Chapter 2
A day had passed. Candace, wanting to give Stacy some space and too despondent to even think about busting her brothers, had spent much of the previous afternoon in her room, puzzling over her suddenly very complex feelings about her relationships with Stacy and Jeremy. Stacy had been Candace’s best friend since forever, but deep down, Candace had always felt at least a twinge of something more than that—an attraction whose nature was not entirely clear but that had suddenly grown far stronger with the revelation that her friend felt it too.
How was she supposed to deal with this? She loved Jeremy and had no desire to leave him, but at the same time, she couldn’t deny the power of her newfound connection with Stacy. And then there was the question of how she was supposed to help her best friend through her breakup despite this massive complication.
Candace had half a mind to take her problem to Phineas. He could build animal translators and elevators to the moon, but could he resolve a dilemma as complicated as this one? Would all the brainpower in his triangular head be enough?
Triangular… she thought, not certain why her mind had seized on that word. Triangle…
Her eyes suddenly opened wide as an idea formed in her head. A crazy idea. But the moment she had it, she knew she’d never be able to let go of it unless she gave it a try.
***
Within the hour, Candace was back at Stacy’s, armed with a spiral notebook, a pen, and a pint of Rocky Road. Stacy’s mom was working, so the two girls were alone in the Hirano kitchen.
“So…” Candace began cautiously, “I have this idea. An idea for making everything better for us. It’s kind of weird, but…keep an open mind.”
“Okay,” Stacy said. She seemed to be past the crying stage, at least at the moment, but she still looked a bit fragile.
Candace took a deep breath and just spat it out. “We should have a love triangle!”
Stacy looked confused, then shocked, then dubious.
“A love triangle? Candace, I’ve heard about those on the news. One person always gets shot, another one always goes to jail, and I don’t even want to know what happens to the third person.”
“No, no, see, those aren’t real triangles,” Candace said.
Opening her spiral notebook and whipping out her pen, the redheaded girl drew three equidistant points, then drew two lines connecting one point to the other two.
“Look,” she said. “Those so-called ‘love triangles’ only have two sides, because they’re just two people who are in love with one person. But I’m talking about a real triangle, with three sides.”
She added a third line, making all three points connect.
“Candace, I got a B-plus in geometry, and I still have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Okay, forget the visual aids,” Candace said, tossing the notebook aside. “I’m talking about you, me, and Jeremy dating.”
“Dating who?”
“Each other!”
“Wait, you mean…I’d be Jeremy’s girlfriend AND your girlfriend?”
“Yup. And I’d be your and Jeremy’s girlfriend, and Jeremy would be your and my boyfriend.”
“Wow.”
“I know, right? It’s genius!”
“No, I mean, wow, that’s got to be the craziest idea you’ve ever had. And that’s really saying something.”
“Come on,” Candace begged, suddenly desperate in the face of her brilliant idea’s looming rejection. “I mean, if I weren’t dating Jeremy, wouldn’t you be interested in him?”
“Candace, that’s the kind of question that has no right answer. If I say no, you’ll think I don’t like Jeremy, and if I say yes, you’ll be jealous.”
“No, see, I won’t be jealous, because you wouldn’t be stealing Jeremy from me—you’d be sharing him with me.” Then, blushing slightly, Candace added, “And you’d be sharing yourself with me, too.”
Stacy’s eyes went wide, staring at nothing as she took this in.
“It would just be an experiment,” Candace added hastily. “No commitment—we’d just try it out and see if it works.”
“Wow,” Stacy said. “It’s…I don’t know. I mean, assuming that Jeremy goes for it…what would our parents think?”
"Well, if this is just an experiment, then there's no need for our parents to know about it unless we decide that it’s going to be a thing."
"But what about our friends?" Stacy asked. "We couldn't hide this from them."
"Well," Candace said thoughtfully, "outside of you, me, and Jeremy, 'our friends' is basically Jenny. And she's going to be all like, 'Wow, it's so cool that you guys are exploring alternative relationships.'"
"Hey, you do a good Jenny," Stacy said. "And you're right. But there's still everybody else who’ll see us together.”
“People used to see the three of us together all the time before Coltrane came along. As long as we aren’t making out in public, nobody’s going to think there’s anything different going on.”
Stacy took a deep breath.
“Okay. Let’s say all of this goes according to plan. There’s still the question of whether Jeremy and I will have any chemistry together. I mean, I’ve always tried NOT to think about him in that way because he was dating you, so I don’t know if there might be anything there. And, of course, HE still has to buy into all this. I mean, it’s not like most guys would say no to dating two girls at once, but…”
“…Jeremy isn’t most guys,” Candace said. Then she smiled. “And you get that, which is totally promising. How about I bring him over here after he finishes his shift at Slushy Dog? I think he gets off at four.”
“Okay. My mom won’t be home ‘till about six, so we’ll have some time to talk.”
