Chapter One
The spring mountain air smelled of fresh apple blossoms and the clear sky above was bluer than a newborn baby's young eyes. Flying bison soared overhead, looking as if they were fluffy white clouds coming down to frolic amidst the flowering trees. The grass was so green and the bubbling brooks flowed to the tune of tranquil serenity.
Monk Gyatso's pale yellow robes gently fluttered about his lithe frame as he descended a high flight of spiraling stone steps. His silk slippers knew the path he was taking so well, he didn't really have to walk it with his eyes open. He could simply make his way down them with both his eyes closed firmly shut.
"Going to check on the little ones again, huh, Gyatso?" A fellow monk in yellow asked. Even though his teeth were crooked, his bright smile illuminated his aged face as if light was shining out from deep within him.
The oldest monk on the mountain nodded his bald head, giving the slightly younger monk a kind smile in return. "I am at that, Lu," he replied, stopping before the ascending monk on the steps. "How is your hip? Not racing down the mountain in barrels today are we?"
"Oh, good heavens no," the bright monk laughed, shaking his head before opening both his eyes wide. "Today we're merely jumping off and seeing who can take the longest to reach the bottom. I do hope my narcolepsy behaves."
Master Gyatso chuckled right along with him. He had no doubt that the morning would be very exciting. He just hoped Master Lu would wake up in time to hit the bottom. The old monk would be very disappointed if he missed it.
The two waved each other off and he continued onwards to the temple nursery. A couple baby bison soared past him, chasing after a startled winged lemur.
He made his way across the fountain courtyard, up a flight of rounded steps, and down an open hallway. Upon arriving at the nursery, he stopped and admired the way the morning sunlight was streaming in through the clear windows.
The spacious room was round, filled with all manner of toys, and had a high domed ceiling made of painted glass. Each of the many murals held an image of something to be found in nature.
A winged lemur had its head stuck in a pink melon. A flying bison was all curled up amidst some green clovers and had a blue butterfly on its nose. Another picture held a blood red rose blooming under the light of a pale silver moon. There were so many pictures for ones eyes to get lost in.
Only three babies resided here. The biggest one had been born ten pounds and the smallest had weighed in at six pounds.
The largest of the three had a head of wild white hair and his eyes were an impish green. The girl had dark, curly hair and her eyes were blacker than a moonless night.
They were brother and sister. But, it was the smallest baby that seemed to really pull people inwards like a magnet.
He was so small and pale as fresh fallen snow. When he opened his little eyes, they were either grey one minute or a light brown the next and they were as warm and inviting as a winter's fire. His little ringlets had the color and luster of polished oak. When he cried, it was almost musical.
"Good morning, Toya. Good morning, Lei. Good morning, tiny Aang."
He gently tickled Toya's little foot, wiped some sleep away from Lei's eyes, and playfully poked Aang on the very tip of his little nose. It wouldn't be long before their breakfast would be brought in.
Three sets of completely different colored eyes gazed up at him. He just smiled right down at them.
Toya scrunched up his face and then gurgled happily, while Lei seemed to be looking at everything she could put her eyes to. Aang yawned and made little tiny fists, swinging them around in tiny circles.
Master Gyatso beamed.
Could one of them be the Spirit of the Earth born into flesh and blood? Could one of them possibly be the very vessel which houses the powers of every element?
"It would be a great honor to be the one who has changed the Avatar's diapers," he spoke, knowing Toya was going to be a terror. Those green eyes looking up at him held much mischievousness.
Aang chirped and Lei began to make a fuss. Someone wanted her bottle and she wanted it now.
"Feeding time!" A voice called out and Master Gyatso turned to see that it was Master Ping who had the bottles this morning. The wizened monk didn't look too happy about it either.
"Good morning, Ping."
"G." Ping greeted, placing the bottles down on the table beside the baby crib.
"Whatever is the matter?"
"Oh, nothing," Ping replied, placing both his hands on his bony hips. He pursed his thin lips and let his large nostril's flare like a dragons. "Not a thing. I was only merely upon the threshold of enlightenment when some darn fool came barreling down the lotus path, yelling that it was I who is on bottle and diaper duty today."
"Shameful," Gyatso shook his head. "No respect."
Ping's left eye twitched. "I was this close to Nirvana, G." The old monk snapped, holding up his thumb and index finger just to indicate the closeness. "This close!"
Lei suddenly screamed and all three babies began to wail in unison.
Both monks tripped over the other.
"What do I do?" Ping cried, pulling on his twisty beard. "How do you shut it off?"
Master Gyatso picked Lei up and began to feed her from the bottle. Ping quickly followed suite with Toya almost immediately.
Aang fell silent when the other two babies did, even though he had no bottle yet. He blinked around, happily gurgling as if it had all been some kind of fun yelling game.
"Curious," Master Gyatso whispered, continuing to feed Lei. "Very curious."
Ping stuck out his tongue. "This one needs a change."
Gyatso snorted under his breath. "I'll feed Aang then."
Ping grumbled and muttered to himself.
Gyatso finished feeding Lei and gently burped her. He placed her back in the crib and took up a giggling Aang.
"Here you are," he said, giving him the warm bottle. "Drink up."
"I could be floating happily about in Nirvana right now, sipping from blue lotuses with the Benevolent Ones," Master Ping ranted much to Gyatso's amusement. "But, no! I'm stuck here having to change Mr. Poopy Pants."
Toya chirped and then peed right in the monk's face.
Gyatso quickly spun around, holding his breath. If he so much as twitched, he'd howl right there.
Yep.
That boy was going to be a handful.
Aang squeezed the warm bottle with both his little hands, sucking the bison milk from it. Flying bison milk is far more nutritious than a human mother's milk.
Gyatso wished they could stay small and innocent forever. But, the world forever spins forward.
Babies grow up.
Responsibilities fall on them.
Innocence is replaced with harsh knowledge.
Life will teach them that the world is not always a bright and happy place.
He vowed their childhoods would be happy ones. They would know love and peace. They would learn it was worth protecting.
He gazed out the window as Ping fussed over Toya. The sky was beautiful and clear, but he could sense a storm was ever so slowly gathering in strength.
The wind traveled everywhere and it whispered of many dark things.
He would keep such whispered from ever reaching the ears of the children for as long as he could. No child should know worry or fear.
"Come along, Master Ping," he said, placing a now full and happy Aang back down in his crib. "Let us go check on my pies. They should be about ready to frost and launch."
"Gladly," Ping said, fleeing from the room with empty bottles and dirty diapers in hand.
Master Gyatso followed after.
Both never saw Aang and Toya turn over and stare into each other's very different eyes before Toya burped and put his head down in sleep. Toya's sister was already asleep and Aang chirped up at the ceiling, waving his tiny hands around in twister-like motions.
A misty shape took form over the baby, twisting, serpentine and shimmering like amethyst lightning. What could have been a tongue gently tickled the baby's soft cheek, making Aang giggle as his little hands tried to grasp the glittering shape above him.
"Hush little baby," a light, airy voice sang as a large shadow passed over Aang's eyes. "Don't save the world."
