1 October 1914
Elsa sighed heavily as she studied the situation map on the progress of the war. Arendelle troops were thin on the front, but they were represented. The problem was that the French and their Allies were pushing back every bit as hard as the Centrists were. If something didn't change soon, it was going to deadlock. And the first winter of the war was getting ready to kick off.
Moana was looking at the same map, along with the chief Intelligence officer, Loa Tai. Elsa glared at the map, seemingly trying to will the parchment to give up the enemy battle plans, but with no results. Finally, she sighed and turned to the map on the wall behind her that, instead of the European Theater, showed the Pacific Theater of Operations. The Japanese Imperial Navy was pushing hard into her waters, as well as the German, British, and Dutch. Honestly, if it wasn't for the Arendelle Imperial Navy, things would be dicier in those waters. So far, thankfully, there had been no land invasions.
Elsa knew the reason for that. The Imperial Chinese Army was resisting the Japanese, right alongside the Royal Russian Army. Neither nation had had much of a navy in the Pacific, so Elsa's fleets were the only real threat to the Japanese invasions on the mainland, and Elsa was using every trick in her arsenal to prop up the Chinese government. It irked the Brits a bit that she was helping keep Bejing afloat, but they weren't arguing with her results. Not when the Chinese were busy keeping the French in Indochina busy as well as the Japanese.
Honestly, she shouldn't be so worried about the Pacific Theater, except that was her true home, hers and Moana's. And any threat to the various island chains was too close for comfort. The only reason she kept such a huge naval presence in the Pacific even with the need for ships in the Atlantic was that no one knew when or if the United States was going to jump into things. For right now, the US was keeping to themselves and preaching a isolationist policy. Who knew if that would hold.
And on still a third wall was the African Theater map. Elsa had little cause to look at that one. The French weren't even trying to invade out of their African colonies. And frankly, neither were the Germans or British. For the Centrists, they'd have to go north into some of the most worthless desert on the planet. For the Allies, they'd have to go south into some of the most dangerous jungles and savannas. Frankly, both sides had given orders to just guard the borders. Which was fine by Elsa.
Elsa sighed and looked at her Intelligence officer. “Still nothing?”
“I am afraid not, Empress. There has been no movement that would suggest demonic activity. Right now, both sides are still trying to gain advantages, and it is just one bloody stalemate everywhere. Right now, our spies are about looking for information that will be of importance to our efforts, but we haven't heard anything substantial yet,” Loa Tai explained.
“Island Lilly, we couldn't do anything right now anyway. We are still being trained,” Moana offered.
Elsa was about to agree when another officer, a palace guard, entered the room. “My Empress, you have an unscheduled visitor. A Ms. Helga Sinclair. She says she is operating on the behalf of a Mr. Whitmore.”
“Escort her to the salon, Fritz. We'll be along in a minute,” Elsa ordered and Moana nodded.
The guard left and Elsa turned back to the maps. “Alright, if anything breaks anywhere, let me know. I don't like that our allies are surrounded by so many large powers, but we are going to help them in any way we can. Even if that means taking on mundane espionage missions, Loa Tai.”
“Yes Ma'am. I am sorry I called you in here with nothing urgent on the table, particularly on your day off from the training you were under,” Loa Tai offered sympathetically.
Elsa just smiled and patted the woman on the shoulder. The fact that Arendelle routinely made use of female soldiers was a novelty among the armies and navies of the world. It also had met resistance from the die-hards, but Elsa had frozen each of them solid with her cold logic on why Arendelle would indeed be accepting and recruiting women into military service. And so far, it had paid off in spades. It just meant that when the odd pregnancy cropped up, which did happen, though thankfully rare, it had required the invention of Maternity Leave for the soldier in question. However, most of the women in the service were more careful about that kind of thing.
And of course, with Arendelle's monarchs being a pair of what were called lizzies, or a lesbian couple, the laws had also decreed that same sex couples were allowed in every branch of the service. That one had been easy to get through in Arendelle, with most of it's pagan population being open to the ideas of other forms of relationships, even polygamous relationships. It had been her allies that had been resistant to accepting gay and lesbian couples into the lines or other services. However, Elsa had used her clout to push it through despite the Victorian puritanical attitude. That didn't keep the odd disputes in the encampments from happening, but for the moment the hard liners were being shouted down by everyone else.
Elsa sighed and looked at Moana, “Yeah, I know Loa Tai. We'd have loved to spend today in each other's arms, if not with me all trussed up, but the war is more important, and the fact that the line is beginning to stalemate is important news indeed. That Eastern Front is worrisome though. We've never really been on great terms with the Russians, but Czar Nicolas and I have sat across the table often enough that we respect each other. In fact, I want you to get as many agents into Russia as we can. I want to know what is going on with them at all times.”
“Something about the Russians bugging you, your majesty?” Loa Tai asked seriously.
“Yeah. You remember that report two weeks ago about the general discontent within Russia about the war and how the government is run?” Elsa asked in return.
“As clearly as you seem to, but I fail to see what that has to do with anything,” Loa Tai cocked an eyebrow.
“You weren't around for the shit storm of 1848 and the follow-ons. And frankly, the Marxist rhetoric worries me. If, and I mean if, gods forbid, something happens, I want us ready to assist Czar Nicolas in any way we can. That includes extracting him from his own country, if we can't pin the rebellion down. The last thing we need is a country the size of Russia going Marxist. I have read his works, and while he had some good ideas, most of it would work only on paper. It is a recipe for disaster,” Elsa mused.
“Even if he is currently an enemy?” Loa Tai respectfully reminded Elsa.
“Yes, even if he is currently our enemy. Having the Czar owe us a favor would be only to our benefit. And yes, I know a destabilizing civil war within Russia would likely knock them out of the war and free up that front, but as I said, we don't need a Marxist nation so close at hand, and not Russia's size,” Elsa explained.
Rather than respond, Loa Tai saluted as Elsa and Moana turned to leave the war room of the palace of Arendelle. Honestly, as comfortable and memorable as the palace was, Elsa was considering moving it to a new structure that was more modernized and updateble than the current palace. They could turn this old castle into a museum and that would be perfectly alright by Elsa. She and Moana had actually discussed that fact just a few days ago while on lunch break in their training for their coming missions.
The pair entered the salon and Helga immediately stood up from a chair next to the fireplace. Elsa smiled gently and waved her back to her seat. The comfortably furnished room was the couple's personal space that was rarely used for official meetings. Which meant that there was a sharp contrast between Pacific Island décor and local décor. Helga seemed to have chosen one of the local chairs across from the two island chairs Elsa and Moana preferred.
Elsa and Moana took their seats and smiled gently at Helga, who seemed to be wearing her serious face this time. Elsa could almost feel the sternness of the woman coming off in waves. Still, she was determined to get the woman to let her hair down a little. So, Elsa smiled and gestured at the fire.
“Even if I can't feel the heat from it, nor am I affected by it, I still find something comforting about a nice fire on the hearth. Don't you agree, Ms. Helga?” Elsa opened.
“I am sorry, but I must be brief, Empress Elsa. I have a flight back to DC leaving in a few hours,” Helga explained.
“Plenty of time for us to have a small chat, Helga. The air port is rather close. What brings you to Arendelle today?” Elsa asked.
“I am actually here to see if you would reconsider our request for you to join the expedition. We could really use your help. And the launch date has been moved up. Apparently, Mr. Whitmore underestimated how soon Thatch would be available. He is making contact with the boy right this moment in DC, in fact. And our time table for the mission is only a month to three at most. If we don't find anything before then, we'll return to the surface through the most expedient means possible. Surely, the war won't be over before January, and it is unlikely the two of you could possibly change it without, say, freezing all of Europe in ice and demanding everyone negotiate fairly,” Helga smirked.
“I am actually glad you requested it again. We were just about to wrap up our training with the Intelligence branch, and we have yet to find even one thing to battle at this point. Elsa would probably have balked, but I am eager to go and explore the unknown, particularly this mysterious Atlantis everyone has told me about. And to ease your concerns, Elsa has the power to freeze an island nation the size of Arendelle, but not all of Europe,” Moana's tone was wry.
Elsa elbowed her wife. She then turned back to Helga. “Actually, as long as we are on the topic of the mission to Atlantis, I wanted to talk to you personally, Helga. Last time you were here, you seemed a bit out of sorts when it came to my terms for support. I hate to put you on the spot, but I need to know what those concerns were.”
Helga actually looked uncomfortable again. “I assure you, Empress Elsa, there are no concerns. We can meet your requirements easily.”
“Helga, please don't give me the canned lie. What is wrong?” Elsa demanded.
“Empress Elsa...” Helga started.
“Just Elsa is fine. No need for titles right now. And Helga, just give it to me straight. Was Mr. Whitmore less than honest with us?”
“It isn't Mr. Whitmore. He doesn't know and meant every word. It is Commander Rourke. He has been getting more and more obsessed with finding and securing the crystal depicted in the page he tore from the Shepherd's Journal. And he agreed to give me a full percentage of the take on it, and as he is my commanding officer, going against him rubs against the grain,” Helga sighed.
“I see. Helga, would he violate the terms of the contract for his own gain?” Elsa asked quietly.
“Absolutely. He wouldn't care how many bodies he had to create, even of his own men. The man is absolutely ruthless when it comes to money. Frankly, I think he'd betray his offer to me if he thought he could get away with it. But his offer is intensely tempting, and he has deals with all the other key members of the expedition, too,” Helga explained unhappily.
“Helga, how can you serve a man like that?” Moana asked sympathetically.
“He wasn't so bad at first. And he has paid us all well for the jobs we have done. But then he changed when he saw that damned page. And he keeps it on him at all times,” Helga's bitter anger was evident.
“That wasn't entirely what I meant. I meant how can you serve a man like that?” Moana pressed, stressing the word.
