“Prince,”
The bowed heads of the fireguards greeted Zuko that morning as he walked down the long hallway that led to the banquet hall. Ozai expected him to have breakfast with him every morning and Zuko was the obedient son.
The guards fell in behind him as he passed. As he came closer to the hall, the large black doors opened for him and Ozai ended his conversation with Azula abruptly to watch his son walk into the room.
He was every bit the conqueror as the reports of his battles against the other nations described. He wore all black. The symbol of trust that the color portrayed magnified in Ozai’s heart whether it was true or not. His usually loose and free hair was neat and adorned the customary top knot. The prince’s eyes illuminated with the golden fire that burned inside his body. Hatred and violence lived there Ozai knew because it burned in him. He knew that together they would rule this world as it was destined.
As Zuko came closer towards him, Ozai smiled at the expressionless face. He was hard to read now that the war hardened his heart. Ozai could not remember the sound of his son’s laughter or the look of his face when he smiled, only anger sculptured his face now. His son was perfect.
“The strength of my seed stands before me.” Ozai’s voice carried inside the hall. Those standing around kneeled as the Prince approached. Ozai opened his arms for his son.
A sneer crossed Azula’s face as they embraced each other. She made sure that no one else saw her reaction towards the display of love. Her father treated Zuko as if he were all that mattered to him. She showed him her loyalty many times but received nothing as her reward. Zuko received everything, including the woman to give her father his grandchildren.
This was not the truth. Her brother could not change so quickly back into the son their father desired. Zuko was stubborn and once his mind was set it did not change. Why was her father so quick to believe his loyalty? She would test his loyalty.
Zuko pulled away from the embrace to see the sneer on his sister’s face and he knew why it was there. She was jealous. He was the only thing the emperor showed any affection. His constant appearance beside his father caused his sister uneasiness. She felt threatened. He could see the cracks in her shield. She was like every other daughter he had met; all she wanted was the love of her father.
Ozai directed him to the table and the seat to the right of his. Azula walked towards the seat on Ozai’s left. It was the seat for the lesser. The others in the hall each took a seat and the meal began.
Silence filled the hall as the elite began to eat. Without Iroh and his senseless stories, there was nothing in this room of interest. Zuko was quite content to serve out this time in silence and plan his next move.
Ozai set down his cup and watched his son deep in thought. The prince needed something to ease his pain. Ozai sent him many women to end his frustration but Zuko refused them all welcoming his suffering for Mai. He knew his son loved her even when he knew she was a traitor. Ozai’s trust was waning for him until he asked for the water maiden. Zuko would take her and crush all hope the few resistors had to end the fire nation’s reign. It pleased him greatly and all his mistrust vanished. He was deaf to all but his son.
“The water maiden will arrive soon and you can deliver her fate to her. I am sure she will be more than grateful that you are her mate.” Those around the table chuckled.
“Your five years of abstinence will be over by this noonday.” One of the lords sitting at the table voiced and laughter swelled in the hall.
Bright orange fire swirled around their seats as Ozai slammed his fist down upon the table. All the joyous talk of sex ended as fast as it started.
“She is to be his wife; a princess of the fire nation. Soon she will be the mother of my grandchildren you will treat her with honor and respect. She was a powerful enemy and you will show her the deserved praise.” All heads bowed as the emperor looked around the table and then his gaze centered on Azula.
“I will treat her as a sister father.”
The fire in his eyes did not dissipate as she spoke her words. “The consequences of disobeying me will be dire daughter.”
The thought of bearing the scar of Ozai’s wrath as her brother did made her shiver with fear. She had no doubts that her father would not hesitate to enforce his power if he felt threatened or ignored.
“I am a loyal subject to you father and I always will be. I will never leave your side.” Her voice held conviction that all knew was true. Her need for his love drove her to obedience.
Ozai calmed the fire about the room and returned to his meal. “Time will tell daughter.”

She watched him meditating for a long while before walking into his personal sparing room. Few entered here without his permission. He never gave it to her but she knew he would not kill her.
“Father the water maiden has arrived.”
Ozai opened his eyes but remained seated. “Good, has Zuko been informed.”
Azula bowed her head. “Yes father he awaits you in the throne room.”
Ozai stood bare chest and wearing a smile. “I could not hope for a better mate for Zuko. She is beautiful and will give him the pleasure he deserves.”
Azula kept her head bowed. “She and Zuko once tried to destroy us father or have you forgotten.”
Smoke seeped from the emperor’s nose as the buried memory came to the surface. “I try to forget but I have you to remind me. I know that if I got rid of you these unpleasant thoughts would leave.”
Azula heartbeat accelerated. “I only care for your kingdom father and I desire to keep it safe.”
“Zuko keeps us safe daughter.” Ozai walked behind her towards the other room to freshen up.
Azula turned in the direction he walked as anger poured into her body. He dismissed her as if she was an afterthought and none of her victories mattered. She wanted to scream at him that her name was Azula. He never spoke it, not even in private. “I fight for our nation father as well as Zuko. He has betrayed us before along with Mai yet you continue to trust him. I only question his loyalty because it is the prudent thing to do.”
