"This was so easy," Haru told Katara. "You didn't even see us coming. Some military leader you turned out to be. I can't believe how easy this was."
Katara glared at him and struggled against the mounds of hardened rock and earth that held her hands and feet to the ground. She was thankfully in a sitting position, but she couldn't bend if she couldn't move her hands and feet. Gritting her teeth she tried to concentrate. She could hear the commotion outside the tent and she knew people were dying and the village was being destroyed, and here she was helpless to do anything about it. Haru was right - she was no military leader.
And Mai… when the ground had swallowed her hands a large muscular women had simply walked into the tent and before Mai could react she was out cold, a single blow to the face. The woman had laughed. "So much for Khukuri."
Katara had screamed for help, but no one came. The woman plucked the crown from Mai's hair and tossed it to the ground. Then she grabbed Mai by the hair and dragged her from the tent.
"You weren't even waiting for us. You were sitting ducks," Haru continued proudly. He got down on his hands and knees in front of her. He used his thumbs to brush the tears away from her face. "Katara, don't cry. Not everyone is meant to be a great leader."
"Do not touch me." Katara enunciated every word.
"It's over now. Don't you understand? You don't have to be responsible for any of this anymore."
"What are you talking about?"
"This, Katara!" he said exasperated. "This war. The Fire Nation. We don't belong here. It's time we went home. It's time we focused on our family." Haru placed a hand on her belly and smiled.
She tried to jerk away, but the bonds held. "You're crazy!" she screamed in his face. "This is not your baby!"
"You're right. I hadn't thought of it until now, but we could probably find a couple to adopt it. Then we could start our family the right way."
"I'm not doing anything with you! Ever! You're a coward. You hurt innocent people, and I would never have anything to do with you."
Haru looked at her, puzzled. "I guess it will take some time for you to come around," he said. He sat beside her, leaned over and kissed her throat.
"Get away from me!" She struggled, but wasn't able to dislodge him.
His hand cupped her full breast, squeezing while he licked her throat. "I've wanted this for so long, Katara." With his other hand he flicked a knife through the knots that held her outer robes in place.
Katara screamed again through her tears and hoped someone would come.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Looking around she assessed the situation, taking inventory of what was happening and where her new friends were.
The forest was on fire. Fire benders were setting the tents and wooden houses on fire. The theater stage burned, putting on its last show. The two fire benders who came with them, Lao and Tzu, were trying to fight and put out fires, but couldn't do both.
There were four women facing what looked like large tattooed fighters. Two of the women were using Tessenjutsu expertly for efficient and deadly assaults. Oma and Koko. The other two were making do with their hands, skillfully avoiding attacks and using agility and speed to disable their opponents. Suki and Ty Lee.
There were earth benders fighting other earth benders. A small girl who wasn't so small once she gave herself rock armor. Toph. The other was protecting her, deflecting attacks so that she could deliver her own. Masato.
The two pregnant women, Katara and Mai, were nowhere in sight.
There were many more, and the fight was so intense that no one had noticed when she crawled out of one of the four circular cenotes. No one saw her sadly bury her hands and face in the massive blue wolf's fur.
Kwan sighed and said, "Let's go talk to the fog."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Toph! What is going on?" Aang asked as he landed and folded his glider.
Toph's rock armor temporarily exposed her. "What does it look like?"
"They came from the woods," Masato added as he blocked another attack. "This must be the army that has been destroying the cities."
Twisting and using his staff as a guide, Aang forced the air around him into a spiral and sent it hurling into the four enemies in front of them.
"There's too many of them, and not enough of us," Toph said as her armor crunched back over her body.
Aang looked around and saw what she meant. There were a lot of people in the city. In fact there were easily hundreds more, but they were cowering, hiding, or running away. They weren't fighters, and they didn't know how to defend themselves.
"Where's Katara? And Mai?"
"We haven't seen them."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Suki!" Sokka called as he jumped from Appa and ran towards her.
She turned mid-fight to see who had called her name. "Sokka!" she said and smiled.
