Hello world and my wonderful readers! I have been sick with the stomach flu for almost a week, but I did manage to publish my Walking Dead story, Forever Rising Phoenix ! Please be sure to check it and leave a review! Also, SySaiyan has completed another piece of fanart! It's gorgeous! The link is posted below :) I'm sorry if this chapter seems short or predictable, but like I said, Duncan has something up his sleeve at the end ;) That and I think a lot of us saw this coming as well ;)
Thanks for the reviews, follows, and favorites! :D I can not believe that in almost three months I have 14,437 views, 217 reviews, 28 follows, and 24 favorites! HOLY COW! It gives me hope that the original version of the story will be well received also :). I haven't been going through the easiest of times lately, these reviews have given me such a warm happiness and a boost for my recently deflated confidence/self esteem. The more reviews I get, the quicker I update, but you all know I'd update regardless! I'm overjoyed and inspired to write! If anybody has any suggestions, feel free to send me a private message, I'd love to hear them! Thanks to SkorpionQueen012, Knute, PabloPenguin, Soldier Courtney, GrapeSodaBanBabies, BlueBerryIceQueen, Duncanschick, SilverSun09, and the guest reviewers whose names I don't know, I know I can always count on your ideas and reviews!
I finally hit over 200 reviews! WOO-HOO! Now, I really want to hit 300 and more reviews! I've been advertising the story on Instagram, I hope it works! I did not draw the cover image, I found that on Instagram also, but if any and all artists want to do some fan art, message me!

Chapter Twenty Seven: For The Future…
Joan and Stanley's House, Bel Air, 11:30 pm
"Duncan, I'm glad to see you but-AHH!" Joan screamed when she opened the door, her demeanor going from calm yet tired to shocked and frightened when she saw Duncan and Courtney.
"Hi, Mom." Duncan sheepishly said. Packing their clothes, Bowser, Oreo, and going over everything with the police took almost an hour before they finally got to his mom's. It was already going to be hard enough to explain everything, but he didn't know that's how she'd react over his face. It's going to get worse when she hears the story.
"Don't "Hi, Mom" me. You call asking to stay the night and not telling why, acting all suspicious. Now, you show up and both look like you got hit by a semi-truck! What the hell happened?"
Courtney was utterly embarrassed. Why didn't we think to change our clothes before we got here, or at least put some makeup on to cover the bruises? She bowed her head a little, trying to avoid it all. The last thing she wanted was for Joan to have a ruined image of her, but there was no way of preventing that. If Duncan was going to say what happened, he had to reveal about Courtney working at The Tainted Kitty. Then again, if either one of them wanted this relationship to go any further, honesty was always the best policy.
"I'm not going to The Governor's Ball, it doesn't matter how I look. Can we come in or are we going spend Christmas morning on the front porch? I'll explain everything, I promise." He was getting annoyed, but he knew better to not expect an inquisition from her, or else she would have reverted back to her old Cruella ways.
Joan heavily sighed. "Fine, come in, come in." She stepped aside and the two lovebirds walked right inside with their pets. The entire house was decorated extravagantly with shades of green, red, white, silver, and gold. Cellophane and silk ribbons tied around both staircase railings, the walls outlined in fiber optic lights that changed color, four huge snow frosted Christmas trees, one in the foyer, family room, living room, and against the wraparound staircase wall, gorgeously trimmed to perfection. Duncan didn't even notice, but Courtney thought it was fabulous. It brought her to a peaceful mood, the first she had felt in hours. It all felt a little nostalgic, like how Christmas was before her dad died.
Stanley was already sitting in the living room on the black leather couch, waiting for their arrival. "Hello Duncan, Courtney." He addressed them politely.
"Hello, Stanley." Courtney became very shy and uncomfortable, this all felt like her and Duncan were teenagers in trouble about to be lectured by their parents. If only that was it, although, there would surely be some lecturing…
"Hey Stan, sorry to wake you up. Mom, can you sit down, please?" Joan sat next to her husband while Courtney and Duncan sat down on the love seat across from them. Despite trying to play it cool, apprehension was creeping up on Duncan. His leg started bouncing and he was twiddling his thumbs, he wasn't sure how his mother would react. It was scary because things between them were finally going back to good, this could ruin everything. Courtney placed her hand on his thigh and rubbed it gently. He looked into her eyes, they looked so reassuring and kind.
"It'll be ok, honey pie. I promise."
Courtney was so incredible, and he couldn't believe that she was his. From time to time, Duncan felt like he'd wake up at any moment and it would be just that, a dream. Except it was far from it, and he couldn't wait for them to build a future together. He smiled, trying to make it comforting, but they were both aware of the anxious vibe.
