~Two
She was in bed when he returned that night. He had waited outside for her to retire to their bedroom. Their sleeping arrangement was the only time she was nervous. Aang only had one bedroom and he would sleep nowhere else. Many of the townspeople spoke of their sleeping arrangements as if they knew that the Avatar was defiling the princess for them. He did no such thing. Azula would remain unknown to man, for as long as he was alive.
He walked into his darkened home full from the dinner Ming prepared. She was a gracious host as always. He did not mind her fussing over him or hanging onto him as they walked through the town after dinner. She was a beautiful woman now that she was older. He knew what she wanted but he had a duty to do and she would have to find another.
Aang walked into his bedroom to find the fallen princess turned away from him and sleeping. She had done a lot of work after he had left. She almost finished planting the north side of his land without his help. There was one thing admirable about Azula. When she told you, she would do something she meant it.
The Avatar began to undress watching the curve of the body laying in his bed shift with sleep. He removed everything except his loincloth. Azula’s discovery that he slept in the nude did not go over well and he decided to avoid another ear piercing, screaming wake up call.
He carefully slipped into the warm bed and moved towards the middle where he liked to sleep. He lay on his back and stared at the sleeping princess beside him. Maybe he should kill her and end this torture for the both of them. She seemed unable to cope with the situation. They had only been together for four days; he could not expect her full compliance so easily. The more he stared at her sleeping form he realized he would never have her full compliance.
The bed slightly moved as the former princess turned towards him still in deep slumber. She always complained he was trying to push her out of the bed because he slept in the middle. Her body accidently touched his and her eyes flew open.
“What… Do you have to sleep right in the middle of the bed?”
“This is where I sleep.”
Azula sat up. “I have but three inches of mattress left while you have a whole bed on your side. If you just slide over, I could sleep without touching you and save us both the horror of it.”
He stared at her face seeing the soot still there but at least her hair was down and laying on the bed even as she sat up. There was no reason to cut it she was no longer of royalty. Her eyes held anger and he did not care.
“You are welcome to the floor.”
He watched the anger build to uncontrollable levels and finally she snapped. She attacked him but he grabbed her wrist and flung her over his body and onto the bed beside him. His body smashed on top of hers as she continued to fight him.
“Is this how you plan on keeping your head?” His voice sounded angry but Azula had already lost interest in him. She began to twist and arch beneath him as she screamed out in pain. Aang held her down for only a second before moving away from her. She reached for her right calf as she pointed her toes and massaged the growing cramp in her leg.
Aang watched her body stiffen in pain for a few seconds longer before taking over amid her avid protests. Her nails dug into the muscles on his arm as he massaged the calf with more power. Her cursing of his name was loud and clear as he worked the cramp from her calf. She had done more than just plant the north side of his land. She had worked herself to exhaustion. He continued to massage her calf until all her fight drained away from her body and she relaxed on the bed.
Her breathing was heavy as she recovered her strength. “You caused that pain.”
“Of course I did.” Aang lay down beside her and watched her close her eyes. She said nothing more, as she drifted into sleep. He needed to help her more he knew that much. He did not want this to become a nightly ritual. That was all he needed was a rumor about him touching Azula. The townspeople already fantasized about them. She never went into town because of it. He would do whatever he had to, to keep their relationship nonexistent.

The hot sun was the first indication to Azula that morning had arrived. The second was the feeling that someone was watching her. She turned her head towards the offensive figure looking down at her and stared through her thick dark hair with one eye visible. What did he want now?
The dark hair obscured his view of her face. She made no move to clear her vision and why should she; she never wanted to listen to what he had to say anyway. The one eye he could see stared at him with contempt. This was something he was used to seeing early in the morning. “I have run out of seeds we have to go to into town.”
The hair covering her face suddenly flew back and the scowl that he was used to seeing came into view. Azula sat up holding the sheets to her breasts even though she wore a nightgown. “We, why do I have to go with you; they are not safe when I am around, remember them telling you that Avatar?”
Aang walked around the bed and towards a cabinet that housed some of his clothing. He removed the sweat-drenched shirt he wore with his back towards her. “You are not safe here alone.”
A smirk appeared on the princess’s face. “When has my safety become a concern of yours? I am sure that Meng tells you every day that you should end your suffering by ending my life. You two could be together and everyone would be so happy and free.”
