Katara was in her room pouring over maps of the ocean. They were covered in grid lines and nearly all the boxes had X’s inside them. She moved her index finger over the last of the unmarked boxes. They were all concentrated just off the fire nation coast though she had explored several other areas in fire nation territories each time she had nearly been captured either way the risks were great but Aang must be there because no where else was left. She finally straightened her back then bent backwards slightly to work out any kinks she had acquired while studying her map. She turned and strode out of her room making sure to lock her door on the way out.
She had learnt long ago that running a pirate crew was not like commanding soldiers or having a family they were ruffians. That was a lesson she had learnt the hard way, walking out on deck she was greeted by several shout from the crew, her first mate though why they were called that she didn’t know ran up to her. He was an unassuming man with long brown hair, dark eyes and this week a dull yellow tunic with black pants. The harsh weather whipped his crudely tied hair around as waves crashed into the ship. Luckily Katara’s ship was of sturdy design and easily withstood the assault though the ocean, it did keep the sailor’s on their toes though it was nothing they haven’t experienced before.
“Ho! Captain, Where’s our next destination?” He spoke while checking her out; being careful to keep it subtle. They all had learnt that lesson and seeing your mate scream in agony because the captain simply flicked her wrist is the sort of education one does not forget. She wore a plain blue dress; it was simple in design with short sleeves to allow free arm movement, the bodice covering her bosom though it left little to the imagination, she bandaged her breast to restrict their movement, the hem went all the way down to her ankles though the dress had long slit cut up the sides to her waist also for mobility purpose, much to the pirates despair she had on underneath dark blue leggings. She wore seal’s fur over her shoulders to fend off the harsh winds of the sea; it also hanged over her back on top of the dresses material. Her hair had become more full, she still did keep it in a single ponytail, she retained her hair loops though now they were more natural no longer held by clips she had twined her front hair into ponytails then looped them to the back where they merged into one keeping the rest of her long hair in a manageable position. The feature that caught most people’s eyes was her scar though most would probably mistake it for a tattoo. Burned onto her right cheek was a mark that Azula had made especially for her. It was an odd combination of the fire nation and air nomad’s symbol, using the Air swirls tails to form the fire nation flames. She had decreed this represented the fire nation’s supremacy over the avatar and by extension all other nations. She watched the crew scramble around to keep the ship on course as she watched them she unconsciously raised her hand to her throat though her gran-grand’s necklace was gone she still reached for it.
“We will be moving into the fire nation, more specifically Iroh’s coast”
“B-b-but captain! That’s suicide! That coast is the most patrolled area in the fire nation and they have a whole fleet of ships on stand by, ready to move at a moments notice”She turned to him frowning slightly, staring at him straight in the eye. He held firm for several seconds before he looked away then started ordering the sailors to turn the boat towards the west. The evening winds played with the loose strands of her hair using it to tickle her face as she watched the vast ocean waves go to and fro. When one particular wave past she thought she saw a dark object on the water.
“Lookout, south east what do you see?” She shouted to the man in the bird’s nest of the ship.
“I don’t… Fire nation ship! Heading straight for us, their catapults are loaded and they are preparing to fire!”Cursing the man for letting them get so close without spotting them, Katara started shouting orders to the crew; she sprinted towards the ships prow and leaped onto a small platform on the front of the ship. The crew turned to face the new threat and began sailing straight for them hoping to get into close range to avoid the catapults. The fire ship realized they had been spotted and opened fire, launching a volley of burning rocks towards the pirate ship.
“Incoming!” The lookout shouted as the fireballs arc over the waves, Katara already aware of the attack had bent a wave into a turtle shell and frozen it over the top of her ship. The burning rocks deflected harmlessly off the shield, twirling her arms around her head like a disc she hurtled the frozen plate towards the offending ship. Just before it collided fire exploded from the deck as several fire benders combined to fend off her frontal assault. The attack how ever was a feint, she grabbed a wave that was moving behind the fire ship and raised it then aimed it at the sea vessel. The fire nation crew caught completely unaware as the huge wave crashed onto their ship sending several of the soldiers over board. The two ships were only a few feet away and closing. Her crew readied for battle as several drew weapons; grappling hooks tied to rope and stood anxiously on the port side of the deck while other stayed in place to maintain the ships course.
