Chapter 20: Will Did.
(Go City docks - August 5th, 2008)
Dr. Betty Director watched as the heavily modified motorcycle slowly weaved it's way through the debris. Once clear of the destruction, it picked up speed at a rate that would be unbelievable to most people. Not her. She was the one who issued the waiver, good anywhere in the world, allowing it's owner to operate it at any speed, including it's top of close to 500 mph. Within seconds, she could barely see the rider's blond hair, or the pink spot beside it, as the world's foremost hero rode away.
Even after he passed from her sight, she continued to stare off in the distance. She never had a qualm about the waiver, since she knew it was the man's magically enhanced strength and agility that made him the only one capable of operating it at such a speed. Capable. Super power. Her thoughts brought her in a circle as her attention returned to the destruction surrounding her.
Questions filled her mind as she heard another GJ VTOL jet coming in to land, next to the one which brought her here. Why hadn't Team Go been capable of defeating their long time foe? Their super powers made them more than a match for the villain's robotic avian menagerie. Something they proved many times in the past. Why not this time? What had changed?
They were questions she knew she might never get an answer to. She looked over at the ambulances parked next to the coroner's vans. The only ones who knew, were in no condition to tell her. She saw the only surviving member of Team Go being loaded into one of them by a pair of GJ doctors. The makeshift tourniquet, applied by Ron Stoppable, on what was left of his leg stood out against the purple of his uniform.
The doctors already gave her their preliminary prognosis. Mego would probably lose the leg. He might also never regain consciousness again. Until they got him to the hospital, and performed more tests, they couldn't give her any more than that.
Her attention went to the other ambulance. It was already starting to pull away. Aviarius was unlikely to survive his injuries. His skull was shattered, most of the bones in his body broken. Internal organs damaged, some beyond any hope of repair. She didn't blame Stoppable one bit for what he did to the villain. Had it been her coming onto the scene, and finding what he did, Aviarius would already be in one of the coroner's vans.
A familiar voice came from behind her.
“Reporting, as ordered, Commander.”
Will Du helped Prof. Assay down the plane's entry ramp as he spoke. His eyes took in the results of the battle. He was of very mixed feelings. None of which showed on his face. Three of his targets were eliminated. But one, no thanks to Ron Stoppable, survived. He never cared much for the young man. He was lax, undisciplined, foolish. And now, Will mentally added to the list of Stoppable's undesirable traits, interfering.
He would have to figure out a way to get rid of Mego, but first, he had to cover up his own involvement. That part of his plan, at least, was going exactly as he knew it would. After any major incident involving a supervillain, Research and Reclamation was always called in as part of the followup investigation. Along with collecting the villain's technology, he knew Dr. Director would want Go Tower checked out. Especially their communications system. Under the cover of doing that, he'd retrieve the shards. Once he put them back where they belonged, nobody would be the wiser.
Betty turned to the new arrivals. “Punctual as always Du. Good. I need you two to get started immediately. Everything, no matter how insignificant, of Aviarius' technology is to be collected. I also want Go Tower searched from top to bottom. Something just isn't right about what happened here, and there may be a clues that will lead us to the answer.”
Will let the faintest of smiles form on his lips. He started to turn toward the tower. “Yes Ma'am. I'll get started on Team Go's headquarters right away.”
He froze in place as she spoke again.
“No Will. Let the professor handle that. Some of this stuff out here is too much for him to handle.” She was gesturing toward the destroyed remains of the giant robotic bird. “In fact, I've taken a personal interest in this case, so I'll give him a hand going over the tower.”
Will Du swallowed loudly as doom filled words echoed through his mind. “I am so fucked!”

Anne bit her lip as she looked at her dumbfounded daughter. She was pretty sure she could have handled this better than she had, but Feeley's remark about her previous visit with James, threw her. She turned to the naked resort manager. “Handel? Would you mind giving us a few minutes alone?”
The man looked from mother, to daughter, and back again. The reaction of the famous Kim Possible made him realize he'd made an major blunder. She had not known about the uniqueness of the resort before hand. Rather than attempt an apology, which under the circumstances might cause even more problems, he decided to bow out. “But of course. I really should check in with Dr. Yarbouti anyway. Just be sure to check in at the reception desk. Your accommodations should already be prepared.”
Once he made his exit, Anne turned back to her daughter. The blush was completely gone, replaced by the paleness of impending shock. She took hold of the girl's arm and led her a few steps to one of the locker filled alcoves. “Sit down Kimberly, before you fall down.”
Kim was so confused, she didn't have the will to resist. She let herself slump down to the floor and leaned back against a cool metal door. It took a few moments for her mind to form a coherent thought. Once it did, she asked. “Why didn't you tell me about this place? That you'd been here before?”
Anne sat down beside her. Her mind was working overtime to come up with something that wouldn't sound completely disingenuous. “I know it's improper to answer a question with a question, but bear with me and think about it. How many missions have you ever turned down when someone was in desperate need?”
Kim frowned at her mother. She wondered if the woman was trying to confuse her even more. She certainly didn't have to think about the answer to that question. “None, but...”
“No buts Kim. Now let me ask just one more question, then I'll explain, ok?”
“I don't see how...”
“One question, that's all.”
Kim huffed. “Fine. Ask.”
Anne understood her daughter's frustration, but knew this was the only way to make her understand. “Had you known all about this place beforehand, would you still have come to aid those sick people?”
Kim stared at her as if she'd just zapped her with a cattle prod. Words tumbled out of her mouth. “You know I would. I couldn't let them suffer...”