Aang smiled as he continued looking for a decent top. “You know her so well.”
He heard the sheets rustle and the soft footsteps of his wife approaching. She reached around him and snatched a blue kimono. “Isn’t she the perfect woman to mother your children; so full of compassion and righteousness?”
He turned to face her as she finished smoothing down the fabric over her body. When her eyes met his there was fire glowing in them. She hated Meng for her campaign to have her ran out of town or killed. Although, Aang diffused most of her talk he knew that Meng desperately wanted the princess gone.” I do not know how you can say those words without internal combustion.”
“I don’t know how you can remain sane around all these peasants you call good people. All they do is use you for your power. I do not know why you are blind to that. Is that how you please your ego by having them call on you all hours of the night and day?”
Her smile made him frown. She stood tall and straight before him unafraid to be in the bedroom with him now in broad daylight. “Now you are brave. Tell me come nightfall will you speak to me this way or will you avoid me all together.”
Azula stepped back feeling him crowding her space as he took a step towards her. She had not noticed his bare chest before because anger clouded her thoughts of such things. He was not the small boy she remembered. He was a man, a tall and powerful, force that at this moment was trying to make her feel weak. She was not weak and she would not let him see her fear about being alone with him in the moonlight. “I already know the touch of a man and you could never compare to that.”
Aang began to smile. “The Emperor’s daughter knows no such thing. You are the bloodline of greatness and nothing but greatness will ever know you. There is no way Ozai would allow anyone to soil his legacy with common seed. You would never lower yourself to submit to a man any less great than you are. You will never know why women cry in pleasure in the night.”
Aang moved closer as she backed away. “You have placed yourself in the same situation Avatar. You will never know another woman than those you have ruined so far.”
She tried to move by him but he blocked her path.
“Meng is willing.”
Azula stopped cowering away from him and stood her full height before him. She looked up into his face with dark angry eyes. “You are the bloodline of greatness. If you wish to soil your blood with hers then you are a waste of power. Surely, the Avatar has better taste than a peasant girl with bad hair.”
Appa snorted outside the window seeing his master advancing towards the warm female he liked rubbing against when Aang was gone. He helped her move the dirt so she could plant. He knew that they did not like each other; he could smell it on them both. He did not want Aang to hurt her.
The big white furry head of Appa came through the window as Aang pressed Azula to the wall with his body. The sudden head butt from the beast got his master’s attention. Aang looked from the angry woman pushing against his body to the nosy animal. He moved away from her body and stared down at her “Hurry up and wipe that soot off your face. I cannot have my wife looking like a peasant in town.”
~~~~~~~~~~
She had never ridden on the air beast before but she hoped it would become a regular experience. She closed her eyes and let the wind blow around her. She forgot most of her problems as soon as the beast lifted into the sky. She did not hold on as tight as she had in the beginning. She knew Appa would not let her fall. However, Aang was a different matter.
He watched her out of the corner of his eye. She was enjoying the flight, even smiling as Appa dipped and moved side to side. She looked approachable when she smiled. She looked beautiful, like a princess. Appa snorted and began to dive causing a giggle from his royal passenger. Aang turned and looked back at her only to see her open her eyes and stare at him with contempt.
~~~~~~~~~~~
“I do not need your help to get down.” She tried to remove his hands from her waist but that was impossible. The people watched as the Avatar forced her down from the saddle. She pulled away from him and straightened her clothing as the townspeople stared at her.
It had been several months since they had seen the princess. At that time, she was in chains awaiting her punishment from the Avatar. Her appearance had changed dramatically. Now, she stood before them as a beautiful woman with long windswept hair and contempt for her husband. Murmurs began in the crowd as soon as Azula looked up to see them staring. She heard snickering and saw the men smiling at the Avatar with knowing looks. She knew she would hate coming here.
“Finally you let her out of that bed.” The straw chewing freedom fighter smirked at the blue clothed princess, as he looked her over. She was as beautiful as the stories about her said. He did not like the fact that Aang had her all to himself. He should share the humiliation of Azula with everyone the fire nation harmed.