"I know it will be." He grabbed her hand and kissed the back of her palm, making her smile. Duncan placed her hand back on his thigh whilst still holding it, as Joan sat down.
"So, Duncan. What is it that you have to tell us that couldn't wait until tomorrow?"
Duncan and Courtney looked at each other, there really was no going back now. He turned to Joan and Stan, taking a deep breath. He decided to start it out the same way he started out telling Courtney about the heist back when they had their first date. "Well, it all started when…"
Fifteen Minutes Later…
"OWW-WAH!"
It all went down so quickly he only heard the sound after it actually happened but felt the sting right away. His mother had really slapped him across the face, something she hadn't done since he was sixteen years old. Stanley and Courtney both went wide eyed and she had actually gasped, it was completely unexpected. Joan stood up, she was fuming and breathing heavily.
"Duncan Elliot Harrister, what the hell is wrong with you?! Why would you go out and do a outrageous stunt like that?!"
Duncan rubbed the side of his face. "Mo-om, that hurt like fucking hell! I told you, they recruited me!"
"I don't care if they recruited you or not! You put your life on the line, you could have been killed! Why would you do something so selfish? You got shot!"
He stood up and stared down at her, not caring how intimidating it was. "So I could get out of jail finally and start a new life! I was going to be there for another two years, this was a sure way out! It would be a chance for me to redeem myself! I'm not the same asshole that was thrown in there two years ago! You and I both know that. I wouldn't have even gotten shot in the first place if that psychopath hadn't have tried to deposit the bills! I'm not being selfish, they offered me a permanent position but I turned it down because I realized that wasn't who I wanted to be anymore! Chasing down criminals and putting my life on the line!"
Joan seemed like she was about to hyperventilate, her pupils were dilated and she was having a hard time breathing. "Duncan, look at what you're doing to me! I bet you didn't think of that, what would happen to me or Courtney if you got killed. All you do is think about yourself, you egocentric brat!" She started swatting at him, with Duncan lifting his arms up to prevent the hits.
"Mom, cut it out already! Take a fucking Ativan!"
"Joan, please! Calm down!" Stanley got up and held her back.
This whole sight was nothing short of devastating for Courtney to see, but even she had to admit that she felt like doing exactly what Joan did when she found out about the news. Courtney watched as Joan struggled out of Stan's grip. Unfortunately, it made her also think of her second encounter with Duncan, and that the opposite sex has to be restrained from strangling him at times.
"You think that's the solution to all of life's problems? To take a tranquilizer?!"
"No, but it's always worked for you!"
"Do you have any idea what would happen to me if anything happened to you?! I couldn't go on, Duncan. I COULDN'T! You are my baby, my world would be dead without you in it!"
She finally broke out of his grip and landed in Duncan's arms, securing him in a firm embrace, sobbing uncontrollably and further shaking. Duncan knew she was telling the truth, but there was something deeper, that sadly, everybody in the room knew the real reason. Duncan was the last thing left of his father, Nathan. If anything happened to him, she'd lose the last connection she had to the love of her life, as well as her son. Stanley really was a strong man to stay with a woman that couldn't give herself one hundred percent to him. Her problems had been deeper than what she had let on, maybe this was some of the cause for their twelve year rift. Duncan really had put her through hell and back, despite her lack of showing it. He heavily sighed and hugged her, rubbing circles into her back.
"Shh, Mom. It's ok. I'm here, I'm not going anywhere. Everything is fine. I'm safe now, I promise you that. You never have to worry about me again."
She sniffled. "I know, and I know you're strong, but I can't help but worry. Even when you were locked up, I still worried. It's mother's instinct. And Courtney," Joan turned to her, with a sympathetic gaze. "I don't judge you for your past or anything that you had to do to help yourself. I only see you as the beautiful girl, inside and out, that made my son a better man, and I could never dislike anybody that made him so happy."
Courtney didn't really know what to say, it was so caring. She didn't doubt that Duncan and his mother used to have a rocky relationship, but she could tell that Joan was a good person. Besides, Duncan wasn't the easiest person to deal with, but he was worth every aggravation.
"Thank you, so much. I really didn't want you to think less of me. I was stuck in my pain, similar to Duncan. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't too happy with your son when he spilled the beans about this whole operation, but he needs us there to tell him when he's being an idiot, don't you think?"
Everybody had a brief laugh over that, thankful that something eased the tension a little bit.
"Yes, yes, I do. Duncan, you have to promise us you will never do anything like that for a second time, ok?"
Duncan hugged his mother tightly before looking her in the eye. "I promise you all, I will not do anything like that, I am completely done. No more crimes or heists. The only thing I care about is planning out the next career move since I turned down the FBI. Like I said, I want to go back to school, maybe become some kind of a lawyer. Maybe I'll follow in your footsteps and become a plastic surgeon, Stanley."
