Firebenders naturally rose with the sun, it imbued them with an energy that was intoxicating and invigorating. As such Azula never had much trouble waking up at sunrise. She began the day with a few stretches and a brisk run around her camp in order to work off the nerves that had begun to wrack up in her mind about her plan. There was no way to do this well, she reasoned. She would just have to get it over and done with. Yet she was still playing the few possibilities in her head and even fewer of them were favourable. It was uncomfortable for Azula to be in a position where she had so little power, she usually made sure she held all the cards in any situation but in this one, she would not. She would be totally at their mercy if she wanted their help to recapture the Dragon Throne. The princess in exile made three laps of her camp before stopping and deciding not to delay further. Procrastination was unbecoming and it would be better to get this over with quickly. So, taking a large piece of rope and a dagger she made her way to the cliff edge.
Making sure to tie the rope to a sturdy looking tree and deciding to tug on it a few times to test its strength she began to make preparations for her decent. She did not know what to expect of the Western Air Temple if she was honest. She knew that she was above it as she had made a habit of memorising key geographic locations in the world during her childhood, but other than using it as a beacon from which to discern location she never truly wondered what the ruins would be like. She was never the sentimental type and preferred things for their usefulness rather than any sense of beauty. Though as she repelled down the cliff, the rope supporting her weight as she did so, and the temple came into view she couldn't help but be impressed with the structure. A series of large stone buildings hung from the roof of the cliff face giving the impression that she was the one upside down. The beautifully crafted architecture was decayed in some places where nature seemed to take over with her numerous vines and trees. This fact only seemed to add to its aesthetic qualities. The area looked serene, peaceful even and for a while the fire princess was moved by the sight.
The feeling didn't last long however, she had a mission and if one thing was true about her it was that she got things done. She began to lower herself onto one of the outstretched platforms that jutted out below her. The platform belonged to one of the larger structures in the temple and she could see multiple bridges which connected each of the buildings. She reasoned that it would not be too hard to navigate. It was then that the stillness of this place was shattered by the loud and obnoxious scream of a young boy. As her feet touched the ground she cut herself from the rope and searched for the source of the shout.
"Wooo...weee" it came again and she saw a young boy in what looked like a wheelchair gliding through the air above her between two of the buildings to either side of her. "Yeah!" It came again from the boy. She found his presence annoying and considered for a brief moment shooting him down but that would probably not endear her to her soon to be allies so she stayed her hand. Then she saw the Avatar shoot by the first boy with his blue glider, the Avatar was doing circles around the first boy both of them laughing hard in obvious enjoyment. She didn't really know what to make of the whole incident unfolding before her and decided to hide before she was noticed. She would make herself known to the Avatar but she decided that she would do it on her own terms. Then out of nowhere, in particular, the flying bison showed up with the rest of the Avatar group on his back. They were shouting at Aang about something they wished to talk about. It was all happening too far away for her to make out but then suddenly the Avatar was driving toward her. She panicked for a moment but soon reasoned that he was just looking for a spot to rest as he showed no signs of urgency. When he landed he did so dangerously close to Azula who immediately rushed to hide behind a pillar so he would not notice her presence. Then the bison landed behind him and his friends got off the creature, all of them and she were now on the same platform, within twenty or thirty meters of each other.
"Ok, you can do that while I show you the giant Pai Sho table" the Avatar shouted back to his friends as they dismounted. "Oh, and you're going to love the "All-Day Echo Camber". Azula noticed that the blind earthbender girl was with them knew almost immediately that her cover was blown. Well, she couldn't hide forever she supposed.
"I think that will have to wait..." was all the blind earthbender said before pointing in her direction. At this point there was little point in delaying so, cover well and truly blown, she decided to show her face to the group. When she did so their faces showed at first, all manners of shock and confusion. The surprised gasps and little yelps of the group didn't last long as their shocked expressions soon contorted into anger. The watertibe peasants, the Avatar and the earthbender all took defensive stances to protect themselves from what they undoubtedly believed was an inevitable attack. She took one as well, instinctively and began to eye down the group. The bison was quick to run behind its master, obviously scared of her and began to growl at her general direction from behind the group. The beast was more imposing than she remembered but she decided it was best to ignore the obviously enraged animal as she began to access her situation.
'The Firenation must have found us" the watertibe boy spouted as his eyes began to dart around the place looking for any reinforcements the Princess brought with her.
"No, they haven't, I cam here alone" she said in her usual calm and yet somehow sinister tone.