The princess frowned at him and he liked that. She had a fight that he would have to beat out of her but he liked that too. He also liked the fact that the Avatar was not amused with his words. Aang was not one of his favorite people. They had different views about how to destroy the fire legacy. Jet was even beginning to believe that he married Azula to keep her out of his hands. “I see he is dressing you well. You looked appetizing in this.”
“There is nothing appetizing about you.” Her threatening voice made him tingle with anticipation of making her scream for mercy. A smile crossed his lips as he removed the straw.
“No need for insults princess we can be friends if you let nature take its course.” Jet began walking towards her continuing to look her up and down.
Aang moved in front of her, which caused Azula to move back. She could feel something moving inside of him that was never present when they argued. It was something she knew very well. It was hate, it was anger, and it meant harm to this man standing before them.
“She is my responsibility Jet and I expect you to respect that. If you cannot I am not above instructing you about it.”
The straw fell to the dirt. “You always assume I am up to no good.”
“You have never shown any other reason for your living here. Stay away from my wife and we shall have no further contact.” Aang turned towards Azula and ushered her towards the teahouse down the street.
“What if I miss your company?” The menace in his voice was unmistakable. He wanted to challenge Aang in front of everyone. The Avatar held his power as he continued walking away with his wife securely in his arms.
This was an abomination to be this close to him. She could barely walk much less breathe. She stumbled along until he lifted her from the ground with his arm around her waist. He was being ridiculous just because of one man. “Do you really think I wish to be this close to you in public or anywhere else?”
She struggled to get free but he was not giving an inch. She was smashed to his side and half carried down into the teahouse. He stopped at a suitable table and let her go. Azula instantly moved to the other side of the table. A smile crossed his face as she sat down. Aang took his seat and continued smiling at her discomfort from all the people staring at her, especially the men.
He watched her fidget with her hair that always seemed to be where she did not want it. She pulled it out of the front of her clothing and placed in behind her back. The rest of the hair went behind her ears. She looked over at him seeing that his smile had disappeared.
“Avatar it is good to see you again.” The older woman smiled down at Aang and Azula as she approached the table.
“Thank you it is good to see you also Hifa. May we trouble you for some breakfast?”
“It will be no trouble.” She turned and walked away from them still smiling.
The other patrons in the teahouse continued to stare at Azula as she frowned at them. The only thing keeping them from attacking her physically or verbally was the Avatar. She hated to admit it but he was all she had to remain unmolested. He knew it. He just wanted her to see what he knew was truth. She was all alone.
Her gaze returned to Aang who now wore the smile again. “Even though she smiled at me I am sure you will have to taste my food so they do not poison me.”
Aang chuckled at her. A smile graced her lips as he chuckled. He did have a sense of lightness about him sometimes she hated to admit. She missed laughing; she just did not want it to be with him.
Something crashed a few feet away from them. A small fire began on top of the table and the man there looked at Aang asking for help. It was a child size fire; the man himself could extinguish it.
Azula leaned across the table eyeing Aang with a smirk on her face. “It would take at least half of the ocean to put that out.”
“Or to drown you beneath it,” Aang returned quickly with a smirk of his own.
A child next to the blaze poured his water onto it and extinguished it. He smiled at his accomplishment but those in the teahouse were no longer interested in the fire; their gaze centered on the heavy flesh of Azula’s breasts, pressing the fabric down in the front of her kimono, and exposing some the golden skin of her breasts they thought the Avatar tasted every night.
Aang followed their gaze and reached up to close the opened front. Azula’s hands covered his as she sat back. He released his hold on the fabric just as a waiter arrived with their meals. Aang glared at the men surrounding them and they turned away from the scene.
~~~~~~~~
She arranged the supplies in the seating section on the back of Appa, as Aang placed them up top. He had bought so much as if he did not intend on returning to town. He had even bought a flower that he knew grew outside the fire nation’s palace where Azula lived. It was a carnivorous plant. It would greatly diminish the pests that plagued other gardens in the valley. She could not wait to get home to plant it. She had the perfect spot for it.
“Aang,”
She wondered when Meng would show up. She was sure someone would inform her that the Avatar was in town. She looked as if she barely finished dressing before rushing to the square. Aang continue placing the supplies on Appa as Meng approached.
“I see you are packing heavy.” She smiled up at him as he looked down at her.