Katara stood her ground as they pulled up along side of her ship its height bearing down on her menacingly. Using the oceans water like a geyser she propelled herself onto the deck preparing to deal with what was left of the fire benders. Landing on the enemy’s ship before any of her crew she was instantly targeted by the remaining troops thankfully there was only half a dozen left on deck. Using the water from the geyser she solidified it into a frozen sphere about the size of a man’s head. Ducking under a quick fire thrust from one of the soldiers she then slammed the sphere into his chest propelling him off the deck and into the unforgiving waters of the ocean. A familiar clink sound reached her ears hailing the arrival of her men. Sensing a person behind her, she quickly leaped forward and rolled coming up facing her attacker. It was a large man wielding a spear which she had only avoided by the skin of her teeth, pulling the ice sphere back towards her at dangerous speed, she stood her ground as he too sprinted towards her spear pointed directly at her chest until she jumped backwards and flipped over the frozen ball and landing several meters behind. She was rewarded with a loud thump and the sound of bones breaking harmonized with a scream of pain as he too was pushed off the ship. The rest of the fire nation soldiers were preparing to rush her until they were cut down mercilessly by her forgotten crew. They then did what they liked best entered the enemy ship and played cat and mouse as they killed the remaining crew. Katara for her part was less enthusiastic so she waited on deck for them to finish their game. She spotted a new recruit struggling to climb onto the deck. He finally landed on the ships deck ass first as he looked around terrified, in his hand a dagger wriggled so badly it looked like it was trying to get away from him. There was scant light though she had adapted to the darkness long ago but judging by his stance and the fact he was squinting around he was obviously still had not.
“Oi Baby! If you’re too scared to kill, get me the maps from the bridge!” Her voice was harsh and loud but easily heard over the wind and waves.
“Why don’t you get it yourself! Lazy duck bear!” He shouted back ignorant of who had given him such an order.
Katara walked towards him at a brisk pace and saw him visibly cringe when he fell onto his ass again realizing that it was the captain who had spoken.
“Why did you join my crew brat?” she spoke cold and calm as she stood straight, her eyes froze his spine as he stammered out his answer.
“B-b-because I want to be a p-pirate” His eyes were already locked onto hers as visibly struggled to look else where.
“Well won’t that be a problem?” She asked sickly sweet as she crouched down in front of him, her face made him remember his mother’s as tears came to his face.
“W-what?” He replied
“When I have crucified you to my prow and left you there until a strong enough wave tears you from the nails that I have stabbed through your arms and legs” she spoke through the same sweet voice with the matching face.
“The only thing keeping you on my good side is that you are more convenient to me alive but as soon as I think you’ll be more worth as a lesson to the rest of the crew then your going to be drinking sea water got it!” He was speechless as he stumbled back on all fours then turned to run into the ship full of trained soldiers sprinting for his life.
Katara watched the fleeing kid no more than twelve running to his potential death. She once again leaned against the railing watching the ocean calm slightly. She looked towards her deadly weapon rolling on the deck and gestured as it rose to about waist height and floated gently towards her. She examined the blood that her latest opponent had obviously coughed up onto its reflective surface. The current image reflected onto its surface was the half moon hanging over the world remaining silent though bathed in blood none the less, she looked upwards staring at it with her own eyes. She stood like that for a while simply staring at the moon until she felt a rough arm encircle her upper arms and chest restricting her arm movement along with a knife that was pressed to her throat as disgustingly hot and foul breath was expelled onto her left cheek.
“Now, now lets not be too hasty, drop the ice or I will coat this deck in a new type of red paint get my drift” He spoke quite calmly, to further his point the blade was pressed more firmly against her throat drawing drops of blood. She dropped the ball and the knife force was lessened slightly allowing her room to breath.