Helga flinched. “Am I that obvious?”
“Our reading of people has been our greatest asset for our whole lives, Helga. And keep in mind, we are both women, and married together. We recognize a fellow lizzie when we see one,” Moana offered sympathetically again.
“What my wife is trying to say is, we won't betray your secret. But when this mission is done, however it ends, we were wondering if you'd come and work for us?” Elsa offered.
“That, um, is generous of you, and indeed I am tempted. Arendelle's reputation for not only being tolerant of, but supporting people of alternative sexuality is something I have paid close attention to. If I wasn't on the move so much with the company, I'd thought about immigrating more than once. Well, to either you or Corona. Though Arendelle is first on my list.
“As for the job, what exactly are you offering?” Helga asked seriously.
“Work for us as a special operations officer. You'd be working directly for Moana and I, and likely right beside us as we identify and take down the various entities that are causing this war. We still remember that it wasn't us, or any other powerful being, that took down Hans. It was my merely mortal cousin and sister that did it. The two of them shot him through his demonic armor, with weapons that weren't even rifled. Some creatures can't be dealt with like that, but some of them can, and are out of our ability to fight. However, if you were there, and knew the difference, then you might tip the scales in our favor.
“That is the kind of work we are offering. Adventures you'll never imagine or get the chance to be on if all you do is work as a mercenary for the highest bidder. Though, we'd still pay you well for your service. What do you say, Helga?” Elsa purred.
Helga leaned back in her chair and looked like she was considering something. Finally, she looked up at the two demigoddesses and smiled. There was even a subtle blush on her cheeks, Elsa and Moana both noted. Elsa knew instantly, before Helga even spoke, they had her on the hook.
“Alright, when the mission is done, that sounds like it would be right up my alley. However, I'll ask again, would the two of you consent to join the mission? It'd be nice to have someone I could relate to there,” Helga admitted.
“Done. We're on. We'll just have to go and inform people before we all leave. Oh, and I don't know what your flight was, but we have our own personal air craft that we use to get around when necessary. And as zeppelins go, it is quite comfortable and fast. We'll be in DC for the launch with plenty of time to spare. So, we'll see you are reimbursed for your ticket, because you are coming with us!” Elsa agreed and demanded.
“And one more thing, Helga. Elsa and I want to admit that we find you rather attractive, and would love to spend time getting to know you. However, if that makes things too awkward, then we'll keep our distance from the subject,” Moana purred.
Helga coughed and her cheeks went bright red, which made both Moana and Elsa giggle. “Um, I don't mind. We'd just have to keep it quiet, you know, because not everyone is like the people here in Arendelle or over in Corona where it is accepted,” Helga stammered.
Elsa smiled wickedly, “Oh, we can do quiet, but we prefer it when they are loud and noisy!”
Helga sputtered then at the obvious meaning behind Elsa's words. Moana and Elsa laughed and smiled at Helga. “Don't worry, unless you want it, no one will force anything on you. Elsa and I are quite big on the topic of consent. Though, we are still working on Elsa's knowing when to use a safe word when I got her all tied up!”
Helga's blush deepened even further, “You two are, um, rather open and forward about those things, aren't you?”
“No better way to be, Helga! If you like something enough, then I say fuck what the world says, and just be out and loud about it. Take pride in things you enjoy!” Elsa boasted.
Helga put her head in her hands and started laughing. Elsa and Moana laughed with her as the tension in the room disappeared at last. Finally, they stopped laughing long enough for Elsa to end the meeting and while Helga waited, Elsa and Moana hurried to find the Palace steward. They told him to fetch the Prime Minister on the phone immediately. He nodded and hurried off as Elsa and Moana hurried to their chambers and pulled out their suitcases.
They stuffed mostly the vibrantly colored floral skirts they wore in the Pacific Islands into the suit cases along with their cold weather gear. They were still packing when the phone in the room rang. The Prime Minister was on the line. Elsa gave a brief run down of what was going on, gave her orders for Bridget to be put on the throne while they were gone, and that the Royal Zeppelin was to be readied. The Prime Minister all but demanded they take care while on their journey, and Elsa could almost hear his sigh of relief. Ever since the meeting back in July, he'd been on them about taking some time to enjoy themselves.
The last things they grabbed were their magical weapons and then they hurried out to find Helga waiting in the foyer. They said their farewells to the staff and then hurried out into the early morning light. At the end of the long stone bridge, they came to a waiting car and all loaded their things and piled in. Elsa gave the order to head to the air port where the Royal Zeppelin was waiting. The short drive was comfortable and the three women chatted easily.
Finally they arrived and found the Royal Zeppelin waiting with the boarding ramp already lowered. Stewards came out and took command of everything except the fabulous shark tooth spear and obsidian sword that were Moana and Elsa's battle weapons. The trio of women hurried up the ramp and found seats in the main salon of the passenger section of the Zeppelin. Elsa smiled at all the people rushing about and made a mental note to express her apologies for making them all have to panic like this. Still, it was for a good cause, and Moana, Elsa, and even Helga found themselves looking forward to what would come next.
7 October 1914
Elsa stood next to the railing as the submersibles were being lowered into the water. The giant submarine was supposed to be one of four, but Elsa's ship yards had yet to be able to recreate the fabulous sub or it's smaller parasites. Elsa had asked Mr. Whitmore, who had come along aboard the ship to wish everyone luck, where he had built them. Mr. Whitmore had smiled and said it was a secret. Elsa had tried to pry, but he'd resisted effortlessly. Still it was a stirring sight.
Elsa sighed as she looked down into the ocean below the catwalk. And much to everyone's surprise, and shouts of alarm, a large column of water began to rise up out of the moon pool. Elsa noted that some were looking afraid while others seemed to be in wonder. They were still hours from launch, but things were being prepared all the same.
While everyone looked on, Moana came up next to Elsa and both of them bowed to Tangaroa. The water returned the bow and then to everyone's even greater surprise, it spoke. “You walk into needless danger.”
“Tangaroa, we have been wanting to see this since we were told of it. And it won't take up so much of our time as we once thought,” Elsa explained.
“No, not what I meant Elsa. There are some things that should not be pursued. The Atlantians made a mistake and suffered for it. What once happened is on the verge of happening again. And despite my gifts to both of you, neither one of you can breath water. I implore both of you to turn back, though I know neither of you will,” the watery voice of the Ocean God Tangaroa said.
“I am sorry, but we have to see this through,” Moana pressed.
“So be it. I'll do my best to hamper the dangers I can. But somethings that are dangers don't look like them until too late. Be wary,” Tangaroa said as he began to descend back into the moon pool
“Tangaroa! Wait!” Moana called out.
“Yes?” Tangaroa asked, as he came back up to look at them.
“We've met someone new, and were wondering...” Moana started only to have Tangaroa interrupt them.
“I must be able to observe them, Moana. These days, I have to justify it to the other gods, which I find amusing that they think themselves greater than I and capable of such demands. Without me, there is no world for them to rule at all. Still, I agreed to play by their rules, so I must. Which means, I need to get to know this individual you are speaking of. Do not tell me of them, as I will know as I observe. Though, I will not be able to observe where you are going as it is beyond my sight,” Tangaroa chided.
Moana nodded solemnly. “Told you, Elsa.”
“Was there anything else, girls?” Tangaroa asked.
“No, that was it. We'll be as careful as we can though,” Elsa promised.
“Very well. I will be watching, as always,” Tangaroa promised.
The column of water dropped back into the moon pool and Elsa sighed and turned to Moana. She could see Mr. Whitmore, a short lanky man with blonde hair, and a big man with gray hair coming their way. She sighed and gave Moana a nod to look behind her. Moana groaned and turned and looked at the trio of approaching men. She cocked an eyebrow as she studied them.
“Well, Empress Elsa! I'd heard of you two talking to the ocean before, but to see it and hear it talk back, well, by thunder, that is something else all together! Oh, and before I forget, this is Milo Thatch and Commander Rourke! Milo is the cartographer and linguist while Commander Rourke you already know about!” Mr. Whitmore said brightly.
“A pleasure, Mr. Thatch! And Commander Rourke, we have heard much of your contributions to this mission! We sincerely look forward to working with you!” Elsa lied to Commander Rourke, but was genuine with Milo. She held out her hand and Milo took it eagerly. However, Commander Rourke looked at the hand and a nervous look briefly flashed across his face before he smiled politely.
“A pleasure, Empress Elsa! I must decline the handshake though. Personal reasons, you understand,” Commander Rourke was either the best liar Elsa had ever seen, or he was giving her half the truth.
“Very well. I understand! I assume we are all due to head to the sub now, then?” Moana intervened.
“Yes, as it happens. We are almost finished with the loading and ready for launch. Things are moving about as fast as they always do with Mr. Whitmore's projects. Once we are all bunked down, we'll have the briefing aboard the sub. I trust neither of you has changed your mind yet?” Commander Rourke asked.
“No, we are still coming. Let us get our stuff and we'll be on board shortly,” Elsa promised.
Just then the final call for loading came over the intercom and Elsa smiled as the trio waved good bye. Elsa waited until they were out of ear shot in the noisy launch bay, and then motioned for Moana to follow her as they hurried to collect their things. When she was sure that no one could over hear them, she whispered to Moana.
“Keep your eye on Rourke. Something is fishy about him,” Elsa hissed.
“No shit, Island Lilly. I'll watch him closely,” Moana affirmed.
They quickly gathered their things and then hurried aboard the the sub. Once they were on board, the reached their station and braced themselves as the sub descended into the water. The pair went to their cabin, and smiled as they found Helga already there and unloading her own gear. Helga smiled in return, but it was short lived as she finished and hurried out of the cabin. Elsa and Moana took their time to change out of their cold weather clothes, which were bulky, and into their floral skirts, and though it grated on them, they also pulled out floral tops as well. Once they felt back in their real skins again, a call went over the intercom for them to come to the bridge. Both women grabbed their weapons and headed up to the bridge.
