Eva groaned as she was woken up by the sound of Beth's beeping alarm clock at 7 in the morning. Eva extended her hand before Beth rushed in and pressed the off button.
"Morning," Beth said, "Sleep well?"
"I slept fine," Eva said sitting up.
The blanket then slipped off to expose Eva's bare chest as she stretched. Beth then grabbed her turquoise robe off the hanger next to the door and handed it to Eva.
"Ummm, thanks?" Eva said taking the robe.
"Sorry," Beth said, "I just didn't expect that you would sleep in the nude. Not that there anything wrong with that, of course; I just-"
"When's breakfast?"
"Oh, I was just about to cook some eggs."
"Alright, I'm gonna do my morning work out before hitting the shower; if that, you know, okay with you."
"Oh of course."
Beth then raced back to the kitchen to prepare breakfast. As she whisked a bowl of eggs, she heard a knock on the door.
"Just a minute!" Beth called as she put the bowl on the counter.
Beth then opened the door and saw her neighbour from downstairs holding his son in one arm and a baby bag in the other.
"Morning, Dan," she said with a smile, "Morning, DJ."
"Hey, Beth," Dan said, "I don't mean to bother you this early-"
"Oh it's no trouble at all, how can I help you?"
"My wife won't be home until 8:00 and I need to go to work. Could you watch DJ until she gets back?"
"Of course."
"Great, thanks."
Dan handed DJ and the baby bag over to Beth before kissing him goodbye. After closing the door, Beth took DJ to the kitchen and placed him in the sink while she continued making breakfast. Just as she placed the eggs on the skillet, Eva walked into the kitchen in Beth's robe, picking some water out of her ear.
"That was a quick shower," Beth said, not taking her eyes off the skillet.
"5 minutes is more than enough..." Eva's voice trailed when she say DJ sitting in the sink, playing with the fossit.
"Oh, this is DJ," Beth said, "He's my neighbor's son. His Mom won't be home for another hour, so he's just gonna hang out here. And don't worry, he's usually very quiet, especially-"
"Isn't DJ the name of that guy who liked animals on Total Drama Island?" Eva asked.
"Uhhh...yeah, but this is a different DJ. His real name's Daniel Fage, jr.."
"...Right, is breakfast ready yet?"
"Just another minute."
"Alright."
As Eva sat down at the table, Beth added some spices and tabasco before placing the eggs on two separate plates. She handed a plate to Eva along with a fork before setting her plate at her seat. She then picked DJ up out of the sink and had him sit n her lap as she took her seat. Beth took a bite out of some eggs before feeding a little to DJ. Beth then looked at Eva, who was really quiet and hardly looked up from her plate. Beth glance at the painting on her wall and thought about starting a conversation.
"So," Beth began, "have you been to Montreal?"
"No," she replied.
"Well, it's actually really nice."
"I'll bet."
Beth then became quiet for a moment before Eva looked at the painting on the wall and asked, "Is that Montreal?"
"Yes," Beth replied, "in fact, that what Montreal looks like from the river side."
"Well, that's a nice painting; who drew it?"
"I did."
"You drew that?"
"Yeah, it took about a week, but it was worth it."
"I didn't know you could draw."
"I also sculpt from scratch."
"Interesting."
After Eva finished her plate, she put it in the sink as Beth followed.
"So," Beth began, "you want me to help wash you clothes? This door-" *points to door across from the refrigerator* "-leads to the basement where the washer and dryer are. If you want I can show you-"
"I know how to wash my clothes," Eva said.
"Well okay then."
Eva then went to Beth's room to pick up her clothes from the floor. She then opened the basement door, but stopped as she saw Beth sitting on the couch with DJ.
"Thank you, though," Eva said.
"You're welcome," Beth replied.
Eva then headed downstairs to wash her clothes as Beth turned on the tv to a kid friendly channel. 8 o'clock eventually came and Beth took DJ back downstairs to be with his Mom. Beth then when back to her residence to clean the dishes, make her bed, shower and change into a new set of clothes. Beth then went to the computer to finish up her homework; by the time she was done, Eva came upstairs with her clothes on and the robe on her arm.
"And, send," Beth said as she sent an email of her completed assignments to her teacher.
"What are you doing?" Eva asked, as she placed the robe on the couch.
"I just finished my homework assignment and sent it to my teacher."
"Okay? Where'd that baby go?"
"I brought him back to his Mom at 8."
"Oh, yeah I forgot."