Candace tried to suppress her excitement. Getting Stacy on board was an important step in her plan, and she was psyched to have accomplished that. But she dared not celebrate too much, even on the inside, because it was in these moments of triumph that her plans almost invariably went wrong.
***
Candace showed up at the mall Slushy Dog at four on the dot. She had even called ahead to make sure Jeremy didn’t have other plans for the afternoon. When they caught the bus home, Candace maneuvered them toward the back, where few other people were seated.
“So what do you want to do this afternoon?” said Jeremy. “I’ve got until about six; my mom’s making baked chicken and blueberry-pomegranate-flaxseed compote. Which is basically fruit-flavored sawdust, but I’m sure it’s really healthy.”
“Moms and their food fads,” Candace said a bit awkwardly. “So…can I ask you a totally hypothetical question?”
“Okay, shoot,” Jeremy said.
“If you weren’t dating me, would you consider dating Stacy?”
Jeremy’s head tilted, and his eyes narrowed slightly. “Candace,” he said warily, “this sounds like one of those questions that has no right answer.”
“I swear I won’t get upset, whatever you say.”
“Well, then…no, I probably wouldn’t consider dating Stacy.”
“What?!” Candace slapped a hand over her own mouth, then gradually let it drop as her self-control returned. “I mean, why is that, Jeremy?”
“I’m not saying…I mean, she’s cute…and smart…and funny…”
“And these are reasons why you WOULDN’T date her?”
“I guess…I’m not sure that there’s any kind of spark between us. It’s not something I’ve ever spent time thinking about, you know?”
“But it’s possible that there is?”
“I guess.”
“Good enough. Let’s go to Stacy’s.” Then, after looking around and seeing that no one seemed to be listening in, she said, more quietly, "I have this idea I want to talk to you about..."
***
When they got to the Hirano house, Candace rang the doorbell. Inside, she was vibrating with anxiety and excitement, but she tried to play it cool. Being hyper never led to success.
Stacy answered the door. “Hey, Candace.” Then, only half-looking at her other visitor, she added, “Oh, uh, hey, Jeremy.”
“Hey, there, Stacy,” Jeremy said just as awkwardly.
“Um, come in,” Stacy said.
“Look, guys,” Candace said as they sat down in the living room, “I know this seems like a pretty weird idea. I’m just asking you to give it a chance.”
Stacy and Jeremy, who had been looking at different parts of the carpet, now half-raised their eyes to look in each other’s general direction.
“So…” Stacy began, “how would we do that?”
“Right,” said Jeremy. “I mean, how do we know that there might be anything there? You know…between us?”
“Well,” Candace said, “I mean, you both like me, and I like both of you, so it’s kind of logical that you’d like each other, right?”
“Candace-logic strikes again,” said Stacy.
“Yeah, I don’t think attraction is a transitive property,” Jeremy added.
“Okay, okay,” Candace said. “But I do have an idea about how to see if you guys feel…you know, something…for each other.”
“I’m almost afraid to ask,” said Stacy.
“Don’t worry,” Candace replied, “it’s not anything weird. You guys should just…kiss.”
“Seriously!?” Stacy and Jeremy replied in unison.
“Come on, it makes total sense!” Candace protested. “I mean, at least you’ll know whether you’re, you know, physically attracted to each other.”
“Candace, I don’t know,” Stacy said dubiously.
“Yeah,” said Jeremy. “I mean, even if it works…what if seeing us kiss makes you jealous?”
“This was my idea!” Candace argued. “I wouldn’t ask you to do it if I didn’t really want you to.” Then, with a pleading look in her big eyes, she said, "Just...try it. Please?"
There was silence for a moment. Then, very quietly, Stacy said, “Okay.” She stood up.
"If it's that important to you," Jeremy said, also standing, "then...I guess…"
Hesitantly, he moved closer to Stacy.
"Candace," Stacy said nervously, "this feels-"
"Please, just one good kiss," Candace begged. "Just so we'll know if this could work, or if I'm completely out of my mind."
Stacy and Jeremy eyed her.
"What? I said completely."
"Okay," said Jeremy. He sucked in a breath, then said, "Stacy, you ready?"
Stacy swallowed. "Ready as I'll ever be."
They came together slowly and awkwardly. Candace suddenly imagined Jeremy as a snowman and Stacy as a campfire, each of them wondering whether physical contact would mean mutual destruction.
Almost too softly to hear, Candace murmured, "Come on, guys. Just one kiss. Please…"
Jeremy put his hands around Stacy's waist, and she moved close to him. Candace watched breathlessly as their heads leaned in, and their lips made contact.
Nothing happened. They both just sort of...stopped, standing there like two mannequins that someone had leaned against each other with their lips touching as a joke.
The experiment was a failure.
Inwardly, Candace began lecturing herself for having such a ridiculous idea. She was trying to do the impossible, but that was her brothers' specialty; HER specialty was finding new ways to humiliate herself and alienate her friends. How was she going to face either of them again after talking them into-
Suddenly, Stacy moved forward, putting her body right up against Jeremy's. At the same time, Jeremy's hand rose up behind Stacy's head, and his fingers entwined themselves in her lustrous black hair as the two teenagers' lips began to move against each other.
