Stanley looked worn out as he sat at Fords’ kitchen table. A steaming cup of coffee between his hands as Ford leans against the countertop, he wasn’t wholly sure what Stan did and did not know about what had happened to him.
“Stanley, do you remember coming here?” Stan looked up at him slightly confused and shook his head.
“Whoever brought me was an idiot,” Stanley said without any heat, Ford snorted unable to help himself, because yes of course Stan hadn’t forgotten their fallout. Only his short-term memory would be affected. But, Apathy and lack of aggression would make Stanley non-argumentative with him. That could be both a blessing and a nightmare, Ford wasn’t sure how to feel about that. They would need time he supposed for him to figure that one out and they had at least a week to spend together.
He knew what depression can drive someone to do and as much as he was angry at Stanley he also needed his help to put a stop to Bill’s plans and since he couldn’t do it...He wouldn’t be able to stay awake so he would have to figure out a way to not hurt Stanley.
“I think I got hurt? I mean when I was aware of what was happening around me I was in a hospital I think and I’m pretty sure it had to do with the old lamp I found but I’m not… I’m not a hundred percent sure, the doc’s said that I’d have some lingering side effects or somethin’.”
So he was aware of some of what happened to him, but what did an old Lamp have to do with whatever SCP-316 was? Was there a correlation between the two? He’d have to let that go because no doubt the organization that Fiddleford had become part of had to be secretive. Otherwise, he would have heard of them and heard of whatever SCP’s were. Shit, here he was looping himself and spacing out like some kind of fool!
“Well, they did give me a list of things to watch out for...They said the effects last up to a week.” Stanley closed his eyes and rubbed them, looking even more defeated than he had when he’d shown up at the door.
“Great.” The utter sarcasm in his voice only reminded Stanford of better days, of days before he hated his brother and really in the end he didn’t, couldn’t actually hate Lee. But it was better than forgiving him and then getting stabbed in the back again, yet Stanley was the only person he could trust to take his book far away so that Bill couldn’t get his hands on it.
Of that at least he was certain of. There wasn’t a whole lot anymore to be certain of in his life right now with Bill messing around in his head, he would have to explain a few things to Stanley after twenty-four hours were up, but he wasn’t sure how long into those twenty-four hours Stanley was actually in.
“How long were you in the hospital?” Stanford was pretty sure Lee had not gone to a hospital or at the very least there would be not recorded. Stanley frowned eyes shifting from side to side like he was reading an invisible book.
“I. I don’t know, I just remember a lot of guys running around in white coats.” Stanley looked incredibly uncomfortable by that. Stanford moved forward to place a hand on one of Stanley when Stanley flinched back hard, coffee sloshing in the cup onto the table and Stanley’s other hand. Stanford didn’t understand, why would Stanley?
“I. I don’t. Please don’t move so fast towards me okay?” Stanley slurred fairly more heavily than he had at any point in their conversation. But, why? Was this another side effect of the thing that messed with Stanley?
“What happened Stanley?” His brother shook his head.
“It’s nothing.” But it was something because that had been a really strong reaction to a simple gesture. Stanley’s visceral reaction to physical touch meant that something had happened to him to make him want to avoid touch.
“Stanley.” Stanley sighed, hands in his hair.
“I don’t like people touching me anymore, makes my skin crawl.” Why what had happened in the ten years since he had seen Stanley? To make him react the way he did to something so benign?
“Will you tell me about it?” Because if Stanley was in trouble he might not be the best person to give the Journal to.
“After Pa kicked me out I tried a lot of things to make money, sometimes it wasn’t enough, and I. I had to do some things that I really didn’t want to. The first week wasn’t so bad you know? I was still near home and sometimes ma would come to find me and give me food or money...Then pa found out and beat the tar out of me. Told me to get lost, leave.”
He hadn’t known, ma hadn’t said anything to him. They hadn’t spoken of Stanley at all and well would he have listened to her then when he was still so mad?
“Where did you go after that?” Stanley shrugged, eyes looking anywhere but at Stanford.
“Here and there.” He supposed he would leave that at that.
“And When and why did you gain an aversion to touch?” Stanley’s distant expression worried Stanford because this was not the brother he had known who was so charismatic.
“About half a year after I got kicked out Because someone I considered a friend held me down and used me...I didn’t have a choice, it was either let em or I’d get shot.” Stanford froze, a sharp pain zinging through his rib cage. Stanley’s Monotone voice did not make that information any more palpable, Stanley had been...Oh god. Stanford made it to the sink before he vomited, bile acidic causing his eyes and nose to leak.
He turned the tap on and rinsed away the smell, he cupped his hands together and caught some water to sip on. Tears still streaming down his face, he didn’t know oh god how could he have known that Stanley would have had to? It just, He thought Stanley would have been fine, would have been safe, and yet there was the proof. Stanley had allowed someone to rape him so he wouldn’t get shot dead.
Stanley was looking down at his coffee cup like contemplating it, or if he could drown in it. No wonder he didn’t like people touching him! He wouldn’t have gone to anyone, he wouldn’t have trusted adults after Pa had kicked him out. “Stanley, would you stay here with me?” It was the absolute least he could do for Stanley and curse Bill, Stanley would just have to get used to locking him up so that Bill couldn’t use his body against Stanley.
“What choice do I have? The doctors told me I would have to stay with someone for a little bit.”
