Exactly two Taco Bells and one Burger King later Dipper and Mabel found themselves back in Gravity Falls where an almost unsettling chill and dreary look loomed over the town. Despite the fact that they were still in the car all the vibrant colors they recalled were washed out with a bite in the air that hadn't been present when they spent time in the town before. Mabel had proved Dipper right in his choice to bring her when she noticed something that he hadn't with his mind distracted and locked on this cold, sad weather.
“Hey Dipper? There's no one here.” Mabel's arms were wrapped around herself as if she could protect herself from the cool air by locking her arms over he shoulders. “There's cars, there should be people here, but there's no one. Not even in the diner, look.”
Oddly enough she had been right. Looking up from the road for a fraction of a second before looking back the looming gray fog didn't obscure the view of the windows that reviled an empty diner. No one was there at all, not even Lazy Susan. Rubbing his chin was a marker for Dipper's stress these days and he caught himself doing it as too had Mabel. Neither of them brought it up as they continued on with Dipper flicking the heat on as they drove through. Even for October it was unseasonably cold with puffs of breath starting to spill out with each breath. “I don't like it Mabel.” Finally Dipper spoke before gesturing to the back seat. “There's a coat back there.” Perhaps there was a pause because Dipper thought in silence now or perhaps he was unsettled or nervous. “I know it's been four years but this town went from weird to tragic or at leas that's how it seems doesn't it? It's not just me?” Looking for the comfort of not being alone from his sister as they drove into the local hotel it was the only place he could think to go for the moment.
“Do you think someone's going to be here?” Ducking out of the car with a coat over her shoulders now Mabel too seemed almost subdued. “If no one's here, what do we do?”
“Well, we can't sleep in the car if this is how cold it's going to be. Don't worry Mabel, I'll figure something out.” Not exactly confidant with what was going on Dipper swallowed any apprehension and strode into the hotel to find that it too was empty. Not a single soul turned up even after ringing the bell aside from Mabel who walked in a few minutes after her brother.
The pair of them could feel it. The feeling of something watching them from just behind them, from just out of sight but neither of them could tell who or what it was and why they were being watched so very closely. “Dipper, what happened to everyone? Gravity Falls has always been weird but it's never been empty. It's never felt so weird before.” Watching in shocked silence as Dipper hopped the counter and got the both of them a pair of keys Maybel looked uncomfortable to say the least. “You can't just /take/ that Dipper.” Giving his sister a look and rolling his eyes he had fished out a wallet where he kept a small amount of cash and a debit card. Thankfully Dipper gained an interest in coding and programming so a summer job didn't exactly rob him of all of his time like most summer jobs did.
“Don't worry. I'm going to leave cash. No one's here but I know how you feel.” With two sets of keys he had handed one pair to Mabel who looked just as uncomfortable as she had since they had first arrived. “It's going to be getting dark soon and I don't know what's going on here. We should stay inside at night since that's when things seem to get dangerous around here. Or at least that's how I remember it. Always more dangerous at night than in the day.”
“Dipper I don't want to be alone in a room. It's... I don't like it. Can we get one with two beds and share a room like we used to?” Mabel looked scared and to be honest? Dipper didn't blame her. “I don't care if you call me a chicken, I don't want to be alone.”
“No, no I don't blame you. I uh, I don't want to be alone either.”
With that out of the way the pair of them went back to the car and fished out their things before vanishing into the room they were now sharing. They took it slow at first making sure there was nothing waiting for them, nothing that lurked in wait like a fly trap. When nothing swallowed them up or gave them reason to worry they began to unpack and stash away clothing in drawers and checking the T.V. Nothing. Not even infomercials were available in this dead town. The whole situation made Dipper's stomach turn and suddenly a host of new worries overtook him. Being quick about this he checked the tap for water. Nothing. Flipped the light switch and... power? The power was on but the water was off? Was there still someone at the power station but no one left to manage the water? Knowing they would be okay for a day or two without he left it unmentioned but made going to visit the water treatment and management buildings along with the power. If there was anyone here they had to know what happened and why the town was so empty. Who knows, maybe the water being out was why they left? As impossible of an aswer as that was Dipper found himself hoping it was the reason even if the logical part of his mind screamed that leaving town wasn't something one did just because the water was out. There were alternatives to getting it from the tap and the people of this town loved it to much to just /leave/ like that.
With the pair in their separate beds and an inky, unnatural darkness waiting outside the door Dipper started to re-think this whole trip. What if this was the center of all of it and the whole world had this in store? Would everyone vanish? Worry and anxiety waited at Dipper's side until he finally fell asleep and despite them not being the best bed partners the sleep he found that night was deep and dreamless at first. Something that Dipper wished had stayed that way.
“Heya kiddo! Been a long time since I've seen /you/ around these parts!”
The unmistakable voice of Bill Cypher echoed around Dipper as he scowled. “I should have known this had something to do with you!”
Giggling menacingly as only he could Bill had showed up in 'wide screen format' in front of Dipper, that crisp golden form and that single eye showing bemusement. “Oh Pine tree, I'm flattered!” In a far less amused tone and a flat almost annoyed tone he spoke again. “This isn't my doing, as much as I wish it was.” Floating around to get closer as well as smaller he crossed his 'arms' over his 'chest'. “I might be sinister, but I'm not some kind of animal. I'm smarter than that and you know it Pines.”