"Why would you do that?" the waterbender asked her tone far more serious and authoritative than her brother's. "It has to be a trick."
"I cannot feel anyone else nearby" Toph added through her stance did not change. The Avatar and his gang stared off with the Firenation princess for some time before she decided it was her chance to defuse the situation a little.
"That's because it really is just me" she repeated her point, her voice carrying an air of wit and humour designed to berate the group for making her repeat herself. The attempt at humour did little to calm them.
"Why would you come alone?" the Avatar questioned, his voice more sinister than she remembered it ever being before. Perhaps her victory over him in Ba Sing Se had had a greater effect on him than she realised. She could not help a smirk from forming on her lips at the thought. She was quite proud of her ability to best the Avatar, though now was probably not the time to boast.
"Well, to be honest, I didn't really have much of a choice" she tested the water and it seemed she had their interest. She noticed their muscles relax slightly and in good faith she did the same, retreating into a normal standing position.
"Go on..." the Avatar encouraged his voice still tainted with the slightest hint of venom. Though she decided not to make it that easy for him.
"Oh, but that is a long story and it has been a long couple of days tracking you down. Perhaps I would be more inclined to tell you all about it after a good night's sleep and a small meal?" She attempted again to add an air of wit to her comment but it sounded more like she was mocking them than anything close to good humour.
"You're joking!" The watertribe boy, Sokka she remembered, began "Why would we let you anywhere near us? Why would we let you eat our food!" He emphasised "food" with an extended syllable that showed his specific grievance with the prospect.
"Start talking little-miss-psycho or I am going to throw you off the building" the treat came from the blind earthbender. Azula was fully aware that it was not an empty threat yet she couldn't help herself from being more annoyed than scared. How dare she call her names! No one had ever dared cross her before. Taking in a few large breaths to calm herself, she decided to get it over with. She would start with something that would hook their attention.
"My father, Fire Lord Ozai...is dead" the statement left them in stunned silence, the Avatar and the waterbender in particular, let their mouths drop as if they were going to reach the floor. Realising she had their undivided attention and that they were in a state of shock she saw an opportunity to go on the offensive.
"My Brother, now Fire Lord Zuko..." she spat out Zuko's name and new title like it was an insult not attempting to hide her malice in any way shape or form "assumed the throne immediately afterwards and ordered my arrest, I only narrowly escaped. Having nowhere to go, being a fugitive and all, I decided to come here. To the only people, I know that can help me."
"How do you think we can help you?" Katara, the waterbender, scoffed at her, leaving no small amount of venom in her own voice. She was actually impressed.
"Simple, I need a Fire Lord killed, I hear that you guys are the experts." She allows her nonchalant, typical calmness to return to her voice as to reassert control of the situation.
"And put you on the throne?" Aang laughed a very ungenuine laugh "you're delusional if you think we would do that." She knew she was about to be dismissed and acted quickly.
"Your mission is to defeat the Fire Nation, not send it into destruction and chaos right?" she began to lay out her argument with only the slightest hint a commanding tone. "If you want there to be peace you need a Fire Lord to take the place of the previous one, to take control in the time of turmoil immediately following the end of the war. I'm your girl" she asserted putting on a bit of an optimistic, upward beat while pointing to herself proudly.
"I trust Zuko a lot more than I trust you! At the very least he has never been as cruel to us as you have. Why would we replace him with you even if we could?" Katara interjects and the Avatar starts nodding in agreement. "Maybe we should capture you and send you back to your brother as a peace offering?" it was a threat that she hadn't been expecting and a dangerous question for her that was now put forward to the rest of the Avatar's group. Thinking quickly she began to sow seeds of doubt in the minds of the group.
"Zuko won't betray his nation, even if he decides to stop the war, and that's a big 'if', he won't simply dismantle the empire. He won't give up the colonies and he won't free the people of the Earth Kingdom from Fire Nation rule. So long as this is the case the army will continue to squash rebellions, burn down villages and kill people." having said her peace the waterbender interjects once more.
"And you would? Would you dismantle the colonies, end the empire and stop the violence? Would you give up the chance to rule the world?" Her voice was full of what was scepticism at best and sarcasm at worst.
"If that's what it takes to get the throne back" a silence comes over the group of teenagers as they begin to think through Azula's proposal. The group exchange awkward glances until finally, the Avatar speaks out.
"We cannot trust you, if you do want to work with us, and if what your saying is true...we will need time to verify your story."
"Until then, twinkle toes, we need to keep her secure" the earthbender interjects. Great.