The tattooed giant behind her reared up now that she was distracted.
"Suki, look out!"
"What?" She turned, but was too late. The massive man thrust his knife forward, piercing Suki's body.
Then he fell to the ground as Ty Lee somersaulted over him, not just blocking his chi, but killing him where he stood.
Both Ty Lee and Sokka rushed to Suki.
"Don't lift her, she'll bleed more!" Ty Lee ordered. "I should have killed that ogre in the pit. I thought we were all prisoners. I thought we all deserved mercy."
"Where the hell is Katara? We need Katara to heal her. Get her now," he screamed.
Ty Lee nodded and left.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Aang!" Katara screamed. "Help me!"
"What is going on?" Aang asked again as he entered the tent. "Haru?"
Masato and Toph entered the tent, and then Ty Lee.
Haru growled and tore the side of the tent with the knife in his hand. Naked and clearly aroused he slipped through the hole.
Katara was pinned to the floor by her hands and feet. Masato's arms shot up and out, removing her restraints.
Aang knelt beside her, covering her with the large robe laying on the ground.
"Thank goodness you came. I couldn't move."
"I don't understand," he said with pain and confusion in his voice. "Haru did this to you?"
Katara pushed the shreds of her clothes away. He'd had to cut them off of her rather than risk setting her free. "Yes. He's crazy. He thought all of this would impress me and that I would just fall in love with him," she said with obvious disgust and embarrassment.
"Are you okay?" Aang asked through anger and sadness.
"Yes. No. I will be. You came just in time," she cried and hugged him. "I don't know if I could have mentally survived whatever else he was going to do to me."
Ty-Lee pressed in. "I know this is a traumatic moment, but if you're not hurt Suki really needs you. She's been stabbed."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"You get that fire out, and I'll hold them off!" Lao yelled.
Tzu nodded and placing his back to Lao's he swept his arms up and the flames on the burning building ceased. He repeated the motion, extinguishing as much as he could. "How are you doing?" he yelled to his friend as he snuffed out the last flame on the roof.
When Lao didn't answer he turned around. Lao motioned him to be quiet and together they looked around. The fire benders that had been there moments ago were gone. Vanished. The bared chested tattooed fighters were no longer there. The Kyoshi warriors were looking around with just as much puzzlement.
"What just happened?" Tzu whispered.
"I don't know," Lao answered softly. "One moment I was being engulfed in flames and the next they were all just…gone."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With Ty Lee leading the way, the gang gathered around Sokka who was bent over Suki and murmuring to her.
Katara knelt on the other side of the woman and sent a ribbon of water around her still form. There was nothing, no spark of life.
For long moments they listened to Sokka tell Suki everything would be alright between his silent sobs.
"Sokka," Katara said softly.
"No! Not her too. Mom's gone. Yue's gone, so they can't have Suki. They can't have her," he cried and broken into another heave.
Moving to his side, Katara put her arms around her brother. Aang, Toph, and Ty Lee joined them.
"Pipsqueak, do you think you could take Appa back to the Capital City and get Zuko?" Aang asked.
Pipsqueak nodded silently, and with the Duke on his shoulders he headed toward Appa.
"Has anyone else noticed how quiet it is?" Masato asked, keeping watch to make sure no one was going to attack the grieving group. "What happened to all the fighting?"
"He's right," said Toph. "I don't hear any fighting either. I do hear something though."
They looked around trying to figure out what was going on. "What do you hear?" Masato asked.
Toph shushed him and tilted her head. "Someone is yelling," she finally said.
"Where is it coming from?" asked Ty Lee.
"From the woods…" Toph said and trailed off as she stood. Then, "I think it's Mai!"
Katara stood up quickly to follow Toph. She gave Aang a look. "I'll stay with him," Aang promised.
Katara, Masato, and Ty Lee followed Toph into the thick forest. When she could hear Mai's cries Katara ran towards them. "Mai!" she called. "We're coming! Where are you!"
"Here! Katara!" Mai screamed.