Once they got there, they found everyone but Milo waiting on them. Milo was only a minute or two later. Commander Rourke and Helga stood at one end of the group while the others took seats facing a screen. Milo stepped up to the screen and began his speech. As it happened, Elsa was also seated next to a little Puerto Rican girl she only knew from the file as Audrey Ramirez. Elsa giggled at some of the quips coming from the small girl and found she really liked her attitude.
As Milo explained things, Elsa and Moana were attentive, but when the subject of the Leviathan was brought up, Moana raised her hand after Milo expressed a dismissal of the danger it represented. Everyone turned to face her and she sighed.
“Not for nothing, kid, but trust me when I say, don't get your hopes up for just some rock sculpture. Tangaroa said dangers were here, and he doesn't use those terms lightly. More to the point, he expressed fears of us drowning, so my bet is that there is something real and dangerous out there. Tangaroa even made a point of saying that he would try to impede anything that would come at us, but even the ocean can only do so much,” Moana explained.
“Tangaroa?” Milo asked.
“Some call him the God of the Ocean back in the South Pacific. And trust me, he wouldn't give the least shit if everyone on this sub drowned. Really, the only reason he is warning us, is because Moana and I are aboard. We are like his favorite children really. So, he is a bit protective of us,” Elsa sighed.
“Ah, I see. That was the strange column of water you were talking to then, in the moon pool?” Commander Rourke asked, seemingly curious.
“Yes, Commander. He and Te Fiti are Moana' and I's chief gods and we speak to them from time to time, face to face, so to speak. But Tangaroa is kinda like our baby sitter when we are on the ocean. The gods didn't want a repeat of what happened with Maui,” Elsa explained further.
“So, did your god give you any ideas what we would be facing?” Helga asked seriously.
“No, just that it was a real threat. And while I am sure some of you might be thinking that I could just freeze it in place, I can't. My magic doesn't work through any kind of barrier. Moana and I have experimented with the limits of our powers,” Elsa frowned in frustration.
“Alright, then. It is on us to keep alert and be ready for it. I want all sub pods launched immediately and on patrol for anything dangerous. I don't want this sub getting caught by surprise. Meanwhile, we'll keep searching for Mr. Thatch's grease trap entrance,” Commander Rourke ordered.
Elsa and Moana came and stood by Milo as he was pouring over the Shepherd's Journal. They were looking out the front windows when Mrs. Packard called Commander Rourke and Helga over. They spoke for a moment and then she flicked a switch and they could all hear something that sounded metalic echoing out in the water. For the first time in her life, Elsa saw Moana go sheet white. She turned to her wife as she was pointing out the front window.
Elsa called everyone over, and everyone saw a giant metal lobster shaped creature coming straight at them from the side. Commander Rourke and Helga began directing the defense even as Elsa and Moana noted that their speed had increased and the creature seemed to be fighting some kind of impedance.
“Packard, get cookie on the radio and tell him to break out the butter! I want this lobster on a silver platter!” Rourke ordered.
“No! That is no living creature! Tangaroa is changing the currents so we might get away! Follow the currents!” Moana cried.
“You heard the woman!” Helga ordered.
All the sub pods broke off their attack runs just before the metal creature spit a bolt of what looked like lightning or some other form of energy at them. Thankfully it missed, and it continued to be buffeted by multiple currents causing it to loose ground on the sub. Suddenly Milo pointed straight ahead and to a rift with the simple cry of “There!” and the sub angled straight for it.
The subs all dove into the trench and found an under water cave system just barely big enough for the main sub. They plowed through the water at an incredible speed even as more bolts of energy shot after them. Eventually, they left the giant monstrosity behind and finally reached the surface of an underground pool of some kind. As hatches opened and a head count was taken, they found that several of the small sub pods had not made it in with them. The air was somber as everyone took that into account.
It took time to unload everything from the subs, including vehicles designed for the mission. Then came a somber ceremony to remember the fallen. A small candle was placed in an up turned helmet and pushed out to float on the water. Commander Rourke looked around at everyone.
“Seven hours ago, we started this mission with two hundred of the finest men and women I have ever known. We are all that is left. Ladies and gentlemen, I won't sugar coat it. We're in trouble here. But we've been up this particular creek before and always come through it, paddle or no paddle. We still have enough people to man the vehicles but I want everyone pulling their weight. There is no room for slacking now.
“All our hopes now rest with you, Mr. Thatch. You and that little book,” Commander Rourke finished his speech.
Everyone looked at Milo, but Elsa stepped up to him and put a comforting hand on his shoulder. “You can do it,” Elsa reassured him quietly.
Milo swallowed and nodded. Then everyone set about their individual tasks. Moana invited Milo to ride in a truck with her and Audrey. Helga sided up to Elsa, and in no uncertain terms told her that she was riding in the lead of the column with her and Vinny, the demolitions expert. Commander Rourke was providing the rear guard while checking on the supply situation.
Slowly the convoy made it's way into the deep caves. Elsa and Moana marveled at the surroundings. At several points during the long march, jokes were made at Milo's expense by Vinny, Audrey, Sweet, and Mole. Elsa gave them a glare each time that seemed to bounce right off their armor. Still, things progressed, and Elsa and Moana kept talking with Helga the whole way. And each night they camped, Helga invited them to share her tent. It had been awkward the first night when Elsa and Moana revealed they slept naked.
However, the awkwardness quickly fell away as Helga started asking them about their tattoos. Elsa and Moana's miniselves even came alive as Elsa and Moana recounted one story from their tattoo each night, dragging it out. Helga seemed to relax considerably around the pair, and one morning, the pair found Helga snuggled close to Moana. Elsa had smiled at that, but decided not to make a scene over it.
Then one evening, as everyone was gathering around the camp fires, Vinny, Sweet, Audrey, Mole, all called Milo, Elsa, Moana, and even Helga over. The now large group gathered around the camp fire even as Cookie doled out the evening helping of beans. Elsa felt the awkward tension and decided it was up to her to break the ice.
“Well, I see we are all having the same meal tonight,” and with Cookie out of sight or earshot, held out her plate and let it empty into the campfire, producing a small cloud of noxious stink. Everyone smirked and did the same thing. From a pack, Dr. Sweet produced some jerky and passed it around. Elsa and Moana gratefully took it as the conversation picked up. Each of the specialists took turns explaining their personal history, and Elsa smiled at them. Then everyone looked at Elsa and Moana.
“So, we told you our stories, what about you two?” Audrey asked.
“Ours is a long one, Audrey. But you can look in almost any historical text to find out about how we came to be. It hasn't been a well kept secret or anything,” Elsa smirked.
“Yeah, I remember reading about you two in a history book in school. But I was wanting to know the stories you two have from your adventures. The history books don't tell those, just about the war and you two meeting because of it,” Audrey responded.
“First I have to ask, does anyone here have a problem with me taking off my top?” Elsa asked.
Everyone looked at her like she had lost her mind, but she rolled up her sleeve to reveal the tattoos. Finally, everyone just nodded. Elsa sighed and then pulled off her top, letting her heavy and large breast come free. For a moment, everyone was distracted by that, even Helga and Moana, both of whom were used to seeing them now, and Elsa had to snap her fingers for everyone to come back and pay attention to her.
“Alright, look at this one,” and Elsa began going over the story behind each tattoo, even showing off her miniself helping tell the tales by animating each tattoo. In moments everyone forgot her naked breasts as she showed off battles with demons and monsters. Moana was less brazen and merely pulled down the back of her top to reveal the tattoo of her fight with the Kakamora.
Finally, they finished and Elsa put her top back on which seemed to disappoint Helga but everyone else looked relieved. She smiled at them as she spoke, “Well, I am sorry to have to end the show, but those are pretty much everything. Of course, Hans is the big fight we had, but who knows if he is the last one like him. And truth be told, we don't even know if he is dead or not. We just haven't heard anything from him since the battle in 1847.”
“Elsa, how do you even fight something like a lava monster?! I'd turn tail and run from that kind of enemy!” Audrey demanded in wonder.
Elsa smiled at the young woman. “By remembering that any demon or monster can be beaten, if you play it smart and figure out it's weaknesses. Take the story I just told you for example. We had to play around a bit to figure it out, but when we did, it was all but over. Neither I or Moana could hit it with a sustained blast of water or ice, but those definitely hindered it. Theoretically, if we'd been able to, we might have frozen it in stone or killed it outright.”
“What about that big one you said was a goddess or something?” asked Dr. Sweet.
“That is a unique case we'll likely never run into again. Te Ka was not something that normally happens. If Maui hadn't stolen her heart, Te Fiti would have never transformed into that more primal form. And neither us, nor Maui can fully challenge the power of an outright god. Thing is, the best any of us could do would be wound them. And even then, we might be killed in the process,” Moana explained seriously.
“What about plenty of explosives?” Vinny asked, and no one could tell if he was serious or not.
“No, Vinny, mortal explosives would have no effect on a god. The only being that can challenge and kill a god is another god. Even the Asgard follow that rule, though some of the monsters they face in legend were supposedly gods in their own right. Though, my few talks with Odin has disproven that,” Elsa smirked.
“Awe,” Vinny said even as he fiddled with a stick of dynamite.
“And you know, we've worked with you so long, but none of us know your story, Lieutenant?” Audrey asked Helga.
Helga looked awkward as all hells which was new to the group as a whole, given her tough no-nonsense attitude. Still, she took a bite of the jerky and sighed. She looked up at the group and smirked.
“Yeah, well, I don't like to advertise it. Rourke knows it, but I think he is the only one I ever told it to,” Helga tried to dodge.
