I have some explaining to do and apologies to make. I am really very very sorry this took forever and a year. My friend’s mom just died and I wanted to make sure he was okay before concentrating on anything else. I am terribly sorry that I made you wait so long, but I’m not actually sure if the next chapter will be out any faster. I do hope you like the chapter though.
Family Ties
Chapter 3- Moving
The first two days had been fairly awkward for Zero. He was constantly in the way whenever he tried to help. Blues and Tranquility had their cooking thing down pat and his helping only would up disturbing their flow. Zero avoided Hades, or more specifically being alone with Hades. He didn’t know why the other clone set him on edge but he did. Hades hadn’t even done anything to him, mostly he ignored Zero’s existence but Zero was hesitant to see how far that patience played out so he avoided being in Hades’ way as much as possible. If Hades appreciated, or hell if he even noticed the effort, he didn’t show it. And Sparkles was always out. As a flyer he was faster and safer (with the possible exception of Tranquility) when it came to checking out new places and the safest routes. And he would bother Blake, who seemed to do little besides nap but Sara and Rachel still creeped him out. Who knew what they would do if he upset Blake.
The only human he was really comfortable around was Anita and that was because she made him think of Maria. But Anita was always busy, usually following Bianca around and making sure that everything that needed to get done got done. Not that they didn’t listen to Momma B (as everyone else called her) but they tended to listen faster when they knew Anita was going to start in on them if they didn’t. So Zero spent a lot of time with Blake. Just… not bothering him so Sara and Rachel had no reason to get extra creepy on him.
Like today. He was already groggy and undercharged by his rude awakening from Anita. Not to mention that Touzoku was in a bad mood as well. And being in a bad mood made him even scarier than normal. Even Dria refused to try to talk to him. And Dria talked to everyone. Only Hades and Alicia had mastered the miracle of getting her to shut up.
Without any other options, or rather without being willing to exploit his other options, Zero headed over to Sara and Rachel’s corner. There were no obvious boundries or borderlines, but it had become obvious that everyone had their space. It was limited, of course varying mostly by who demonstrated a great need for it and how scary they were. The two often coincided. For example, Hades (and therefore Dria) got a great deal of space, though it was often invaded because Dria was a sociable creature.
The twins, as they were often referred to as, didn’t get much space (as they were creepy at times but not particularly scary) but what they did have was clearly separate from everyone else. It was a great place to go when Zero wanted somewhere relatively quiet. Unsurprisingly, Sara was awake. Rachel, on the other hand, was still sleeping peacefully, curled against Blake, soaking in as much heat as she could. From Blake’s other side, Sara’s hand gently brushed hair off her twin’s face, petting Blake as well.
Quietly Zero sat next to her. “Want some company?”
“No, but you do.” She told him flatly. Zero wasn’t sure if he appreciated the honesty or hated it.
“Actually I wanted a nap.” He told her snidely. Apparently, today he was closer to hating it. He usually had more patience. Usually.
Rachel stirred, shifting in her sleep. Sara stopped, though it was obvious her full attention was on her twin. “Shush then, and sleep.” She replied belatedly.
“Why is she so restless anyway?”
“Quiet before you wake her.” Blake’s rough growling voice demanding.
“Too late.” That was Rachel. “Why is everyone awake so early anyway?”
“Because it’s you who sleeps too late.”
“I recall you saying that you came here to nap.” Sara said, her voice deadpan.
Zero turned away. “Whatever.” Blake and Rachel laughed at him.
“What has you perturbed enough to run to us anyway?” Blake asked.
“Nothing.” The disbelief, though unspoken was palpable. “Anita has a busy day. She had to get up early.”
Blake discreetly, but purposely, wrapped his tail around Zero’s wrist. It was more comforting than any words from the panther clone could have been. It gave Zero the security to mention the other thing that got him all flustered and frustrated. “And why is Touzoku in such a bad mood anyway? He nearly bit my head off for existing closer than a 100 foot radius from him.”
Rachel was the one to answer him this time. “Obviously she decided that she wanted a real man.” The blonde twin couldn’t help but snicker lightly at the implications, despite the effect it had on Touzoku. Zero didn’t find it very funny, but then he was the one who nearly suffered the consequences of Touzoku’s anger.
“I don’t get it. Why would that make him so angry?” he asked. If there was one thing any Frenzy clones (actually all the cassetticon and Soundwave clones if he thought about it), simply couldn’t stand it was not knowing or understanding the emotional responses of those they live with. Not knowing why someone was slagged off could lead to saying something wrong, resulting in either extreme pain or deactivation. Zero liked living. He liked it a lot actually.
