Lincoln had just left Lucy’s room and was making his way to the home's eldest leni when he stopped Looking back at the door with worry. Something had clearly been bugging lucy. But nothing he could do for now just needed to do his best to cheer her up later. It dawned on Lincoln he should probably text Clyde he reached into his pocket to get his phone feeling the sheer dress Leni had left on the couch. He'd give that back to her when he woke her up. Honestly he didn’t get why she was wearing something this….see through to a work party. He was worried her boss might be taking advantage of her. Leni was sweet, trusting, a bit air headed. Sometimes she could be spacy to the point of well….dumb. Lori used to have to help her get ready in the morning, and now it was Lincoln’s duty to help her with that some days leni wouldn't even go to class if Lincoln hadn't picked her outfit for her. What if Leni's boss was taking advantage of the fact Leni didn't know any better. But after sending his message to Clyde about haiku and Lucy joining them. Lincoln had gone from concern to dismissing his paranoia. Leni wasn't a kid; she wouldn't be manipulated so easily right?
Unlike Lucy, Leni opened the door right after Lincoln knocked. And she looked dead tired, there were visible bags under her eyes that matched the ones Lincoln perpetually had. Still she was beaming at him with a big signature leni smile pulling focus away from the bags under her eyes standing in her nightgown that was just big enough to fit her frame hugging her curves more than the sheer dress and riding up to just above the thighs , Lincoln's own fault there.
He damaged Leni's old nightgown when he was trying to get his cosplay outfit from her closet. He panicked and tried to fix things with her sewing machine, unfortunately he was only passingly good with one when he was calm and this was panic Lincoln much much more prone to mistakes. So he stitched it to his own sleeve. Frantic and askingLori for help she had talked Lincoln into where to get a replacement and sent Lincoln her measurements. Thing was, those were from a year and a half ago. Lori had neglected to account for lenis…assets growing. But either Leni didn't notice or just didn't mind as she always acted like everything was fine wearing the nightgown as if it was perfectly normal even though if she bent down the wrong way whoever was behind her would get an interesting sight of the full moon.
Thing was...Lincoln had already fixed his mistakes even having Leni do her own measurements so he could get her one more fitting yet here she was.
“Lincoln, how's my favorite brother doing?” Leni said, giving him a light hug and then tilting her head up and giving him quick but exaggerated kisses on each of his cheeks. it was a new gesture one Lincoln wasn't expecting. He also wasn't expecting the scent of alcohol on her breath
“Uh well first i'm your only brother last I checked at least. I think mom and dad decided to stop at 11.” Lincoln said teasing his sister “fun night sis?”
“O m goodness it was the absolute best!” leni said before gushing about the new summer casual line. How they had taken her idea of a short that was still colorful and flowy at the hips with a color palette that made it like a miniature sundress. About their boss Alex and how cool and amazing they were and how Alex even insisted on spending the whole after party making sure Leni was comfortable. And even invited them to another party they were having at their house in two weeks
Lincoln seemed a bit taken aback by all of this. He knew Leni was talented in the aspects of life she was passionate about. But he didn't know she had made that big an impression. He was left without any words just looking up at his sister with a proud smile. He knew that school had not been something leni had been able to wrap her head around. And trying her best had left Leni stressed. Lincoln was so happy seeing his sister shining and that her boss seemed to notice how talented she was.
“Oh right! You left this downstairs.” Lincoln sajs pulling out lenis sheer dress only to be given a gasp in shock and horror. “What?”
“Lincoln you don't just shove a couture dress in your pocket like a balled up tissue. I stitched those extra deep pockets so you could use them for good not evil. Have I taught you nothing about being kind to your fabrics?” Leni chastised Lincoln who somehow had been reverted from the confident teenager he'd grown into to the stammering awkward boy from yesteryear.
“B-b-b-but Lily was sitting on it. And I was on the phone with Clyde, then Lucy needed a hug. I just put it in there for a bit…..I'm sorry.” Lincoln said feeling caught in a no win scenario.
Leni couldn’t help but giggle at his antics. She laid down the dress. “Relax, I'm not like super mad or anything. Just be kinder to clothes in the future besides it was my mistake for taking it off downstairs anyway. Guess I just forgot it. So thanks for bringing it back linky.” Leni said approaching her taller younger brother and giving him a kiss on the lips it wasn’t anything especially intimate, maybe a half a second but it was sudden and strange Lincoln pulling his head away and looking at Leni confused.
“Uh what was that for?” He felt the need to ask.
“Oh it’s just me saying thank you for the dress. Alex taught it to me. It’s like totally a big thing in the old country apparently. But you're only supposed to do it with someone you're close to.” Leni said as if all of that made perfect sense.
“Oh ok. And does Alex often thank you like this?” Lincoln asked those nervous assumptions bubbling: was this guy really manipulating his sister?
