Zero Ebon awoke with a start, violet eyes scanning his surroundings. The other Airship passengers were too busy talking among themselves or enjoying the view to notice the young man leaning against the bulkhead farthest from everyone else.
The Wolf Faunus, though very few would be able to tell due to his only features being his elongated canines and slightly pointed ears, turned his tired gaze to the nearest window, seeing the silhouette of Beacon Academy getting closer.
‘Home sweet home,’ Zero though bitterly to himself as he clenched his artificial left hand. Running his eyes across the passengers again, he was at least grateful his school uniform, with the addition of a single white glove, hid his custom-built prosthetic from curious eyes. The last thing he wanted was nosy students asking about it. He was also grateful that none of the other non-first-year students had recognized him yet. He also didn’t want to answer questions about…
Shaking his head with a quiet growl, he stopped the memories before they could begin. It was bad enough he had to relive that night every time he slept. He was distracted from his thoughts by shouting and the smell of vomit.
“Oh, Yang, gross! You have puke on your shoe!” shouted a petite girl with red-tipped and a hooded cloak who seemed a little young to be a student at Beacon. She and an older girl with a mess of blond hair shouted and screamed as the sick girl with short blond hair finally made it to a waste-bin.
<><><> After disembarking the Airship, Zero headed straight for the Tower, making sure to give ‘Vomit Girl’ a wide berth. It took a few minutes to reach it, where he was greeted by the Assistant Headmaster, Glynda Goodwitch. In a very uncharacteristic display, she hugged him.“I’m so sorry, Zero,” she said, her voice cracking with emotion. “For everything.” Just as quickly as she had hugged him, she released him, clearing her throat as she visibly reined her emotions. Zero was simply stunned, the memories of last year threatening to overwhelm him. But they both managed to get themselves back under control.
“Thank you, Professor,” Zero said quietly, unable to look her in the eye.
Clearing her throat once more, Glynda turned on her heel and began walking to the elevator. “Your scroll has already been updated to reflect your new status, Mr. Ebon.” She explained as she gestured to the reader next to the closed doors. Zero took the hint and swiped his Scroll through it, causing the doors to open. “Professor Ozpin is waiting for you. Please, don’t keep him too long. He still has to make his speech to the new students.” With that, the professor abruptly walked away.
Still confused as to her burst of emotion, Zero stepped into the elevator and hit the button for the Headmasters office. He hoped the other teachers wouldn’t react the same way.
“Welcome back to Beacon, Mr. Ebon,” Ozpin said as the elevator doors opened, snapping Zero from his thoughts.
“Yeah, well, you were right,” Zero admitted grudgingly. “I ain’t the type to sit around feeling sorry for myself.” He subconsciously ran his right hand over his glove, feeling the steel beneath the fabric.
Ozpin took a sip from his coffee as he closed his scroll and stood from his desk. “Yes, well, I am not the Headmaster for nothing,” he said with a small smirk. “Thank you, Mr. Ebon, for accepting my offer. The staff has already been notified of her new status as a Teaching Assistant, and modified their lesson plans accordingly. Your schedule, as well as your modified curriculum, will be sent to your Scroll tonight. Now, if you will follow me, I must give my speech. Afterword’s, I will show you to where you will be staying.”
Zero followed Ozpin back into the elevator and shot him a quizzical glance. “I’d think you would have more important things to than show me my new room, Professor.”
“There is more I wish to speak to you about, Mr. Ebon.” Ozpin said simply, taking another sip from his coffee mug as the elevator doors reopened. “For starters, your first assignment will be during tomorrow’s initiation.” Ozpin opened his scroll and tapped a few keys. Zero felt his own Scroll vibrate and pulled it out to see several files. “We have several, unusual, students this year. Those are their files.” Ozpin explained. “Your primary assignment for the school year will be to…minimize…the amount of trouble they get into.”
Zero quickly flipped through the files as they walked towards the Amphitheater. “Ruby Rose, 15-years old, stopped a robbery committed by Roman Torchwick and Hei “Junior” Xiong’s enforcers. Impressive. Weiss Schnee, heiress to the Schnee Dust Company. Blake Belladonna…former White Fang member?” Zero stopped and looked at Ozpin, who simply sipped his coffee and continued walking.
Zero sighed and shrugged as he flipped to the next file. “Yang Xiao Long, half-sister to Ruby Rose, took down Junior, his bodyguards, and most of his enforcers at his club. Great, the whole family made an enemy of two of the biggest criminals in the Kingdom.” Zero said with a sigh, not even bothering to look at the headmaster this time. “Joan Arc, of the Arc Family. Perfect transcripts, no surprise there.” Zero started, before noticing the note at the bottom of said transcripts and stopping in his tracks again. “She submit fake transcripts, and has never even been to a Combat Academy…and you let her in anyway?”
This time Ozpin replied before taking a drink, though he did not stop walking. “I have faith in her. She is an Arc, after all.”