“NO matter what they say, deep down people are drawn to those who are similar with them. For example, back before the US was essentially destroyed when there were schools, the black kids would sit with the other black kids at the lunch table, just as all the Asian, Spanish, and white kids did. Everyone grouped with people who were like themselves, even if it was just superficially. Well, even though Blues is Damien’s clone, he only likes women and Blues doesn’t have that type of programming anyway. Momma B has never given in to Tranquility’s advances and despite the fact that Touzoku is a pleasure model, both she and Lici miss contact with human males. So every once in a while, they spend the night with Damien. Whenever it happens, Tranquility and Touzoku become… easily irritated.” Sara explained logically.
“She means moody.” Rachel teased, poking her twin’s side.
“So…” Zero started nervously. It was scary to even think about the question he was about to ask. “What about Hades? Does stuff like that happen to him too?” If so… Zero wasn’t sure there was enough room on the planet to make him feel a safe distance away. He’d have to not just be good, but on his best behavior to avoid that.
“Dria is the one who is owned, between the two of them.” Blake told him. Like that answered everything, instead of serving to confuse Zero further.
“Okay… meaning?”
“He told her she wasn’t allowed to seek that sort of stimulation from anyone else. And like the love-struck pet she is, she obeyed. Touzoku’s quite jealous. He can’t get such a hold on Lici.” Rachel clarified.
Zero had to laugh at that. Even from the little bit he had seen, he could imagine anyone trying that on Alicia. That would get Touzoku kicked out of her bed entirely with a cool calmness few could emulate.
“Besides, Hades was my first. I trust him more than any human male anyway.” Dria smiled gently, her voice surprisingly serious.
Zero nearly flinched. When had she come over and how much had she heard? Mentally Zero tried to calm himself. The fact that Blake seemed so unconcerned went a long way in helping him calm himself. “Why are you over here anyway?” It was like sacrilege. No one, well besides Zero, really disturbed Sara, Rachel, and Blake. After a few more minutes of talking, he would have settled down to nap beside Blake, instinctively trusting the Ravage clone to wake him should danger occur. Even though the twins weren’t his favorite people, having Blake around made him feel safe for some crazy reason.
“Breakfast.” Dria grinned. She was always smiling. Zero wasn’t sure if he liked it or not. “Blues convinced Momma to let him treat us today, since we’ve got such a huge day ahead of us. Fruit cocktail, your choice of candy- I claim some Now and Laters btw, and protein bars. I don’t know about you guys, but I was kinda getting tired of porn-n-beans.” It did sound like a vertible feast, since food options were so limited nowadays. “The country’s destroyed and the main food that survives is canned goods and candy. Willy Wonka would be ecstatic.” Zero found himself idly agreeing.
When it came to mealtimes, there was one rule that was set in stone. Unless you were on duty or on a mission, you ate with everyone else. Momma B wouldn’t allow anyone to start unless everyone was present. Despite the rule, it was incredibly rare for everyone to be there. There was always someone on duty and Sparkles was away on missions more than not. Today everyone was there. Including Sparkles, who was off on a mission last thing Zero knew.
Zero was quick to grab the seat next to Anita, despite the fact that it put him in arm’s reach of the two clones he was most afraid of. As Anita’s best friend, Dria sat on her other side, even as she remained plastered to Hades’ side. And Alicia sat next to Damien, which made Touzoko glue himself to her other side, reaching an arm possessively around her waist. Of course that other side was right next to Zero. What he wouldn’t give to be on the other side of the circle, safely between Blake and Blues. Why couldn’t Anita have sat there?
Sensing his nervousness, Dria forked over one of her Now and Laters. “Ever had one?” He hadn’t. Nana hadn’t really liked candy, so he never really had any unless Maria sneaked him some. “Try it. Even Hades likes it though he won’t admit it.” The Megatron clone glared lightly at her, but with a slight nod he did give Zero permission to try it. Zero took it.
The strong flavor of artificial cherry slapped his sensors hard. “Mmmmm…” He could see why they liked it, as his mouth filled with oral lubricant, carrying the flavor throughout his mouth and down his throat.
“Yeah, I know.” Dria agreed with a snicker.
“Hey!” Anita interrupted. “Don’t give him too many of those. Candy-gasms are for special occasions.”
“But they’re so good!” Dria joked as Zero took the opportunity to take some of Anita’s Now and Laters.