"Yeah, Nicole works the paper route and usually comes home at 7. She said she the guy who's supposed to give her the newspapers showed up really late and-"
"I gotta hit the gym at noon; if you can drop me off, I'd appreciate."
"Of course."
As they walked out of the apartment, Beth said to Eva, "It's not nice to interrupt people, you know."
"What are you talking about?" Eva said as Beth locked the door behind them.
"I get if you're not that interested in what I have to say, but cutting me off mid-sentence isn't really friendly."
"What do you propose I do? Bore me to sleep."
"Or at the very least, politely say you're not interested."
"I'll keep that in mind."
Beth and Eva then made it to the car and fastened their seatbelts before Beth started the engine. As they drove to the gym, Eva sat quietly as she looked out the window. Beth was about to say something, but then all of a sudden her phone rang. At the first red light, she took her phone out of her pocket and put it on speaker.
"Hello?" Beth answered.
"Hey Beth!" Lindsay answered back, "I got some great news."
"Really?"
"Yes, I was chosen to pose for the latest issue of Mollie Magazine!"
Beth and Lindsay squealed with excited as Eva turned up the volume of her ear buds to maximum, drowning out the irritating noise.
"That is awesome!" Beth exclaimed, "Congratulations!"
"Thanks," Lindsay said, "by the way, how did your night with Eva go?"
"It was...interesting."
"Do tell."
"Well, first we watch Bullets, Bombs and Bob."
"You have that movie?"
"Not on purpose, Duncan and Gwen left it by accident last week. Anyway, after that, we had a discussion of why she overreacts to to the littlest of things."
"Really?"
"Yeah; basically she had this mindset that everyone's a bully."
"What?! That is SO not true."
"That's what I told her."
"What else did you say to her?"
"I told her that I wasn't afraid of her and that I was willing to be her friend."
"...Wait, so you two are friends now?"
"We're working on it."
"Okay, well I'm gonna get ready for the photo shoot. Talk to you later."
"Talk to you later."
"Bye."
"Bye."
Lindsay then hung up, just as Beth and Eva arrived at the gym. Eva then took her ear buds out and sighed as she turned the volume down.
"So," Eva began, "are you coming to the rematch this Friday?"
"Well," Beth began, "we'll see. I probably won't get a front row seat though, so..."
"See you around, Beth."
Eva then stepped out of the car as she closed the door behind her. Beth then drove back home to change into her uniform. Once in her uniform, she raced to work and clocked in as the lunch rush began.
After completing another shift of work, she then went home to change into some casual clothes before sitting on the couch and taking out her phone. She dialed Lindsay's number as she turned the tv on.
"Hey," Lindsay answered gleefully.
"Hi Lindsay," Beth answered back, "How did the shoot go?"
"It was great; we took so many pictures and I posed so much, I can barely feel my arms and legs. But it was all worth it cause it they pictures were perfect. So, how was your work day?"
"Busy as usual. Wanna hear about this one customer I had to deal with, though?"
"I'm listening."
"Okay, so this woman comes in and orders a Jacques Burger with cheese and two cookies."
"Okay?"
"Then like 30 seconds later, she comes back asking for a refund on the cookies. Want to know why?"
"Why?"
"Because she didn't like chocolate chip cookies."
"What?! Why did she order them then?"
"She thought we made oatmeal raisin cookies. I told her we only have chocolate chip, sugar, peanut butter, and walnut cookies. You know what she does?"
"Politely apologizes and finishes her meal?"
"HAH!! I wish! Instead she starts arguing with me and claiming that the Jacques Burgers website says we make oatmeal raisin cookies, without realizing that only restaurants in Quebec make oatmeal raisin cookies."
"Oh my gosh."
"I was not putting up with her attitude, so I call the manager who asked her to leave."
"And did she leave?"
"That would've made things so much easier. No, instead she starts arguing and insulting my manager. The police were then called and she had to be escorted out. The manager then put that customer's name on the Blacklist."
"What's a Blacklist?"
"It's a list of customers who are forbidden from entering any Jacques Burgers restaurant. You know how we ask customers for their names before writing them on their receipts?"
"Yeah?"
"Friendly customers are always welcome; the ones that make the company look bad are put on the Blacklist."
"So that woman's not allowed at any Jacques Burgers restaurant?"
"Exactly."
"And all that was over stupid cookies?"
"I know, right? Anyway, I'm gonna head to the store after this show ends."
"Whatcha watchin?"
"Baby in High School."
"I've never heard about it."
"It's a dumb show about a teenager who gets turned into a baby."
"That sounds like a kids show."