Running through more trees, she found a large perfectly round crystal clear pool of water. Looking around she screamed for Mai again. Finally Katara could see her. Unable to handle what she saw she bent over and threw up. She couldn't wait for the others. She had to get Mai down or lose her mind, so she pushed through the nausea and went to her. "I'm here Mai," she whispered. "I'm going to get you down."
"There's a knife. On the ground, right there," Mai said. Katara grabbed it and cut the ropes that bound Mai's naked body to the tree. Mai stumbled back from the tree, and Katara barely had time to catch her as she fell to her knees. Katara lowered herself to the ground beside her.
Ty Lee let out a scream when she saw Mai and turned around, gasping for breath.
Masato cursed and turned away as well.
"What happened?" Toph asked. "What am I missing? Is she okay?"
"No," Ty Lee whispered.
Katara removed her robe even though it was all she wore, and lay it on the ground.
"Try to relax," Katara told her and she coaxed her to lay on the robe on her side. "I'm going to heal you."
"First the baby," Mai whispered. "Please"
"Okay," Katara promised and drew water from the pool. It was hard to focus, but Katara shoved the nausea down and focused on Mai. She imagined the egg breaking over her head to help her slip into the familiar meditative state she used to heal. First she sought out Mai's life force, and then her baby's life force.
"The baby is okay," Katara murmured. "She's just fine."
"She? I'm having a little girl?" Mai asked weakly.
"Yes. I need you to sleep now, Mai. You're safe and I won't let anything happen to you." Before Mai could say anything Katara gently tapped into her subconscious and she was out, breathing softly. Drawing more water she began the healing.
"What happened to her?" Toph asked quietly, solemnly.
"They tried to skin her," Ty Lee choked out. "They tried to cut her tattoos from her back."
"I love you," Katara whispered even though Mai was unconscious.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Where are we?" Jin Wu asked. "Where did all of this fog come from?"
"Where did Mai go?" Yun Qu answered. "We have to finish what we started. We have to get our honor back."
"You're right. She stole our honor. We need to find her."
"I had her," Haru told the sisters, who weren't listening. "I finally had her, and they took her from me." He fell to his knees, naked and sobbing in the swirling fog. "How could they do it? How could they take her from me?"
"What was I doing?" a confused young fire bender asked looking at his blazing hands. Clearly he was going to set something on fire, but what was it? He extinguished the flame and started walking, only to find that they were reignited. "What was I doing?" he repeated, looking at his blazing hands.
"A water bender! Sitting on the Fire Nation throne! An abomination!" Ukano seethed as he pushed his way through the fog. "And my daughter married to that exiled embarrassment of a prince. We have to rescue Ozai and restore our crumbling nation. Mai will help me. I know she will."
"Our honor!" the sisters cried.
"Katara!" Haru wailed.
"My purpose?" numerous lost voices questioned.
"The Nation!" Ukano seethed.
For eternity.

It took over two excruciating hours to reach Hira'a on Appa. Zuko's heart had not stopped banging in his chest since Pipsqueak and the Duke showed up telling him that Sokka, Aang, Katara, and Mai were in the middle of a war and needed him.
Briefly he berated himself for not having gone with Aang in the first place, but it would do him no good to regret the past. It was a lesson he had had to earn instead of learn. Instead he focused on what he could do. He gathered as much information from The Duke as he could.
He now knew Haru had an army and they attacked the city Katara and Mai were in. Suki was dead. Katara had been held hostage, but Aang had freed her. There was no news of Mai. The city was fairly destroyed. Night fell. Zuko would go mad if they didn't land soon.
The Duke leaned over Appa's saddle. "It's not on fire anymore. I guess that's good."
Zuko looked to where The Duke was pointing. There were four large bodies of water in perfect circles, cenotes in the midst of a vast forest, and on the edge of the forest was what remained of Hira'a.
Zuko's feet hit the ground as soon as Appa's did.