“Now, now, Helga. Out with it! We are all ears!” Elsa pried.
Helga sighed again, “Fine. My parents are German immigrants. Came from dirt poor roots. I grew up in San Francisco with eight older brothers who were probably the biggest wusses in the city. One was even a cross dresser and damn but he could pull it off. But I decided that if they could flaunt the norm, so could I, and I was damned if anyone was going to be allowed to get away with giving them shit for it. When mom figured out what I was teaching myself to do, she made me join this school run by a Chinese guy who taught me how to fight with kicks and punches. Then my mom, who was ex-military, taught me the fine art of shooting. It was a bit of a chore to hook up with Rourke, but he saw something in me and after I proved myself, he made me an officer. I still check in with my brothers from time to time to make sure they are alright. Most of them are getting tougher these days, what with the war and all.”
“Sounds rough,” Moana said sympathetically.
“It was what it was. And now I am tougher and stronger for it. Probably toughest person in this outfit aside from the Commander,” Helga sighed.
“You know, Lieutenant, you should let your hair down with us more often. I am sure you have stories worth hearing about,” Audrey suggested.
“It isn't proper for an officer to mix with the enlisted,” Helga said sourly.
“Bull shite, Helga. That is a stupid American and British custom. Arendelle found that allowing officers to relax with their troops built rapport with them, and made them stronger units. Within reason, you should feel welcome among your own troops. You aren't their slave driver, just their boss. You all get down into the same mud together,” Elsa stated firmly.
“You know, I like that attitude. Wish some of my officers back in the Army took that point of view. Some of them were more like slave drivers, but I bet if they let their hair down every once in a while, some of the boys'd be more inclined to work with them,” Dr. Sweet agreed.
“Exactly, Sweet. That is why Arendelle doesn't segregate officers and enlisted,” Elsa stated flaty.
“Well, this has all been enlightening, but we really should get some sack time. I just wish that big glowy thing up there would turn off,” Helga stated.
“You and me both, Sister,” Audrey agreed.
The group broke up and each went to their own tents, though Elsa and Moana rejoined Helga in her tent, which was big enough for six people. This time, they pushed their cots together in the center and Helga opted to sleep between Elsa and Moana, and stripped down naked just like them. For the first time in Helga's life, she felt more connected to people than she ever had outside her family.
A group of strangers crept into the camp, determined to learn what they could about the invaders. Their war masks and weapons spoke of proud warriors. Still, they moved with a silence cats would envy. The first tent they came to housed three naked women sleeping together. The one in the middle was embraced by the other two and all of them seemed sound asleep. A quick sweep of the tent revealed little, though they noted the bright and vibrantly colored clothes set aside. Then they found two weapons unlike those they had ever seen.
One appeared to be a long spear made of elaborately carved wood tipped with a wooden head that had some kind of jagged tooth worked into the wood in such a way that made it obvious the weapon was for stabbing and tearing. The runes down the shaft all seemed strange but even they could tell they were for magic of some kind. Then there was the sword with similar runes on it. The wooden spine of the sword was affixed to a bone handle that ended in a claw. Embedded in the spine of the wood was chipped obsidian, and the obsidian seemed to be all one solid piece and fused to the wood instead of held with threads of some kind.
They gently replaced the weapons, recognizing them to be powerful implements and dangerous in the hands of their true wielders. They then moved onto the third pack and found strange garments that resembled most of the explorers' they had been watching for some time. And they found still more weapons, though these were not spears or swords. Instead, they couldn't figure out how the weapon was supposed to work, but at the least it seemed to work as a decent club.
Finally, they exited the tent and moved about the camp. They inspected several tents in succession, finding many of the same things. Then in one tent they came across what they recognized as book, but none of them knew how to read. The man in the cot was asleep, but next to him were a pair of glass disks in some kind of wire frame. Honestly, they pegged him for the group scholar.
Then suddenly the man started stirring and they scattered to watch from the shadows again.
Milo got up and felt the call of nature intensify. He moved to the designated latrine area outside camp with his roll of toilet paper and a flashlight. His mind was so focused on the task at hand, that he never noticed how his flashlight had cast it's beam on the glowing rock formation above. Which meant he didn't notice the glowing bugs slowly descend from it.
Once he did notice, as they were buzzing around him, he swatted at them and smashed one with this toilet paper roll, which instantly burst into flame. The then noted that the bugs were settling on the tents and fires were beginning instantly. He immediately pulled his trousers up and cried out “Fire!”
The cry woke Elsa, Moana, and Helga instantly. They didn't spare a moment's thought for their nude states and instead gathered their belongings and rushed out of the burning tent. The whole camp was in flames and Helga started barking orders. Everyone piled into the trucks and started off across a natural bridge formation. However, the bugs were persistent and pursued them, setting the truck carrying the brunt of the diesel fuel on fire, causing a massive explosion that broke the bridge and cause every truck in front, and the giant mechanical digger to all slide backwards and down, causing a massive pile up and wreck.
After a moment, in pitch black, a single flame ignited and Commander Rourke called out, “Alright, who's not dead! Sound off!”
His reply was mostly a chorus of moans. Finally, lights started coming on and they were able to assess the damages. Then as the damage tally went up, a single voice called out, “Island Lilly! Where are you?”
A quick check also revealed that Helga and Milo were similarly missing. A search began in earnest for the missing trio.
Having been thrown from the bridge some distance from the wrecks by the explosions, the three, who had all been riding in the same truck, slowly came back to consciousness. Helga was the first to awaken to a burning pain in her shoulder. The sight that greeted her was three warriors in huge elaborate masks, all holding strange spears. Next was Milo who also had an injury in his shoulder, those his was a cut instead of a dislocated bone. Finally, Elsa came to and she immediately winced in pain as she realized her arm was broken.
The strange warriors all seemed to note the injuries of the three explorers and that two of them were stark naked. One of them took off her mask, revealing a woman, who was quite beautiful, though with stark white hair, and wearing a blue outfit not unlike Elsa's South Pacific outfit. All three of them leaned back as she reached out and took Elsa by the arm. Elsa screamed in pain as the woman seemed to inspect the injury. Then the woman did something unusual.
From around her neck, she held up a crystal and rubbed it against the skin and then pressed hard on the broken bone, making else scream louder for a moment, then there was a popping sound, and Elsa started panting. However, the pain quickly subsided and her arm no long bent at an awkward angle in a spot that was clearly not a joint. The woman repeated the process on Helga's shoulder, popping the joint back in and then healing it with the crystal. Finally, she applied it to the cut on Milo's shoulder.
Once all three were healed, she moved back, and the three adventurers got a good look at the woman. Then it seemed as though the woman noted the tattoos on Elsa's body. She was leaning in to look at them when a loud rumbling could be heard from behind, which cause the three armed warriors to scatter. Milo was up and after them before Elsa or Helga could react. They chased them through the cavern's with Milo calling after them to wait and talk.
Finally, they exited out onto a ledge in a large open cavern that was full of steam and the sound of rushing water. Elsa, Helga, and Milo all stepped up and stared in wonder at the large ruined city across a rope bridge. From behind them, the three heard, but didn't register the sound of the digger breaking through the wall of stone from which the three had emerged. The finally registered that the rest of the crew had caught up when each member of the team, including a stark naked Moana all came and stood staring in wonder at the same sight.
They all turned back around to go back to the trucks when a group of about ten of the warriors dropped down and faced them from behind their oversized masks. The one in the center stood up straight and began speaking in a strange language that none of them knew. Milo stepped forward and began trying to communicate, though it was obvious he was having trouble. Elsa was listening too, and she noted the moment that Milo and the strange woman were beginning to rotate through languages. So she played a hunch.
“Do you speak Tahitian?” Elsa asked in the language.
The woman stopped, pulled back the mask and gave Elsa a hard look. Her confusion was evident and Elsa nodded to herself. Tahitian had developed in isolation, independent of any base language, or at least that was what Elsa understood. And from the way the others were achieving communication, she decided to try another, even as Rourke seemed about to ask a question.
“Do you speak this language?” Elsa asked in Norwegian.
“Yes, I do! What was that other language?” the woman returned in Norwegian.
Milo looked at Elsa in confusion, so Elsa decided to take the language back to English, even if her accent came through as clearly as it did, though it hadn't been a problem until now.
“It is called Tahitian. A language from the South Pacific. One of two languages in my country,” Elsa offered.
“And the other is Norwegian, yes?” the woman returned.
“Yes. Who are you people?” Elsa demanded.
“We are the people of Atlantis! Welcome to our city!” the woman gestured at the city beyond. “Though, you might want to cover up first, before entering.”
Elsa nodded and then grabbed a stern looking Helga and a bemused Moana and dragged them back to the trucks even as the others conversed. Moana indicated the truck with Elsa and her belongings in it, and incidentally Helga's as well. When they all gathered around the trucks, Elsa spoke in a hushed tone.
“They speak any language known in Europe or the Americas. That covers about ninety percent of the languages available to us. However, Moana and I speak Tahitian, which they don't,” Elsa explained.
“Good for the two of you, how does that help us?” Helga asked as Elsa began pulling out floral skirts and tops.
Elsa looked at Helga and smiled and then pulled a third out and handed them to her. “It really doesn't, except that Moana and I can trade information if necessary. Put those on Helga. I think they'll look simply smashing on you.”
“No, I shouldn't be seen in your clothes,” Helga protested.
“Why not? You are one of us now! I mean, just who was it we were cuddling before things went to shit?” Moana smirked.
Helga actually blushed deeply and took the skirt and top. She put them on with a little help from Elsa and Moana and smiled. Elsa stood back and looked at the blonde and smirked. “Now we are three islanders among the savages of Europe and America!”