He tried to laugh, but it upset him seeing Joan so distraught, but Duncan wasn't a lost cause. Suddenly, an idea came to him. Stanley cleared his throat as both Joan and Duncan sat back down.
"Duncan, I don't ever, want to see your mother have a reaction like this again. I love her very much and care about you as well, like the son I always wanted . I know you've turned down my previous offer, but here's a new one: Tomorrow morning, I am going to write you a check for $80 million, for you to do with what you want. Invest, go back to school, start a business, whatever you please. I won't take no for an answer. If you rip it up, I'll just keep writing out the checks. I'll leave you two to think about how you want to spend this lucrative inheritance, but I'm not changing my mind. We've all had an overly excited evening, I think we should all go to sleep so we can have a marvelous Christmas morning. Good night, everybody. Joan, shall we?"
He raised an eyebrow, to which Joan took the hint.
"Yes, good night, you two. Please take the offer this time, Duncan, or we'll have to kill you." Joan warily laughed as they left the room, leaving Duncan and Courtney sitting on the love seat, totally stunned and not knowing what to say…
Two Hours Later…
After Joan and Stanley went to bed, Duncan and Courtney retired to the family room. They put on National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and cozied up on the white leather sofa across a blazing fire, enjoying peppermint hot chocolate with mini marshmallows. Duncan seemed more into the movie than Courtney was, she couldn't help but be distracted, causing Duncan to notice. He nudged her gently. "Babe, you ok?"
"Huh?" She looked up at him. "Yeah, I'm fine. Let's just watch the movie." She turned her attention back to the antics of Clark Griswald, but Duncan knew something was bugging her.
He lifted her chin so they were looking at each other. "Court, don't lie to me. I know there's something on your mind, so spill."
Courtney sighed heavily, not really wanting to delve into this, but feeling like she had to. "Tonight, when I overheard Alejandro telling Chris that you were dead, I lost it and broke down. A part of me knew you weren't really dead, but what if I was wrong?" She cried a little and wrapped her arms tighter around Duncan's waist and buried his head into his stomach, but it wasn't too far off from his crotch.
"Awww, doll face, don't cry." He positioned her into his lap and wiped her tears away. "I promise you, again, that I am not going anywhere, and that I'm always here for you. When Alejandro pointed that gun at you, my heart stopped, I went into protective mode. All I could think of was beating the crap out of him to save your life." Duncan kissed her deeply and embraced her, not letting go for a couple minutes. He didn't want to further scare her, but a part of him was kind of worried that he wouldn't make it, even though he was tough as nails, Alejandro was a hard opponent to beat, but he got the upper hand. Duncan was glad that he saved his love, his friends, and himself.
Courtney stopped crying and put her hands on his face. Everything about him was so perfect to her, in every aspect, and he was all hers. "You know, I used to think that crying was for the weak. I can honestly say that since getting involved with you, I've cried more than I have in a long time."
He pushed a few strands of hair out of her face and kissed her nose. "You've probably been holding it in for a long time, hun. Except, I don't want to be the one that make you so sad. I think I know something that will cheer you up." Duncan scooted her off of him and walked out of the room, earning him a quizzical look from Courtney. "It's a surprise, I'll be right back."
All she could do was sit there and watch the movie, barely laughing over Randy Quaid yelling "Shitter's full!" as "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer was played on the tuba.
"Ha, that's my favorite part." Duncan said, holding a shimmering purple gift bag in front of Courtney's face. She took it, but not before laughing at him.
"It would be. Is this for me?"
"No, it's for my mom. I wanted you to look at it. Pfft, yes, it's for you! Open it up, I got it for you last week. It's one of many Christmas presents." He sat on the table and watched her.
"Ok, but I still think you're spoiling me, Duncan." She pulled a silver box out of the bag. Dior it said on the outside.
"I could never get tired of spoiling you, Princess."
She opened the box and gasped at what she saw. Inside was a beautiful skull and crossbones ring. The skull head was made of mother of pearl while the crossbones were gold with white diamonds at the ends. The skull had on a gold headdress encrusted with emeralds, sapphires, and pink diamonds, as well as pink diamonds for the skull's eyes and earrings. It was one of the most beautifully striking pieces of jewelry that she had ever seen.
Courtney hadn't even noticed that Duncan turned off the movie. She felt him grab her hand and looked at him, seeing that he was on one knee, holding her hand in both of his, making Courtney's heart skip a beat. Instead of his signature smirk, Duncan had a huge smile on his face.
"Courtney Scarlett McKay, will you marry me?"
