Chapter 267
Natsumon carried the Water Tribe boy back to the hotel and placed in him the box with the Avatar. He was leaving when he noticed the girl sitting alone in the corner crying softly. It was relatively empty so he took his chance. He strode over to her and extended his hand, “Come with me.”Macgau-Qiaolian’s eyes widened. She lifted the button her gently abuser had given her, “I’m spoken for. Officer Jianjun Zhao has claimed me.”
Natsumon grabbed her wrist and tugged her to her feet, “I know, which is why we must hurry. Don’t worry, I don’t have that intention towards you, I just think there is someone you should meet.”
“No, stop, don’t hurt me,” she begged as he shoved her out of the door.Natsumon clamped a hand over the girl’s mouth and lifted her. He knew whatever penalty the younger Zhao imposed would be stiff but he had to get her to the restaurant. It was a desperation tactic but he raised a flame to his hand, “Shut up and stop struggling or else.”Qiaolian began to panic; she’d been dragged from her home like that shortly after the Fire Nation invaded her city. Her mother was running errands and she was disobedient – she went outside. A soldier heard her reciting poetry in the garden and peeked over the wall. She ran back inside when she saw him climbing over it but he kicked open the door and pulled her back outside. He raped her beside the rhododendrons. Her mother found her after he’d left. She felt a hand on her face and heard the Firebender say, “Calm down, girl. I told you I do not have that intention” as he knocked on the back door of the restaurant.“It is Natsumon. I have a treat for Gau Ruk. Open the door.”The owner was unsure of what to do when he heard the knock and visitor announced himself. He didn’t like the way the Fire Nation man was sniffing around his daughter and attempting to sway his grandchild. His grandchild solved the dilemma by running past him and squealing, “Natsumon!” as he began undoing the lower latches on the door.Ming grabbed her son and pushed him behind her, “Get away from there. It’s dangerous. It could be a trick.”“It’s not trick, Miss Ming. It is I, Natsumon, and I did bring Gau Ruk a present,” he said patting the girls back.“Mama open the door! Open the door! Open the door!” the four year old yelled while jumping up and down behind his mother.“Please Miss Ming. Open the door. I do have something special for him and only a brief moment before I must go to my station,” Natsumon pled.Ming cracked the door, “What do you have for my child?”Natsumon pulled the girl into view, “His sister.”“What?” both women shrieked at the same time.Macgau-Qiaolian’s eyes landed on the little boy at the same time Ming’s landed on her. The resemblance was there. He looked just like the little brother she was never to acknowledge who’d been murdered by the Fire Nation.Gau Ruk stepped forward, “I don’t see a gift only a stinky girl. Where’s my present?”Natsumon kneeled before him, “She is your present, Gau Ruk. She’s your sister. The two of you have the same father.”The little boy frowned and Natsumon rephrased his statement, “You have the same Daddy. She’s also his child.”“My Daddy’s in heaven,” the little boy responded.“Mine is too,” the teenager replied. “So is most of my family. I don’t know where my mother is. She sacrificed everything to get me out of the city. We were to meet in her hometown.”Ming looked at her and asked quietly, “Your mother is not his wife?”She shook her head, “His wife is also in heaven. I would see her sometimes in the market with him and the rest of their family. He looks…he looks…”“So do you,” Ming whispered.Natsumon added, “That man’s features are strong. I was in Ba Sing Se when the uprising happened. I know of the governor’s decree.”Macgau-Qiaolian paled.“Do not worry. I didn’t bring you here for that purpose. I promise you, child, truly I mean you no harm,” Natsumon stated in what he hoped was a convincing tone.He placed his hand on Ming’s shoulder, “Miss Ming, I know this is abrupt but I can’t stay much longer. Do you mind spending a few hours with her until things calm down, I fear there is much you do not know.”He turned to Macgau-Qiaolian and placed a hand on her shoulder as well, “Young Miss, I know this is an imposition but please, can you tell her why you had to leave the city? She needs to know what is at stake.”He turned to Ming again, “Miss Ming, I do not wish to pressure you or frighten you, I have honorable intentions and wish only the best for you and both of these children. I must be going. I’ll come back for you when they give the all clear.”Ming closed and locked the door as Natsumon headed for his post. She and the younger girl stared at each other unsure of what to say. Gau Ruk stepped closer to the newcomer and tugged slightly on her leg, “Do we really have the same Daddy?”Macgau-Qiaolian nodded, “Our father was a brave man. He died fighting for what he believed in.”“This nose, these cheeks and these lips are his,” she said touching both of their faces. She pulled back her hair, “So are these big ears.”“Mama look!” Gau Ruk exclaimed pointing as she wiggled her ears. “I want to know how to do that!”For the first time since leaving home Macgau-Qiaolian smiled. She had always wanted to meet her siblings but her father had only shown her brothers. It was from a distance and only to prevent incest if they ever came in contact. She lowered herself to her little brother’s height, “I can teach you. Father taught me; that is if your mother will let me?”Ming nodded. She’d seen the girl sitting alone in the hotel but never paid any attention to her face. She didn’t know much about her son’s father and several of the things she’d told him had been made up. It would be nice for Gau Ruk to learn more about him but first she needed to know why the normally bold and cocky Natsumon had been so nervous.
Kain: It’s good to hear from you again. Congratulations on your new job! May your paycheck be fat, hours be steady, your boss be fair, your coworkers tolerable and customers sane. Don’t ever feel like you have to apologize for not leaving a review. They are so very loved and treasured but I’m not one of those greedy self-entitled writers who wants to makes people feel obligated to comment. Fanfiction is for fun not payment.
It does suck to be Sokka and you are so very right, Katara is going to wreck someone over him ***muahahaha*** but I’m still writing my way to there… Ah yes, the lovable, hateable people of the Fire Nation. You make me so happy when you say things like that because they aren’t predictable and one dimensional.