“Hey, they are just easier to get on than my clothes, that is all. And what do you wear for under garments with these things?” Helga demanded.
“Nothing. It is an easier way to live, if you want my honest opinion. Though, you should know I have a practical reason for having you wear that. It is hot and humid in there, and you'll appreciate the comfort the skirt and top provide. Though, Moana and I tend to go naked or with just the skirt when we are in the South Pacific,” Elsa explained.
Helga just nodded and then reached in and pulled out a pair of boots, which Moana snatched from her hand and smirked, “Barefoot. You get used to it. Also, you develop calluses. But it is better, trust us.”
Helga sighed and then smirked. “And is there anything else I should be wearing or not wearing?”
“Nope. Though, I think some blue oyster shells in a necklace would set off your eyes wonderfully. I'd keep your weapon handy though,” Elsa suddenly went serious.
“Right,” Helga agreed as she pulled her gun belt out and put it around her waist.
The three then found that the others were already loading up into the trucks and Helga was called to the lead truck alongside Milo and Rourke. Elsa nodded in understanding from the look Helga gave her and then went to her own truck.
Helga rode in the lead truck with Rourke and Milo as Milo was going off all about the Atlantian language. She smirked as she looked at Rourke. “Someone is sure excited.”
“Like a kid at Christmas!” Rourke agreed.
“Sir, there weren't supposed to be any people. This changes everything,” Helga pointed out.
“This changes nothing. Best you remember that. I know you are getting real chummy with Elsa and her bitch, but remember who you work for, Lieutenant. And when you get a chance, get back into uniform. That savage stuff is fine for now, I know we didn't have time for you to dress properly, but once we get the chance, get changed,” Rourke ordered.
“Yes, sir,” Helga said sourly as the truck rolled forward.
Eventually the whole convoy reached the city proper and everyone got out. Helga spared a sour look to Elsa and Moana and Elsa turned to her smaller wife and spoke in Tahitian. “Helga is worried. This isn't good. We need to keep her close.”
“No, we need to keep our eye on Thatch. I have a bad feeling about this, and something tells me we need to stay close to him. Everything seems to be revolving around him, and I know Rourke is going to ambush him at some point. We just need to be sure we are there to intercept. How are your ice powers?” Moana retorted as the group climbed up some steps to a large building they were all thinking might be some kind of government structure.
“I am at full power, interestingly enough. What about you?” Elsa returned.
“Full power. I hope we don't have a fight break out with all these guns here,” Moana agreed.
“Agreed. For now, let's continue to play along like Helga is,” Elsa suggested.
Moana just nodded as they entered the throne room and the woman knelt before a man on what looked like a couch of some kind. They began conversing in native Atlantian and from the looks of things, Elsa guessed it was going bad by the tone of voice and body language. Finally, Rourke stepped up and tried to be diplomatic, but he was rebuffed by the king. He did manage to get an agreement to allow the expedition to remain one day to rest and resupply.
They all left the throne room and headed out. While everyone was standing around, Milo began informing everyone what had passed between what he confirmed to be the princess and her father. Then Rourke came out with a suggestion of getting closer to the princess, and suggested Milo do it, or rather ordered him to. Elsa smirked, as she was reading where this was going.
“Commander, perhaps it would be best if Mr. Thatch had an escort. Empresses Elsa and Moana perhaps? I mean, they are already royalty, and might be able to strike a better accord than just Mr. Thatch,” Helga suggested before Elsa good.
“Indeed! How about it your majesties? Think you can get it out of her?” Commander Rourke actually smirked as he spoke.
“Oh, I think we can help Mr. Thatch get that information. But the question is, what will you be doing?” Elsa asked sweetly.
“We'll go back and see what we need so that we can get it. As per our contract, if they really don't want us here, we'll leave them be, however disappointing that would be,” Rourke responded sweetly. Again, Elsa knew it was a lie, but she would be damned if she could have told it from reading him if she hadn't already been warned by Helga.
“Very well, Commander. I think we agree on that point,” Elsa responded sweetly, and she and Moana smiled at him.
Elsa, Milo, and Moana were waiting when the princess came out of the palace. Only, to their surprise, she knew they were there, and ambushed them. “You are not leaving this city until you help me with something!” she demanded.
“Oh, I think that is quite alright,” Elsa returned in English.
The princess moved through the city then, leading the group to see the city. Elsa and Moana were caught up in the strangeness of the architecture and design work of the city and it's buildings. Milo was constantly talking with her and Elsa listened intently as they moved about. The princess spoke of how her civilization had survived, but was actually dying. Finally, Elsa had had enough listening and butted in.
“I am sorry, miss, but we never got your name?” Elsa's tone turned the statement into a question.
“I am Kidagakash Nedakh, and you all are?” Kida returned.
Elsa smirked as they walked along, “Perhaps you can shorten that to something our tongues can handle? For example, my name is simply Elsa, and this is my wife Moana, and this is Milo Thatch.”
The princess chuckled, “Kida. And it is a pleasure to meet all of you. Tell me, Mr. Thatch, you a scholar, are you not?”
“Uh, yeah, I am,” Milo responded.
“I have so many questions for all of you!” Kida suddenly blurted out. “For example, when did the flood waters recede, when did you...” she stopped as Elsa held up a hand.
“Whoa there Kida! I know you have questions for us, so perhaps we should work it where you ask one question, and then we ask one question, and so forth,” Elsa suggested with a wry grin.
“Fine. First question. How did you all find this place?” Kida demanded as they stood next to a column.
“With this journal,” Milo answered and then handed the book to Kida.
Kida took the book and opened it even as Milo began going into his question. Elsa saw the confusion and then something else cross Kida's face, something she thought might be excitement and disappointment intertwined.
“You can read this?” Kida demanded interrupting Milo.
“Yeah, yeah! Same as you, I can read Atlantian. You can't, can you?” Milo looked at Elsa as Kida stared hard at the book.
“Kida, perhaps you need to explain,” Moana asked gently.
“We have lost much of ourselves. We don't even know how to read anymore. But you can! Come, I must show you something!” Kida said as she led the group down a lane.
“Kida, just how long have you been alive?” Moana asked suddenly.
“Since before the mabaemok,” Kida responded.
“The great flood?! That was over eight thousand years ago!” Milo blurted.
“Yes?” Kida cocked an eyebrow.
“Hey, looking good...” Milo tried to back pedal awkwardly.
“Kida, you know that is far longer than any normal mortal human lives, right?” Elsa demanded as they walked along.
“It is? How many centuries do humans on the surface live then?” Kida asked.
“One, if they are extremely lucky. Most don't even make it half that,” Elsa replied flatly.
Kida seemed to stare at Elsa before she nodded and simply picked up the pace. They traveled into what looked like an abandoned section of the city and Kida pulled the tarp off of some kind of metal shark shaped thing. Everyone looked at it and then back at her. “What is it?” Elsa asked.
“Some kind of vehicle. I have tried everything I could think of, but nothing makes it move. There are instructions on the panel though,” Kida gestured at it.
Milo came over and began reading off the instructions and Kida kept shooting each one down, until it came to the last one and she admitted that one she hadn't done. Milo postured, and Elsa smirked. The boy was sweet on the princess! And they did make a cute couple! Or at least that was the first thought to run through Elsa's mind as Milo took Kida's crystal and inserted it. He followed the instructions and the machine levitated off the ground, coming to life for the first time in millennia.
Kida roughly pressed her hand on the panel and the machine shot forward and collided with a wall. Milo retrieved the crystal even as Kida stared in wonder. Elsa smirked and then stepped forward.
“Was this the great mystery you needed solved?” she asked gently, knowing full well this had just been a test.
“No, but I needed to know if you could do it. You see, when I was just a little girl, when the great flood came, my mother was taken by a bright light, like a star shining above the city, and then the city sank beneath the ocean after a great bubble formed over the city. That is what I want to know about. That light,” there was obvious difficulty in Kida's voice as the memory came slowly.
“I see. How do we help you find that out?” Moana asked.
“I do not see how the two of you can help. It is Milo Thatch that can help,” Kida responded sheepishly.
“Well, we can help in some ways, maybe not with the translations, but there are other ways to help you,” Elsa offered cryptically.
“Alright, all of you, follow me!” and off Kida was again, with Milo, Elsa, and Moana right behind her.
Eventually they came to a flooded section and Kida stopped before the water. “There is a mural here. On it is depicted many writings, and the shining star above the city. That is what I need translated!”
“Alright, let's start with this column... Um, you three, why are you undressing?” Milo stuttered as he finally noted that Elsa, Moana, and Kida were all pulling off their clothes.
“It is a fair swim to the mural. You can swim, can't you?” Kida asked as her top and skirt fell away showing her naked body.
“Oh, I can swim pretty girls, I mean, pretty good!” Milo stuttered.
Elsa rolled her eyes. “Oh, for Te Fiti's sake. Milo, you need some serious seasoning. If a trio of naked women cause you this much trouble, you are in for a world of hurt eventually.”
“What do you mean?” Milo asked.
“It is called the 'human body' and everyone has the same parts. You either get over your morals, or you turn into a truly hateful bigot later in life. And take it from a woman who has been around since the Victorian Era began, turning into a bigot makes you a lesser person for it,” Elsa gave Milo a hard look.
“I am sorry, Empress Elsa,” Milo said meekly.
“Empress Elsa?” Kida suddenly looked at Elsa.
“Just Elsa, please. I never really like titles being hung on me. But yes, I rule the Arendelle Empire. I'd be happy to tell you all about it, Kida, after we have a look at this mural before Mr. Thatch's head explodes.
Kida nodded and dove under the water. Elsa and Moana followed suit and Milo was only a moment later. They swam deep down, following Kida through submerged passages. Finally, they began ascending again and emerged in an air pocket. Milo gasped for breath, but Elsa and Moana were breathing easily.