“Oh yeah, like when I agree to stand in for a model. Or I go get coffee for everyone. Or when I have a good idea on a design. Or just when I do favors around the office.” Leni said
“Oh well dad wanted me to get you for breakfast You should probably head down before your egg white omelette gets cold. And your kale smoothie gets warm.” Lincoln said now contemplating and planning his next move. He'd need to talk to his parents about what to do with this Alex guy.
“Oh you're so right. Thanks a bunch linky.” Leni said, knocking him out of his surprised state by kissing him again. He began to wonder if this was gonna become a trend.
“Oh right lynn.” Lincoln said out loud remembering that he had one more sister to wake up. He made his way to his room only to catch Lynn in the middle of the hallway in her pjs. “Come on lame o, race you down stairs.” She said running past him.
“Hey who are you calling lame o” Lincoln said forgoing the stairs knowing he’d never catch up and instead sliding down the railing like when he was younger. Unfortunately Lincoln had not worked out how to stop and thus landed on Lynn as they rounded the corner tumbling to the floor. “Ok I remember being better at that.” Lincoln said clutching his head
“Well actually elder sibling your increased mass means that you were simply moving with a higher overall acceleration due to gravity.” Lisa said from the couch having finished her breakfast in the time it took Lincoln to get everyone “you were also smaller when you used to do that. meaning the space between the railing and the wall was more suitable to your needs of stopping and performing the necessary movements to brace yourself, something you were unable to do this time.” The preteen genius started crunching some numbers “Hmm it does harbor the question why try it again after all these years?”
“I don’t know, feeling nostalgic?” Lincoln said as Lynn tossed him off of her. Taking her seat and tapping the chair next to her despite the fact that now it was just them, Leni, Lily, and Lucy. It had been a weird morning even as Lucy joined them taking her seat on the opposite side of the table from Lynn and Lincoln not looking up at the two of them as the awkwardness from this morning hadn’t fully died down for her. But at least now everything would flow smoother for the rest of the day. Dad had left for the restaurant, mom was in the basement writing up her next book. And he was going to the comic shop in a few hours with Clyde and Lucy. Everything was normal.
“So Lincoln about your recent break up.” Lisa said from the couch Lincoln could feel his blood run cold as he spat up the orange juice he’s just taken a sip of. as all of the sisters in the house suddenly turned their attention and focus to him. Lola and Lana even popping their heads out of their shared room.
Lincoln’s eyes darted from sister to sister all expectant of some answer. Lincoln figured maybe he could play it off pretending it was A misunderstanding. “What are you talking about Lisa? I don’t recall saying anything about any sort of break up.” He said giving an admittedly flimsy excuse his hands in his pajama pocket texting Clyde a secret sos.
“I happened to be tinkering with some communications technology. And inadvertently caught you and Clyde calling on a wide band radio receiver. I wasn’t going to pry for more than a minute but I heard Clyde mention you and this Stella girl going through a break up so of course I had to do my duty as a sister and gather all of the intel I could.” Lisa said nonchalantly before joining the others at the table. “So tell us what happened?”
“Aww Lincoln do you need a hug?” Leni asked not even waiting for him to answer before wrapping him in an embrace.
Lynn on the other hand veered in the opposite direction giving Lincoln a slug in the ribs. “Why didn’t you tell me you and Stella were dating. Or that you’d broken up. Are you keeping secrets from me stinkin '?”
Lincoln winced from the hit before shaking his head in adamant denial “Guys I’m fine like I told Clyde and Lucy. We didn’t break up, me and Stella were not in a relationship.”
“Precisely you seem incapable of forming a lasting relationship despite your rather varied and sorted dating history. You will go on dates for unexplained periods.” Lisa would interject. She honestly found the whole process fascinating at first she assumed it was a simple flaw in Lincoln But it happened at an alarming frequency and with varied time frames some of these casual interactions would last 2 weeks some like Ronnie Anne for example had been recurring for years on end. It was something of an unexplained phenomenon.
“Develop these supposedly ‘deep’ crushes. That you keep trying to hide.” Lola chimed in not enjoying how Lincoln’s bad habit could affect her own reputation once she reached high school, a time that was fast approaching. The last thing she needed was someone thinking she was related to a dork who kept getting dumped. Or just as bad. some play boy who kept messing around with any girl he could.
“And then suddenly nothing we don’t see her anymore or even hear about her usually like she fades into the background. Like when you and girl Jordan became ‘study buddies.’ Then basically stopped talking to her. That's kinda cold bro.” Lana on the other hand was completely invested in her brother's happiness. She just wanted him to be happy and didn’t think that this whole thing really felt like the Lincoln she knew.
“Guys it’s not like that…” Lincoln stated trying to calm things down and plead his case
“Perhaps we should have another couch session Lincoln.” Lisa says with a hint of inquiry in her voice. “ we need to get to the bottom of your underlying commitment issues. And I have been looking for a reason to dabble in the soft sciences again.”