“We have much to do before planting season ends.” Aang turned away from her and did not see the frown on her face. She was stuck on the word we and could not move away from it.
“Will I see you for dinner then?”
Aang looked up at Azula as she slid the heavy bag of seed to her right and then pulled her hair out of her way. He never noticed before how long it had gotten or that she needed, something to keep it back since she seemed unwilling to admit it sometimes was a problem. “No, the princess and I will dine together tonight.”
She was staring at him with an unreadable expression. Azula seemed unsure until he saw her eyes divert towards Meng below. He knew her sinister smile and she was using it now to its full power. He could feel the anger coming from Meng even when she smiled at him as he turned to face her. Jet moved towards the party and smiled up at Azula. Aang turned back to see the princess frown for a moment then chuckle at something. Meng hid the small blade she showed Azula before Aang turned around. The Avatar turned back to see Jet walking away from Appa. Aang climbed up into the saddle as Azula sat back and continued to assert her dominance over the frowning woman below until Appa took flight.
The thought of her enjoying anything about Jet angered him beyond reason. What should it matter if she found him pleasing? It should not but it did. He could not even bear his enemy finding common ground with this man.
“That was not very nice of you to bait her like that.” He waited until they were high in the clouds to discuss her behavior. Aang slightly turned to see her sitting back and enjoying the wind swirling around her. She looked like a fire goddess with her hair flying around her body.
“Ask me if I care?”
He heard the smile in her voice and the anger inside grew. “You know that there are only two of us who can fly.”
The fire nation princess moved the hair from her face and crawled towards Aang in the front saddle. “True only you and Appa can fly but I am the only one who can cook for you tonight.”
“I can still go to Meng after you fall to the earth below.”
Azula placed her hand on his back and smiled.
“Fortunately for me I know your kind.”
Through all her words of criticism and harm, he had always held his temper but her touch sent him over the edge. Aang released the reigns and turned to face Azula. She looked shocked when he grabbed her hand and forced her onto her back beside the sacks of seeds and the pheasants in cages. She stared up at him with wide and fearful eyes. “You do not know me. You think as your father did. He thought he was superior to everyone but he was not was he? “
Her heavy breathing pushed her chest into his. Her fear turned into anger at the mentioning of her father. He might have thought she mourned his death but she did not. She mourned her own doom that he left to her because of his actions. “She is to blame for all your problems and mine. Why do you constantly defend her actions? How could anyone want a woman without any sense of loyalty? I thought you were smarter than that. I guess I do not know you.”
He moved his face closer to hers forcing Azula to turn away. “Should I expect this aggression tonight princess? We are still under the law that we must consummate our union to make it legal. I might have treated you with care before but if you continue to anger me princess there is no person upon this earth that will stop me from carrying out the sentence the people willed for you.”
His lips touched her cheek as the menacing words poured from them. Why was he so angry? She was sure it was not because of Meng. She had said far worse things than that about her. What had happen before they left? Was this due to Jet’s appearance? Did he think she found the man appealing? “I do not know why you are so angry with me but I do know Meng has nothing to do with it.”
She slowly turned her head to look up at his dark eyes. His lips still hovered close to hers creating anxiety that she had never known. “She showed me a knife and put it to her throat to tell me that she would kill me and I laughed because we both know how fast lightening can travel. I know you do not care for her as she cares for you. So tell me what has made you angry with me now.”
He watched her labor to get air but still he did not move. She spoke the truth. He knew when she was lying her hair would suddenly become interesting to her. Perhaps his actions were miscalculated. Aang lingered on her body for a while longer before removing himself completely. He heard her intake of air and turned to see her hand resting on her flat stomach, as she lay where he left her,with her eyes closed.
~~~~~~~~~~
She was exceptional at cursing. It brought a smile to his face knowing she could cut anyone down at a moment’s notice. He watched for the fourth time as she angrily moved her hair behind her ears and back so, she could move the supplies towards the southern field for planting. Aang leaped from Appa and removed the belt from his top as he walked towards her.
She felt his hands in her hair first as he carefully gathered the thick mass of dark hairs into a ponytail. He gently wrapped his belt around it, and tied it into a knot. He picked up two bags of the heavy seed and walked towards the southern field, leaving her to stare after him.