“You are alright?” Kida asked.
“I've taken waves meaner than that swim!” Moana boasted.
“Good, follow me!” and Kida dove again.
This time they dove deep and Kida used her crystal to light up a mural that was as elaborate as any Elsa had ever seen. Milo instantly set about reading the script that was on it, and then suddenly motioned upward. They all nodded, and they all surfaced in the air pocket again.
“It is a complete history of Atlantis!” Milo's excitement was evident.
“But what about the light I saw?” Kida demanded.
“I don't know, but let's go find out!” and this time it was Milo that dove first.
Elsa and Moana followed along, and their breath was longer than even Kida's could be, but they didn't let on about that fact. Instead, they let Kida work on the Mural, swimming from section to section, until Milo motioned upward again. When they broke the surface again, Milo was a bit subdued. He began to relay how the crystal was what Kida had seen and that it was the Heart of Atlantis and the source of all their powers. Suddenly Elsa had a sinking feeling again. They dove several more times before Milo was finished and they all made the return trip.
Only when they broke the surface, they found Rourke and the others waiting for them. Milo was stunned and was trying to talk, but the thing that Elsa noticed first was that Helga was on her knees, with her hands behind her back, and more than one gun on her. Elsa watched as Rourke helped Milo out of the water and then began trying to make a deal with him. She, Moana, and Kida all swam to the shore where they were pulled out of the water and their arms pinned behind their backs. Rourke failed to get Milo to turn and then he looked at Elsa.
“I do hate it when negotiations break down. Elsa, you need to learn how to lie better. I saw right though you. I am just sorry that you got my most trusted lieutenant to try and lead a mutiny against me. Well, as you can see, no one catches me by surprise. And just for insurance, if you try to use even the smallest amount of your magic, I'll put a bullet in Helga's pretty head. We clear on that?” Rourke said as Milo was the last to be restrained.
“You treacherous sea snake! I'd eat your heart if you had one,” Moana cursed.
“Now now, Empress Moana, that isn't proper. We'll just have to do this the hard way,” Rourke smirked.
“Rourke, you bastard, don't you dare touch them!” Helga snarled.
“Rourke, listen to me. I don't know who you think you are going to sell it to, but I'd pay you better to leave the Heart of Atlantis alone. You don't have to do this,” Elsa tried to play on the man's obvious greed.
“Elsa, give it up. Everyone knows that foundation bull shit won't hold much longer. And yea, you might be rich and give me the money, but there is no fame in leaving the crystal behind! So, no, I am not going back without it. So we are all going to go take a trip up to the palace, where Mr. Thatch is going to translate this page and point us at where the crystal is being kept. Because if he doesn't, there are going to be a lot of bodies until I find it,” Rourke cocked his pistol and pointed it at Kida.
Elsa nodded at Thatch to just play along. The guards collected their clothes from where they'd been discarded, and the three naked women dressed quickly. Milo was similarly quick to dress, though he'd been wearing boxer shorts the whole time. Then they were all forced up to the palace, though the guns on each of them never wavered, and other than Thatch who was translating, none of them were allowed to speak.
When they got there, Vinny blew open the doors and Rourke demanded that the guards stand down or he'd shoot Kida. Elsa snarled as she waited for an opening that didn't come. The soldiers on her and the others never wavered. Helga had to be restrained more than she or Moana though, as she actively fought with them. Finally, Rourke knocked the king from his throne roughly and pointed a gun at the king and demanded he tell them where the heart was, but then his eyes went wide as he realized something. Milo had been saying that the Heart of Atlantis was in the eye of it's king, and it looked like Rourke had puzzled it out.
He, Milo, and one of the guards holding a gun on Kida walked over to the center of the room where Elsa, Helga, and Moana were all compelled to join him by their own guards. As they stood in the center of the room, the floor suddenly shuddered and started dropping. The floor lowered into a cavern beneath the palace where a bright light floated above a lake of water with several giant stone masks floated around it. Rourke demanded Milo tell him how to get it down, but Milo couldn't. Even as Rourke and Milo argued, Elsa watched as Kida was bathed in light and drawn out to the lake. Everyone seemed stunned as she did it, almost like she was in a trance.
Elsa kept eyeing her guards, but they weren't wavering in their attention on their prisoners. Finally, Kida walked out onto the lake and was drawn up into the crystal, only stopping to turn and say something in Atlantian to Milo. Then it was as though the crystal and Kida fused together and became one entity. As the crystal landed on the water, the giant stone masks all started splashing down into the water around her. Milo indicated that no one touch her as she walked past each of them back to the way back to the surface of the palace. However, as she passed Helga, she reached out and placed a hand on the blonde's shoulder and it was as though some kind of energy leaped between them.
Once she was outside, an steel container was built around her by several guards and prepared to be loaded on a truck. Elsa, Moana, Helga, and Milo all stood by helplessly watching as almost every ready gun was pointed right at them. Helga raged, but then calmed and looked at each of the specialists whom she had shared a campfire with just the previous night.
“Well, I guess we see how futile it is for an officer to get to know her troops. Vinny, good luck with the new flower shop. And Audrey, I guess your father and you can open that second garage after all. I can see now that letting my hair down only bought me so much loyalty. It is a sad day that money can do this to people,” there was a bitterness in Helga's voice as she crossed her arms under her floral top Elsa had given her.
“Rourke, I'll be coming for you. You just watch your back. War or no war, I'll hunt you down and see to it you are ended,” Moana hissed.
“Rourke, I am giving you one last chance to reconsider. You do not want me as an enemy. Take my money and then never let me hear of you again, and I'll forgive this that far. If you don't, I don't care how long it takes, or how much money I have to spend, I'll see to it that you are ended, you and every man and woman who follows you in this. And if you think you have felt the cold, then I have news for you, the coldest winter you have ever experienced will seem like a light breeze on a tropical island beach compared to the winter that will come for you,” Elsa threatened.
“Elsa get over yourself. You'll never make it out of here alive, any of you. But maybe as insurance, I should make sure to keep you from doing anything with that magic of yours,” Rourke then gestured at one of his soldiers and they grabbed Helga, only to be slugged in the jaw by Audrey Ramirez. She helped Helga up, her floral skirts swishing about her legs, and then glared at Rourke.
“This is wrong Rourke! And you know it!” Audrey snarled.
The next to join them was Vinny, and he glared at the others. All in all, every one of the specialists joined them, though Packard uttered her usual, “Were all gonna die,” as she did it. Then an even more surprising thing happened and about half of the remaining troops sided with Helga each of them standing firm and dropping their weapons. And Elsa noted that Rourke's side held exactly no women in it's ranks after that point.
“Come on you guys! You pick now of all times to grow a conscience?” Rourke demanded as he stepped out of his truck and walked up to Elsa, Moana, and Helga. “Fine, more for me! But before I go, I just have one last thing to say.” and he slugged Helga in the mouth, knocking her to the ground in her borrowed floral uniform.
Rourke stormed off then and got back in his truck. He started the engine and led the remaining convoy across the bridge. Vinny held Milo back just as he tried to run out and futilely try to stop them. Milo understood why as the bridge exploded. Milo just stood there looking at the ruined bridge.
Elsa moved to help Helga to her feet, but there was a look on Helga's face, like shock and outrage. Even as she stood up, she turned to Elsa and Moana. “That isn't Commander Rourke!” she declared.
“He is a demon disguised as Rourke, isn't he? I had my suspicions from the way he always avoided physical contact with me and Moana. He couldn't have hidden his magic from us,” Elsa guessed.
“Yes. Damnit, it was only a flash, but it was like I could see his true form for a moment when he hit me and right after,” Helga snarled.
“I doubt it is as simple as that. I am willing to bet he is a bonded demon. A demon Rourke made a deal with. Either way, he is another Hans. You were just seeing the demon within,” Moana mused.
“Honey, I hope that isn't the case. Hans almost killed us. I don't want a repeat of that, and remember, Maui isn't here to help,” Elsa sighed.
“Milo, Elsa! You all should get up here, quick!” Dr. Sweet called down from the palace.
Everyone hurried up to the palace where Sweet was packing up his medical kit. “Internal bleeding. There is nothing more I can do,” Sweet said as Milo and Elsa came up. The palace throne room was filled with onlookers as the king of Atlantis spoke quietly to Milo and Elsa.
The king revealed the true nature of the crystal, and how much danger Kida was in for being bonded to it. His final lament was that Kida was all he had and that he had to trust Milo to save her. And Elsa put her hand on the old king's shoulder as he slowly slipped away. The king had handed his crystal to Milo and Milo took it and sat down on a the steps to the throne. Dr. Sweet sighed and closed his medical bag and then looked at Milo.
“So, what's it going to be?” Sweet asked.
“What?” Milo's anger and confusion was evident.
“I followed you in, and I'll follow you out. Your choice,” Dr. Sweet said.
Milo looked up angrily as he felt a hand on his shoulder, and then noted it was Helga. “Milo, you have a choice to make here. Doing the smart thing, like Rourke wants, or doing the right thing. I tried doing the right thing myself, but I didn't play it smart. That is the thing. If you want to do the right thing, we have to play it smart. So make your decision. Either way, I, Elsa, and Moana are going after him. But it would be a lot better if we had you with us.”
Milo seemed to register the sympathetic tone in Helga's voice and then Elsa came up. “I can't read the instructions.” Elsa declared flatly.
Milo nodded in understanding and then stood up, “We've all seen how my decisions went so far. I led a band of plundering Vandals to the greatest treasure in history, thereby resulting in the kidnapping and/or murder of the royal family. And I have let one of the greatest powers in history fall into the hands of a maniac who is likely going to sell it to the Kaiser! Did I miss anything?”
