Chapter 2
It had been three weeks since he had seen her, three weeks from the terrible birthday that hadn’t been so terrible after all.
He still felt there was something missing from his life, something forgotten… but he had more pressing needs. Vicky. The red-headed monster, the love of his life. Dimmsdale was a small place after all and it was inevitable that their paths would cross. She looked terrible, she looked wonderful. It was clear she wasn’t sleeping, dark smudges under her eyes. She missed him as much as he missed her. Maybe more.
It wasn’t quite spring yet; winter was passing though. A three-day weekend trip was planned by Timmy’s school. This was kind of unusual. Timmy’s Elementary School didn’t do unplanned trips. They rarely did planned trips. And even if they did plan something, it was usually something lame and cheap, on the schedule months ahead of time. Frankly, there was never enough money in the budget to pay for decent school trips (or even install seatbelts on the buses, in spite of Federal, State and City ordinances). The new school administrator, Wanda Venus explained that it was part of a new program, fully funded.
Wanda didn’t know why she was there or using small amounts of Fairy power to affect one class in a small suburban school. She didn’t know these kids. She was supposed to be preparing for her next assignment, which would be far away from this crazy shithole. And what kind of name was Dimmsdale anyway? But there was a hole in her heart. Something was missing from her magical life. She couldn’t say for sure what was wrong, only that something was.
It was like going on a trip, making sure that the luggage was packed, double checking for tickets and credit cards and driving all the way to airport, just knowing you had forgotten something, something important and couldn’t remember what! Of course, none of these things apply to a Fairy Odd Parent! But the feeling was the same. Wanda needed to do something.
She had to avoid using her powers as much as she could, keep Jorgen from finding out she was off the reservation. She had flown over the town and instinct guided her to this school. Usual mix of unhappy kids, nerds, bullies, princesses, dangerous juvenile lunatics surrounded by adults who were supposed to care, but really couldn’t give a shit. One kid in a pink hat stood out because he seemed so unhappy. She wouldn’t have noticed him (well, except for that dumb pink hat), he seemed like an average kid that no one stands. But there was something about him that burned. The sadness in his heart made her want to cry. The souls of children didn’t usually burn like that.
“He may not even be why I am here.” She thought. She began checking out the other kids, the teachers and parents.
“Woo, that’s a bad one!” she thought, flying over a red-head teenager. She could feel the evil radiate from her eyes. “Pink like mine, but…” then it struck her. Something else. Familiar. That same burning inside.
She knew at once that whatever she needed to do couldn’t have anything to do with that kid or teenager… or could it? They didn’t seem to be related. There was a big age difference. To a Fairy, 6 years was nothing, six hundred years was nothing! But to humans… kids? 13 vs 19 or 20 was forever. “Wait a minute.” Wanda’s senses were alert. “Oh, nothing unusual, evil babysitter and the kid she ‘sits on’.” She’d seen this a million times before. The burning must be hatred for each other.
She had targeted several kids, three boys, two girls and the teenage redhead.
AJ didn’t seem like he was need of Fairies. His life was already charmed. Caring, attentive dads, super intelligent. “Maybe a little awkward, but the kid was going places!” No, he didn’t need Fairies.
Blonde kid, Chester, now he was a good candidate, trailer park trash, ashamed of single parent, the father. “The kid was wearing a bag over his head, for Jorgen’s Sake!” Wanda considered. He was the best candidate, but her heart still said keep looking.
Pink hat kid. “Strange, I keep forgetting his name… Timmy? Yeah Timmy. Inattentive parents, evil babysitter (at least the parents hired one, that shows some concern… right?). Bullies, etc.” Something was going on; Wanda just couldn’t put her wand on it.”
“Trixie Tang… Oh, boy” Wanda thought. “What a Princess! Entitlement up the kazoo” (at this point if Cosmo was here, he’d be poofing up a hundred polar bears in Scottish kilts playing the kazoo, then turning on the cheering crowd and eating them… she smiled at the image). Anyway, Trixie was rich, popular and conceited enough for six pop stars. Everyone loves her, but not as much as she loves herself. Hates her friends, causes chaos and confusion. “She probably needs a Fairy, but it’s too late to do her any good.”
Then there was Veronica. Wanda scanned her. “OMG. A head full of snakes! Insane, serial killer material. If she had Fairies, she would break every one of Da’Rulez in the first hour. Wanda wondered if there might be more to Veronica than meets the wand. But there was so much crazy in her head, it was hard to see if there was a real human being in there… somewhere.
“Vicky, evil babysitter. This one was pretty intense,” Wanda knew. She had seen lot of evil babysitters over the years. This one was pretty close to being the worst. Young Vlad The Impaler was worse, Little Jackie the Ripper was worse. Nero the Kid… almost as bad. Thinking about the other bad babysitters made her start to shiver. Whatever she needed to do here had something to do with Vicky. “But there’s something else there…” she let the thought hang. Something new? Wanda wasn’t expecting to find love so she didn’t look for it, didn’t recognize it.
Then there was ‘The Pink Hat Kid’, “What’s his name again? Oh, I already had him on the list… and why can’t I think of his name?” Anyway. She thought the best way to figure this out was to get all of them together in one place and see what happens. “Probably going to be Chester or ‘Princess Tang’. Probably just need to grant a single wish and get back to Cosmo, before he blows something up… like the universe… again!”