"It's actually meant for teens and young adults; and it's really not that funny."
"Then why are you watching it?"
"Because I want to see where they go with this story."
"Oh; well I gotta go. Tyler and I are going out to see a movie."
"'Kay, talk to you later."
"Bye."
"Bye."
Beth then hung up the phone and continued watching tv until the episode ended. She then turned the tv off and grabbed her purse before heading to her car. She started it up and drove to the general store, which was just around the corner from where the gym was. After parking her car, she went into the store and walked around until she found the isle where the picture frames were. Right as she walked into the isle, she came face to face with Eva, who was holding a picture frame.
"Hey, Eva," Beth said, "what's up?"
"Well," Eva began, "I just got out of the gym and decided to come here...to...look around and...stuff?"
"Where you going to buy me a new frame?"
"Well...kinda. Look, I felt bad for overreacting a little last night and I wanted to show how sorry I was by getting you a new frame."
"Aww, that's so very nice."
"And so not me. Not the "being nice part" the part about...you know..."
"Caring about someone except yourself."
"Yeah, exactly. It feels...weird. It makes me feel like...like..."
Beth placed a hand on Eva's and asked, "Like a friend?"
Eva just stared at their hands touching and said, "I think so."
"Well, thank you-" *puts hand down* "-for offering to buy a new frame. That's very thoughtful of you."
"Well, you gave me a lot to think about."
Beth smiled as they walked to the cashier for check out. After the frame was scanned, Eva gave the cashier $10 and received her change. She then gave Beth the bag the frame was put in and followed her out to the store.
"So," Eva began, "what are you doing when you get home?"
"Well," Beth replied, "first I'm going to fit the picture in the frame. Then I'm going to draw something. I don't know what it's going to be, but when it hits me, I'll start drawing. But before I do, I'm going to be chatting with my friends via CircleOFriends. What about you?"
"I was gonna head home and play some video games; ever play DTAN?"
"Ummm...I don't play video games actually."
"Well, why not come to my house for so video game action? When you're not busy, that is."
"Well, I'm free Friday."
"I got a rematch on Friday."
"Oh right. Well, I guess I could stop by tomorrow after class."
"Yeah, that sounds good."
"Great; so what's your address?"
"72 Roseart Dr.."
"Great, I'll be there. Do you need a ride home?"
"Nah, I only live a few blocks away. I'll jog, thanks."
"Okay, see you tomorrow."
Beth then went to her car as Eva jogged her way home. Beth drove all the way home and placed the picture of her and Lindsay in the new frame. She then heated up some leftover corn soup before sitting down at her computer. She logged on and opened up her CircleOFriends.com before messaging Owen, Gwen, Izzy, Cody, and Lindsay; they wasted no time before joining.
"Hey Beth," Gwen typed.
"Hey!" Lindsay said.
"Hi!" Izzy said.
"Hey guys," Owen typed.
"What's up?" Cody asked.
"Hey guys," Beth said.
"So," Gwen began, "what are you up to?"
"I'm eating dinner now, but I was thinking about drawing something."
"Really?" Cody asked, "Like what?"
"I not sure; any suggestions?"
"How about a dragon incinerating a city?" Izzy said.
"Ooh, that sounds awesome," Gwen typed.
"I was thinking maybe she should draw Eva lifting weights," Lindsay suggested.
"Speaking of which," Owen began, "how did things go last night?"
"Well," Beth typed, "it was something."
"Really? How so?"
"We watched Bullets, Bombs and Bob and then talked about why she's so defensive."
"Why was that movie at your place, Beth?" Cody asked, "I thought you couldn't stand ultra-violent movies."
"Duncan left it there," Gwen said, "he thought if Beth sat through it multiple times she wouldn't be so squeamish. I told him it was a stupid idea but Beth insisted that she could do it."
"I barely sat through it," Beth said, "I'd describe how gross it was, but just thinking about it makes me lose my appetite."
"I'll have him pick it up tomorrow."
"Thanks."
"Back on Eva," Izzy began, "did you get something interesting out of her or did she give you a black eye and leave?"
"My face is fine actually and I did actually learn more about her."
"Wait," Gwen said, "how did this conversation about being defensive start?"
"Her iPod fell under the couch, so she flipped it and broke a picture frame of Lindsay and I."
"She's still attached to that thing?! XD" Izzy typed, "I still remember when she went ape shit after she lost it the first time!"
"Anyway, the reason why she's always defensive is because she bullied growing up."
"And she bulked up and became the bully she hated," Gwen typed.
