Her dream perplexed her and caused her brow to crinkle even in her sleep. Terrible yelling and tears filled her mind. There was so much chaos and pain running through her body. A small whimper escaped her as she tossed and turned trying to escape the tempest in her dream.
Although the feelings of despair smothered her, the constant gentle prodding upon her body began to take over her dream until finally the tempest inside of her began to fade away. The prodding grew more insistent and she began to wake.
“Why are you here and where are the others?”
The harsh voice caused her to sit up quickly and focus her eyes on the angry golden ones staring at her. Of all the islands she had to land on it had to be his. Katara stared at him with her mouth agape and shock on her face.
Damn she was beautiful, he thought as she stared at him with shock. His momentary anger forgotten as his gaze swept down her body to make sure she did not have any injuries. The provisions in the boat did not escape his gaze. She had run away from the Avatar.
All those days and nights he watched her fake admiration for the young man who saved them from Ozai, culminated into this great escape. She could not fool him. No matter how hard she tried to keep her emotions out of their politics, he could feel her longing to be with him. She fought against her feelings until another woman came to stake her claim for his attention.
He watched her transform into a jealous creature the instant the princess lightly touched his hand. He was not an innocent catalyst. He promoted the contact with any woman that came to his palace. He watched her frown and walk away from him when he thought it prudent to display affection in front of her. He felt her anger and lust building as the months passed. He hoped she would crack and fall into his bed where she belonged. All his deceptions steered her towards him, she could not fight him for much longer.
However, it did not happen, as he wanted. The Avatar arrived at his home and the balance of power began to change. She lavished her attention on the young man whenever he was around. Zuko discovered his own anger watching Aang touch her hair and call her beautiful. He did not hide his disappointment when they were together.
It was not a well thought out plan on her part. The dangerous game began to backfire against her as the Avatar’s affections began to avalanche. What she thought of as false love Aang took as real and her world began to close in on her. The talk about their love began to grow and swell until the talk of marriage began to rear its head.
He could feel her suffocating but did nothing to save her. They had both caused this situation, being unable to speak what they felt for each other. Tortured by their own hands, each had to escape from the world they created unaided by the other.
He waited for weeks for her to deny that the love she portrayed to the Avatar was false. She got some form of pleasure watching his anger when the villagers spoke of their happiness. She was blind to her predicament. She did not have the strength to hurt Aang.
Zuko finished his exploration of her body realizing that this woman before him was stronger than he thought. She defied those whom she loved. Although it was in secret, it was now knowledge that she deserted the Avatar.
Katara’s heart sank and soared at the same time. He looked annoyed at her presence. She had no doubt he would figure out that she escaped the boat and think it had something to do with him. He always thought that way. He always thought she harbored some feelings for him. The mistake of allowing him to kiss her one night caused all the problems she had now.
There was no way she could stay here with him. She did not trust herself around him anymore. She should have never accepted the post he offered her, it kept her too close to him. All her time spent near him was like poison, once he got into her mind her body was sure to succumb from his drug.
Where was her strength? She had Aang and his constant attention. Maybe he suspected her feelings for the emperor were more than just friendship and this proposal of marriage was his way of keeping her away from Zuko. Maybe this was his fault that she left him and the others to worry about her condition.
It was a lie. She caused this. She ran away. She left Aang and the others.
No, it was Zuko’s fault. He paraded his women in front of her as if he did not care about her feelings. He kissed her! Was she nothing to him just another pair of lips for him to feast on? He saw the looks she gave him. The softness of her heart was there for him to see. She hated him. She hated what he made her feel. He would smile at her. It was not a pleasant smile but it made her belly tumble and her legs weak. She was an idiot.
She wanted her revenge and Aang became her victim. She made sure Zuko felt all the feelings of betrayal and anger that she felt. She watched his destructive force grow and then Aang proposed marriage to her at a dinner honoring the local and world leaders. The realization of what she was doing slapped her in the face. What drove her to act this way? How could she use her friend for her own selfishness?
Katara began pulling her body up in the boat and prepared to get out.
“What, why are you here I thought you were going to the Pro…”
Zuko’s eyes reverted to her face hearing her breathless speech. “Where is the ship?”
Katara looked out onto the water quickly then back at him. “I don’t know.”
He stared at her for a long while, as the water crashed upon the rocks around them. The weight of their situation began to materialize as the silence between them grew. There was no one to stop them now. She escaped for a reason and fate told him it was for him.