"You're here!" Toph exclaimed and threw herself at him, wrapping her arms around him in a tight hug. A camp fire eerily illuminated the damage done to the city. Many people were crowded around it, just staring at the flames. "You have to hurry," she said and released him.
"What's wrong? Where are Katara and Mai?"
Toph took his hand and led him toward the tents. "This way."
He let her lead him to a tent that had been hastily set apart from the others, a small fire sat in front of the gapping entrance. A scream split the sad silence. "Katara!"
Zuko barreled his way into the tent and froze as he took in the situation. A pit had been hallowed out in the ground, and stone had been hardened on either side. Mai and Ninni stood on either side of Katara, holding her steady. She was naked and slick with sweat. Her feet were anchored on either side of the pit she was squatting over. Uma knelt in front of her, bending a healing blue water between her hands. "You're doing so well," she said to Katara. "You're almost there. He's crowning!"
"Zuko!" both Mai and Katara cried out his name when they saw him. Katara let go of Ninni and reached for him, almost falling over. He rushed in and took Ninni's place. He didn't have time to be overwhelmed by the relief of seeing Mai and Katara alive, or the panic of seeing a woman giving birth for the first time. Katara clutched his arm as she pushed, howling with the effort and pain.
Zuko met Mai's eyes. He saw strength and love in them, and together they encouraged Katara to push again. "The shoulders are free!" Uma announced and then there was a red slimy baby in Uma's arms. Zuko's heart sank. The child didn't appear to be breathing. Why wasn't he breathing?
"Focus," Ninni demanded. Katara moaned again. "You just have to push one more time for the afterbirth, and then you're all done."
With a final push Katara groaned and her legs gave out. Zuko now understood what the pit was for. He and Mai lifted Katara over a pile of blankets that had been turned into a makeshift bed. Then the sound of a wailing infant shrieked through the tent.
Zuko stared down at his son in awe as Uma placed him in his mother's arms. Immediately the infant search for food with his mouth, finding Katara's nipple, and quieting.
"What will you name him?" Mai asked softly and laid her head against Katara's.
"His father will name him," Katara answered.
"Izon," Zuko told them. It was a strong Fire Nation name, bestowed on his Water Tribe son. He hoped it would be a link between the two nations, a beacon that all nations were really one.
"I'm ready to stop running," Katara said weakly. "I'm ready," she repeated as she fell asleep against her family and nursed their son.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"You need more rest, Katara," Mai said without conviction.
Katara kissed her and slipped the sling over her head, nestling Izon comfortably against her body. It had been three days, and while it had been a luxury to confine herself to just Mai and Zuko for a while after the horrors they had been through, she needed to get up or go crazy. She knew there were people that need their help, and now that she was feeling rested and strong it was time to help them.
"Zuko will disapprove."
Katara shrugged and smiled. "Let him disapprove."
Mai smiled and followed her out into the morning sunshine. Though it had only been a short time since the war Katara saw that the rebuilding had already begun, but the morale of the people was low. Slowly she walked through the city, trying to figure out what she could do to bring back the spirit of these people.
Aang, who was helping clear debris from the main thoroughfare, joined her and hugged her around the baby. "I'm glad to see you're feeling better."
"How is Sokka?" Sokka had not come to see the baby, but Katara understood. If it had been Mai or Zuko instead of Suki she didn't know how she would survive.
"He's trying," Aang said and rubbed his head, closing his eyes against the sadness. "He buried Suki next to the water and made her a bed of flowers, and he's talking to her. He says he hadn't finished saying goodbye."
"Have you discovered where Haru's army went?" she asked, trying not to dwell.
"We don't know. It was really strange. They just seemed to suddenly disappear. I sent the SeaRavens and Kyoshi Warriors to scout out the forest, but there's no sign of any of them."
"But Zuko said their camp was found?"
"We think so. It's a long way from here, though, where the Red Dessert starts. They had to have traveled all night to get here on foot. It was pretty deserted. The only people we found were a few children."
"Where are the children now?"