“Thief!” Anita cried out in mock anguish as she caught him. Well, atleast he wasn’t scared anymore, he thought as Anita wrestled him for the candy. All too soon, Bianca stopped them. Or rather, Hades did, in a very indirect way. The Megatron clone had dragged Dria off to start packing. Bianca, picking her cues from the rather organized clone, then stepped up and decided it was time for everyone to begin packing.
It took a little over an hour and a half, to get everyone to decide what they were taking and getting it all into a portable form. The clones, having few of their own belongings, mostly helped the humans pack their own things. Quite a bit of it would have to be left behind. Many of the books Sara and Rachel had collected, remained simply because of the lack of room. Most of the scavenged furniture that had survived stayed as well. It took a while to figure out the best way to transport the food and after a half hour debate, it was decided that the vacuum could remain as well.
“Remember everybody! After this, we probably won’t settle down again for a really long time.” Bianca had entrusted Anita to make this announcement. Or rather, Anita had insisted on it. Why, Zero wasn’t quite sure, but he had realized Bianca had been avoiding this until the very last moment. “We’ve been here a long time, so much so that we think of it as home now, but sometimes, leaving home is for the best.” Bianca, and surprisingly Dria, flinched at those words. “But I do promise that we will have a home again so please, bear with me.”
Here, Bianca took over again, resting her hand on Anita’s shoulder. “I want to cover atleast 8 to 10 miles today. 15 would be better, but I’m not sure we’re all up for that.” Though she didn’t flinch, Dria withdrew at those words. Hades nudged her side, but it had little effect. “We ready?”
A vague chorus of agreement was her response. “Are we ready?” She asked again, trying to get them more in the spirit of things. Or to atleast not make this as bad as it could be. This time the response was louder, slightly more hopeful than before. “Lead on Sparkles.”
They started walking not particularly fast, but at a steady pace that would be easily kept for the next several hours. Sparkles lead on in the air, keeping his optics out and guiding them on the safest path. Zero kept his processors mostly clear, idly listening to the chatter between Anita and Dria and Anita and Bianca. And listening to Tyquien and Dria tease each other, but that was impossible not to listen to- they were so loud. Two hours later, Dria stopped talking, and Anita also quited down, but Zero cued that to whatever excitement there had been to start off with fading.
It wasn’t until another hour that Zero noticed it. Hades had slowed down and was frowning at his human. Touzoku as well, practically hovering over Alicia as she began to pant slightly. Four hours in, the group took a break. Partly for food and rest, but mostly to check to see what was wrong with the two sisters, both of whom refused to sit.
“I’m fine.” Dria gasped out as Anita, Tyquien, and Hades fussed over her. As much as Hades would fuss anyway. “We have slight asthma and unlike you guys are really used to any sort of physical activity.” Her words became clearer as she simply stood and got her breath. “Before Yellowstone I was over 200 pounds and I’m barely 5’5, does that sound any sort of physically fit to you? I have blisters and was out of breath but I’m fine. If I sit down, I’ll probably never get back up.” She told them, her voice almost spiteful. It was the most bitter Zero had ever seen her- in fact, he hadn’t even thought it was possible.
Alicia told them tantamount to the same thing. She was slightly fitter than her sister, but that didn’t mean she was in enough shape to walk that far unaffected. The march continued quickly after, and they didn’t stop again until it was time to camp for the night. The humans, all of them, practically collapsed when they were told they were done for the day.
“How are you?” Anita had asked Dria. Dria relaxed into their shared tent, where she had asked Hades to rub her feet.
“I’ll be aright. My legs are a little sore but they’re fine.”
Zero, hesitantly, followed the older clone’s lead and began to rub down Anita’s feet after he rid her of her boots. Anita hiss as he hit a sore spot. “Should I stop?” he asked, afraid to hurt her.
“No… keep going.”
Dria laughed at her blissful expression, until it was interrupted with a loud moan and blissful expression of her own. “Hades… I’m sorry I failed you today.”
“Shush. Go to sleep.” He ordered, disappointed and angry, but unwilling to take it out on the human. Dria reached down and pulled him up to look into his optics.
“It won’t happen again, but I want to make it up to you.” She said, kissing his lips.
“Well, don’t mind me.” Anita declared, turning away from them.
“We won’t.” Hades told her, before allowing Dria to ‘make it up to him.’
Anita huffed, mumbling about how she should have stayed with Tyquien instead. Zero simply watched on, fascinated. He had never actually seen sex before be it between to humans or a human and a clone. How all that fit in a human body comfortably amazed him. Idly, Zero found himself wondering if the entire march was going to be like today.
