(Chapter Two: You Can Do Magic)
“I just don’t know what to think about all this. Arrrgh,” Adam says while back in the bed, his head against his knees revealing his inner turmoil.
While on his back beside him and with his hands covering his face, Gaston’s voice is muffled as he replies to him.
“Me and you, both. God! To think I was possibly once some insane, mindless animal who would punch a man’s lights out for loving another man. What kind of world was this?”
Adam lifts his head.
“And that part about us both having been in love with Belle.”
He shakes his head side to side, a mixture of disbelief and revulsion on his face.
“I can’t even imagine myself doing the things to her that I’ve done to you. I’ve never even been with a woman before. At least from what I can recall from this life.”
With his hands now away from his face, Gaston turns to look up at him.
“Why did you keep her company before us?”
Adam freezes at that question as if reflecting on it before his gaze falls on Gaston.
“I think I was in denial—of my feelings for you. And I knew she had feelings for me. I didn’t want to hurt her because I thought she was a really sweet, intelligent and strong girl. I really did. But in the end, I ended up hurting her, anyway—”
They both become quiet for a moment but somehow even in the silence, they still manage to communicate many things.
Gaston knows how much it affected—and still affects Adam—to have had to hurt someone as pure-hearted and idealistic as Belle.
He really did appreciate her as a friend and enjoyed her company but he doesn’t want to say that because he’s afraid it’ll make Gaston insecure.
But it doesn’t.
Well, at least it didn’t before all this new information came up.
There’s just so much fear and uncertainty about the future that this situation is evoking for them.
Adam blows out the breath from his lungs with his hands over his head before he falls back onto the bed.
“I wonder what I was like in this other reality.”
Gaston turns to look at him with a mischievous twinkle in his eyes.
“Definitely more spoiled than you are, now. And your breath probably stunk and you probably had really tiny hands.”
Adam softly chuckles while playfully tapping him on his stomach.
“Stop. Crazy.”
Gaston bursts into laughter at his response.
“So, we were at each other’s throats in that life. And now. Well, we’re still at each other’s throats. Just in a very different way,” Adam says.
Gaston lightheartedly rolls his eyes.
“Yes. Doing things to my neck is your favorite past-time. The only downside is the love marks,” he sighs.
Adam snorts.
“You love it when I leave my love marks on you. Besides, you’re a hot commodity and I have to let all those other wealthy, young, handsome men who repeatedly try to sneak in time with you behind my back, that you’re no longer up for grabs.”
With his arms folded, Gaston cockily smirks, his old self leaking through somewhat.
“Yes. I am a hot commodity and quite sexy too, if I might add.”
Gaston turns to look at him and his former self disappears with the tender, sentimental smile that melts onto his face.
“But you’re even more so.”
They both gaze deeply into each other’s eyes, like soulmates.
Then a memory flashes through Adam’s mind.
Gaston notices the alarm in his eyes before he flies up into a seated position.
With a troubled expression darkening his features, Gaston slowly follows him.
He wraps his arm around his back with his hand on his thigh.
“Honey, what’s wrong!” Gaston says.
Adam painstakingly looks at him and Gaston notices his hesitation to tell him what’s going on along with the spooked energy in his eyes.
But then he manages to push forward.
“I just had this strange memory of holding you over our bedroom terrace. I was in beast form. In this life, I was only awake long enough to behold myself as a monster before the sleeping spell consumed me.”
Adam’s petrified stare at Gaston solidifies what he just said.
Gaston’s grim expression also makes the whole moment even more unnerving.
“A-Adam. That’s the same memory I had, earlier when I thought my mind was playing tricks on me,” Gaston breathes out.
They keep looking at each other before Gaston’s face inches away as his eyes slide down.
“I didn’t want to believe it. I still didn’t believe it, fully, even after all that just happened. But now you’re telling me you have the same memory I do and Belle’s words confirmed it all, too and—”
Adam gasps as Gaston’s face starts to tremble and tears start streaming down his cheeks.
He covers his mouth as more water leaks from his eyes.
“What are we going to do? If the spell is broken, we’ll go back to how we were before. We’ll lose all that we now have. Sersel must have anticipated this before he cursed me. No matter what happens, I lose. How cruel must a person be to do this to someone?” Gaston softly cries.
Adam’s heartache and dread, first for Gaston and then for himself, is viscerally evident upon his face.