“There’s a good girl now shout out to your crew to get back out here” “Why? want them to watch an execution?” She replied surprising the man with her complete lack of fear. No wonder she was known as the bloody ice queen. He drew a calming breath to settle his nerves and replied.“I won’t kill you love, not yet anyway” He spoke whilst rubbing his fore arm against her bosom.
“Who said it was my death they would see” she said in the same calm and fearless voice.
“Wha..?” he pulled back slightly and finally noticed the blood from her throat wound had not in fact dripped down instead it had pooled on the back of her neck.
“Oh that is why they call her the blood queen” Were his last thoughts as a bloody spike erupted from the blood.
The crew had finally killed all the soldiers on bored and were returning above deck with their loot of food, wine and more importantly valuables. The new kid finally stumbled onto the deck with several maps in his arms to find the men staring dumbfounded at something outside of the lights range. When his eyes finally adjusted he saw that a fire nation soldier was crucified with some sort of red material that seemed to easily hold him in place against the wind, waves and the continuous motion of the ship. They all stared though the older pirates had seen this sort of thing before and knew what it meant; it was a message from her. Never forget I can kill you with ease. The crew finally turned and leaped back onto their ship with the kid scrambled after them looking quite awkward with several large maps in his arms. He wasn’t as brave or strong as the rest so he used the ropes to get back down before they were collected by the first mate who then like the rest leaped straight onto their pirate vessel as it pulled away from the fire nation ship. Katara stalked up to the kid and collected the maps from him.
“Make sure we continue on our course aside from that I don’t care” She said to the first mate while walking back to her room with the maps under her arm. The men of course usually like to watch her go but the image of the fire nation soldier, still fresh in their minds deterred the less lecherous.
That night they partied to celebrate the recent heist of goods, it turned out the large crate was full of wine and the ship was once again well stocked with food. The captain was absent which didn’t surprise the crew, she rarely appeared at the parties. Some time during the night the kid found himself next to the first mate who was quietly sitting off to the side nursing a large tankard of ale. Finally mustering his courage he turned to the older man.
“Um, can I ask you a question?”
“What do you want Pip squeak?” he replied not taking his eyes from the main event which was several of the men trying to arm wrestle the largest amongst them together. “When I joined up I thought this crew was run by a man with a reptile bird” “Yeah you mean the old captain before she took control” he said still not turning his head. “Huh” “Yeah, she killed him about…” He made a raspberry as he recauled “About five and a half years ago along with several of the crew” “What? How? Why? ” the man finally turned away from the competition which several more men had jumped on the larger hoping to take him down.“Do you really want to hear the story of the rise of the Bloody Ice queen? Said to be able to make a man’s body so cold he will be frozen for several day and nights before he falls apart into bloody frozen chunks” he spoke in a low and menacing voice as he leaned in.
Letting out a loud gulp he nodded fearing the answer but curiosity spurring him on.
“Ok but don’t say I didn’t give you a chance” He took a long swig of his beer and then began the story.
