé on organized crime. What if the mafia comes after you or me or even the baby?”
“I know. You’re right.” She lowered her head and closed her eyes in shame.
He smiled and lifted her chin to face him again. He kissed her gently to encourage her to open her eyes again. “I’m not trying to be right, Baby, I’m trying to put your mind at ease.”
She nodded weakly and looked into his eyes. “I just really screwed up. I promised that you would always have my trust if nothing else and I broke my word to you.”
“Hey, we both screwe. I. I should have been honest about how I felt instead of dropping subtle hints. I should have come right out and said that I love you, I want to marry you, and I’m willing to give up Ghostbusting for you.”
She stared at him as if he’d just grown a second head. “You want to marry me? And give up Ghostbusting?”
“Well, I wouldn’t say I want to give it up, but if it makes the difference between living with you or without you, I’ll live without my job. It was the thing that mattered most to me in this world, until now. I realized that when you wouldn’t talk to me. The thought of never busting another ghost was something I could live with, but never seeing your face again, that would kill me.”
She suddenly felt like someone had smacked her with a ‘realization 2 x 4’. “That’s the important thing you were willing to give up for me?”
“Yeah. What did you think I meant?”
She groaned. She’d really put her foot in it. “Futura.”
He frowned in total confusion. “Huh?”
“I thought you meant Futura.”
He looked at her like she was speaking a foreign language. “Futura? What . . . oh my God! You think I was dating Futura while I was seeing you, don’t you?!?”
“I did.”
He gaped at her then bust out laughing. “You must have thought I was a cheating asshole!” He laughed even harder. She didn’t see the humor in the situation at all, but his laughter was infectious. She was soon chuckling right along with him.
“It’s not funny!”
He laughed himself to a beet red complexion, but he slowly calmed himself back down. “I’m sorry. I have to disagree. And where did you get such a ridiculous notion?”
“Her behavior with you, and her reaction to our kissing.”
“What reaction?”
“She started to cry, made a flimsy excuse about needing to leave, and teleported out without saying good-bye or even making sure we got out first!”
It was his turn to look guilty. He’d always known she had a crush on him, but he thought it was just a passing fancy. Hero worship. He should have been more sensitive to her feelings. “Shit.”
Jessica caressed his cheek. “Don’t be hard on yourself. She’s over it. In fact, she came to me at home tonight and told me the truth. She also told me to get my butt over here. She’s cool now.”
He smiled and kissed her. “Then I guess I owe her a big thank you. But right now, I just want to be with the woman I love.”
“And I want to be with the father of my child.”
He hugged her tightly, as if he could never let go. They got up off the floor together and, without another word, went upstairs to his room. It would be their first night as a family. He smiled as he thought of the little jewelry box in his bureau that contained the proof that he’d loved her all along. And if she woke with another night terror, perhaps looking at the third finger of her left hand would soothe her right back to sleep.