Smoke swirled from behind the painted screen where Ozai dressed. Her constant attacks against his son were weakening his decision of not to kill her. He promised Zuko he would not and it had always intrigued him why his son would request such a thing of him. Perhaps he wanted to do it himself. He knew of their volatile relationship. It was one he encouraged to make them strong against anything even their own blood. ”I know my Zuko and I know my daughter make no mistake about that. Your malice towards the prince is expected and I will tolerate it to a point; but harm one hair on his head and I will not be the loving father that I am.”

They had dressed her in dark purple and white fabric that flowed on the floor before her and behind her. She stood alone before the throne not wanting to see who waited to rape her. There was much commotion in the room as the desired people walked inside to gawk at their one time enemy. The presence before her came closer and the fear in her heart took over. She clutched the small blade that she hid underneath the layers of fabric. She held her head down and the long dark waves of her hair shielded her face from him and the rest of the lords in the room. She would not go quietly to Ozai’s bed.
“This is a great time for you, enemy. You live because of your beauty and strength. You live because of my desire to have those gifts… for my son.”
She broke out in a sweat as relief filled her body. Zuko had kept his promise to her. She relaxed her grip on the blade and it slid across her hand.
He wanted her to show even more anger that her once time friend was now her tormentor. Her relaxing shoulders told of her relief. He needed her to become violent or this plan would not work. She had to become uninteresting to his father and Azula. They would expect her anger not her relief of being his captive.
“She bleeds.” One of the lords yelled seeing the dark crimson colors marring the beautiful fabrics that lay on the floor.
His movements were like a smooth snake as his hand swam through the layers of fabric and gripped the wrist of her right hand holding the blade. Katara fought him for control of the blade as he pulled her hand out from beneath the dress. Her frustrated cries filled the room as he placed her arms behind her back. She struggled in his hold flicking her hair in his face trying to blind him. Zuko released both her wrists into one hand and grabbed a handful of her hair. With her head pulled back Zuko saw the pained expression on her face. Her eyes were dark with tears as his grip became painful on purpose.
Ozai walked towards the struggling woman wearing a smile. The unshed tears spoke volumes to the emperor. Ozai stared down at the droplets of blood that smeared under Zuko’s boot.
“You will not escape us that easily. The only blood that you will shed will be in Zuko’s bed. You will provide him with heirs so that my seed will rule this world forever. You will never leave here my daughter Katara.”
Azula decided to join her father and appeared on Zuko’s left side smiling at the defeated water maiden. Where was her talk of destroying them now? Katara was but a shell of herself and she would make sure to tell the water maiden of her friend Toph and Sokka’s fate.
Katara closed her eyes and the tears rolled down her cheeks. Zuko loosened his grip on her hair and arms slightly so the others would not notice. He wanted her to fight back. She had to denounce him with her voice that is what they expected.The beautiful blue eyes centered on Zuko as the tears continued to fall. “From one monster to another will not break me.”
Her voice quivered, as did her body as he pulled her roughly towards him. The blade fell to the floor as a smile slowly formed on the face of the prince.
“I will do more than break you my Katara; I will make you love me for it.” He crushed her lips with his sealing the agreement with a kiss.
Ozai smiled watching the woman fight his son for air. Their union would be deadly.
She almost lost her balance when Zuko ripped his mouth and body from her. She recovered her stance and glared at the man before her. She moved quickly and picked up the blade from the floor. Cries of surprise and warning filled the hall as the desperate water maiden attacked. A frustrated yell came from Katara as she moved to attack. Zuko easily avoided her first strike and placed her in the same hold as before with her arms behind her back.
Ozai chuckled as she continued to fight against his son. “You fight now but later you will plead for his mercy. I have no doubt about that. The guards will take you to the prince’s chamber so that you may dwell on these circumstances.”
A frown came across Zuko’s face when he saw Pi among the men to take Katara to his room. He was dangerous to her at this moment. Zuko looked at the captain approaching “Guard her she may still have a weapon I will check for that later.”
A frown crossed Pi’s face as the man bowed to the Prince. A chill ran up his back when his prince’s golden gaze met his. He could see the imminent harm that would come to him if he set foot in his chamber. Pi moved back from the men and tried to hide within the group of lords that filled the hall.
Zuko released Katara and two men began to bind her with some rope even as she fought them. It was the only way to get her into Zuko’s room without hurting her. Katara contorted her body while in their care and began screaming curses at them, as they lifted her from the floor and carried her from the room.
~~~~~~
Hours passed as she waited in the prince’s spacious chambers. Dragons and fire adorned the walls but she knew Zuko had nothing to do with its decoration. Ozai wanted to make sure his son knew where he belonged. She was under no Illusion as to why he would pick the room furthest from his family and closest to the sound of the ocean. It was for her. She could hear the sea but it did not beckon for her. She could feel nothing of her power from before. The pain in her heart was too great to overcome. However, there was one thing that made it easier for her to grieve.
The sound of a closing door made her raise her head to see Zuko walk around the corner and into his sleeping chamber. The top knot from earlier was gone and his hair hung past his shoulders. His golden eyes intently stared at her as she stared back at him.
She quickly walked towards him and placed her arms around his strong body. His arms without prompting surrounded her trembling form. He laid his head on top of hers and heard the soft cries she made, as the emotions poured from her in the form of tears.
He knew at that moment she was with him and that the fire nation was doomed.