“You also set the camp on fire and dropped us down that big hole,” Dr. Sweet quipped.
Milo threw his hands up in the air and stomped around the room. Elsa picked the journal Milo dropped up off the floor and gently handed it back to Milo. “Milo, if there is one thing I have learned in my long life, it is that we all make bad decisions, and yes, sometimes, they are for the best of intentions. However, all we can do is keep making decisions and hope that eventually we'll learn enough from the bad ones to recognize the good ones when they present themselves.”
Milo seemed to stop and consider those words and then looked at Elsa and nodded. He took the crystal and headed out of the palace. Everyone followed him, and every one of the soldiers began collecting their weapons. Milo looked around and began counting the number of fish shaped vehicles he saw. When he was done, he found everyone looking at him.
“Alright, follow my instructions carefully, and we are all going to need crystals,” Milo said as he climbed up onto a large fish. He read off the instructions and the fish came to life as he demonstrated them. Audrey came up and roughly pressed her hand to the panel and caused the fish to shoot backwards, breaking it.
“Gently, Audrey!” Milo chided.
As Atlantians began bringing fish to life, they began pairing up with soldiers as they were directed by Helga. Elsa had a thought and looked at Milo.
“Milo, the Leviathan had a beam weapon. Do these things have them too?” Elsa asked.
“I don't know, it doesn't say,” Milo returned after reading the instructions again carefully.
Elsa just nodded and then looked at Helga. “Alright Helga, you lead, I'll follow!”
“Mr. Thatch! Are we ready?” Helga called as Milo was doing a last double check of all the flying fish vehicles.
“Yeah, I think so!” Milo called out.
“Alright, then it is on your command, Mr. Thatch!” Helga retored.
“Alright, let's do this! We're going to save the princess, stop Rourke, and save Atlantis! Or we are going to die trying!” Milo said as he led the group of warriors out.
As they were flying across the city, Helga called out, “Alright, we only have a limited supply of ammo and no automatics! Save your shots for when they count! Don't waste your ammo! Elsa, Moana! You two and I will handle Rourke. Everyone else focus on getting the princess free and keeping Rourk's troops too busy to focus on us! Mr. Thatch, the key thing here is to not die trying, so no foolish antics!”
“Understood, Helga!” Elsa called back. There was a similar chorus of agreement that came back from everyone else.
The Atlantians all swooped through the tunnels after crossing the steam and lava moat. Everyone was focused, but Helga had a sinking feeling. She knew exactly what Rourke had to work with, and she was actually worried that even with their crude battle plan, they wouldn't succeed. She spared a look at Elsa who was focusing ahead of her and felt a tinge of regret. Still, she suppressed it and turned her attention to the coming battle and checked her pistol. She winced at having only so many rounds, but she resolved to not waste them.
Finally, they entered a cave that was actually the cauldera of a dormant volcano and saw that Rourke had already inflated the zeppelin and was already lifting the cage with Kida in it up the volcano's shaft. Helga growled as she set eyes on Rourke as she noted him scrambling up the chains onto the zeppelin's gantry.
“Elsa, Moana, we are going to be fighting on that gantry! Be extra careful to not fall off! Or better yet, let me get him off of it before either of you try to fight him! Also, we need to let the helium out of that balloon, but safely!” Helga ordered.
“As you say, Commander Helga!” Moana smirked.
Moana's fish swooped in, dodging ground fire, and made a beeline for the zeppelin. However she had to peel off as multiple rounds of fire came from the gantry as Rourke and several of his troops fired automatic weapons at them. Elsa tried to come in and was repelled similarly. However, Helga held her course even through the bullet storm and leaped from her fish just before it exploded. She and her Atlantian pilot landed on the gantry safely, and Helga drew her pistol even as the Atlantian used his spear.
Helga and the Atlantian made short work of the soldiers, but Rourke seemed to easily dodge even their best shots, causing Helga to waste all her ammo. Helga had a moment to notice that Vinny had discovered that the fish did indeed have weapons and they were quickly using them to decimate the ground forces Rourke had, including a plane launcher. Then her attention was all on Rourke as he had quickly grabbed the spear of the Atlantian and flipped both of them over the side, leaving Helga alone with Rourke.
“Well, well, Lieutenant, looks like we get that showdown you wanted after all! I am going to enjoy killing you!” Rourke sneered.
“Yeah, save it! I work for Empress Elsa now, and you are not going to get away with this!” Helga snarled back as she began swinging and kicking.
Rourke blocked most of her strikes, but Helga could see that he was having a hard time of it. She brought her leg up and he caught it and flipped her over the side, only to have her grab the lower gantry railing and flip back up, bringing both bare feet right up into his face, knocking him backward. It was then Helga heard the ripping sound of something hitting the balloon and she spared a glance upward, just like Rourke, and saw Moana using her shark tooth spear to tear a huge gash in the sides of the zeppelin. They didn't have time to think as suddenly another thump sounded behind Helga and Elsa landed nimbly behind her.
“You know, I consider myself to be an even tempered man, and it takes a lot to get under my skin! But congratulations, you bitches have won the solid gold cupie doll!” and Rourke launched into another attack, only to slip on a patch of ice that Elsa spawned under him. It set him off balance enough that Helga was able to get a solid hit in with her fist, knocking Rourke backwards.
However, Rourke was quick to recover and drew his own pistol, a Colt 1911, and he took aim on Helga's head. He pulled the trigger and then flinched as the bullets sparked off a shield of pure energy that suddenly imposed itself between him and Helga. Helga had instinctively held her hand out in futile defense, but when the shield had appeared, she had been shocked. Rourke roared in rage and came on again, just as quick as before, only this time, Helga grabbed his wrist, dodging to the left and flipped Rourke over the edge, but Rourke had similarly grabbed hold of her and both of them went over the side.
Elsa watched in horror as Helga and Rourke both fell to the ground and landed, safely. Both of them landed on their feet, squatting from the momentum, but otherwise unhurt. Elsa motioned to Moana and her wife came down for the pickup as it was clear the zeppelin was going to crash in full, but not in a spectacular fashion. They hurried to the building confrontation on the ground where Helga faced off against Rourke alone.
Helga was all spin kicks and punches as she pressed Rourke back, forcing him away from where the zeppelin was going to crash. She was desperate to break through his defenses and land a solid hit, but it seemed like Rourke's speed had picked up as well. Helga noted that Thatch and the others were trying to break the chains on Kida's cage even as she battled Rourke, but she had to bend all her focus on Rourke. Finally, she punched out and in her rage she missed, but a bolt of pure energy, like that of the shield or the flying fish beam weapon, shot from her fist. She didn't have a chance to reflect on that as Rourke landed a solid hit on her jaw that sent her back several steps.
“How in Tartarus did you do that, you traitorous bitch?!” Rourke demanded. “And how do you keep standing with everything I throw at you?! You were a mere mortal, not a demigoddess when we started this mission!”
“Fuck if I know, you fucking demon!” Helga snarled as she repeated the energy bolt at Rourke, who while he blocked it, was forced back several feet.
It was then they noted that all of Rourke's troops were down, and the cage was about to be cut free even as the zeppelin was just beginning to touch down. They were being surrounded by the surviving Atlantians and Helga's troops, as well as Milo, Elsa, and Moana. Elsa and Moana had their weapons out and were in their battle stances. Rourke growled and then a wave of energy shot out of him as an inverted light as black as night burst out of him. Elsa, Moana, and Helga all held their feet, but the others were knocked down as they finally beheld the true form of Rourke.
Rourke had transformed into a being seemingly made of gold, wearing diamond armor that resembled Roman armor, and carrying a wicked red and black glowing sword that seemingly radiated vile energies. He opened his eyes and it was like two pits of pure fire glared out at the three warrior women and the snarled. His voice was deeper and more gravelly as he spoke.
“So, you see through me! Fine, then I'll let you all see my true glory! My master will be even more pleased when I tell him I killed three demigoddesses and won him his prize! I am Septimus Auris, Demon of Greed! Remember that name to tell those in the underworld who defeated you!” the demon raged as it charged at Helga.
Again, Helga threw up a shield and sparks flew from it as the demon's sword collided with the energy barrier. Elsa came in from the left and Moana from the right, and their weapons sparked as they hit the demon's armor, doing exactly no damage. Again the demon released a wave of energy, this time knocking all three demigoddesses back, but not off their feet.
The demon roared again, “You can't breach my armor!”
Elsa snarled and then looked at Moana and Helga. “Helga, run block. Moana, when I am done shattering that armor, be ready to melt his gold shell!”
The demon laughed and then charged at Moana, but was intercepted by Helga who threw up another shield, blocking what would have been a wicked strike. Then Elsa threw a gout of ice magic at him, hitting him squarely, and there was a sudden chill in the air. This time, the demon charged at Elsa, only to be blocked yet again by Helga, and he roared in rage and frustration. The demon then turned his entire focus onto Helga.
“Fine, I'll kill you first, traitor!” the demon roared and feigned left but actually struck from the right, only to have his attack blunted by a sudden wall of ice that formed between him and Helga's exposed right side. Helga was up and over the wall in an instant and with an empowered punch straight to the demon's forehead. Elsa followed it up with another shot of pure ice magic that made a musical ringing sound as the demon moved in it's armor.
“Helga, hit the armor!” Elsa cried, and Helga followed it up with a punch straight to the demon's armored chest. The demon tried to block but Helga's shot was too fast and it connected with the frozen diamond, shattering the fragile crystal. The demon roared again and then roared in pain as a gout of flame hot enough to melt rock hit him from behind.
The demon turned and his eyes locked on Moana, but then he lurched forward as a bolt of energy hit him squarely in the back. Elsa, was quick with a follow up attack chop from her sword, having swooped up into the air in eagle form and come down as hard as she could. The blow connected and the demon's head leaped from it's shoulders. The demon's roar of rage was impossible, but still he roared even as his body hit the ground.