So it wasn't Bill, and yet here he was? Things were getting more and more complex and Dipper liked none of it. Complexity left more room for error when it came to judging motive and who might be behind this. Tell tale aching that came before a migraine started to wick away any tolerance that he might have had for Bill. “If you're not behind this, who is?”
“That's not how this works, you know that!” Bill made as if to chuckle again and that amused look returned. “I could help you figure this out you know.” Bill almost teased while moving around him to his other shoulder and slightly behind him. “Sure there's still a price, there's always a price, but I'll give you a discount just because I DON'T LIKE THIS EITHER.” Blue flame had enclosed Bill with a clear rage distorting his form and voice that with an unnatural quick moment had all but vanished. “I can't manifest outside of dreams right now, so you'll have to sleep if you want to talk to me.”
“You said you'll give me a discount, but what's the price?”
“Oh, that? Ha ha, just a body. You know I can't do anything without one! And not being able-”
“I'm not giving you my body. I still have scars from where the forks were.”
“Oh no dear boy, not your body. I'll need to work with you to help you with this. I need my own.” If Bill could smirk without a mouth he was.
“Do you not know anything about human reproduction? That takes time.”
“Yeah, that's true, but I don't mind a used model in this case. You see, only the /healthy/ people are gone. That means there's still plenty of bodies at the hospital! I just need you to you know, smother one with a pillow until it's nearly dead and I can move in! Brain death is a clear loophole you know. If there's no one to make a deal with I can just slip in as if it's a pair of shoes on the side of the road!”
Somehow every time Dipper met with Bill it made him more uncomfortable around the monster. Smother someone until they were brain dead? The very idea made his stomach turn and threatened to make him vomit even in his dream. “You're a monster. I won't do that, not for you, not for anyone.”
“Oh I think you would do it for someone and while I can't do anything I'll remind you that you're no longer the only healthy person in this town.” This time there was a poisonous tinge to Bill's voice, not quite a threat but a warning of what might be to come. “Not that I think it would take you, while your body is healthy your mind is a whole other story Pine Tree.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, that's my cue! I've gotta run, but think about it! I'll always be watching so if you decide to take me up, all you have to do is you know, almost kill someone. I mean, I'm not asking you to actually kill someone even though I don't doubt you would do it for that pretty sister of yours!” Cackling as Dipper felt the dream like world around him melt he clenched his teeth. This was the way it felt to wake up when something slimy and humid had visited you in your dreams. Waking up covered in sweat despite the cold of the room Dipper rubbed his hands over his face and looked to the window when his heart stopped.
There on the other side of the glass were two hand prints and perhaps where a nose and forehead had been pressed to the glass. Who, or what, had been watching them sleep?! Quickly getting out of the bed and rushing to the window to look both ways he spotted movement again but this time it was coming from inside of his car. Mabel was in bed so it wasn't her, she hadn't forgotten something. Lanky limbs that looked like they would be more at home on something from a horror movie curved up in a twisted and unnatural way as the thing ripped something apart. The car was shaking with the force it was using but it wasn't until there was a quick flash of headlights and a half a honk from the car horn that Dipper figured out what it was doing. It was pulling the wires from the column. Further proof of this came when the not quite human lifted its head with a mouth full of wires and scorched flesh from where they had seared flesh.
Strange things happened in Gravity Falls, but seeing this horror was a first. This thing looked like it might fit the fogged and quickly vanishing marks on the windows and here it was disabling the car. It was no beast, it was smart and it was trapping them here. Being so invested in what was going on outside Dipper hadn't noticed Mabel wake and join him in watching this beast. The only tip that Dipper got was the shaky inhale and held breath while she tried not to scream, ducking down at the foot of her brother's bed.
“Dipper, Dipper what is that?” Mabel was quiet even though her voice shook in fear, perhaps horror and he found himself wondering why it affected her more than it had him. She had rarely ever been effected more than he had with all the odd things that happened but here she was now shaken and hiding. None the less Dipper joined her on the floor at the foot of his best after drawing the blinds to keep it from looking in again.
“I don't know, but it was watching us, there were marks on the window.” Finding himself whispering back to his sister he was also listening. “It ripped the wires out of the car, we're stuck here.” He said while inching closer. “I don't know what's going on, but it's worse than I thought. I don't know how or why, but Bill's involved too.” Dipper had informed her and got a startled look. “He offered to help me, I don't think he likes what's going on, but I still don't trust him.”
“Good, you shouldn't! Bill's dangerous. You remember what happened last time right?”
“How could I forget?” Dipper was nearly insulted that she would think he could ever forget the hellish events he had caused the family. “Now we know it's not safe at all at night, maybe not even during the day.”
No more sleep was had after the two of them woke to find that thing destroying the car, Mabel who tried to shower learned of the water being off and Dipper was reminded that he hadn't thought to pack any good books on this trip. The next thing they would both learn is that yes, it knew what it was doing because just then a loud noise echoed through the area following the power finally shutting off for one reason or another. Now they were left in the dark of the hotel with nothing but a simple wooden door and a large pane of glass that separated them from what ever was outside.
Bill's offer was starting to seem like the only option that seemed worth the risk to Dipper.