"Yeah, exactly."
"I'm pretty sure that happens to a lot of people," Cody said.
"I honestly feel bad for Eva now," Owen said, "I mean, I've been called fat, smelly and loud long before TDI. It still hurt, but I'd much rather feel bad myself then let others feel my pain."
"Aww, poor baby :(" Izzy typed.
"Not to mention we were all bullied by Heather on the show," Lindsay said.
"...Did you seriously just say her name? -.-" Gwen asked.
"Oop, sorry. I meant You Know Who, I swear."
"I know you did. Anyway, I gotta go."
"Bye Gwen," Beth said.
Gwen then logged off and after an hour of talking about their jobs, so did everyone else. Beth then washed her bowl and spoon before taking out her sketch book from atop her dresser. She then took a pencil from her desk and sat on her couch to think about what to draw.
She thought for a moment about what to draw, digging in her mind for some inspiration. She then thought about Eva describing her childhood and how things would've been different if she had a friend. It then dawned on her what she should draw and immediately she started sketching the drawing out.
After completing the sketch, she then took out her easel from the closet as well as a fresh white board and her paint kit. After setting up in the living room, Beth redrew the sketch onto the board before placing it on the easel. She then put on her apron and turned on the radio before she started painting.
She was very precise with her paint, making sure to stay within the lines as much as possible. She also made sure to mix some colors together to add shading and different tones to the painting. Her neighbors were barking at each other again next door, but at this time She completely blocked them out to focus on her latest painting.
By the time she was finished, it was already dark out. Beth smiled in accomplishment as she took off her apron and put it in the laundry hamper. She then washed her paint dish and brushes before packing them up back in her closet. She left the easel out in the living room to dry as she took a shower and went to bed.
She woke up the next morning and checked on her painting; the paint was still abit sticky, but not not entirely wet. She then made herself some breakfast before watching some morning tv. After a marathon of morning sitcoms, she then changed into her uniform and headed to work before going to school immediately after.
After finishing up class, she then drove to 72 Roseart Dr.; it wasn't hard to find, as it was the only white house in a pretty colorful neighborhood. She parked her car next to her mailbox before walking up to her door and knocking.
"What the fuck do you want?!" Eva asked rudely.
"Eva, it's me," Beth said.
Eva then opened the door and said, "Sorry, I don't get visitors."
"I can tell."
"So, ready to rekt some fascist pricks?"
"...Huh?"
"Death To All Nazis , it's a game where you kill racist pricks in World War 2."
"Who would design a game like that?"
"Americans."
"Oh."
Beth then stepped into Eva's house and looked around as the door was closed behind her. To her left were stairs to the upper half of the house and as she walked into the living room, she saw to her left the kitchen and dining room. Straight ahead was a slide door that lead to a deck.
"Bathroom's upstairs," Eva said, setting up the console, "first door to you right, can't miss it."
"Okay," Beth acknowledged, taking a seat.
As the game started up, Eva handed her a controller before sitting next to her. Beth stared at her controller, trying to figure out the mechanics. She toggled the joy stick with her thumb and when she looked up at the screen, her character moved around aimlessly.
"Okay," Beth said, "so, this is forward."
"You've really never played a video game before," Eva said.
"Not really."
"Okay, it's find I'll show you; the A button is to fire your gun, B's to punch, C's to grab, and D's to jump. Got it?"
"I think so."
"Alright, let's bust some heads."
Eva toggled forward as Beth followed. It didn't take long for enemies to show up; and when they did, Eva wasted no time before pelting them with bullets. Beth tried to aim but took cover when they fired at her.
"What are you doing?" Eva asked.
"Trying to stay alive," Beth replied.
"They're not going to stop firing at you until you fire back and kill them."
"I know, but I just...it feels like they're really shooting at me."
"Yeah, that's the point."
Beth then took a deep breath and moved her character out of the hiding spot before firing at the enemies. Almost immediately, though, she jumped when her character was shot in the head by a sniper.
"Probably should've warned you about the sniper up there," Eva said.
"Oh my gosh," Beth said, placing a hand on her chest, "that scared me."
Beth then picked up her controller and got back to firing at the enemies. She got her first kill this time, but was almost immediately killed before she had a chance to celebrate.
"Dang it!" she exclaimed, "Right as I got my first kill."
"Yeah, that happens," Eva commented, "Hey, you know I just realized something about you."
"What?"
"You don't swear, even when you're really pissed."
"I can't help it, my parents raised me to never use dirty language."
"Yet you don't mind other people swearing."