Anne let a hint of motherly sternness creep into her voice. “Kim. Be honest.”
Clamping her mouth closed, Kim thought about the whole sitch for a long moment. “Maybe... No... I guess not.”
Wrapping an arm around her daughter's shoulder, Anne pulled her close. “That's why I didn't tell you Kimmie. I know how much it would have hurt you to turn the mission down. I wanted to break it to you gently, after we got settled in. That's why I was so persuasive in getting you to let me come along. So you wouldn't have to face this place alone.”
Kim tried to pull herself out of her funk. She was in this up to her neck and there wasn't much she could do about it now. Thinking back, she remembered the method her mother used to persuade her. The Puppy Dog Pout wasn't something easily resisted. She had good reason to know. It was one of her favorite tactical moves. Knowing it, however, didn't make her any less immune to it.
Seeing that her daughter was coming to grips with her predicament, Anne stood and held her hand out. “Come on Kim. Let's go get our room. I assume you have quite a few questions you want to ask. We can discuss things more there.”
Kim took her mother's hand, and let herself be pulled to her feet. “You mean like, what were you and daddy doing at a place like this?”
Anne swallowed nervously. “Well... Yes. Questions like that.”
Releasing her mother's hand, Kim knew she wouldn't get anymore answers right now. She turned to look at the sign by the door. “Do we really, really, have to go naked?”
“I'm afraid so dear. The resort is very strict about such things. It's either that, or you could try sleeping out on the helicopter pad for a whole week.”
Kim seriously considered her mother's suggestion for a moment. She'd faced hardship before on missions. She could probably do just that, at least for a couple days, but a whole week would be pushing the limits of even her formidable willpower. “I'll do it. But, there had better be room service. Because I'm not leaving the room for the entire week!”

(Go Tower)
Betty Director and Prof. Assay stared at the four glowing shards of crystal she held in her open palm.
The elderly scientist spoke with a confused tremor in his voice. “How could they be here? They should be in my laboratory. I saw Will put them into the high security cabinet myself, just before the start of our yearly inventory.”
His question wasn't the uppermost one in her mind, but it tied into it. Who wanted Team Go dead badly enough to infiltrate GJ headquarters, steal the shards, and place them within Go Tower in such a clandestine manner?
She and Assay had been going over the control room for almost an hour, when frustration got the better of her. They were finding nothing to give them a clue as to what was going on. She left the scientist to go over the communications logs alone, and went to search the rest of the place. A through search, from the rooftop hanger, to the basement storage area, yielded nothing.
The last place she checked was their personal living quarters. She passed a red colored door, to find what could only be the teenage Wego's bedroom. The scattered comic books and music CD’s, discarded junk food wrappers, and a pair of bunk beds were all the confirmation she needed. It was the uppermost bunk, right at her eye level, that showed the first sign of something amiss. A faint red glow coming from under the sheet, which hung off the unmade bed in disarray.
After discovering the first hidden shard, finding the rest, all hidden in exactly the same manner, was a simple task. Now, as she held the glowing fragments in her hand, she faced the serious conundrums of who, how, and why?
She immediately dismissed Aviarius as the culprit. He was smart enough, evil enough, but the method was all wrong. He was much too straightforward in his way of thinking. Something that always led to his downfall in the past. If his attack was related, it was only as a means to an end. Someone used him to do the dirty part of the job for them.
Her thoughts went next to Electronique, Team Go's other major foe. She would have been capable of pulling something like this off, but there was just one problem. She was happily, and willingly, serving out her time in prison. The influence of her own modified Attitudinator saw to that. Unless she was ever released from it's effect, she was incapable of hurting a fly.
Her pool of suspects was growing shallow. Her own brother Sheldon, known to the rest of the world as Gemini, had to be considered. Something like this wouldn't be beyond him. The problem in his case was, and she knew him well enough to know, it would be beneath him. His evil was geared to a worldwide scope. He never pitted himself against any but the best. If he was out to kill anyone, besides herself, it would be Ron Stoppable, not Team Go.
Trying to figure it out based on motivation was getting her nowhere. She focused on means. It had to be someone skilled in infiltration. Both GJ, and Team Go's tower, were well neigh impregnable. They needed the ability to bypass every security measure, and do the job undetected. That kind of talent, and the balls to pull it off, were rare. Neither of the names that sprang to mind belonged to people who had balls though. At least, not in the literal sense.
To anyone else, Shego's name would have been at the top of the list of suspects. She had turned to evil, and was more than capable, but... Betty reached up and touched the black patch on her face. There was no way Shego would do this. She might not like her brothers, but that didn't mean she didn't love them. No, Shego was no more likely the killer than Kim Possible was.
Kim Possible. If anyone had what it took to do this, it would be her. She had infiltrated places many more times secure than GJ. Never hesitated to put the smack down on her enemies...
Betty closed her hand. Hiding the shards from her sight. She forced her mind to stop. Why was she even considering such a completely stupid thing? Her hand opened. She knew why. There could only be one answer. Grasping at straws couldn't make her deny the truth any longer. It was an inside job.
She looked up at Assay. He had access and opportunity. He also had more years with GJ than she'd been alive. Had proven his loyalty more times than she could count. Once more, she forced herself to stop her train of thought.
She opened her hand. Stared at the shards. There was only one person who could have done this. The simple fact was, she didn't want to believe it.
She activated her communicator. “Agent Will Du. Come in...”
There was nothing, except the hiss of static. “Agent Du! Reply.”
Nothing.
Her heart sank, as she realized there wouldn't be a reply.