Her eyes took stock of his shirtless body and the wet hair sticking to his shoulders and face. Her body heaved as she tried to catch her breath. She was in danger and she knew it.
“I’ll go somewhere else,”
Katara quickly got out of the boat and tried to push it back into the water. She felt his heat before she saw him move towards her. She tried to ignore him and continued pushing the boat. He grabbed her wrist and pulled one hand away from the boat.
The rumbling from the sky above told of the coming storm heading their way. Zuko raised his head to see the black clouds on the horizon filled with lightening and winds. Fate again answered his need to keep her with him by providing this storm.
Feelings of dread and desire ran through her body as he returned his gaze to her. His eyes began to darken as he pulled her closer to his body. What was he planning on doing with her?
“You will not get far in this storm. I have shelter to keep us dry.”
Katara could not speak. Her body had a mind of its own being this close to his heat. She felt weak and mindless. She could barely breathe and only mustered a nod to his statement. She numbly walked behind him as he led her by the wrist from the beach. Her thoughts jumbled in her head. Could she so easily forget the feelings of pain she caused Aang and then be so compliant with Zuko?
She stumbled over a few rocks and caused him to look back at her. She saw that smile on his face; it was not a pleasant smile. It made her rip her wrist from his grasp. She raised her chin at him as a form of strength. She wanted to show him he had no power over her she would not succumb to him.
“I am not some child you need to lead around by the hand.”
Zuko stopped walking and faced her noticing the resolve in her body. She was gearing up for a fight. She planned to prolong their agony and never allow fate to run its course. She wanted to deny what she felt for him, as he wanted to deny what he felt for her. So be it, he was prepared to fight and win.
“No, you are not. You will be the woman who broke the Avatar’s heart with false love and hope. I do not think many of us ever recover from that kind of betrayal.”
Thunder cracked the sky and the rain began to pelt their bodies as they stared at each other. Neither of them wanted to give the other any form of weakness and get out of the rain.
Katara’s heartbeat pounded at unimaginable speed as his words rumbled around in her head. She knew what they would call her. She just did not want him to say it. She wiped the water from her face with her hands and turned away from him. She began walking towards the tree line to find shelter.
She felt his hand grip her wrist and tried to pull away again but this time he would not allow it.
“I have shelter!” His voice boomed over the rumbling thunder.
She tried to pull away again but he pulled her back towards him. “I do not want or need your shelter!” She wiped her face again trying to stop her progress towards him.
Zuko yanked on her arm and pulled her into his chest. Katara screamed when he threw her over his shoulder and began walking in the opposite direction.
The storm began to gather strength and the down pouring of rain intensified. She could feel her clothing absorbing the moisture as Zuko negotiated the narrow path to his shelter. Whatever he hoped to accomplish with his show of goodwill was lost on her. She would never forgive him for his words even if they were true. He was the cause of this situation and she would make sure he knew what he had done.
She did not struggle in his arms and he knew why, she would wait until she was on sure ground to fight. She would blame him for her problems when it was her own fault. Even if he told her that he wanted her, she would not come to him. It angered him she did not immediately come to his bed when so many would in her position. They shared a kiss and he knew she wanted to be with him but she would not come to him. He wanted her to suffer for denying him. He wanted her to regret not coming to him. He wanted her… still.
She felt her feet touch dry ground and immediately moved away from him. “When this storm is over I am leaving here.”
“I would have it no other way. I cannot have a woman with a reputation like yours sharing space with me.”
The veil on her emotions began to fall as his slow smile began to show itself. “As I hear you are use to such women. They are the only ones who fall for your weak methods of seducing the fairer sex.”
Thunder filled the silence between them. His smile evaporated as hers complimented her beautiful face. The water maiden waved her hand across her body and the water from her clothing fell to the ground. She did not take her eyes from him as he moved closer to her. Steam came from his body as the water vaporized from his body. He stood before her for a moment and then walked into another room.
Katara continued to wear her smile with her small victory. She knew he would have something horrible planned for her tomorrow but for now, she was safe. She would rest here until the rain ended and then leave as soon as she could.
Zuko watched her watching the rain from the open balcony in the front room. She had no idea what he knew about seducing a woman. The slow smile from earlier crossed his face again. She had no idea what lengths he would go to show her what he knew about seducing.