Adam attempts to reassure him as he turns and embraces him in a childlike, fragile way.
“Oh, Gaston. This is terrible. I can’t imagine my life without you. But maybe we can retain our memories from both lives, with the spell broken. Maybe we can be together, in the other reality, somehow. But we have to find a way to break the spell. We can’t let Belle live out the rest of her days as Sersel’s mate. You saw what he did to her.”
While Gaston is now embracing him back, his sadness transforms into fury and scorn.
“That bastard! I’ll kill him for hurting my friend! I may have been a horrible person in my other life but I know I wasn’t evil enough to actually put my hands on a woman.”
“I probably wasn’t much better than you were but I have a feeling I wouldn’t have went that far, either.”
Adam releases Gaston before turning forward and appearing to be in a state of contemplation.
“We have to come up with a strategy to get to her and free her.”
Gaston seems to be thinking, as well.
“But even if we do get to her, you saw how he hurled me through the air like a pebble? How are we going to defeat him?”
Adam rubs his lips together before his eyes light up as if he’s just gotten the most fantastic idea, ever.
“Well, even though this reality is more than likely not authentic, I still remember that for the longest time in it, you were trying to master the ability Belle has of blasting energy from her hands. If you could do that now, that would go a long way towards helping us overpower Sersel.”
Gaston shakes his head, in doubt.
“I just don’t see how I could possibly master that skill in such a short period of time. Maybe, I just wasn’t meant to have it. It always seemed like I was more like my father than my grandfather. My grandfather was one of the most powerful Dragon Hunters that ever lived. I just don’t think I could ever live up to that.”
There’s a pause.
“Perhaps, there was something about your grandfather that was different from you and your father,” Adam says.
“What do you mean?” Gaston replies while gazing at him in curiosity.
“Well. Maybe there was something about his personality or beliefs or something else like that which influenced how he harnessed his magical abilities.”
Gaston makes a sound, like he’s considering what Adam is saying.
“Well, my father did always used to say how he despised my grandfather because he was too soft, in his eyes. Watching children playing made him cry. He would feel embarrassed in front of his peers because he hugged him and kissed him on the forehead, way too much.”
Adam is shaking his head up and down and making expressions that reveal his perplexity with why those things are so bad.
Gaston goes on.
“He would always overhear him expressing his feelings to his mother and they were very affectionate in front of him and everyone else. Men neither liked him nor hated him. Everyone else loved him. Except for my father, of course. He vowed to ensure I never ended up ‘a pansy’ like him.”
Adam squints and tilts his head, as a thought comes to him.
“It almost sounds like your grandfather’s ways made your father insecure. Maybe, deep down, he was afraid of his more nurturing, feminine si—wait! I got it!”
Adam flies up, appearing excited as Gaston stares up at him while wondering what’s gotten into him.
“I could be wrong but it can’t hurt to try! I think it was your grandfather’s sensitivity that allowed him to access the deeper elements of his magic. We need to find a way to open you up to that part of yourself!”
Gaston gives him comedically incredulous look.
“But I’m already extremely sensitive. Why do you think I’m with you?” Gaston says.
Adam gives him a smirking look as if silently asking him what he means by that but in a lighthearted way.
“There are plenty men who are with other men and aren’t sensitive, honey,” he says.
“But that man isn’t me, darling,” Gaston counters.
Adam clicks his tongue while subtly rolling his eyes before teasingly and pointedly smiling at him.
“Well, maybe you haven’t reached into that pool, deep enough, baby! I have another idea. My enchanted mirror can reveal anything that’s happened in the past or present, right? So, I say we have it show you a really emotionally devastating time from your life and then have you focus on summoning that awesome magic force locked inside of you.”
Gaston gives him a bland look.
“There’s no magic force locked inside of me, Adam. I already told you that,” he drones.
Adam sighs with gentle exasperation.
“You’re just resisting because you’re afraid we’ll fail, again. But we won’t this time. Trust me on this. Here—”
He stands before gesturing with his hands for him to get up.
“Come on, Gaston. Stop being your usual stubborn self. We have a damsel in distress to save. Come on!” he sweetly encourages him.
Gaston’s eyes do an exasperated dance before he finally drags and hoists himself up from the bed.
“You happy now?” he teasingly smiles at him with his arms away from his sides as if to say, here I am.