“If I am beaten, I'll at least take all of you with me! He roared just before his body exploded, knocking Elsa, Moana, and Helga back again. His body vaporized instantly, and then it was quiet for a moment. Then slowly, as though the gradual building of a crescendo, a rumble could be heard and cracks formed in the rocks spreading outward from where the demon had fallen.
Mole cried, “The volcano! She awakes!” even as everyone scrambled for the flying fish, except Elsa and Helga who grabbed a chain and fastened it to the cage even as Milo took the other end and looped it around a flying fish. However, when they tried to take off, the bracket on the cage snapped and Milo charged back to it and instead just looped the chain around it again.
This time the chain held as the flying fish lifted off and hauled ass. From her fish, Elsa threw ice magic at the building eruption even though she knew it was only buying time. The fish all flew to the plaza outside the palace where Milo took a spear and began trying to pry the cage apart, only to have it suddenly fly apart on him and start swirling around Kida. The entire plaza design and the design work on every building near it suddenly lit up with energy and from beneath the plaza erupted the stone faces of the past kings. They returned to their place around Kida as she lifted into the air and started swirling until they were a pure blur of energy. Even as Elsa was still throwing ice magic at the erupting wall of the cave, trying in vain to slow the lava, beams of energy shot out and lit up what had been thought to be mere statues.
Each of the statues came alive and slowly walked into place around the edge of the city and took up a uniform position. Everyone watched in awe as they clapped their hands together and then an energy shield not unlike Helga's, only writ large, was generated until it fused together into a bubble over the entire city. Elsa stopped her assault on the volcanic wall when the shields appeared and just watched along with everyone else. Finally, the city bubble was covered over by lava and then it was frozen solid by a burst of energy.
Slowly, cracks formed in the lava rock and it broke apart, falling away as the shield disappeared, taking huge chunks of the city platform with it, allowing for greater water flow, which drained the flooded city even further, revealing many submerged buildings and structures. Everyone stared in wonder at the returned city, even as Milo was focused on the slowly descending Kida from the crystal. He grabbed her and held her up even as she came to. She then opened her hand and saw the small silver and pearl bracelet in her palm and winced. She had told Elsa, Moana, and Milo about how her mother had been taken, and they all understood.
It was days later, after everyone had a chance to rest that all good things had to come to an end. Milo and Kida stood side by side as they wished everyone else a farewell. Elsa smiled at the budding couple and then looked back to the Atlantian dolphin sub that they would use to return to the surface. There was a surprising amount of gold and jeweled artifacts that were being loaded, and she made a mental note to make sure everyone, the lowly troopers too, got fair cuts of the money she would be paying out for them. Of course, Elsa fully intended to bury the whole mission and each of the artifacts in the Arendelle vaults immediately upon return to the surface, and old man Whitmore would just have to accept that. The last thing she wanted was another Rourke to find their way down here.
Each of the others bid their farewells, and then it was Elsa, Moana, and Helga's turn. The three each stepped up and smiled at Milo. “You know, you remind me of my oldest brother. Always with your head in a book Milo, but if I learned anything from the two of you, that isn't a bad thing. I regret you won't be coming with us, but I can understand why you are staying. We could always use a linguist,” Helga said sincerely.
“Thanks, Helga. Yeah, I know a good linguist is hard to find. What about the remaining troops? They going to hang with you?” Milo returned.
“Not likely. The company was in Rourke's name and unfortunately, there is a bit of bad blood now that he was exposed. I can't really blame them, but most of them just want to put this whole sordid business behind them. They are all moving on, though most have said they just need some time off to consider things. We've never had this kind of situation or lost so many men before,” Helga sighed.
“And what about you? I mean, is that outfit your new official uniform, or are you going back to being a mercenary?” Milo pressed.
“Well, I kinda like this outfit, but no, I'll be working with Moana and Elsa. They've explained that their mission is to locate and destroy demons like Rourke, and they are willing to have me, so I signed on with them. I mean, I still don't know where these powers, or this tattoo on my back, came from, but they will be of more use helping them, than me trying to form a new mercenary company. So, I'll be around with them for a while,” Helga replied with a smile.
“And how do you feel about them personally?” Kida asked with a wry smile.
“Like this outfit, they seem to fit me well. I don't know where things will go, but I'll be alright finding out,” Helga blushed deeply.
“Good!” Kida said with a smile.
“Now that Helga has said her piece, Moana and I want to wish you well, and let you know, that until you and Kida want me to reveal them, I plan to keep the secret of Atlantis just that, a secret. I don't want another demon trying to find this place and disrupting things again. And next time, you might not have two demigoddesses, and whatever Helga is, here to help you. And I doubt you'd be able to fend off another demon without us.
“That said, if you and Kida decide to bring Atlantis back to the surface, we'll be happy to help you with anything you need. And don't worry, I think we'll be back to visit eventually, but first we have to deal with the war and the demons spurring it along. And no matter what, as far as I and my wife are concerned, we are extending everyone, including you two Milo and Kida, full Arendelle citizenship and protection, regardless of national allegiance. This means that even if anyone is caught in the Allied line, you have Arendelle's protection. POWs would be moved to Arendelle and treated as honored guests. However, I doubt this is ever going to come up,” Elsa explained.
“And one other thing Island Lilly didn't mention. We'd really love it if you two would come back to the surface, even if you leave the city and most of the people here, as a vacation to let us show you the South Pacific. And we'd be happy to teach both of you Tahitian,” Moana offered.
“We'll have to consider that, your majesties. Until then, though, I think we need to get things settled here instead,” Milo agreed.
With that done, Dr. Sweet pulled everyone into a picture in front of the dolphin sub, which was the last one taken in Atlantis. The ride back to the surface was boring and uneventful, and the Leviathan left them alone. They found the support ship right where it was supposed to be, and surfaced inside the moon pool, much to every crew member's, to say nothing of Mr. Whitmore's, surprise. The unloading of everything commenced and Elsa smiled as she explained things to Mr. Whitmore. Mr. Whitmore agreed with the need to keep Atlantis a secret and invited everyone to his mansion in Washington DC.
While everything was being unloaded, Elsa and Moana were standing on the gantry along with Helga when Tangaroa rose up out of the water. Elsa and Moana bowed and Helga mimicked them. Tangaroa seemed to sigh and then, if a water column could, it gave an apologetic look at Elsa and Moana.
“I am sorry to have doubted the two of you. You found a demon on this mission and successfully dealt with it. Well done. And now you two have a new sister,” Tangaroa turned to Helga. “You are now as they are, a demigoddess, though your power source is that of the Atlantian crystal. Hence the color of your tattoo and the reason your powers so resemble the power of the crystal. Your power compliments theirs well, though the other gods are all a little irritated that you have been elevated, but none of them can control the actions of that crystal.”
“I am a demigoddess?” Helga asked in wonder.
“Yes, but I see that you are as Moana and Elsa and will take your new powers and responsibilities seriously. I will wish you all well in your search for the true villain of this piece. Take care of each other,” and then Tangaroa returned to the moon pool.
“Helga, you have got to let us see your tattoos, later,” Elsa demanded and then they all started laughing because they all knew Helga would.
On the trip Elsa and Mr. Whitmore, along with all the others, came up with a plausible story, and began debriefing absolutely everyone involved with the mission on it, and getting the story straight. In that time, Elsa also appraised the treasure and used the ship phone to contact the Foundation in Arendelle to have a check cut immediately.
Meanwhile, the entire crew met in Mr. Whitmore's mansion and reviewed the story, and no one missed the fact that Helga now wore an Arendelle uniform. They reviewed the story one last time, as the entire crew prepared to break apart. Elsa smiled as they went through the various stories about the lost troops and what happened to Rourke. Then she pulled a package out from her purse she carried and walked up to Mr. Whitmore.
“Mr. Whitmore, Milo wanted you to have this. We all got one ourselves, but he felt you would truly appreciate it. He also left you a personal message,” and she handed the package to Mr. Whitmore.
Mr. Whitmore opened it and pulled out a crystal necklace identical to the ones around everyone else's necks. He read the brief message on the picture included and he smiled. He looked up at Elsa and smiled broadly.
“Elsa, thank you. What are you going to do now that this adventure is over?” Mr. Whitmore was obviously stalling for time.
“The three of us are all going to return to Arendelle before things go sideways with the war, and begin looking into ways of detecting demons and monsters. We'll go from there,” Elsa smiled.
“Well, best of luck to you all!” Mr. Whitmore boasted.
Aries was irritated, but not angry. He'd felt the death of Septimus and Aries had also felt how close Septimus had gotten to something he'd felt would please Aries. Aries hoped it had been what he'd wanted most of all. Still, he had other projects, and Septimus was hardly the only greed demon working for the God of War. Of course, there were also monsters working for him, but Aries mostly used them as thugs and shock troops.
Aries watched as the, now three, demigoddesses began their journey back to Arendelle and his irritation rose again. Septimus was one of his least, but even he could have handled one of them, but three simply overwhelmed him. At least he had the demigod Maui under control for now. He really didn't need four of them running around.
However, it was the how of the new demigoddess coming into her power that worried Aries. As far as he knew, none of the other gods had given them to her. And Poseidon was pleading ignorance as to how she'd gotten them as well. Aries honestly didn't believe the ocean god, but the others were accepting his story for now. And Te Fiti and Aphrodite were basically blocking him at every turn in his efforts suss it out clandestinely.
Aries sighed rather than roar in frustration and turned to the wall of his palace. The map of the mortal world was spread out, and he cursed again that Poseidon/Tangaroa had kept the power of Atlantis from him for this long. However, if he worked at it long enough, even the ocean god couldn't keep it a secret forever.
