Well I'm positively thrilled by the good response I got from this one. All feedback is welcome and will help me improve progressively, so to keep off-topic short, here we go again
Soon enough they reached their destination: a vast wood with a small road made out mostly of dirt with plants growing in the middle where the tire tracks didn’t reach them. Max slowly but steadily followed the road to what seemed to be someone’s house: an old-style log cabin with a small chimney made out of boulders that seemed like someone had pulled out of a magazine. Max honked a couple times, then pulled over “here we are you two, hope this helps you”
“Max! It’s been quite a while since I saw you!” said a charming and vivacious woman who seemed to be probably around her late twenties or early thirties as she rushed towards max to hug him. Long, black hair down to her back framed her otherwise pale face, with eyes neither green nor blue that sparkled curious, almost inquisitive. While not a teenager anymore, she certainly looked like she took good care, with a shape mostly resembling that of an hourglass, even if not too curvaceous. She seemed to have an unexplainably welcoming aura around her.
“Quite a while indeed, I think we last met at area fifty… “
“And who are these children with you?” the woman interrupted as she purposely stepped on Max’s foot, most likely trying to prevent him from spilling the beans, since she didn’t knew Ben and Gwen were fully aware of Max’s old job and duties.
“My nephews, the ones I talked you about: Benjamin and Gwendolyn. Kids, meet Astrid, a good friend of mine, you’ll be staying with her for a few days”
“WHAT!?” the cousins exclaimed after receiving the shocking news.
“Oh, so they’re the ones who can’t get along with each other right Max? Don’t worry; when you pick them up they will be like each other’s best friend” she replied confident as she put each of her hands on one of the cousins’ shoulders.
“No way I’m staying here!” Ben objected as he glared at the small log cabin; “I bet there’s not even electricity!”
“For the first time in my life, I must agree with the freak, we’re in the middle of nowhere for Ford’s sake” Gwen added obviously upset.
“Oh don’t worry, it’s much bigger than it looks” Astrid said in a calm and patient tone; “you two are not the first and certainly not the last ones to come here for a lesson on how to get along with each other; it’s just that I decided to take a break this summer but for max I can sure make an exemption!”
“Can’t thank you enough Astrid, I’ll come pick them up in a week; maybe two considering the “material” you’re given to work with” Max said as he waved goodbye.
“I’ll have these little brats behaving by then!” she answered as she joyfully waved back and watched the camper speed away.
“Wait! Don’t leave me here! And especially not with HER!” Ben shouted as he watched the same scene. Astrid just sighed and held on him by the wrist.
“Now, now, why are you so rude at your cousin Gwendolyn?” Astrid said in her usual calm voice.
“I prefer Gwen please” the redheaded girl replied in her self-sufficient tone, the one she used when she was not amused at all.
“Ok, so Gwen it is then! But don’t stay out here, come in! Come in!” Astrid said just as joyful as she turned back towards the house.
“Just for you to know, I blame you for all this” Ben said in a rough voice.
“The feeling is mutual” Gwen answered in the exact same tone.
“Ok, this is where I live” said Astrid as she showed them the interior of the cabin, which actually didn’t seem to be quite so bad at all; while it kept an old-fashioned style, she had pretty comfy looking furniture: a desk computer on a minimalist style shelf and a laptop charging on a desk, a big screen TV and the whole place seemed to have a pretty decent supply of electric energy as evidenced by the mostly directional LED lamps that glowed an elegant white right where light was needed
“Well, I must admit this place actually looks good” Ben said a little surprised
“Oh thank you!” Astrid said pleased; “however this small cabin can only house one person, so you two will have to take the basement”
“I KNEW it was too good to be true” Gwen said as she let out a quiet groan.
“Don’t worry Gwen; it’s not as bad as it sounds! I’m sure you will be pleasantly surprised, now follow me please” Astrid replied as she headed out to what seemed to be an elevator’s door.
“You have an elevator for the basement?” Ben asked surprised.
“Of course I do! Going down so many staircases would be tiresome” Astrid said as she pushed a button with “B1” labelled right next to it, and below there were “B2” and “B3”, Ben and Gwen started thinking Astrid’s basement was not just your average moisture-filled room. The elevator reacted and started descending without a sound.
“So, why do you hate each other so much?” Astrid asked them both.
“Because she’s annoying!” Ben answered without hesitation.
“It’s not that I hate Ben, he’s just so… immature” Gwen replied in a calm, snobbish voice as she crossed her arms on her chest.
“You want immature? I’ll show you immature!” Ben groaned as he reached out for the omnitrix, only to be stopped by Astrid’s hand.
“Now, now, behave Ben, you’re not here to fight, and Gwen you’re not here to provoke your cousin either; the sooner you two learn to get along, the better your stay here will be” said their tutor as the elevator’s door finally opened, leading to a large, clean hall surrounded by metallic doors equipped with what seemed to be digital key devices “here we are! Welcome to my basement kids, not what you expected huh?”