Zero didn’t even bother to shake his head or sigh this time as he remember just how annoying the Headmasters disregard for his own rules could be sometimes. Slipping his Scroll back into his pocket, he followed the Headmaster into the Amphitheatre and found a quiet corner to stand in while the white-haired Huntsman made his way to center stage.
“I'll... keep this brief,” Ozpin started off his speech. “You have traveled here today in search of knowledge, to hone your craft and acquire new skills, and when you have finished, you plan to dedicate your life to the protection of the people. But I look amongst you, and all I see is wasted energy, in need of purpose, direction.”
This caused a stir in the assembled students, and Zero only grunted. ‘Great pep talk, Professor,’ he thought to himself.
“You assume knowledge will free you of this,” Ozpin continued. “But your time at this school will prove that knowledge can only carry you so far. It is up to you to take the first step.” With that he left, and Glynda took over. Zero quickly made his way to where Ozpin was waiting, and together they set off for the Dorms.
“So…does being a Teaching Assistant let me ask you what the fuck that was about?” Zero asked.
Ozpin took a sip of his coffee, then another as he appeared to think over the question. “No.”
“Figured…”
“You will meet myself and Professor Goodwitch at the Beacon Cliffs tomorrow morning.” Ozpin said. “Stay out of sight until all the students have begun the test. You will follow them into the Emerald Forest and observe. Grimm activity has increased somewhat, and Professor Goodwitch is worried about that the test may prove more dangerous than previous years.”
“Isn’t danger kinda the point, though?” Zero asked.
“Yes, Mr. Ebon, but there is danger, and then there is danger.” Ozpin answered before continuing. “You are not to interfere or reveal your presence unless absolutely necessary to prevent a student’s death. However, you are only one person, so use your judgement when decided who to observe and when.”
“Will I have access to the surveillance feeds?” Zero asked, then let out a short bark of laughter at Ozpin’s inquisitive glance. “Don’t give me that look. I know you and Glynda watch every second of the Initiation. I almost ate one of your mini-cams you had hidden in a berry bush, remember?”
“Hmm, yes, I do,” Ozpin replied, smiling faintly as he entered one of the dorm buildings and headed for the elevator. “And, I’ll think about. Now, you have also been made Manager of your Floor, so you will have that responsibility as well.”
“Yeah, but I’m guessing you have already guessed what the teams will be, and already have a room assignment plan that ensures as many, if not all, of the students you want me keeping in minimal trouble are on my floor, right?” Zero stated more than asked. Growling at Ozpin’s knowing smirk, Zero continued, “And all of these students being girls…I suppose that’s just a coincidence?”
As the elevator doors opened and they stepped into the hall, Ozpin let out a heavy sigh. “Yes, Zero, it is.” The Faunus did not miss the fact the headmaster had used his first name. They reached the end of the hall and Zero swiped his Scroll through the reader of the door on the left, unlocking it so they could enter his new room.
Zero immediately noticed several weapons hanging on one of the walls of the small room, right above his desk. He stopped in his tracks as painful memories assaulted him. Ozpin placed a hand on his shoulder, snapping him out his trance. “I restored them myself. I know they must bring back painful memories, and for that I am sorry. But we must never forget our past, nor must be let it control us…” Ozpin trailed off as his own gaze became distant.
Zero stepped away from the headmaster and gently ran his flesh-and-blood fingertips against the double-ended gun-lance, folding compound bow, and ballistic Escrima sticks. “Gamuza, Artemis…and the Boom Sticks.” Zero said quietly. “Thank you, Professor…thank you.”
“You’re welcome, Mr. Ebon,” Ozpin replied before pointing his cane at Zero’s nightstand. “I always fulfilled your requirement for returning to the school.” Zero walked over and opened the drawers, finding false bottoms in all three, under which were prescription bottles with the same medicine in them. “Be warned, Mr. Ebon,” Ozpin said with a serious glare. “If those Alpha Blockers negatively affect your performance, I will personally destroy each and every one of them.”
Zero returned Ozpin’s stare, both refusing to break eye contact. “They won’t, Professor. I give you my word.”
Ozpin held the stare for a few moments longer, before nodding and taking another sip of his coffee. “Good night, Mr. Ebon. I will see you tomorrow morning. Do try not to be late.”
Zero bristled at the reminder of his very first day at Beacon, where he had slept in to the point of not arriving at the Cliffs until the last student had already landed in the Emerald Forest. He unpacked the suitcases and boxes that had already been placed in the room, and laid his personal weapon, Gypsy Danger, on his desk.
When he opened the final box, he felt his memories threaten to overtake him once more. Carefully removing the three objects within, he laid them next to his whip-sword. A battle-scarred right pauldron, a right bracer in similar condition, and a tattered crimson scarf.
Looking around his now unpacked room, Zero let out a heavy sigh and decided to take advantage of having the bathroom for this floor all to himself for one night to bathe in peace and quiet. After returning to his room, he changed into a pair of simple black-and-grey pants and crawled into bed, falling into a restless sleep…