Lola chimed in now she may have traded in her pageants for social media influence but she was ever the princess and took great pleasure in getting involved with other people's lives “he needs a steady girlfriend someone who he won’t so easily jump ship from. Oh maybe online dating there’s plenty of apps nowadays and this will let him talk to them a while before jumping into things also that way Lisa can monitor his chats.”
“That's like a great idea!” Leni said, grabbing Lincoln’s phone from his pocket fiddling around with it. “I have the perfect one. It's called tlc garden, it’s so cute it starts off with anonymous chatting. The girls all use cute flower names. '' Leni was trying to get into Lincoln’s phone with little to know luck.
“How is that gonna help if he’s talking to anonymous girls?” Lana didn’t get the train of thought“actually forget the e dating we should just set him up ourselves. Lynn Lucy you're both in highschool you’ve gotta have some single friends who you could pair him off with especially you lynn we all know how much he’s obsessed with tomboys. I’m sure you could find him a girl who won’t settle for his flighty antics.” She was trying to get to what she believed was the heart of the matter. Her brother needed someone who could keep him focused and keep him committed. After all that’s what they had done for him for years. Guided him, educated him and kept his antics to a minimum but they couldn’t follow him on dates but they could make sure to find him girls that filled those needs as well as they did.
“It’s not gonna be that simple….” Lucy said just above a whisper not wanting to get involved with this and feeling too awkward and reserved to step in and end it. “You don’t understand Lincoln’s…” Lucy didn’t finish her sentence as she looked over at her big brother with worry, the first one to notice the stress he was feeling and understand completely. He was feeling overwhelmed, smothered and at the same time talked over as if his opinions, needs, or desires were irrelevant. Even if it was coming from a place of love that didn’t change the impact it was having.
Lincoln Was trying to keep his cool. He knew his sisters meant well that these actions were being taken out of love and honestly he knew he sucked at telling them no which didn’t really help his situation. But he was reaching a point of Blowing up watching Lola try and pawn him off Lisa helping Leni crack his password so they could set him up on some hook up app. He clenched the table cloth in hands , trembling slightly as he whispered out “guys…”
“Will you guys chill out seriously Lincoln doesn’t need a new girlfriend!” Lynn said coming to his defense, snatching his phone away from Lisa and leni. “He needs some space to take his mind off things. Not everyone crowding him trying to jump him into a new relationship. So stinkin how about you finish your food then you and I can get dressed and go on a bike ride. Grab some subs on the way back. Then maybe catch a cheesy action movie.”
Lincoln looked up at Lynn with a wide grin honestly right now she was his savior. The sole boy of the loud siblings was tempted to lunge out and hug her. Lynn could be abrasive and stubborn in fact she was no stranger to butting into his love life herself like when she set him up with one of her roller derby teammates for the Sadie Hawkins dance. but she had in this moment reminded him that she was still his big sister and above all else would protect him.
“Uhh actually me and Lucy already have plans. We’re supposed to be going to Barkley with Clyde to check out this awesome comic shop. How about we go for a ride when I get back?” Lincoln says quickly, snatching his phone from Leni and rushing off to get showered and changed.
“He didn’t even finish his breakfast.” Leni says worried, prepared to go upstairs and talk to him before Lynn shot her a quick but domineering look, her eyes stern and serious prompting Leni to sit down.
“But wait Lincoln and I are supposed to binge the ace savvy show… I’m going on without him. He can catch up and we can watch the finale.” Lily said a bit grumpy even as she continued to draw the picture she was drawing cause she thought Lincoln was sad
Lola had already decided this was not over, reputation reflected upon those in your company. Loris had reflected on the other sisters in highschool, Lynn’s still reflected how people saw Lincoln and even Lucy. And Lincoln and Lucy’s would no doubt reflect upon her and Lana. Lucy was something of a static existence even lola doubted she could change her into someone more normal. But Lincoln, her dorky brother, was much much more malleable, easily adaptable to any of his sisters' needs. She’d just need the right scheme and a bit of help and besides this would all be good for Lincoln in the long run.
“I don’t get why Linky needs a girlfriend in the first place.” Lily chimed in, having finished an adorable picture of Lincoln as a superhero with her as his plucky sidekick fighting crime . “I mean he’s got us after all.” She said the last part with a big smile. She honestly didn’t get the whole dating thing and if she was honest wasn’t keen on sharing her big brother's time.
Lucy who had barely spoken out of her still somewhat weird headspace brought on from how embarrassed she was with her behavior earlier turned to Lilly. “Siblings and lovers fulfill different needs. While the two are both rolls of love. the two are divided by a line that once one crosses could be devastating..” Lucy said in an ominous manner looking around, noting the eyes of confusion looking at her. Lucy could swear she felt her face blushing slightly. She had just made a fool of herself and thus skulked upstairs.
