Less than five minutes after Futura’s arrival, the phone rang. Janine answered it; ready to tell whomever it was that they were closed until further notice. Instead, she listened quietly for a moment, and then held out the phone to Eddie. “It’s some woman for you, Eddie. She says her name is Madame Y.”
Eddie looked surprised. “How did she know we were here?” he muttered. Futura chuckled.
“The same way I did, naturally.”
“Of course. Telepathy,” he deduced.
“Nah,” she responded. “I called your father.”
Eddie pulled a face at Futura, who smiled broadly. He took the receiver from Janine and spoke to their gypsy friend. “Hi Madame. What’s up?”
“Hello Eddie. I am sorry that I am not calling in better times,” she said in her thick Russian drawl. “I am seeing an image of Jessic my my crystal ball. She is missing, yes?”
“Yes.”
“She is in a warehouse near the East River. The name is unclear, but it begins with a ‘B’. Yes, ‘B-something Incorporated.”
“Wow, Madame! That’s great news. You’re amazing!”
“No, I am merely a messenger. Jessica is the one who is amazing. She is projecting her thoughts to me, just as I taught her. She told me where she was, that those who took her are taking care of her, and that she and the little ones are unharmed. But I can sense that she is very frightened. Please let me know what happens. I will worry until I know she is returned to us.”
“We’ll call you as soon as she’s safe, Madame. And Madame? Thanks.”
“Of course, Eddie. Jessica is family to me as well. I will pray for her safe return.” They both hung up. “ . . . And for your own,” she added sadly.
Eddie relayed the information to the others. Everyone’s heart was gladdened ten-fold when Jake started beaming with pride at his wife’s resourcefulness.
With the confirmation of Jessica’s general location, the six Ghostbusters, Alice, and Janine set out for the waterfront in Ecto-1 and Janine’s car as soon as they’d finished the modifications on their equipment. Frump agreed to meet them there with several squad cars, and he promised to be accompanied by a fire truck and an ambulance. Each of the Ghostbusters had a PKE meter and a roll of duct tape along with their usual equipment. Spell casting requires the speaking aloud of magical words. The duct tape was to shut the Cthulhu cultists up if necessary.
They split up to cover more ground. Eddie and Ray took Alice to search inland. Peter and Winston searched the north side of the river together with Futura and Janine, who sported her jumpsuit and proton pack. Janine had suggested using her own powers, but Egon said he would still prefer that remained a secret, and there would be too many eyewitnesses for his liking.
That leftn ann and Jake. They searched the southern warehouses, each with a PKE meter in hand.
The search continued for two hours. Eventually, the two blond Ghostbusters met a homeless drifter.
“Hey, Ghostbusters. Got any spare change.” Jake ghim him a couple dollars, then stared at the man for a moment. The tramp turned to leave, but Jake grabbed his arm.
“Excuse me, Mister . . . I didn’t catch your name.”
He sneered distrustfully and jerked his arm from Jake’s grip. “I didn’t throw it.”
Jake extracted a fifty-dollar bill from his wallet, holding it tantalizingly before the man who immediately shed his irritation. “Jimmy. Jimmy Hollander.” He reached for the cash, but Jake was much taller and held it just out of his reach.
“Mr. Hollander, have you seen anything unusual around here lately?” he asked.
“Nah.” He reached for the money again, but failed to even get close. Jake was too quick and too tall. ‘Shit! Big stupid asshole!’ He decided he’d best tell them something. “Oh yeah! There was this weird chanting about a week ago.”
Egon looked up from his meter. “Chanting you say? What were they chanting?”
“Kachupi fatassi or some such,” he voiced blearily. “Kept saying it over and over. It was really creepy.”
“Do you remember where you were?”
“One of the warehouses on this pier, but I was pretty drunk. I don’t know which one.”
“Could you answer one more question Mr. Hollander?” Egon asked. “Could the chanting you heard have been ‘Cthulhu fhtagn’?”
“That’s it!”
Jake gave him the fifty dollars, and thanked him heartily. Egon called everyone to where they were by walkie-talkie. Once they were all assembled, Futura used her telepathic abilities to locate Jessica. “She’s in the last warehouse on the left. Buxington & Sons Shipping, Inc. Madame was right. She’s scared to death, but I can’t tell if she’s still unhurt. There’s some sort of psychic wall.”