“Very,” Adam smiles, appreciatively back at him.
~*~*~
While both dressed in casual attire, Gaston’s full of dark blue and black and Adam’s mostly deep red, they stand before each other in a forest clearing as the sun shines down on them.
As Adam holds out his enchanted, handheld mirror, Gaston peers into it before a scene from his childhood starts to manifest within it.
The boy version of Gaston is following another blonde-haired boy who looks to be about the same age as himself as they converse about different things.
They eventually arrive inside of a barn where beneath them and tucked away in the corner of a semi-enclosed space, is a cage.
The younger Gaston stares at what’s in it, in shock.
It’s like nothing he’s ever seen. It looks human and about the age of a three-year-old little girl, except it has pointy ears, unnaturally white hair and bright blue eyes.
A terror suddenly grips him before he shrieks the word ‘Demon!’ and turns to run away.
The lighter haired boy runs after him as he shouts after him.
Gaston suddenly stops at the door before rotating around to face the other boy who stops as well.
“Where did you find that?” Gaston asks as if he’s seen a ghost.
“You need to return it to wherever you found it. Its parents might come to get it and who knows what they’re capable of or what they’ll do to us, if they realize we’re the ones who took it.”
The blonde boy smiles at him, in a puckish way.
“Well, if I’m going to return it, you should at least go back in there and say goodbye to it first since from the way it was smiling at you, it seems like it likes you.”
Gaston’s frantically waving hands as he takes a few steps back, reveals his terror at the thought of doing that.
“Ungh-ungh, Pasha! I’m not going back in there with that thing! Just take it back where you got it, alright!”
His friend reaches out to grab him as Gaston trips over a rock.
Gaston takes his friend with him as he crashes onto the ground.
They both stare, stunned at each other.
Then something that isn’t supposed to happen, happens.
The blonde boy’s lips close over Gaston’s.
What’s more. Gaston doesn’t attempt to stop him.
They just linger there—in that moment which seems to go on, forever.
“Stop it!”
The sound of a bellowing, male voice causes their lips to fly apart before they leap to their feet.
They stare frozen and with dread in their eyes, at the blonde boy’s father.
Despite their tender ages, they are old enough to know this isn’t going to end well.
In the present, Gaston looks on as that evening in the mirror, his father is screaming at him about what happened, earlier between him and his friend.
Of course, his friend’s father told Gaston’s father what had happened.
Then Gaston pleads and cries after him as his father carries his beloved English Setter out back with a shotgun in his other hand.
“I’m gonna make you into a man, if it’s the last thing I do!” he shouts.
As the gunshots ring through the air and his dog releases a heartbreaking yelp along with several whines, tears begin to burst from Gaston’s eyes.
His sobs aren’t just any sobs. They are bitter. Anguished. Mucus dripping sobs and wails that makes Adam feel as if his heart is shattering into a million pieces for him while he also struggles with guilt and regret over pushing him to do this.
Once Gaston’s emotions calm some, with a determined look in his still watering eyes, he extends his arms and hands out before him while aiming them at a boulder, not too far away.
His lips crumple in on themselves as he feels his fury at what his father did mixing with the torturous heartache, still slicing through him.
He starts to feel his hands tingling.
Then his eyes flutter and the boulder is no longer there.
He starts hectically glancing around.
“What! What happened! He asks.
He wonders why Adam has such a huge grin on his face.
He sweeps in before tightly embracing Gaston as he hoists him off the ground and spins him, at the same time.
“Oh, my God! Gaston! You did it!” he exclaims with glee.
Once he’s put Gaston back down, he stares at him in awe.
“What! Really! But I can’t remember!”
“You must have blacked out.”
Adam points.
“But look over there. The boulder’s gone. These bright blue bolts shot from your hands and turned it into nothing!”
As Gaston deliberately blinks at the place where the boulder was, it finally starts to sink in that it really isn’t there, anymore.
But he still needs to see the bolts surging from his hands before he’s able to fully accept it all.
He notices another boulder not too far away from where the other one was.
He aims his hands at it before focusing as he attempts to reconjure the emotions he just felt.
It isn’t long before energy is blasting from his palms, transforming the boulder into air.
He becomes like a statue and stunned, at the same time.
“Wow. I really can do it. You were right. You were right.”