“It all started when the old captain had started collecting slaves to sell…among other things. It was a special offer by the fire nation soldiers, turns out the members of the last rebellion weren’t completely wiped out, some were left alive marked and released so they would serve as a lesson for anyone else that thought of fighting the fire nation, I heard it was by order of Azula when she was the fire lord”
“That’s the mark on her cheek!” he butted in
“Yeah, She was in a cage by herself starving and dehydrated, the cage was specially marked as warning, do not feed or water the animal. She was as skinny as a sai blade and badly burnt. That was the reason no one had bought her, it was uncertain if she would even live”
“Then why did he buy her?” He interrupted again
“Turns out long ago she and the captain had crossed paths, she had stolen something from him and the captain if anything was a vindictive bastard so he bought her. Maybe he hoped to get what she stole back or he just wanted to get back at her I don’t know. All I know is after a year of enduring god knows what she finally snapped, that night screams erupted all over the ship as men begged for mercy and screaming that they were sorry. I was on deck with the first mate when we heard heavy foot steps behind us, we both turned to see her, pale as a ghost standing in front of us completely naked dragging the captain whose mouth was gagged with his own blood. Turns out she had exploded the blood in his tongue and frozen it to stop him screaming. She then made some weird gestures; the first mate rushed forward but exploded covering her in his blood. I fell back terrified she would kill me next but she simply ignored me as she dragged the captain towards the ships mast. She did more weird gestures and the blood that covered her body speared his arms and legs in several positions as it nailed him to the mast”
The kid felt his chest tighten and his fingers ache as he realized he was holding onto his ale too tight. He took a shaky sip of the fire water to calm his nerves as the first mate continued his story.“What was left of the crew stumbled up on deck nearly slipping in the gore that coated the deck, then she spoke with a cold and emotionless voice. It’s weird that I still remember it word for word. She stood there naked, the captain hanging over her like death and the waves rising and falling in the back ground. She said, I am the new captain of this ship and in case any of you have a problem with that. She waved her hand and the captains gag liquefied and he screamed his lungs out as she walked through the men who moved out of her way whilst several cautiously moved to get him down but as they neared he too exploded spraying blood and gore over everyone” He finished the tale in a soft voice forcing the new recruit to lean forward and oblivious to anything around him. This caused him jump and call out when the group had piled so many on the bench broke. The first mate laughed out loud at the young boys fear and took a final swing of his ale before turning in for the night.
Katara for her part was already asleep though the slightest noise that was out of place would wake her up in an instant. The unfortunate side effect of spending half a decade on a pirate ship, she was slightly paranoid.
The next day Katara was standing on deck watching the morning sun. Several of the pirates grumbled as they went about their jobs but smart enough to keep it quite so as not to aggravate her. She didn’t really have to be on deck but she found the feel of sun on her face with her eyes closed in the morning made the coming day more bearable. A shadow past over her face blocking the sun, she opened her eyes as the messenger hawk fluttered down and dug it’s claws deeply into her shoulder thankfully her seal’s fur protected her from it’s piercing talons. She raised her hand be withered as to who would be contacting her. The bird leaned forward allowing easier access to it’s package, She flicked off the lid and pulled out the scroll. Unrolling it as the bird maintained it’s position probably hoping she would feed it. She read her brothers hand writing hoping to decipher it without the need for her decoder out of desire to stay in the sunshine but alas it was fruitless. Letting out a deep sigh she turned and strode back inside and navigated the ships maze of corridors to her own room. Finally she settled down onto her desk, pulled out the decoder scroll and began deciphering Sokka’s letter. The bird fluttered onto a stand and began pecking at the stocked food container.
Her hand holding the feather brush went limp as she looked at the finished product of her activity. Simply staring at the sheet in disbelief, she couldn’t bring herself to moved or utter a sound as she sat in her chair holding her breath as she reread the message.
Katara
The Avatar has returned along with his sky bison. You know where we are stationed, be careful, Fire nation troops will have occupied the city by the time you get this. I do not believe they know of his return.
Sokka
She snapped out her stupor and sprinted out of her room and back onto deck.
“Furl the sails and turn this ship north!” She shouted as she stood in the middle of the deck preparing her mind and body for what she had planned. Screw Sokka though saying, Along with his air bison was obviously his way of saying that it was Aang and not a rebirth. The pirates were startled at her orders but quickly scrambled realizing if she was shouting they better move it. The sails were quickly raised and tied as the ship turned a sharp right causing several people fall over. Once the preparations were complete all the men turned to her wondering why she had suddenly stormed onto deck ordering them to change course but she was preoccupied. Using a simple raising motion with her hands she pushed the water under her ship up and then pushed it forward dangerously fast. The crew yelped in surprise as the ship tilted downwards threatening to drop them into the sea as they were propelled forward at phenomenal speeds. All but Katara had managed to get below deck though walking there was extremely difficult it beat being on the deck. Katara for her part was frozen to the spot literally and maintained her stance as she pushed the wave as fast as she was capable of. Her mind raced: had he flew there from her unmarked areas, never left there or had he been captured by the fire nation all this time. Questions raced through her mind for him but right now all that mattered was that she gets there faster and with that thought she pushed the wave harder.