"Here," Aang said and led them to a house that had not been spared during the attack. It was Noren's house. "They're staying here until they can be adopted out." Aang knocked on the door and Ursa answered. Their mother-in-law smiled widely and hugged them, dropping a kiss on her grandson's head before inviting them in.
"You're staying with Noren?"
"Noren is an old friend of mine," Ursa confided. "He used to be called Ikem, when I lived here as a young woman. We were to be married before Azulon decreed that I would be married to Ozai."
They passed through the front of the house, which was sparsely decorated, but felt like a home with the woven rugs and meticulously hand carved furniture. There were a couple children running around, and through the back door where they could play outside away from the debris and new construction.
A toddler with a tuft of black hair looked around curiously and when he saw Mai he squealed and started to crawl towards her.
"Tom-Tom!" Mai said incredulously. "How did you get here?" She picked her baby brother up and hugged him close.
Aang, who had once rescued and returned the tyke to his parents, did a double take and smacked his forehead. "That's why he looked so familiar."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As she made her way into the forest it was clear why the city's morale was low. Toph, Masato, and a few other earth benders had generously created burials for loved ones, scattered throughout the forest. Survivors lovingly marked their graves with flowers that were now dying.
Katara quietly approached Sokka at the edge of the water and sat beside him. Her brother looked over at her and then down at his nephew. Then he put his arms around them and cried while Katara comforted him. Aang joined them, and then Mai. Eventually Toph and Zuko make their way in as well. No one said anything as Sokka poured out his grief.
When he had cried enough tears, he cleared his throat. "Okay, it's time to teach my nephew a few things about what it means to be Water Tribe."
The gang laughed and Katara unwound the baby and handed him to Sokka. "So, what did you decide to name him?"
"Izon," Katara announced proudly.
"Izon!? That's hardly a name for a Water Tribe warrior. I'll have to teach you twice as much to make up for your Fire Nation name." Sokka winked at Zuko as he stood. "Now the first thing you have to learn is how to build a boat."
Izon cooed and then dozed off.
"Well, maybe we should start with something more simple."
And that was Sokka, thought Katara. He probably could have sat there by the water until he died of starvation, but if there was a sorrowful face in need of cheering the grief couldn't hold back his humor.
"How are you feeling?" Zuko asked as he hugged and kissed her, then Mai.
"Good and bad," she answered.
"Tom-Tom?" he asked bewildered when he realized who the child in Mai's arms was.
"Aang said he was at the camp where Haru's army was. I have no idea how he could have gotten there."
"I'm glad you found him," Zuko whispered.
Together they headed back toward the village, but Katara felt a tug on her dress. She looked down to see Kwan standing beside her in a white dress and holding a basket of flowers. She knelt beside the girl.
"Where did you get such a pretty dress?" Katara asked.
"The Spirit World," Kwan answered. Katara stared at her in surprise, but Kwan picked a flower out of the basket. "These are Peach Lilies," she explained. "Do you remember what I told you about peaches?"
"That they are a symbol of hope for the Fire Nation?"
The little girl nodded. "These have dozens and dozens of seeds, and they smell just like peaches. All you have to do is crush the bloom to free the seeds." She demonstrated, crushing one of the delicate flowers. When she opened her palm it was full of seeds, which she sprinkled on Suki's burial mound.
Understanding, Katara widened her stance and drew on the water from the pool, spraying it over the seeds. The flowers grew effortlessly, hardly requiring any direction from her other than to grow. Suki's burial was now covered in the peach flowers, lovely and fragrant.
"Thank…" Katara looked down to thank Kwan for the idea, but the little girl was gone. Only the basket full of flowers remained.
Katara picked up the basket and as she walked from mound to mound she crushed the blooms in her fist and released the seeds. Then as she walked over the mounds, drawing water up from the ground, the flowers grew in her wake. People came to watch her as she worked until the entire town was crowded into the woods. Some of them cried, and some sang songs, but all of their spirits were raised.
When she walked over the final mound she found Mai and Tom-Tom, Zuko, and Sokka and Izon happily waiting for her.