"I can't control how people use their words."
"That's for damn sure."
"There's something I've been meaning to ask you; do you still take anger management classes?"
"Don't have to; once I got this gig as a fighter, I've been less "explosive" let's just say."
"So you've learned to let go more?"
"Not exactly."
"Did you send someone to the hospital?"
"In the passed week? No; but I did knock some guy's teeth out when he thought it'd be a good idea to hit on me the week before."
"Didn't you get arrested after that?"
"The guy was too much of a pussy to call the cops, so no."
"I'm guessing just telling him "no" didn't come to mind at that moment."
"I could've just said no, but...well, you know."
"Yeah, I know."
Beth and Eva were silent for a moment as they continued playing the game. Beth didn't even realize that she had gotten the hang of playing during the conversation as she was taking out enemies much easier than before.
"Didn't you say you were going to teach kids?" Eva then asked.
"Yeah," Beth replied, "why, you don't like kids?"
"I know we were all kids at one point, but when you get older, you realize kids are annoying little shits."
"What do expect? They're kids."
"There lies the problem; they're allowed to be annoying because "they're kids." It's not like we can stop them from making me want to rip my hair out every time they scream and cry."
"They can't help it, they don't know any better. Until their taught how to be respectful, tantrums is something that's to be expected with them."
"All the more reason why I don't plan on having kids. I'll leave that to you and your future husband or whatever.
Beth was silent for a moment, staring down at her controller while Eva paused the game.
"Hey," Eva said, "are you okay?"
"I'm fine," Beth said, adjusting her glasses.
"Then what's up?"
"I just..."
"What? Did you meet a guy and when he said he didn't want kids, things didn't work out?"
"...Yes."
"Wait what? You actually went through that? How long has it been?
"...2 weeks."
"Damn; were you close?"
Beth then got up and started to walk upstairs to the bathroom. She then closed the door behind her and sat on the toilet without dropping her pants or letting the seat. She curled up into a ball and took off her glasses as she buried her face into her arms. She sobbed quietly as she sat in the bathroom for what felt like ages.
Eva tapped on the door and said, "Hey Beth, you alright in there?"
Beth wiped away a tear and said as she held back her sobs, "I'm fine."
"Uhhh...I'm pretty sure this isn't what fine looks like."
"I don't expect you to understand; to know how it feels when the person you love for years decides to dump you out of the blue."
"...You're right, I don't know how it feels to be dumped. But I do know what it's like to have a broken heart."
"Really?"
"Did I ever talk to you about my parents?"
"...No."
"Well, growing up, they were my heroes. Whenever I needed help, they were there for me. But when I became a hot tempered bully and started beating people up, they kept their distance from me. I couldn't even talk to them without them flinching. When I came back from Total Drama, instead of a welcome home party, they kicked me out. They told me to to take my monstrous temper somewhere else and stay away from them. I gave them an angry look, but when I turned my back, I was crying really hard because my parents thought I was a hot tempered monster they couldn't control."
Beth then unlocked opened the door and gave Eva a hug. Eva was surprised at first, but wrapped her arms around her and hugged her back anyways. They hugged for a moment before releasing and walking downstairs together.
"I'm really sorry about your parents," Beth said.
"Thanks," Eva replied, "that means a lot."
Beth was about to say something, but just then her phone vibrated in her pocket.
"Sorry," Beth said, taking out her phone, "I need to take this."
"It's fine," Eva said, sitting on the couch.
Beth then answered her phone as she walked into the kitchen and said, "Hello?"
"Hey Beth," Duncan replied.
"Hi Duncan, how are you?"
"I'm great, thanks. Listen, I'm at your apartment to pickup the movie; where are you?"
"I'm at Eva's place."
"The mad Titan Eva? What are you doing there?"
"Playing video games and there's more to her than just her temper."
"I'm sure there is; are you coming home soon or do I need to pick the lock?"
"Duncan."
"<chuckles> I'm just kidding; I'll just wait here for you to get home."
"Okay, I'll be there in a bit."
"'Kay, see ya.
"See ya."
After hanging up, Beth said to Eva, "I have to go now."
"Why?" she asked.
"I have to give Duncan back that movie we watched last night."
"Oh, okay; you coming to the rematch tomorrow?"
"I guess."
"Okay, see ya."
"Bye; oh wait, I have a painting for you."
"Huh?"
"It's at my apartment, I'm gonna go get it and come right back; don't go anywhere."
"Alright I won't."
Beth then rushed out the door and got in her car before driving off back home.