Candace was speechless. She sat on the edge of the sofa, goggle-eyed and statue-still, as her best friend and boyfriend kissed with increasing passion, lips and bodies moving together. Stacy's hands wandered Jeremy's back, and Jeremy's arms went around Stacy, pulling her tight against him, wanting.
It was the most beautiful and arousing thing Candace had ever seen. She suddenly became acutely aware of the sensation of the fabric of her top against her chest, and she realized that her nipples had grown rock-hard.
They kissed and kissed, holding, touching, exploring. Finally, after more than a minute, they broke away, gasping for air.
"Ohmygosh," Stacy panted. "I...I had...no idea...that I...that I wanted...THAT...so much..."
"It's..." Jeremy gasped, "It's not like...I never...thought about it...but...I didn't think...I felt...like that...about you..."
They looked over at Candace. She knew they expected her to say something, but she remained dumbstruck. The best-case scenario was not a place where she was used to finding herself, and she was gripped by a fear of tempting fate by celebrating her success.
"Candace, are you okay?" Jeremy asked.
Stacy waved a hand in front of Candace's face. "She's gone catatonic!" the girl pronounced. "Quick, Jeremy, we need my mom's portable defibrillator, a strawberry cheesecake, a picture of her brothers and whatever they're building right now, and-"
"Guys!" Candace cried, startling them. "I'm okay. I just...I can't completely believe it. This is...awesome!"
"Wow," Stacy said. "Candace, I've gotta be honest; I didn't think you'd react well to watching your best friend kissing your boyfriend, even if it WAS your idea."
Stacy looked at Candace, and the hair-bowed girl could practically see stars in her redheaded friend's eyes.
"Are you kidding?" Candace practically shouted. "I could watch that all day long! The only thing better would be- would be-"
"-this," Jeremy said, coming up behind Candace and pushing her into Stacy's arms. Then Jeremy moved forward until his front was fully pressed against Candace's back.
Candace's awareness suddenly seemed to expand into every atom of her being. Behind her, she could feel the heat of Jeremy's body radiating against her skin, the touch of each of his fingertips on her upper arms, and especially the hard, hot pole of his erection pushing against her skirted bottom, excited and insistent. And in front of her, Stacy's warm breath on her cheek, the heat and softness of her slender form against Candace's, the sweet smell of her hair, and the sensation that shocked her like an electric spark whenever one of Candace's almost painfully erect nipples would come into contact with one of Stacy's as their bodies touched.
"This," Candace agreed, and the word was all at once a sigh, a gasp, and a lusty growl.
She clasped Stacy's face in her hands and kissed the girl hard and passionately. And even as her tongue found its way into Stacy's mouth and began a sinuous dance of exploration and pleasure with its partner there, her slender ass ground insistently against Jeremy's crotch and the sweet, forbidden hardness there. In response, the boy's hands moved up her sides, and his fingers slipped between the two girls’ chests to touch the redhead's nipples through her top as he had never dared to before, rubbing, pinching, tugging, making Candace's whole body flush with heat and desire and need. And when the hot, beautiful girl in her arms and those unrelenting fingers on her nipples became almost too much for Candace to bear, Jeremy's hands slipped out from between the two girls' bodies, reversed their orientation, and reinserted themselves, this time subjecting Stacy's nipples to their torturous pleasure. Stacy moaned and whimpered into Candace's mouth, and Candace felt Stacy's arms tighten around her as the girl reached behind Candace to grab two lusty handfuls of Jeremy's ass.
Candace could barely take it. Her every nerve ending was screaming in pleasure and begging for more; wetness from between her legs had soaked through her panties and was starting to course in droplets down her thighs; and her heart was beating so fast and so powerfully that it felt like it might burst at any moment.
She pulled her tongue out of Stacy's mouth.
"St- Stop!" Candace begged. "I can't- I can't take any more! I'll explode!"
Later, Candace would explain that "I'll explode" was something of an oversimplification of her concerns. Although actually, physically blowing to bits was not entirely outside the realm of possibility in her world, what she was really most concerned about was a scenario that presented itself in her head as a series of numbers: one out-of-control teenage girl literally tearing Jeremy and Stacy's clothes off; three writhing, thrusting, naked bodies on Stacy's living-room floor; and as many as two unplanned pregnancies, plus an infinite amount of remorse.
"You're- You're right," Stacy gasped, releasing her hold on Candace and Jeremy. "We need to...to calm down and...process this..."
“Okay,” Jeremy breathed, “okay. We’ll…we’ll just…Oh, wow…”
When they recovered their breath, Jeremy walked Candace home. They and Stacy had agreed that they would talk on the phone the next morning to figure out the next step.
Candace wasn’t sure what that would be, but she was really looking forward to finding out.
